Safety-Critical Control for Quadrotor UAVs via Decentralized Navigation Functions

We study safety-critical control for teams of quadrotor UAVs driven by decentralized navigation functions under learned model uncertainty. These functions generate fully actuated translational reference forces, while quadrotors can only produce thrust along their body-fixed vertical axes. We construct a thrust-attitude implementation of the induced navigation forces and quantify its error with respect to the fully actuated reference dynamics. An aggregated robust HOCBF-QP safety filter minimally modifies the nominal thrusts while guaranteeing pairwise collision avoidance with high probability.

Robust Geometric Control of Catenary Robots under Unstructured Force Uncertainties

This paper considers the robust control of a catenary robot composed of two quadrotors connected by an inextensible cable. The system is modeled on \(SE(3)\), with the cable treated as a geometric subsystem induced by the UAV configuration rather than as an independent dynamical element. The catenary shape determines configuration-dependent forces that couple the translational dynamics of the vehicles. We propose a geometric tracking controller for the relative configuration of the agents and analyze its robustness with respect to unstructured uncertainties in the catenary-induced forces. The main theoretical result establishes local input-to-state stability of the closed-loop tracking errors. In particular, we obtain asymptotic convergence in the nominal case and an explicit ultimate bound for the tracking errors under bounded catenary-force perturbations.

Stable Walking for Bipedal Locomotion under Foot-Slip via Virtual Nonholonomic Constraints

Foot slip is a major source of instability in bipedal locomotion on low-friction or uncertain terrain. Standard control approaches typically assume no-slip contact and therefore degrade when slip occurs. We propose a control framework that explicitly incorporates slip into the locomotion model through virtual nonholonomic constraints, which regulate the tangential stance-foot velocity while remaining compatible with the virtual holonomic constraints used to generate the walking gait. The resulting closed-loop system is formulated as a hybrid dynamical system with continuous swing dynamics and discrete impact events. A nonlinear feedback law enforces both classes of constraints and yields a slip-compatible hybrid zero dynamics manifold for the reduced-order locomotion dynamics. Stability of periodic walking gaits is characterized through the associated Poincar\'e map, and numerical results illustrate stabilization under slip conditions.

Virtual Constraint for a Quadrotor UAV Enforcing a Body-Axis Pointing Direction

We propose a geometric control framework on $SE(3)$ for quadrotors that enforces pointing-driven missions without completing a full attitude reference. The mission is encoded through virtual constraints defining a task manifold and an associated set of admissible velocities, and invariance is achieved by a feedback law obtained from a linear system in selected inputs. Under a transversality condition with the effective actuation distribution, the invariance-enforcing input is uniquely defined, yielding a constructive control law and, for relevant tasks, closed-form expressions. We further derive a local off-manifold stabilization extension. As a case study, we lock a body axis to a prescribed line-of-sight direction while maintaining fixed altitude.

Dual-quaternion learning control for autonomous vehicle trajectory tracking with safety guarantees

We propose a learning-based trajectory tracking controller for autonomous robotic platforms whose motion can be described kinematically on $\mathrm{SE}(3)$. The controller is formulated in the dual quaternion framework and operates at the velocity level, assuming direct command of angular and linear velocities, as is standard in many aerial vehicles and omnidirectional mobile robots. Gaussian Process (GP) regression is integrated into a geometric feedback law to learn and compensate online for unknown, state-dependent disturbances and modeling imperfections affecting both attitude and position, while preserving the algebraic structure and coupling properties inherent to rigid-body motion. The proposed approach does not rely on explicit parametric models of the unknown effects, making it well-suited for robotic systems subject to sensor-induced disturbances, unmodeled actuation couplings, and environmental uncertainties. A Lyapunov-based analysis establishes probabilistic ultimate boundedness of the pose tracking error under bounded GP uncertainty, providing formal stability guarantees for the learning-based controller. Simulation results demonstrate accurate and smooth trajectory tracking in the presence of realistic, localized disturbances, including correlated rotational and translational effects arising from magnetometer perturbations. These results illustrate the potential of combining geometric modeling and probabilistic learning to achieve robust, data-efficient pose control for autonomous robotic systems.

Variational Dissipative Mechanics on Lie Algebroids

We formulate a Herglotz-type variational principle on a Lie algebroid and derive the corresponding Euler--Lagrange--Herglotz equations for a Lagrangian depending on an additional scalar variable $z$. This provides a geometric framework for dissipative systems on Lie algebroids and recovers, as special cases, the classical Euler--Lagrange--Herglotz equations on tangent bundles, the Euler--Poincar\'e--Herglotz equations on a Lie algebra, and the Lagrange--Poincar\'e--Herglotz equations on Atiyah algebroids of principal bundles. Starting from the local formulation, we then use Lie algebroid connections to obtain a coordinate-free Euler--Lagrange--Poincar\'e--Herglotz and Hamilton--Pontryagin--Herglotz theory. Finally, we establish energy balance laws and Noether--Herglotz-type results, in which classical conserved quantities are replaced by dissipated invariants.

Learning-based decentralized control with collision avoidance for multi-agent systems

In this paper, we present a learning-based tracking controller based on Gaussian processes (GP) for collision avoidance of multi-agent systems where the agents evolve in the special Euclidean group in the space SE(3). In particular, we use GPs to estimate certain uncertainties that appear in the dynamics of the agents. The control algorithm is designed to learn and mitigate these uncertainties by using GPs as a learning-based model for the predictions. In particular, the presented approach guarantees that the tracking error remains bounded with high probability. We present some simulation results to show how the control algorithm is implemented.

Retraction maps in optimal control of nonholonomic systems

In this paper, we compare the performance of different numerical schemes in approximating Pontryagin's Maximum Principle's necessary conditions for the optimal control of nonholonomic systems. Retraction maps are used as a seed to construct geometric integrators for the corresponding Hamilton equations. First, we obtain an intrinsic formulation of a discretization map on a distribution $\mathcal{D}$. Then, we illustrate this construction on a particular example for which the performance of different symplectic integrators is examined and compared with that of non-symplectic integrators.

Virtual nonlinear nonholonomic constraints from a symplectic point of view

In this paper, we provide a geometric characterization of virtual nonlinear nonholonomic constraints from a symplectic perspective. Under a transversality assumption, there is a unique control law making the trajectories of the associated closed-loop system satisfy the virtual nonlinear nonholonomic constraints. We characterize them in terms of the symplectic structure on $TQ$ induced by a Lagrangian function and the almost-tangent structure. In particular, we show that the closed-loop vector field satisfies a geometric equation of Chetaev type. Moreover, the closed-loop dynamics is obtained as the projection of the uncontrolled dynamics to the tangent bundle of the constraint submanifold defined by the virtual constraints.

Geometric Stabilization of Virtual Nonlinear Nonholonomic Constraints

In this paper, we address the problem of stabilizing a system around a desired manifold determined by virtual nonlinear nonholonomic constraints. Virtual constraints are relationships imposed on a control system that are rendered invariant through feedback control. Virtual nonholonomic constraints represent a specific class of virtual constraints that depend on the system's velocities in addition to its configurations. We derive a control law under which a mechanical control system achieves exponential convergence to the virtual constraint submanifold, and rendering it control-invariant. The proposed controller's performance is validated through simulation results in two distinct applications: flocking motion in multi-agent systems and the control of an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) navigating a stream.

Nonholonomic mechanics and virtual constraints on Riemannian homogeneous spaces

Nonholonomic systems are, so to speak, mechanical systems with a prescribed restriction on the velocities. A virtual nonholonomic constraint is a controlled invariant distribution associated with an affine connection mechanical control system. A Riemannian homogeneous space is, a Riemannian manifold that looks the same everywhere, as you move through it by the action of a Lie group. These Riemannian manifolds are not necessarily Lie groups themselves, but nonetheless possess certain symmetries and invariances that allow for similar results to be obtained. In this work, we introduce the notion of virtual constraint on Riemannian homogeneous spaces in a geometric framework which is a generalization of the classical controlled invariant distribution setting and we show the existence and uniqueness of a control law preserving the invariant distribution. Moreover we characterize the closed-loop dynamics obtained using the unique control law in terms of an affine connection. We illustrate the theory with new examples of nonholonomic control systems inspired by robotics applications.

Geometric stabilization of virtual linear nonholonomic constraints

In this paper, we give sufficient conditions for and deduce a control law under which a mechanical control system converges exponentially fast to a virtual linear nonholonomic constraint that is control invariant via the same feedback control. Virtual constraints are relations imposed on a control system that become invariant via feedback control, as opposed to physical constraints acting on the system. Virtual nonholonomic constraints, similarly to mechanical nonholonomic constraints, are a class of virtual constraints that depend on velocities rather than only on the configurations of the system.

Mechanical Hamiltonization of unreduced $\phi$-simple Chaplygin systems

In this paper, we prove that the trajectories of unreduced $\phi$-simple Chaplygin kinetic systems are reparametrizations of horizontal geodesics with respect to a modified Riemannian metric. Furthermore, our proof is constructive and these Riemannian metrics, which are not unique, are obtained explicitly in interesting examples. We also extend these results to $\phi$-simple Chaplygin mechanical systems (not necessarily kinetic).

Symmetry reduction and reconstruction in contact geometry and Lagrange-Poincar\'e-Herglotz equations

In this paper, we investigate the reduction process of a contact Lagrangian system whose Lagrangian is invariant under a group of symmetries. We give explicit coordinate expressions of the resulting reduced differential equations, the so-called Lagrange-Poincare-Herglotz equations. Our framework relied on the associated Herglotz vector field and its projected vector field, and the use of well-chosen quasi-velocities. Some examples are also discussed.

Comparison of two numerical methods for Riemannian cubic polynomials on Stiefel manifolds

In this paper we compare two numerical methods to integrate Riemannian cubic polynomials on the Stiefel manifold $\textbf{St}_{n,k}$. The first one is the adjusted de Casteljau algorithm, and the second one is a symplectic integrator constructed through discretization maps. In particular, we choose the cases of $n=3$ together with $k=1$ and $k=2$. The first case is diffeomorphic to the sphere and the quasi-geodesics appearing in the adjusted de Casteljau algorithm are actually geodesics. The second case is an example where we have a pure quasi-geodesic different from a geodesic. We provide a numerical comparison of both methods and discuss the obtained results to highlight the benefits of each method.

Optimal Control of Incompressible Ideal Flows with Obstacle Avoidance

It was shown in \cite{bloch2000optimal} that an optimal control formulation for incompressible ideal fluid flow yields Euler's equations. In this paper, we consider a variational obstacle-avoidance formulation for incompressible ideal flows by introducing a barrier-type potential in the associated optimal control functional. This leads to \textit{modified Euler equations for an inviscid fluid}, in which the barrier term acts on the Lagrangian configuration and appears in the Eulerian description as a shift in the effective pressure. We also present a numerical illustration of the reduced Eulerian dynamics, showing that the barrier term induces a localized deformation of the flow near the obstacle region, consistent with its role as an obstacle-avoidance penalization.

On the Geometry of Virtual Nonlinear Nonholonomic Constraints

Virtual constraints are relations imposed on a control system that become invariant via feedback control, as opposed to physical constraints acting on the system. Nonholonomic systems are mechanical systems with non-integrable constraints on the velocities. In this work, we introduce the notion of virtual nonlinear nonholonomic constraints in a geometric framework which is a controlled invariant submanifold and we show the existence and uniqueness of a control law preserving this submanifold. We illustrate the theory with various examples and present simulation results for an application.

Contact formalism for dissipative mechanical systems on Lie algebroids

In this paper, we introduce a geometric description of contact Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems on Lie algebroids in the framework of contact geometry, using the theory of prolongations. We discuss the relation between Lagrangian and Hamiltonian settings through a convenient notion of Legendre transformation. We also discuss the Hamilton-Jacobi problem in this framework and introduce the notion of a Legendrian Lie subalgebroid of a contact Lie algebroid.
