Spin-orbit coupling suppression and singlet-state blocking of spin-triplet Cooper pairs

An inhomogeneous magnetic exchange field at a superconductor/ferromagnet interface converts spin-singlet Cooper pairs to a spin-aligned (i.e. spin-polarized) triplet state. Although the decay envelope of such triplet pairs within ferromagnetic materials is well studied, little is known about their decay in non-magnetic metals and superconductors, and in particular in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here we investigate devices in which triplet supercurrents are injected into the s-wave superconductor Nb. In the normal state of Nb, triplet supercurrents decay over a distance of 5 nm, which is an order of magnitude smaller than the decay of spin singlet pairs due to the SOC interacting with the spin associated with triplet pairs. In the superconducting state of Nb, triplet supercurrents are not able to couple with the singlet wavefunction and thus blocked by the absence of available equilibrium states in the singlet gap. The results offer new insight into the dynamics between s-wave singlet and s-wave triplet states.

In-situ creation and control of Josephson junctions with a laser beam

We propose the use of a laser beam tightly focused on a superconducting strip to create a Josephson junction by photothermal effect. The critical current of this junction can be easily controlled by the laser intensity. We show that a periodic modulation of the intensity substantially changes the dynamic properties of the junction and results in the appearance of Shapiro steps without microwave radiation. The experimental realization of optically driven Josephson junctions may open a way for the ultra-fast creation and switching of complex patterns of superconducting devices with tunable geometry and current-phase relations.

Field induced superconducting phase in Superconductor-Normal metal and Superconductor-Superconductor bilayer

We study the proximity effect in a superconductor (S)-normal metal (N) bilayer under in-plane magnetic field. A compensation between the Zeeman effect and the energy splitting between bonding and anti-bonding levels leads to a magnetic field induced superconducting phase in the (H,T) phase diagram of the S-N bilayer well above the standard paramagnetic limit. We demonstrate that the presence of the non-magnetic impurities shrink the region of field induced superconductivity existence in S-N and S-S bilayers.

Oscillations of magnetization and conductivity in anisotropic Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconductors

We derive the fluctuational magnetization and the paraconductivity of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconductors in their normal state. The FFLO superconducting fluctuations induce oscillations of the magnetization between diamagnetism and unusual paramagnetism which originates from the competition between paramagnetic and orbital effects. We also predict a strong anisotropy of the paraconductivity when the FFLO transition is approached in contrast with the case of a uniform BCS state. Finally building a Ginzburg-Levanyuk argument, we demonstrate that these fluctuation effects can be safely treated within the Gaussian approximation since the critical fluctuations are proeminent only within an experimentally inaccessible temperature interval.

Proximity effect in atomic-scaled hybrid superconductor/ferromagnet structures: crucial role of electron spectra

We study the influence of the configuration of the majority and minority spin subbands of electron spectra on the properties of atomic-scaled superconductor-ferromagnet S-F-S and F-S-F hybrid structures. At low temperatures, the S/F/S junction is either a 0 or junction depending on the energy shift between S and F materials and the anisotropy of the Fermi surfaces. We found that the spin switch effect in F/S/F system can be reversed if the minority spin electron spectra in F metal is of the hole-like type.

Anomalous fluctuation regimes at the FFLO transition

Recently some experimental evidences have been obtained in favour of the existence of the inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconducting state in heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_{5} and organic superconductor -(BETS)_{2}FeCl_{4}. However the unambiguous identification of FFLO state remains very difficult. We present the theoretical studies of the Gaussian fluctuations near the tricritical point (where the FFLO modulation appears) and demonstrate that the behavior of the fluctuational specific heat, paraconductivity and diamagnetism is qualitatively different from the usual superconducting transition. Special values of the critical exponent and the crossovers between different fluctuational regimes may provide a unique test for the FFLO state appearance.
