Magnetically-controlled Vortex Dynamics in a Ferromagnetic Superconductor

Ferromagnetic superconductors are exceptionally rare because the strong ferromagnetic exchange field usually destroys singlet superconductivity. EuFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$, an iron-based superconductor with a maximum critical temperature of 25 K, uniquely exhibits full coexistence with ferromagnetic order below $T_\mathrm{FM}$ $\simeq$ $19$ K. The interplay leads to narrowing of ferromagnetic domains at higher temperatures and spontaneous nucleation of vortices/antivortices at lower temperatures. Here we demonstrate how the underlying magnetic structure controls the superconducting vortex dynamics in applied magnetic fields. Just below $T_\mathrm{FM}$ we observe a pronounced peak in the creep activation energy, and magnetic force microscopy measurements reveal the presence of very closely-spaced ($w\ll λ$) vortex clusters. We attribute these observations to the formation of vortex polarons for which we present a theoretical description. In contrast, we link strong magnetic irreversibility at low temperatures to a critical current governed by giant flux creep over an activation barrier for vortex-antivortex annihilation near domain walls. Our work suggests new routes for the magnetic enhancement of vortex pinning with important applications in high-current conductors.

Signatures of odd-frequency correlations in the Josephson current of superconductor/ferromagnet hybrid junctions

Contacting a bilayer ferromagnet with a singlet even-frequency superconductor allows for the realization of an effective triplet odd-frequency superconductor. In this work, we investigate the Josephson effect between superconductors with different symmetries (e.g. odd- versus even-frequency). In particular, we study the supercurrent flowing between two triplet odd-frequency superconducting leads through a weak singlet even-frequency superconductor. We show that the peculiar temperature dependence of the critical current below the superconducting transition of the weak superconductor is a signature of the competition between odd/odd-frequency and odd/even-frequency Josephson couplings.

Size of stripe domains in a superconducting ferromagnet

In a superconducting ferromagnet, the superconducting state appears in the ferromagnetic phase where usually a domain structure has already developed. We study the influence of the superconducting screening currents on a stripe structure with out-of-plane magnetization, in a film of arbitrary thickness. We find that superconductivity always induces a shrinkage of the domains, and there is a critical value of penetration depth below which a mono-domain structure is more stable than the periodic one. Furthermore we investigate the possible different effects of singlet and triplet superconductivity on the domain width, as well as the conditions for the existence of vortices in the domains. The obtained results are then discussed in light of the experimental data of superconducting ferromagnets URhGe, UGe2, and UCoGe.

Magnetic moment manipulation by a Josephson current

We consider a Josephson junction where the weak-link is formed by a non-centrosymmetric ferromagnet. In such a junction, the superconducting current acts as a direct driving force on the magnetic moment. We show that the a.c. Josephson effect generates a magnetic precession providing then a feedback to the current. Magnetic dynamics result in several anomalies of current-phase relations (second harmonic, dissipative current) which are strongly enhanced near the ferromagnetic resonance frequency.

Decoupling of superconducting layers in magnetic superconductor RuSr_{2}GdCu_{2}O_{8}

We propose the model for magnetic properties of the magnetic superconductor RuSr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$, which incorporates the theory of the superconducting/ferromagnetic multilayers. The transition line $T_{d}(h)$, on which the Josephson coupled superconducting planes are decoupled, i.e. $% j_{c}(T_{d})=0$, is calculated as a function of the exchange energy $h$. As the result of this decoupling a nonmonotonic behavior of magnetic properties, like the lower critical field $H_{c1}$, Josephson plasma frequency, etc. is realized near (or by crossing) the $T_{d}(h)$ line. The obtained results are used in analyzing the newly discovered antiferromagnetic ruthenocuprate RuSr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ with possible weak ferromagnetic order in the RuO planes.
