Non-stationary heat conduction in one-dimensional chains with conserved momentum

The Letter addresses the relationship between hyperbolic equations of heat conduction and microscopic models of dielectrics. Effects of the non-stationary heat conduction are investigated in two one-dimensional models with conserved momentum: Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) chain and chain of rotators (CR). These models belong to different universality classes with respect to stationary heat conduction. Direct numeric simulations reveal in both models a crossover from oscillatory decay of short-wave perturbations of the temperature field to smooth diffusive decay of the long-wave perturbations. Such behavior is inconsistent with parabolic Fourier equation of the heat conduction. The crossover wavelength decreases with increase of average temperature in both models. For the FPU model the lowest order hyperbolic Cattaneo-Vernotte equation for the non-stationary heat conduction is not applicable, since no unique relaxation time can be determined.

Reduced Thermal Conductivity of Nanowires and Nanoribbons with Dynamically Rough Surfaces and the "Problem of One-Dimensional Heat Conductors"

We present analytical model and molecular dynamics simulations of phonon heat transport in nanowires and nanoribbons with anharmonic lattices and dynamically rough surfaces and edges. In agreement with recent experiments on heat transport in single-crystalline silicon nanowires with rough surfaces, our model and simulations predict finite and length-independent phonon thermal conductivity in such quasi-one-dimensional systems, in contrast to anomalous phonon thermal conductivity of corresponding momentum-conserving systems with atomically smooth surfaces, divergent with the system length. Within our model, the main cause of thermal conductivity reduction is momentum-nonconserving scattering of longitudinal acoustic phonons by anharmonic side phonon leads in quasi-one-dimensional phonon waveguide with dynamically rough surface or edge layers.

Computation of the temperature dependence of the heat capacity of complex molecular systems using random color noise

We propose a new method for computing the temperature dependence of the heat capacity in complex molecular systems. The proposed scheme is based on the use of the Langevin equation with low frequency color noise. We obtain the temperature dependence of the correlation time of random noises, which enables to model the partial thermalization of high-frequency vibrations, which is a pure quantum effect. By applying the method to carbon nanotubes, we show that the consideration of the color noise in the Langevin equation allows to reproduce the temperature evolution of the specific heat with good accuracy.

Wandering breathers and self-trapping in weakly coupled nonlinear chains: classical counterpart of macroscopic tunneling quantum dynamics

We present analytical and numerical studies of phase-coherent dynamics of intrinsically localized excitations (breathers) in a system of two weakly coupled nonlinear oscillator chains. We show that there are two qualitatively different dynamical regimes of the coupled breathers, either immovable or slowly-moving: the periodic transverse translation (wandering) of low-amplitude breather between the chains, and the one-chain-localization of high-amplitude breather. These two modes of coupled nonlinear excitations, which involve large number of anharmonic oscillators, can be mapped onto two solutions of a single pendulum equation, detached by a separatrix mode. We also study two-chain breathers, which can be considered as bound states of discrete breathers with different symmetry and center locations in the coupled chains, and bifurcation of the anti-phase two-chain breather into the one-chain one. Delocalizing transition of 1D breather in 2D system of a large number of parallel coupled nonlinear chains is described, in which the breather, initially excited in a given chain, abruptly spreads its vibration energy in the whole 2D system upon decreasing breather frequency or amplitude below the threshold one. The threshold breather frequency is above the cut off phonon frequency in 2D system, and the threshold breather amplitude scales as square root of the inter-chain coupling constant. Delocalizing transition of discrete vibrational breather in 2D and 3D systems of coupled nonlinear chains has an analogy with delocalizing transition for Bose-Einstein condensates in 2D and 3D optical lattices.

Discrete Nonlinear Breathing Modes in Carbon Nanotubes

We study large-amplitude oscillations of carbon nanotubes with chiralities $(m,0)$ and $(m,m)$ and predict the existence of localized nonlinear modes in the form of {\em discrete breathers}. In nanotubes with the index $(m,0)$ {\em three types} of localized modes can exist, namely longitudinal, radial, and twisting breathers; however only the twisting breathers, or {\em twistons}, are nonradiating nonlinear modes which exist in the frequency gaps of the linear spectrum. Geometry of carbon nanotubes with the index $(m,m)$ allows only the existence of broad radial breathers in a narrow spectral range.
