Wigner supersolid of excitons in electron-hole bilayers

Bilayer electron-hole systems, where carriers in one layer are electrons and carriers in the other are holes, have been actively investigated in recent years with the focus on Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons. This condensation is expected to occur when the layer separation d is much smaller than the interparticle distance r_sa_B within each layer. In this Brief Report, we argue for the existence of a state, Wigner supersolid, in which excitons are phase-coherent but form a Wigner crystal due to dipolar repulsion. We present the qualitative phase diagram of a bilayer system, and discuss properties and possible signatures of the Wigner supersolid phase.

Absence of Wigner Crystallization in Graphene

Graphene, a single sheet of graphite, has attracted tremendous attention due to recent experiments which demonstrate that carriers in it are described by massless fermions with linear dispersion. In this note, we consider the possibility of Wigner crystallization in graphene in the absence of external magnetic field. We show that the ratio of potential and kinetic energy is independent of the carrier density, the tuning parameter that usually drives Wigner crystallization and find out that for given material parameters (dielectric constant and Fermi velocity), Wigner crystallization is not possible. We comment on the how these results change in the presence of a strong external magnetic field.

Dynamical magneto-electric coupling in helical magnets

Collective mode dynamics of the helical magnets coupled to electric polarization via spin-orbit interaction is studied theoretically. The soft modes associated with the ferroelectricity are not the transverse optical phonons, as expected from the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation, but are the spin waves hybridized with the electric polarization. This leads to the Drude-like dielectric function $ε(ω)$ in the limit of zero magnetic anisotropy. There are two more low-lying modes; phason of the spiral and rotation of helical plane along the polarization axis. The roles of these soft modes in the neutron scattering and antiferromagnetic resonance are revealed, and a novel experiment to detect the dynamical magneto-electric coupling is proposed.

Effect of impurities on supersolid condensate: a Ginzburg-Landau approach

Basing our arguments on a wave function that contains both positional and superfluid order, we propose a Ginzburg-Landau functional for a supersolid with the two order parameters necessary to describe such a phase: density n_B(r) and supersolid order parameter ψ_V. We argue that adding lighter $^3$He atoms to a 4He supersolid produces attractive regions for vacancies, leading to patches of higher T_c. On the other hand, the supersolid stiffness decreases in this granular state with increased 3He disorder. Both effects are linear in 3He concentration.

Voltage dependence of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert damping of a spin in a current driven tunnel junction

We present a theory of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert damping $α$ for a localized spin ${\vec S}$ in the junction coupled to the conduction electrons in both leads under an applied volatege $V$. We find the voltage dependence of the damping term reflecting the energy dependence of the density of states. We find the effect is linear in the voltage and cotrolled by particle-hole asymmetry of the leads.

Theory of Knight Shift and Spin-Lattice Relaxation Rates of Pu-115

We calculated the Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rates of Pu-115 compounds assuming d-wave superconductivity in the presence of strong impurity scattering. We discuss the implications for recent measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation rate in the Pu-115 compound PuRhGa5 by Sakai and coworkers [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 74, 1710 (2005)] and present a prediction for the corresponding Knight shift. In addition, we noticed a significant round-off of the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 just above the superconducting transition temperature that is not observed in the sister compound PuCoGa5. It appears that in PuRhGa5 superconductivity is mediated by spin fluctuations, too. This provides additional support to the scenario of superconducting pairing mediated by spin fluctuations in the Pu-115 compounds similar to the Ce-115 compounds and the high-temperature copper-oxide superconductors.

Excitonic condensate and quasiparticle transport in electron-hole bilayer systems

Bilayer electron-hole systems undergo excitonic condensation when the distance d between the layers is smaller than the typical distance between particles within a layer. All excitons in this condensate have a fixed dipole moment which points perpendicular to the layers, and therefore this condensate of dipoles couples to external electromagnetic fields. We study the transport properties of this dipolar condensate system based on a phenomenological model which takes into account contributions from the condensate and quasiparticles. We discuss, in particular, the drag and counterflow transport, in-plane Josephson effect, and noise in the in-plane currents in the condensate state which provides a direct measure of the superfluid collective-mode velocity.

Spin and Spin-Wave Dynamics in Josephson Junctions

We extend the Keldysh formulation to quantum spin systems and derive exact equations of motion. This allows us to explore the dynamics of single spins and of ferromagnets when these are inserted between superconducting leads. Several new effects are reported. Chief amongst these are nutations of single S=1/2 spins in Josephson junctions. These nutations are triggered by the superconducting pairing correlations in the leads. Similarly, we find that on rather universal grounds, magnets display unconventional spin wave dynamics when placed in Josephson junctions. These lead to modifications in the tunneling current.

Density and spin response functions in ultracold fermionic atom gases

We propose a new method of detecting the onset of superfluidity in a two-component ultracold fermionic gas of atoms governed by an attractive short-range interaction. By studying the two-body correlation functions we find that a measurement of the momentum distribution of the density and spin response functions allows one to access separately the normal and anomalous densities. The change in sign at low momentum transfer of the density response function signals the transition between a BEC and a BCS regimes, characterized by small and large pairs, respectively. This change in sign of the density response function represents an unambiguous signature of the BEC to BCS crossover. Also, we predict spin rotational symmetry-breaking in this system.

Dipolar superfluidity in electron-hole bilayer systems

Bilayer electron-hole systems, where the electrons and holes are created via doping and confined to separate layers, undergo excitonic condensation when the distance between the layers is smaller than typical distance between particles within a layer. We argue that the excitonic condensate is a novel dipolar superfluid in which the phase of the condensate couples to the {\it gradient} of the vector potential. We predict the existence of dipolar supercurrent which can be tuned by an in-plane magnetic field and detected by independent contacts to the layers. Thus the dipolar superfluid offers an example of excitonic condensate in which the {\it composite} nature of its constituent excitons is manifest in the macroscopic superfluid state. We also discuss various properties of this superfluid including the role of vortices.

Spin current and magneto-electric effect in non-collinear magnets

A new microscopic mechanism of the magneto-electric (ME) effect based on the spin supercurrent is theoretically presented for non-collinear magnets. The close analogy between the superconductors (charge current) and magnets (spin current) is drawn to derive the distribution of the spin supercurrent and the resultant electric polarization. Application to the spiral spin structure is discussed.

Novel Spin Dynamics in a Josephson Junction

We address the dynamics of a single spin embedded in the tunneling barrier between two superconductors. As a consequence of pair correlations in the superconducting state, the spin displays a rich and unusual dynamics. To properly describe the time evolution of the spin we find the generalized Wess-Zumino-Witten-Novikov term in the effective action for the spin on the Keldysh contour. The superconducting correlations lead to an effective spin action which is non-local in time leading to unconventional precessions. Our predictions might be directly tested for macroscopic spin clusters.

Noise spectroscopy and interlayer phase-coherence in bilayer quantum Hall systems

Bilayer quantum Hall systems develop strong interlayer phase-coherence when the distance between layers is comparable to the typical distance between electrons within a layer. The phase-coherent state has until now been investigated primarily via transport measurements. We argue here that interlayer current and charge-imbalance noise studies in these systems will be able to address some of the key experimental questions. We show that the characteristic frequency of current-noise is that of the zero wavevector collective mode, which is sensitive to the degree of order in the system. Local electric potential noise measured in a plane above the bilayer system on the other hand is sensitive to finite-wavevector collective modes and hence to the soft-magnetoroton picture of the order-disorder phase transition.

Electronic Structure near Impurities in the Chains of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$

We study the electronic structure near impurities in the one-dimensional chains of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. Assuming chain superconductivity below $T_c$ due to a proximity coupling, we show that only a magnetic impurity induces resonance states in the local density of states. Its spatial structure reflects the particle-hole nature of chain superconductivity and thus distinguishes it from other broken symmetry phases. For a sufficiently large scattering strength, or due to interference effects arising from a second impurity, the chains undergo a quantum phase transition to a polarized state.

STM measurement of single spin relaxation time in superconductors

Localized spin states in conventional superconductors at low temperatures are expected to have long decoherence time due to the strong suppression of spin relaxation channels. We propose a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiment allowing the direct measurement of the decoherence time of a single spin in a conventional superconductor. The experimental setup can be readily applied to general-purpose spin-polarized STM and to local spin relaxation spectroscopy. A possible extension of the setup to a quantum information processing scheme is discussed.

Doping induced inhomogeneity in high-Tc superconductors

Doping and disorder are inseparable in the superconducting cuprates. Assuming the simplest possible disordered doping, we construct a semiphenomenological model and analyze its experimental consequences. Among the affected experimental quantities are the ARPES spectra and thermodynamic properties. From our model we make a prediction for the width of the local superconducting gap distribution with the only experimentally unknown parameter being the superconducting correlation length. Thus, our model provides a direct way of determining the superconducting correlation length from a known experimental gap distribution.

Josephson scanning tunneling microscopy

We propose a set of scanning tunneling microscopy experiments in which the surface of superconductor is scanned by a superconducting tip. Potential capabilities of such experimental setup are discussed. Most important anticipated results of such an experiment include the position-resolved measurement of the superconducting order parameter and the possibility to determine the nature of the secondary component of the order parameter at the surface. The theoretical description based on the tunneling Hamiltonian formalism is presented.
