Modulational instability in dispersion oscillating fiber ring cavities

We show that the use of a dispersion oscillating fiber in passive cavities significantly extend modulational instability to novel high-frequency bands, which also destabilize the branches of the steady response which are stable with homogeneous dispersion. By means of Floquet theory, we obtain exact explicit expression for the sideband gain, and a simple analytical estimate for the frequencies of maximum gain. Numerical simulations show that stable stationary trains of pulses can be excited in the cavity.

Harnessing the modulation instability spectrum in optical fibers with a periodic dispersion landscape

We report the experimental demonstration of modulation instability process assisted by a dispersion grating in an optical fiber. A simple analytical model is developed to further analyze and explain the complex dynamics of this process, showing that each of the multiple spectral components grows thanks to a quasi phase-matching mechanism inherent to the periodicity of the waveguide parameters. This model is confirmed by numerical simulations and it is successfully used to tailor the multi-peak modulation instability spectrum shape. These theoretical predictions are confirmed by experiments.

Simple Method for Measuring the Zero-Dispersion Wavelength in Optical Fibers

We propose a very simple method for measuring the zero-dispersion wavelength of an optical fiber as well as the ratio between the third- and fourth-order dispersion terms. The method is based on the four wave mixing process when pumping the fiber in the normal dispersion region, and only requires the measurement of two spectra, provided that a source tunable near the zero-dispersion wavelength is available. We provide an experimental demonstration of the method in a photonic crystal fiber and we show that the measured zero-dispersion wavelength is in good agreement with a low-coherence interferometry measurement.

A microstructured fiber source of photon pairs at widely separated wavelengths

We demonstrate a source of photon pairs with widely separated wavelengths, 810 nm and 1548 nm, generated through spontaneous four-wave mixing in a microstructured fiber. The second-order auto-correlation function g^{(2)}(0) was measured to confirm the non-classical nature of a heralded single photon source constructed from the fiber. The microstructured fiber presented herein has the interesting property of generating photon pairs with wavelengths suitable for a quantum repeater able to link free-space channels with fiber channels, as well as for a high quality telecommunication wavelength heralded single photon source. It also has the advantage of straightforward coupling into optical fiber. These reasons make this photon pair source particularly interesting for long distance quantum communication.

Mechanisms of rogue wave formation

Freak waves, or rogue waves, are one of the fascinating manifestations of the strength of nature. These devastating walls of water appear from nowhere, are short-lived and extremely rare. Despite the large amount of research activities on this subject, neither the minimum ingredients required for their generation nor the mechanisms explaining their formation have been given. Today, it is possible to reproduce such kind of waves in optical fibre systems. In this context, we demonstrate theoretically and numerically that convective instability is the basic ingredient for the formation of rogue waves. This explains why rogues waves are extremely sensitive to noisy environments.
