Betti numbers for connected sums of graded Gorenstein artinian algebras

The connected sum construction, which takes as input Gorenstein rings and produces new Gorenstein rings, can be considered as an algebraic analogue for the topological construction having the same name. We determine the graded Betti numbers for connected sums of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras. Along the way, we find the graded Betti numbers for fiber products of graded rings; an analogous result was obtained in the local case by Geller. We relate the connected sum construction to the doubling construction, which also produces Gorenstein rings. Specifically, we show that a connected sum of doublings is the doubling of a fiber product ring.

Higher Lorentzian Polynomials, Higher Hessians, and the Hodge-Riemann Property for Graded Oriented Artinian Gorenstein Algebras in Codimension Two

A (standard graded) oriented Artinian Gorenstein algebra over the real numbers is uniquely determined by a real homogeneous polynomial called its Macaulay dual generator. We study the mixed Hodge-Riemann relations on oriented Artinian Gorenstein algebras for which we give a signature criterion on the higher mixed Hessian matrices of its Macaulay dual generator. Inspired by recent work of Brändén and Huh, we introduce a class of homogeneous polynomials in two variables called $i$-Lorentzian polynomials, and show that these are exactly the Macaulay dual generators of oriented Artinian Gorenstein algebras in codimension two satisfying mixed Hodge-Riemann relations up to degree $i$ on the positive orthant of linear forms. We further show that the set of $i$-Lorentzian polynomials of degree $d$ are in one-to-one correspondence with the set of totally nonnegative Toeplitz matrices of size depending on $i$ and $d$. A corollary is that all normally stable polynomials, i.e. polynomials whose normalized coefficients form a PF sequence, are $i$-Lorentzian. Another corollary is an analogue of Whitney's theorem for Toeplitz matrices, which appears to be new: the closure of the set of totally positive Toeplitz matrices, in the Euclidean space of all real matrices of a given size, is equal to the set of totally nonnegative Toeplitz matrices.

Computing real powers of monomial ideals

This paper concerns the exponentiation of monomial ideals. While it is customary for the exponentiation operation on ideals to consider natural powers, we extend this notion to powers where the exponent is a positive real number. Real powers of a monomial ideal generalize the integral closure operation and highlight many interesting connections to the theory of convex polytopes. We provide multiple algorithms for computing the real powers of a monomial ideal. An important result is that given any monomial ideal $I$, the function taking real numbers to the corresponding real power of $I$ is a step function whose jumping points are rational. This reduces the problem of determining real powers to rational exponents.

Duality for asymptotic invariants of graded families

The starting point of this paper is a duality for sequences of natural numbers which, under mild hypotheses, interchanges subadditive and superadditive sequences and inverts their asymptotic growth constants. We are motivated to explore this sequence duality since it arises naturally in at least two important algebraic-geometric contexts. The first context is Macaulay-Matlis duality, where the sequence of initial degrees of the family of symbolic powers of a radical ideal is dual to the sequence of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity values of a quotient by ideals generated by powers of linear forms. This philosophy is drawn from an influential paper of Emsalem and Iarrobino. We generalize this duality to differentially closed graded filtrations of ideals. In a different direction, we establish a duality between the sequence of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity values of the symbolic powers of certain ideals and a geometrically inspired sequence we term the jet separation sequence. We show that this duality underpins the reciprocity between two important geometric invariants: the multipoint Seshadri constant and the asymptotic regularity of a set of points in projective space.

The combinatorial structure of symmetric strongly shifted ideals

Symmetric strongly shifted ideals are a class of monomial ideals which come equipped with an action of the symmetric group and are analogous to the well-studied class of strongly stable monomial ideals. In this paper we focus on algebraic and combinatorial properties of symmetric strongly shifted ideals. On the algebraic side, we elucidate properties that pertain to behavior under ideal operations, primary decomposition, and the structure of their Rees algebra. On the combinatorial side, we develop a notion of partition Borel generators which leads to connections to discrete polymatroids, convex polytopes, and permutohedral toric varieties.

Axial constants and sectional regularity of homogeneous ideals

A notion of sectional regularity for a homogeneous ideal $I$, which measures the regularity of its generic sections with respect to linear spaces of various dimensions, is introduced. It is related to axial constants defined as the intercepts on the coordinate axes of the set of exponents of monomials in the reverse lexicographic generic initial ideal of $I$. The equivalence of these notions and several other homological and ideal-theoretic invariants is shown. It is also established that these equivalent invariants grow linearly for the family of powers of a given ideal.

Computations in intersection rings of flag bundles

Intersection rings of flag varieties and of isotropic flag varieties are generated by Chern classes of the tautological bundles modulo the relations coming from multiplicativity of total Chern classes. In this paper we describe the Groebner bases of the ideals of relations and give applications to computation of intersections, as implemented in Macaulay2.

Lefschetz properties of some codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebras

Codimension two Artinian algebras $A$ have the strong and weak Lefschetz properties provided the characteristic is zero or greater than the socle degree. It is open to what extent such results might extend to codimension three AG algebras - the most promising results so far have concerned the weak Lefschetz property for such algebras. We here show that every standard-graded codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ having low maximum value of the Hilbert function - at most six - has the strong Lefschetz property, provided that the characteristic is zero. When the characteristic is greater than the socle degree of $A$, we show that $A$ is almost strong Lefschetz. This quite modest result is nevertheless arguably the most encompassing so far concerning the strong Lefschetz property for graded codimension three AG algebras.

Convex bodies and asymptotic invariants for powers of monomial ideals

Continuing a well established tradition of associating convex bodies to monomial ideals, we initiate a program to construct asymptotic Newton polyhedra from decompositions of monomial ideals. This is achieved by forming a graded family of ideals based on a given decomposition. We term these graded families powers since they generalize the notions of ordinary and symbolic powers. Asymptotic invariants for these graded families are expressed as solutions to linear optimization problems on the respective convex bodies. This allows to establish a lower bound on the Waldschmidt constant of a monomial ideal by means of a more easily computable invariant, which we introduce under the name of naive Waldschmidt constant.

Cohomological Blow Ups of Graded Artinian Gorenstein Algebras Along Surjective Maps

We introduce the cohomological blow up of a graded Artinian Gorenstein (AG) algebra along a surjective map, which we term BUG (Blow Up Gorenstein) for short. This is intended to translate to an algebraic context the cohomology ring of a blow up of a projective manifold along a projective submanifold. We show, among other things, that a BUG is a connected sum, that it is the general fiber in a flat family of algebras, and that it preserves the strong Lefschetz property. We also show that standard graded compressed algebras are rarely BUGs, and we classify those BUGs that are complete intersections. We have included many examples throughout this manuscript.

Rees algebras of filtrations of covering polyhedra and integral closure of powers of monomial ideals

The aims of this work are to study Rees algebras of filtrations of monomial ideals associated to covering polyhedra of rational matrices with non-negative entries and non-zero columns using combinatorial optimization and integer programming, and to study powers of monomial ideals and their integral closures using irreducible decompositions and polyhedral geometry. We study the Waldschmidt constant and the ic-resurgence of the filtration associated to a covering polyhedron and show how to compute these constants using linear programming. Then we show a lower bound for the ic-resurgence of the ideal of covers of a graph and prove that the lower bound is attained when the graph is perfect. We also show lower bounds for the ic-resurgence of the edge ideal of a graph and give an algorithm to compute the asymptotic resurgence of squarefree monomial ideals. A classification of when Newton's polyhedron is the irreducible polyhedron is presented using integral closure.

Canonical Resolutions over Koszul Algebras

We generalize Buchsbaum and Eisenbud's resolutions for the powers of the maximal ideal of a polynomial ring to resolve powers of the homogeneous maximal ideal over graded Koszul algebras. Our approach has the advantage of producing resolutions that are both more explicit and minimal compared to those previously discovered by Green and Mart\'ınez-Villa \cite{GreenMartinezVilla} or Mart\'ınez-Villa and Zacharia \cite{MartinezVillaZacharia}.

Consequences of the packing problem

We study several consequences of the packing problem, a conjecture from combinatorial optimization, using algebraic invariants of square-free monomial ideals. While the packing problem is currently unresolved, we successfully settle the validity of its consequences. Our work prompts additional questions and conjectures, which are presented together with their motivation.

Connected Sums of Graded Artinian Gorenstein Algebras and Lefschetz Properties

A connected sum construction for local rings was introduced in a paper by H. Ananthnarayan, L. Avramov, and W.F. Moore. In the graded Artinian Gorenstein case, this can be viewed as an algebraic analogue of the topological construction of the same name. We give two alternative description of this algebraic connected sum: the first uses algebraic analogues of Thom classes of vector bundles and Gysin homomorphisms, the second is in terms of Macaulay dual generators. We also investigate the extent to which the connected sum construction preserves the weak or strong Lefschetz property, thus providing new classes of rings which satisfy these properties.

Singular loci of reflection arrangements and the containment problem

This paper provides insights into the role of symmetry in studying polynomial functions vanishing to high order on an algebraic variety. The varieties we study are singular loci of hyperplane arrangements in projective space, with emphasis on arrangements arising from complex reflection groups. We provide minimal sets of equations for the radical ideals defining these singular loci and study containments between the ordinary and symbolic powers of these ideals.

Symbolic Rees algebras

We survey old and new approaches to the study of symbolic powers of ideals. Our focus is on the symbolic Rees algebra of an ideal, viewed both as a tool to investigate its symbolic powers and as a source of challenging problems in its own right. We provide an invitation to this area of investigation by stating several open questions.

Betti numbers of symmetric shifted ideals

We introduce a new class of monomial ideals which we call symmetric shifted ideals. Symmetric shifted ideals are fixed by the natural action of the symmetric group and, within the class of monomial ideals fixed by this action, they can be considered as an analogue of stable monomial ideals within the class of monomial ideals. We show that a symmetric shifted ideal has linear quotients and compute its (equivariant) graded Betti numbers. As an application of this result, we obtain several consequences for graded Betti numbers of symbolic powers of defining ideals of star configurations.

Quadratic Gorenstein algebras with many surprising properties

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $0$. Using the method of idealization, we show that there is a non-Koszul, quadratic, Artinian, Gorenstein, standard graded $k$-algebra of regularity $3$ and codimension $8$, answering a question of Mastroeni, Schenck, and Stillman. We also show that this example is minimal in the sense that no other idealization that is non-Koszul, quadratic, Artinian, Gorenstein algebra, with regularity $3$ has smaller codimension. We also construct an infinite family of graded, quadratic, Artinian, Gorenstein algebras $A_m$, indexed by an integer $m \ge 2$, with the following properties: (1) there are minimal first syzygies of the defining ideal in degree $m+2$, (2) for $m \ge 3$, $A_m$ is not Koszul, (3) for $m \ge 7$, the Hilbert function of $A_m$ is not unimodal, and thus (4) for $m \ge 7$, $A_m$ does not satisfy the weak or strong Lefschetz properties. In particular, the subadditivity property fails for quadratic Gorenstein ideals. Finally, we show that the idealization of a construction of Roos yields non-Koszul quadratic Gorenstein algebras such that the residue field $k$ has a linear resolution for precisely $α$ steps for any integer $α\ge 2$. Thus there is no finite test for the Koszul property even for quadratic Gorenstein algebras.
