Jump to Conclusions: Short-Cutting Transformers With Linear Transformations

Transformer-based language models create hidden representations of their inputs at every layer, but only use final-layer representations for prediction. This obscures the internal decision-making process of the model and the utility of its intermediate representations. One way to elucidate this is to cast the hidden representations as final representations, bypassing the transformer computation in-between. In this work, we suggest a simple method for such casting, using linear transformations. This approximation far exceeds the prevailing practice of inspecting hidden representations from all layers, in the space of the final layer. Moreover, in the context of language modeling, our method produces more accurate predictions from hidden layers, across various model scales, architectures, and data distributions. This allows "peeking" into intermediate representations, showing that GPT-2 and BERT often predict the final output already in early layers. We then demonstrate the practicality of our method to recent early exit strategies, showing that when aiming, for example, at retention of 95% accuracy, our approach saves additional 7.9% layers for GPT-2 and 5.4% layers for BERT. Last, we extend our method to linearly approximate sub-modules, finding that attention is most tolerant to this change. Our code and learned mappings are publicly available at https://github.com/sashayd/mat.

On irreps of a Hecke algebra of a non-reductive group

We study irreducible representations of the Hecke algebra of the pair $({\rm PGL}_2 (F[ε] / (ε^2)) , {\rm PGL}_2 (\mathcal{O}[ε] / (ε^2)))$ where $F$ is a local non-Archimedean field of characteristic different than $2$ and $\mathcal{O} \subset F$ is its ring of integers. We expect to apply our analysis to the study of the spectrum of Hecke operators on the space of cuspidal functions on the space of principal ${\rm PGL}_2$-bundles on curves over rings $\mathbb{F}_q [ε] / (ε^2)$.

On tempered representations

Let $G$ be a unimodular locally compact group. We define a property of irreducible unitary $G$-representations $V$ which we call c-temperedness, and which for the trivial $V$ boils down to Følner's condition (equivalent to the trivial $V$ being tempered, i.e. to $G$ being amenable). The property of c-temperedness is a-priori stronger than the property of temperedness. We conjecture that for semisimple groups over local fields temperedness implies c-temperedness. We check the conjecture for a special class of tempered $V$'s, as well as for all tempered $V$'s in the cases of $G := SL_2 (\mathbb{R})$ and of $G = PGL_2 (Ω)$ for a non-Archimedean local field $Ω$ of characteristic $0$ and residual characteristic not $2$. We also establish a weaker form of the conjecture, involving only $K$-finite vectors. In the non-Archimedean case, we give a formula expressing the character of a tempered $V$ as an appropriately-weighted conjugation-average of a matrix coefficient of $V$, generalising a formula of Harish-Chandra from the case when $V$ is square-integrable.

On the Deligne-Lusztig involution for character sheaves

For a reductive group G, we study the Drinfeld-Gaitsgory functor of the category of conjugation-equivariant D-modules on G. We show that this functor is an equivalence of categories, and that it has a filtration with layers expressed via parabolic induction of parabolic restriction. We use this to provide a conceptual definition of the Deligne-Lusztig involution on the set of isomorphism classes of irreducible character D-modules, which was defined previously in [Lu1, section 15].

A Paley-Wiener theorem for spherical $p$-adic spaces and Bernstein morphisms

Let $G$ be (the rational points of) a connected reductive group over a local non-archimedean field $F$. In this article we formulate and prove a property of an $F$-spherical homogeneous $G$-space (which in addition satisfies the finite multiplicity property, which is expected to hold for all $F$-spherical homogeneous $G$-spaces) which we call the Paley-Wiener property. This is much more elementary, but also contains much less information, than the recent relevant work of Delorme, Harinck and Sakellaridis (however, it holds for a wider class of spaces). The property results from a parallel categorical property. We also discuss how to define Bernstein morphisms via this approach.

Second adjointness for tempered admissible representations of a real group

We study second adjointness in the context of tempered admissible representations of a real reductive group. Compared to a recent result of Crisp and Higson, this generalizes from $SL_2$ to a general group, but specializes to only considering admissible representations. We also discuss Casselman's canonical pairing in this context, and the relation to Bernstein morphisms. Additionally, we take the opportunity to discuss some relevant functors and some of their relations.

On the Casselman-Jacquet functor

We study the Casselman-Jacquet functor $J$, viewed as a functor from the (derived) category of $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-modules to the (derived) category of $(\mathfrak{g},N^-)$-modules, $N^-$ is the negative maximal unipotent. We give a functorial definition of $J$ as a certain right adjoint functor, and identify it as a composition of two averaging functors $\text{Av}^{N^-}_!\circ \text{Av}^N_*$. We show that it is also isomorphic to the composition $\text{Av}^{N^-}_*\circ \text{Av}^N_!$. Our key tool is the pseudo-identity functor that acts on the (derived) category of (twisted) $D$-modules on an algebraic stack.

On parabolic restriction of perverse sheaves

We prove exactness of parabolic restriction and induction functors for conjugation equivariant sheaves on a reductive group generalizing a well known result of Lusztig who established this property for character sheaves. We propose a conjectural (but known for character sheaves) t-exactness property of the Harish-Chandra transform and provide an evidence for that conjecture. We also present two applications generalizing some results of Gabber and Loeser on perverse sheaves on an algebraic torus to an arbitrary reductive group.

An analog of the Deligne-Lusztig duality for $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-modules

Drinfeld suggested the definition of a certain endo-functor, called the pseudo-identity functor, on the category of D-modules on an algebraic stack. We extend this definition to an arbitrary DG category, and show that if certain finiteness conditions are satisfied, this functor is the inverse of the Serre functor. We apply this to the category of (g,K)-modules, and we stipulate that the pseudo-identity functor is the analog of the Deligne-Lusztig functor. In order to support this, we show that the pseudo-identity functor for (g,K)-modules is isomorphic to the composition of cohomological and contragredient dualities, which is parallel to the corresponding assertion for p-adic groups in [BBK].

A Formula for the Geometric Jacquet Functor and its Character Sheaf Analogue

Let (G,K) be a symmetric pair over the complex numbers, and let X=K\G be the corresponding symmetric space. In this paper we study a nearby cycles functor associated to a degeneration of X to MN\G, which we call the "wonderful degeneration". We show that on the category of character sheaves on X, this functor is isomorphic to a composition of two averaging functors (a parallel result, on the level of functions in the p-adic setting, was obtained in [BK, SV]). As an application, we obtain a formula for the geometric Jacquet functor of [ENV] and use this formula to give a geometric proof of the celebrated Casselman's submodule theorem and establish a second adjointness theorem for Harish-Chandra modules.

On properties of the Casselman-Jacquet functor

In this thesis, we study the Casselman-Jacquet functor. We discuss a new technical approach which makes the Casselman-Jacquet functor right adjoint to the Bernstein functor. We give an explanation, using D-modules, of the Bruhat filtration appearing on the module obtained by applying the Casselman-Jacquet functor to a principal series representation. We record some conjectures.

Reciprocity laws and $K$-theory

We associate to a full flag $\mathcal{F}$ in an $n$-dimensional variety $X$ over a field $k$, a "symbol map" $μ_{\mathcal{F}}:K(F_X) \to Σ^n K(k)$. Here, $F_X$ is the field of rational functions on $X$, and $K(\cdot)$ is the $K$-theory spectrum. We prove a "reciprocity law" for these symbols: Given a partial flag, the sum of all symbols of full flags refining it is $0$. Examining this result on the level of $K$-groups, we re-obtain various "reciprocity laws". Namely, when $X$ is a smooth complete curve, we obtain degree of a principal divisor is zero, Weil reciprocity, Residue theorem, Contou-Carrère reciprocity. When $X$ is higher-dimensional, we obtain Parshin reciprocity.
