A unified approach to computation of integrable structures

We expose (without proofs) a unified computational approach to integrable structures (including recursion, Hamiltonian, and symplectic operators) based on geometrical theory of partial differential equations. We adopt a coordinate based approach and aim to provide a tutorial to the computations.

On integrable structures for a generalized Monge-Ampere equation

We consider a 3rd-order generalized Monge-Ampere equation u_yyy - u_xxy^2 + u_xxx u_xyy = 0 (which is closely related to the associativity equation in the 2-d topological field theory) and describe all integrable structures related to it (i.e., Hamiltonian, symplectic, and recursion operators). Infinite hierarchies of symmetries and conservation laws are constructed as well.

Hamiltonian operators and l*-coverings

An efficient method to construct Hamiltonian structures for nonlinear evolution equations is described. It is based on the notions of variational Schouten bracket and l*-covering. The latter serves the role of the cotangent bundle in the category of nonlinear evolution PDEs. We first consider two illustrative examples (the KdV equation and the Boussinesq system) and reconstruct for them the known Hamiltonian structures by our methods. For the coupled KdV-mKdV system, a new Hamiltonian structure is found and its uniqueness (in the class of polynomial (x,t)-independent structures) is proved. We also construct a nonlocal Hamiltonian structure for this system and prove its compatibility with the local one.

Geometry of jet spaces and integrable systems

An overview of some recent results on the geometry of partial differential equations in application to integrable systems is given. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism both in the free case (on the space of infinite jets) and with constraints (on a PDE) are discussed. Analogs of tangent and cotangent bundles to a differential equation are introduced and the variational Schouten bracket is defined. General theoretical constructions are illustrated by a series of examples.

Hamiltonian structures for general PDEs

We sketch out a new geometric framework to construct Hamiltonian operators for generic, non-evolutionary partial differential equations. Examples on how the formalism works are provided for the KdV equation, Camassa-Holm equation, and Kupershmidt's deformation of a bi-Hamiltonian system.

Integrability of Kupershmidt deformations

We prove that the Kupershmidt deformation of a bi-Hamiltonian system is itself bi-Hamiltonian. Moreover, Magri hierarchies of the initial system give rise to Magri hierarchies of Kupershmidt deformations as well. Since Kupershmidt deformations are not written in evolution form, we start with an outline a geometric framework to study Hamiltonian properties of general non-evolution differential equations, developed in [2] (see also arXiv:0812.4895).

Variational Poisson-Nijenhuis structures for partial differential equations

We explore variational Poisson-Nijenhuis structures on nonlinear PDEs and establish relations between Schouten and Nijenhuis brackets on the initial equation with the Lie bracket of symmetries on its natural extensions (coverings). This approach allows to construct a framework for the theory of nonlocal structures.

A geometric study of the dispersionless Boussinesq type equation

We discuss the dispersionless Boussinesq type equation, which is equivalent to the Benney-Lax equation, being a system of equations of hydrodynamical type. This equation was discussed in . The results include: a description of local and nonlocal Hamiltonian and symplectic structures, hierarchies of symmetries, hierarchies of conservation laws, recursion operators for symmetries and generating functions of conservation laws (cosymmetries). Highly interesting are the appearances of operators that send conservation laws and symmetries to each other but are neither Hamiltonian, nor symplectic. These operators give rise to a noncommutative infinite-dimensional algebra of recursion operators.

(Non)local Hamiltonian and symplectic structures, recursions, and hierarchies: a new approach and applications to the N=1 supersymmetric KdV equation

Using methods of math.DG/0304245 and [I.S.Krasil'shchik and P.H.M.Kersten, Symmetries and recursion operators for classical and supersymmetric differential equations, Kluwer, 2000], we accomplish an extensive study of the N=1 supersymmetric Korteweg-de Vries equation. The results include: a description of local and nonlocal Hamiltonian and symplectic structures, five hierarchies of symmetries, the corresponding hierarchies of conservation laws, recursion operators for symmetries and generating functions of conservation laws. We stress that the main point of the paper is not just the results on super-KdV equation itself, but merely exposition of the efficiency of the geometrical approach and of the computational algorithms based on it.

Homological Methods in Equations of Mathematical Physics

These lecture notes are a systematic and self-contained exposition of the cohomological theories naturally related to partial differential equations: the Vinogradov C-spectral sequence and the C-cohomology, including the formulation in terms of the horizontal (characteristic) cohomology. Applications to computing invariants of differential equations are discussed. The lectures contain necessary introductory material on the geometric theory of differential equations and homological algebra.

Notes on the horizontal cohomology

This paper is devoted to the horizontal (``characteristic'') cohomology of systems of differential equations. Recent results on computing the horizontal cohomology via the compatibility complex are generalized. New results on the Vinogradov C-spectral sequence and the Krasil'shchik C-cohomology are obtained. As an application of general theory, the examples of an evolution equation and a p-form gauge theory are explicitly worked out.

Lagrangian Formalism Over Graded Algebras

This paper provides a description of an algebraic setting for the Lagrangian formalism over graded algebras and is intended as the necessary first step towards the noncommutative C-spectral sequence (variational bicomplex). A noncommutative version of integration procedure, the notion of adjoint operator, Green's formula, the relation between integral and differential forms, conservation laws, Euler operator, Noether's theorem is considered.
