Fault-Ride-Through Coordination Strategy for Offshore AC Islands with Multi-Infeed HVDC Interconnections

Large-scale offshore Wind Farms (WFs) are considered key assets towards realizing a sustainable power system. These systems are often configured as offshore AC islands and their integration largely depends on the High-Voltage-Direct-Current (HVDC) technology. This topology, while it enables cost-effective transmission over large offshore distances, may lead to operational challenges. Specifically, the operation of offshore AC islands during faults and the grid code requirement fulfillment are identified as a major challenges for their large-scale deployment. To address this pressing issue, a comprehensive coordination control strategy for the different participating converters in multi-infeed AC offshore islands during Fault Ride Through (FRT) operation is presented in this work. The proposed strategy introduces advanced control functions in the FRT schemes of both the HVDC and WF converters, such as zero active and reactive power injection during faults, as well as post-fault active power droop control coordination to tackle power imbalances. The proposed FRT coordination strategy is validated through both extensive simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC, as well as with Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) experimental results, considering both AC and DC faults.

Admittance Identification of Grid-Forming Inverters Using Time and Frequency-Domain Techniques

The increasing integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) into the power grid introduces new challenges, requiring detailed electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies to analyze system interactions. Despite these needs, access to the internal firmware of power electronic devices remains restricted due to stringent nondisclosure agreements enforced by manufacturers. To address this, we explore three system identification techniques: sweep frequency response analysis (SFRA), step excitation method (SEM), and eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA). SFRA employs sinusoidal signals of varying frequencies to measure the system's frequency response, while SEM and ERA utilize step functions to derive time-domain responses and transform them into Laplace-domain transfer functions. All three approaches are shown to provide consistent results in identifying the dq admittance of grid-forming inverters (GFM) over a frequency range of 1 Hz to 100 Hz.

Energy Systems Test Case Discovery Enabled by Test Case Profile and Repository

Smart energy systems comprise multiple domains like power, thermal, control, information, and communication technology, which increases the complexity of research and development studies. This expansion also requires larger and ever so complex experimental pilot environments driving the demand for geographically distributed multi-research infrastructure tests. The Holistic Test Description approach supports the design of multi-domain and multi-research infrastructure tests by organizing the test cases into comprehensive segments, ensuring all relevant items for testing are covered. These test cases eventually form a pool, which to understand holistically would require studying and reading all the descriptions. This work proposes therefore the concept of Test Case Profiles to improve test case discovery and the structured creation of them. Test Case Profiles add further structure to the indexing in test case repositories. Along with the proposed indexing method, four different use cases are introduced to motivate additional applications of the proposed concept.
