Circular pentagons and real solutions of Painleve VI equations

We study real solutions of a class of Painleve VI equations. To each such solution we associate a geometric object, a one-parametric family of circular pentagons. We describe an algorithm which permits to compute the numbers of zeros, poles, 1-points and fixed points of the solution on the interval x>1 and their mutual position. The monodromy of the associated linear equation and parameters of the Painleve VI equation are easily recovered from the family of pentagons.

Quasiconformal surgery and linear differential equations

We describe a new method of constructing transcendental entire functions $A$ such that the differential equation $w"+Aw=0$ has two linearly independent solutions with relatively few zeros. In particular, we solve a problem of Bank and Laine by showing that there exist entire functions $A$ of any prescribed order greater than $1/2$ such that the differential equation has two linearly independent solutions whose zeros have finite exponent of convergence. We show that partial results by Bank, Laine, Langley, Rossi and Shen related to this problem are in fact best possible. We also improve a result of Toda and show that the resulting estimate is best possible. Our method is based on gluing solutions of the Schwarzian differential equation $S(F)=2A$ for infinitely many coefficients $A$.

Spherical rectangles

We study spherical quadrilaterals whose angles are odd multiples of pi/2, and the equivalent accessory parameter problem for the Heun equation. We obtain a classification of these quadrilaterals up to isometry. For given angles, there are finitely many one-dimensional continuous families which we enumerate. In each family the conformal modulus is either bounded from above or bounded from below, but not both, and the numbers of families of these two types are equal. The results can be translated to classification of Heun's equations with real parameters, whose exponent differences are odd multiples of 1/2, with unitary monodromy.

Green's function and anti-holomorphic dynamics on a torus

We give a new, simple proof of the fact recently discovered by C.-S. Lin and C.-L. Wang that the Green function of a torus has either three or five critical points, depending on the modulus of the torus. The proof uses anti-holomorphic dynamics. As a byproduct we find a one-parametric family of anti-holomorphic dynamical systems for which the parameter space consists only of hyperbolic components and analytic curves separating them.

Spherical quadrilaterals with three non-integer angles

We classify spherical quadrilaterals up to isometry in the case when one inner angle is a multiple of pi while the other three are not. This is equivalent to classification of Heun's equations with real parameters and one apparent singularity such that the monodromy consists of unitary transformations.

On the second main theorem of Cartan

The possibility of reversion of the inequality in the Second Main Theorem of Cartan in the theory of holomorphic curves in projective space is discussed. A new version of this theorem is proved that becomes an asymptotic equality for a class of holomorphic curves defined by solutions of linear differential equations.

Remarks on the Obrechkoff inequality

Oberchkoff's inequality says that a polynomial of degree d with non-negative coefficients has at most 2ad/pi zeros in the angle {|arg z|<a}. We improve and generalize this inequality, and study the case of equality.

Metrics with four conic singularities and spherical quadrilaterals

A spherical quadrilateral is a bordered surface homeomorphic to a closed disk, with four distinguished boundary points called corners, equipped with a Riemannian metric of constant curvature 1, except at the corners, and such that the boundary arcs between the corners are geodesic. We discuss the problem of classification of these quadrilaterals and perform the classification up to isometry in the case that two angles at the corners are multiples of pi. The problem is equivalent to classification of Heun's equations with real parameters and unitary monodromy.

On the Bank-Laine conjecture

We resolve a question of Bank and Laine on the zeros of solutions of $w'' + Aw = 0$ where $A$ is an entire function of finite order.

Quasi-exceptional domains

Exceptional domains are domains on which there exists a positive harmonic function, zero on the boundary and such that the normal derivative on the boundary is constant. Recent results classify exceptional domains as belonging to either a certain one-parameter family of simply periodic domains or one of its scaling limits. We introduce quasi-exceptional domains by allowing the boundary values to be different constants on each boundary component. This relaxed definition retains the interesting property of being an \emph{arclength quadrature domain}, and also preserves the connection to the hollow vortex problem in fluid dynamics. We give a partial classification of such domains in terms of certain Abelian differentials. We also provide a new two-parameter family of periodic quasi-exceptional domains. These examples generalize the hollow vortex array found by Baker, Saffman, and Sheffield (1976). A degeneration of regions of this family provide doubly-connected examples.

Metrics with conic singularities and spherical polygons

A spherical n-gon is a bordered surface homeomorphic to a closed disk, with n distinguished boundary points called corners, equipped with a Riemannian metric of constant curvature 1, except at the corners, and such that the boundary arcs between the corners are geodesic. We discuss the problem of classification of these polygons and enumerate them in the case that two angles at the corners are not multiples of pi. The problem is equivalent to classification of some second order linear differential equations with regular singularities, with real parameters and unitary monodromy.

Electrostatic skeletons

Let u be the equilibrium potential of a compact set K. An electrostatic skeleton of K is a positive measure whose closed support has connected complement and no interior, and whose potential is equal to u near infinity. We prove the existence of an electrostatic skeleton for any simplex.

Spectral loci of Sturm--Liouville operators with polynomial potentials

We consider differential equations -y"+P(z,a)y=Ey, where P is a polynomial of the independent variable z depending on a parameter a. The spectral locus is the set of (a,E) such that the equation has a non-trivial solution tending to zero on two fixed rays in the complex plane. We study the topology of the spectral loci for polynomials P of degree 3 or 4.
