How Personas Can Influence Agents to Play Split or Steal

Personas are often employed to guide large language model agents, yet their effectiveness in shaping strategic behavior in social dilemma settings remains uncertain. To address this, we examined the impact of persona prompts in an iterated Split or Steal game where persona-driven agents interacted with a Virtual Human (VH) controlled by a fixed prompt. Agents were instantiated from four open models (Ministral 3:3b, phi4:14b, Gemma3:12b, and Gemma4:e4b) at two temperature settings (0.3 and 0.7) and deterministic decision with zero temperature, while the VH was powered by GPT 4.1 mini. Across 160 sessions of 15 rounds each conducted in European Portuguese, mutual Split outcomes dominated (roughly 74 percent of rounds), with exploitation occurring in fewer than 11 percent of rounds. Model choice significantly influenced behavior: phi4 and Ministral 3:3b remained consistently cooperative across temperatures, whereas Gemma3:12b and Gemma4:e4b exhibited more varied strategies and outcomes. Analyses based on Big Five personality traits indicated that Prosocial and Principled personas were most consistently cooperative, while Analytical personas were more likely to exploit the VH. Topic analysis revealed that friendship-related dialogue aligns with Split decisions, whereas money and vengeance-related content is more prevalent in Steal outcomes; sentiment labels were predominantly neutral or happy and provided limited additional explanatory value. These findings characterize the interaction between persona prompts and model differences in repeated trust games and serve as a baseline for planned virtual reality studies involving human participants interacting with an embodied VH.

Modifications to a classic BFGS library for use with SIMD-equipped hardware and an AAD library

We introduce certain modifications of the BFGS method for functions that are not parallelizable by nature (having consecutive operations only) taking advantage of SIMD. We also provide a modified LBFGS\texttt{++} library that takes advantage of these modifications, and the use of AAD, and give an interface for AAD users that takes advantage of the modified library automatically. We give two examples to illustrate the performance. The modified library is up to 3.8 times faster for European Swaption curve calibration in ORE (not parallelizable) and 1.4 times faster for calibrating the LMM model by a set of European options.

Moduli of stability for heteroclinic cycles of periodic solutions

We consider $C^2$ vector fields in the three dimensional sphere with an attracting heteroclinic cycle between two periodic hyperbolic solutions with real Floquet multipliers. The proper basin of this attracting set exhibits historic behavior and from the asymptotic properties of its orbits we obtain a complete set of invariants under topological conjugacy in a neighborhood of the cycle. As expected, this set contains the periods of the orbits involved in the cycle, a combination of their angular speeds, the rates of expansion and contraction in linearizing neighborhoods of them, besides information regarding the transition maps and the transition times between these neighborhoods. We conclude with an application of this result to a class of cycles obtained by the lifting of an example of R. Bowen.

Boundary crisis for degenerate singular cycles

The term boundary crisis refers to the destruction or creation of a chaotic attractor when parameters vary. The locus of a boundary crisis may contain regions of positive Lebesgue measure marking the transition from regular dynamics to the chaotic regime. This article investigates the dynamics occurring near a heteroclinic cycle involving a hyperbolic equilibrium point E and a hyperbolic periodic solution P, such that the connection from E to P is of codimension one and the connection from P to E occurs at a quadratic tangency (also of codimension one). We study these cycles as organizing centers of two-parameter bifurcation scenarios and, depending on properties of the transition maps, we find different types of shift dynamics that appear near the cycle. Breaking one or both of the connections we further explore the bifurcation diagrams previously begun by other authors. In particular, we identify the region of crisis near the cycle, by giving information on multipulse homoclinic solutions to E and P as well as multipulse heteroclinic tangencies from P to E, and bifurcating periodic solutions, giving partial answers to the problems (Q1)-(Q3) of E. Knobloch (2008), Spatially localised structures in dissipative systems: open problems, Nonlinearity, 21, 45-60. Throughout our analysis, we focus on the case where E has real eigenvalues and P has positive Floquet multipliers.

Is there switching without suspended horseshoes?

In general, infinite switching behaviour near networks is associated with the existence of suspended horseshoes. Trajectories that realize switching lie within these transitive sets. In this note, revisiting the equivariant Shilnikov scenario, we describe an attracting homoclinic network exhibiting forward switching and without suspended horseshoes in its neighbourhood. Thus we provide an example of an asymptotically stable network exhibiting sensitive dependence on initial conditions.

Dynamics of conservative Bykov cycles: tangencies, generalized cocoon bifurcations and elliptic solutions

This paper presents a mechanism for the coexistence of hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic dynamics arising in a neighbourhood of a conservative Bykov cycle where trajectories turn in opposite directions near the two saddle-foci. We show that {within the class of divergence-free vector fields that preserve the cycle,} tangencies of the invariant manifolds of two hyperbolic saddle-foci densely occur. The global dynamics is persistently dominated by heteroclinic tangencies and by the existence of infinitely many elliptic points coexisting with suspended hyperbolic horseshoes. A generalized version of the Cocoon bifurcations for conservative systems is obtained.

A note on reversibility and Pell equations

We consider hyperbolic toral automorphisms which are reversible with respect to a linear area-preserving involution. We will prove that within this context reversibility is linked to a generalized Pell equation whose solutions we will analyze. Additionally, we will verify to what extent reversibility is a common feature and characterize the generic setting.

A dichotomy in area-preserving reversible maps

In this paper we study R-reversible area-preserving maps f on a two-dimensional Riemannian closed manifold M, i.e. diffeomorphisms f such that Ro f=f^{-1}o R where R is an isometric involution on M. We obtain a C1-residual subset where any map inside it is Anosov or else has a dense set of elliptic periodic orbits. As a consequence we obtain the proof of the stability conjecture for this class of maps. Along the paper we also derive the C1-closing lemma for reversible maps and other perturbation toolboxes.

Generic area-preserving reversible diffeomorphisms

Let M be a surface and R an involution in M whose set of fixed points is a submanifold with dimension 1 and such that R is an isometry. We will show that there is a residual subset of C1 area-preserving R-reversible diffeomorphisms which are either Anosov or have zero Lyapunov exponents at almost every point.
