Orbital-selective time-domain signature of nematicity dynamics in the charge-density-wave phase of La$_{1.65}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$

Understanding the interplay between charge, nematic, and structural ordering tendencies in cuprate superconductors is critical to unraveling their complex phase diagram. Using pump-probe time-resolved resonant x-ray scattering on the (0 0 1) Bragg peak at the Cu $L_3$ and O $K$ resonances, we investigate non-equilibrium dynamics of $Q_a = Q_b = 0$ nematic order and its association with both charge density wave (CDW) order and lattice dynamics in La$_{1.65}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$. The orbital selectivity of the resonant x-ray scattering cross-section allows nematicity dynamics associated with the planar O 2$p$ and Cu 3$d$ states to be distinguished from the response of anisotropic lattice distortions. A direct time-domain comparison of CDW translational-symmetry breaking and nematic rotational-symmetry breaking reveals that these broken symmetries remain closely linked in the photoexcited state, consistent with the stability of CDW topological defects in the investigated pump fluence regime.

Evidence for an orbital dependent Mott transition in the ladders of (La,Ca)$_x$Sr$_{14-x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ derived by electron energy-loss spectroscopy

The knowledge of the charge carrier distribution among the different orbitals of Cu and O is a precondition for the understanding of the physical properties of various Cu-O frameworks. We employ electron energy-loss spectroscopy to elucidate the charge carrier plasmon dispersion in (La, Ca)$_x$Sr$_{14-x}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ in dependency of $x$ as well as temperature. We observe that the energy of the plasmon increases upon increasing Ca content, which signals an internal charge redistribution between the two Cu-O subsystems. Moreover, contrary to an uncorrelated model we come to the conclusion that the holes transferred to the Cu$_2$O$_3$ ladders are mainly located in the bonding and not in the anti-bonding band. This is caused by an orbital dependent Mott transition.

The effect of different in-chain impurities on the magnetic properties of the spin chain compound SrCuO$_2$ probed by NMR

The S=1/2 Heisenberg spin chain compound SrCuO2 doped with different amounts of nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), zinc (Zn) and cobalt (Co) has been studied by means of Cu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Replacing only a few of the S=1/2 Cu ions with Ni, Pd, Zn or Co has a major impact on the magnetic properties of the spin chain system. In the case of Ni, Pd and Zn an unusual line broadening in the low temperature NMR spectra reveals the existence of an impurity-induced local alternating magnetization (LAM), while exponentially decaying spin-lattice relaxation rates $T_1^{-1}$ towards low temperatures indicate the opening of spin gaps. A distribution of gap magnitudes is proven by a stretched spin-lattice relaxation and a variation of $T_1^{-1}$ within the broad resonance lines. These observations depend strongly on the impurity concentration and therefore can be understood using the model of finite segments of the spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain, i.e. pure chain segmentation due to S = 0 impurities. This is surprising for Ni as it was previously assumed to be a magnetic impurity with S = 1 which is screened by the neighboring copper spins. In order to confirm the S = 0 state of the Ni, we performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and compared the measurements to simulated XAS spectra based on multiplet ligand-field theory. Furthermore, Zn doping leads to much smaller effects on both the NMR spectra and the spin-lattice relaxation rates, indicating that Zn avoids occupying Cu sites. For magnetic Co impurities, $T_1^{-1}$ does not obey the gap like decrease, and the low-temperature spectra get very broad. This could be related to the increase of the Neel temperature which was observed by recent muSR and susceptibility measurements, and is most likely an effect of the impurity spin $S\neq0$.

Suppression of the impurity-induced local magnetism by the opening of a spin pseudogap in Ni-doped Sr$_2$CuO$_3$

The $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain compound Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ doped with $1 \%$ and $2 \%$ of Ni impurities has been studied by means of $^{63}$Cu nuclear magnetic resonance. A strong decrease of the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ at low temperatures points toward a spin gap, while a stretching exponent $\lambda < 1$ and a frequency dependence of $T_1^{-1}$ indicate that this spin gap varies spatially and should rather be characterized as a spin pseudogap. The magnitude of the spin pseudogap scales with doping level. Our results therefore evidence the finite-size character of this phenomenon. Moreover, an unusual narrowing of the low temperature NMR lines reveals the suppression of the impurity-induced staggered paramagnetic response with increasing doping level.

Determining the Short-Range Spin Correlations in Cuprate Chain Materials with Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

We report a high-resolution resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering study of the quantum magnetic spin-chain materials Li2CuO2 and CuGeO3. By tuning the incoming photon energy to the oxygen K-edge, a strong excitation around 3.5 eV energy loss is clearly resolved for both materials. Comparing the experimental data to many-body calculations, we identify this excitation as a Zhang-Rice singlet exciton on neighboring CuO4-plaquettes. We demonstrate that the strong temperature dependence of the inelastic scattering related to this high-energy exciton enables to probe short-range spin correlations on the 1 meV scale with outstanding sensitivity.

Magneto-absorption spectra of hydrogen-like yellow exciton series in cuprous oxide: excitons in strong magnetic fields

We study the absorption spectra of the yellow excitons in Cu$_2$O in high magnetic fields using polarization-resolved optical absorption measurements with a high frequency resolution. We show that the symmetry of the yellow exciton results in unusual selection rules for the optical absorption of polarized light and that the mixing of ortho- and para- excitons in magnetic field is important. Our calculation of the energies of the yellow exciton series in an arbitrary magnetic field gives an excellent fit to experimental data and allows us to understand the complex structure of excitonic levels and their magnetic field dependence, which resolves the old-standing disagreement between the results of optical absorption and cyclotron resonance measurements.

Plasmons and Interband Transitions of Ca$_{11}$Sr$_3$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ investigated by Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy studies have been performed in order to get a deeper insight into the electronic structure and elementary excitations of the two-leg ladder system Ca$_{11}$Sr$_3$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$. We find a strong anisotropy of the loss function for momentum transfers along the a and c-crystallographic axis, and a remarkable linear plasmon dispersion for a momentum transfer parallel to the legs of the ladders. The investigated spectral features are attributed to localized and delocalized charge-transfer excitations and the charge carrier plasmon. The charge carrier plasmon position and dispersion in the long wave-length limit agree well with expectations based upon the band structure of the two-leg ladder, while the observed quasi-linear plasmon dispersion might be related to the peculiar properties of underdoped cuprates in general.

Nernst Effect of stripe ordering La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$

We investigate the transport properties of La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=0.04$, 0.08, 0.125, 0.15, 0.2) with a special focus on the Nernst effect in the normal state. Various anomalous features are present in the data. For $x=0.125$ and 0.15 a kink-like anomaly is present in the vicinity of the onset of charge stripe order in the LTT phase, suggestive of enhanced positive quasiparticle Nernst response in the stripe ordered phase. At higher temperature, all doping levels except $x=0.2$ exhibit a further kink anomaly in the LTO phase which cannot unambiguously be related to stripe order. Moreover, a direct comparison between the Nernst coefficients of stripe ordering La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and superconducting La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at the doping levels $x=0.125$ and $x=0.15$ reveals only weak differences. Our findings make high demands on any scenario interpreting the Nernst response in hole-doped cuprates.

Effect of structural distortions on the magnetism of doped spin-Peierls CuGeO3

The chemical selectivity and great sensitivity of the Extended X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy technique allowed the determination, in the paramagnetic phase, of the structural distortions induced by doping in the spin-Peierls CuGeO$_3$ compound. The distorted environments were analyzed as a function of concentration, magnetic nature of impurity and the substitution site (Ni, Mn and Zn impurities on the Cu site, Si impurity on the Ge site). This has led to estimate the variation of the angles and pair distances, and hence to evaluate the magnetic coupling along the Cu chains in the vicinity of the impurities. The antiferromagnetic interaction between Cu first neighbors in the pure sample is found to be weakened around Ni, almost cancelled in the case of Mn doping, and even to change sign, producing a ferromagnetic coupling for Si doping. More generally, the structural distortions on a local scale are shown to be key parameters for the understanding of the magnetic properties of doped spin-Peierls compounds.

Magneto-elastic coupling in hexagonal YMnO_3

We report an ultrasonic investigation of the elastic moduli on a single crystal of hexagonal YMnO_3 as a function of temperature. Stiffening anomalies in the antiferromagnetic Néel state below T_N = 72.4 K are observed on all the four elastic moduli C_{ii}. The anomalies are the most important on C_{11} and C_{66} for in-plane elastic deformations; this is consistent with a strong coupling of the lattice with the in-plane exchange interactions. We use a Landau free energy model to account for these elastic anomalies. We derive an expression which relates the temperature profile of the anomaly to the order parameter; the critical exponent associated to this parameter $β$ = 0.42 is not consistent with a chiral XY or 3D Heisenberg universality class, but more in agreement with a conventional antiferromagnetic long range order. A tiny softening anomaly on C_{11} for which hysteresis effects are observed could be indicative of an interaction between ferroelectric and magnetic domains at T_N. Moreover, magnetic fluctuations effects both above and below T_N are identified through abnormal temperature and magnetic field effects.

The Local Structure of La1.65Eu0.2Sr 0.15CuO4 determined by 63Cu NMR Spectroscopy and Van Vleck Paramagnetism of Eu3+ Ions

We investigate the local symmetry of the tilting of the CuO$_6$ octahedra in La$_{\rm 1.65}$Eu$_{\rm 0.2}$Sr$_{\rm 0.15}$CuO$_{4}$ by means of $^{63}$Cu NMR spectroscopy and the Van Vleck susceptibility of the $\rm Eu^{3+}$ ions. The Cu NMR central line lineshape is sensitive to local structure through the coupling of the $^{63}\rm Cu$ nuclear quadrupole moment to the local electric field gradient. The $\rm Eu^{3+}$ Van Vleck susceptibility, as a single ion effect, locally probes the symmetry of the crystal field at the Eu site. Both techniques independently provide clear evidence for a change of the local tilt symmetry at the first order structural transition from the orthorhombic to the low temperature tetragonal phase, in excellent agreement with the average structure obtained by diffraction techniques. We conclude that the symmetry of the average crystal structure accurately represents the symmetry of the octahedral tilt pattern on a local scale.
