Cascaded Composite Turbulence and Misalignment: Statistical Characterization and Applications to Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Empowered Wireless Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) empowered high-frequency (HF) wireless systems are expected to become the supporting pillar for several reliability and data rate hungry applications. Such systems are, however, sensitive to misalignment and atmospheric phenomena including turbulence. Most of the existing studies on the performance assessment of RIS-empowered wireless systems ignore the impact of the aforementioned phenomena. Motivated by this, the current contribution presents a theoretical framework for analyzing the performance of multi-RIS empowered HF wireless systems. More specifically, we statistically characterize the cascaded composite turbulence and misalignment channels in terms of probability density and cumulative distribution functions. Building upon the derived analytical expressions, we present novel closed-form formulas that quantify the joint impact of turbulence and misalignment on the outage performance for two scenarios of high interest namely cascaded multi-RIS-empowered free space optics (FSO) and terahertz (THz) wireless systems. In addition, we provide an insightful outage probability upper-bound for a third scenario that considers parallel multi-RIS-empowered FSO systems. Our results highlight the importance of accurately modeling both turbulence and misalignment when assessing the performance of such systems.

Channel modeling for in-body optical wireless communications

Next generation in-to-out-of body biomedical applications have adopted optical wireless communications (OWCs). However, by delving into the published literature, a gap is recognised in modeling the in-to-out-of channel, since most published contributions neglect the particularities of different type of tissues. Towards this direction, in this paper we present a novel pathloss and scattering models for in-to-out-of OWC links. Specifically, we derive extract analytical expressions that accurately describe the absorption of the five main tissues' constituents, namely fat, water, melanin, oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood. Moreover, we formulate a model for the calculation of the absorption coefficient of any generic biological tissue. Next, by incorporating the impact of scattering in the aforementioned model we formulate the complete pathloss model. The developed theoretical framework is verified by means of comparisons between the estimated pathloss and experimental measurements from independent research works. Finally, we illustrate the accuracy of the theoretical framework in estimating the optical properties of any generic tissue based on its constitution. The extracted channel model is capable of boosting the design of optimized communication protocols for a plethora of biomedical applications.

Metasurface-Coated Devices: A New Paradigm for Energy-Efficient and Secure 6G Communications

The sixth-generation (6G) era comes with the challenge of offering highly energy-efficient and autonomous communications securely. In this direction, we report energy efficiency (EE), energy harvesting (EH), and secure performance by employing power-collecting metasurface-coated devices capable of supporting ultra-low-power (ULP) transmissions. Contrary to reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), where the reflected signal can be combined at the receiver by being treated as transmitted from a relay, the proposed metasurface claddings can be deployed at either or both the transmitter and receiver. The passive metasurface-coated devices can achieve ultra-high EE and EH besides the signal detection, combined with an enhanced secrecy rate at the legitimate user and/or improved spying capabilities of the eavesdroppers under ULP transmission. To quantify their efficiency, we provide a holistic model for the utilization of the metasurface shells. Building upon the aforementioned model, preliminary results are presented that reveal the unprecedented superiority of the proposed concept compared to the RIS paradigm. Additionally, we enumerate the main advantages of the new concept and define its role in the 6G era. Finally, possible research directions are discussed.

Toward Autonomous Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Through Wireless Energy Harvesting

In this work, we examine the potential of autonomous operation of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) using wireless energy harvesting from information signals. To this end, we first identify the main RIS power-consuming components and introduce a suitable power-consumption model. Subsequently, we introduce a novel RIS power-splitting architecture that enables simultaneous energy harvesting and beamsteering. Specifically, a subset of the RIS unit cells (UCs) is used for beamsteering while the remaining ones absorb energy. For the subset allocation, we propose policies obtained as solutions to two optimization problems. The first problem aims at maximizing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver without violating the RIS's energy harvesting demands. Additionally, the objective of the second problem is to maximize the RIS harvested power, while ensuring an acceptable SNR at the receiver. We prove that under particular propagation conditions, some of the proposed policies deliver the optimal solution of the two problems. Furthermore, we report numerical results that reveal the efficiency of the policies with respect to the optimal and very high-complexity brute-force design approach. Finally, through a case study of user tracking, we showcase that the RIS power-consumption demands can be secured by harvesting energy from information signals.

Pathloss modeling for in-body optical wireless communications

Optical wireless communications (OWCs) have been recognized as a candidate enabler of next generation in-body nano-scale networks and implants. The development of an accurate channel model capable of accommodating the particularities of different type of tissues is expected to boost the design of optimized communication protocols for such applications. Motivated by this, this paper focuses on presenting a general pathloss model for in-body OWCs. In particular, we use experimental measurements in order to extract analytical expressions for the absorption coefficients of the five main tissues' constitutions, namely oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood, water, fat, and melanin. Building upon these expressions, we derive a general formula for the absorption coefficient evaluation of any biological tissue. To verify the validity of this formula, we compute the absorption coefficient of complex tissues and compare them against respective experimental results reported by independent research works. Interestingly, we observe that the analytical formula has high accuracy and is capable of modeling the pathloss and, therefore, the penetration depth in complex tissues.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Optimal Placement in Millimeter-Wave Networks

This work discusses the optimal reconfigurable intelligent surface placement in highly-directional millimeter wave links. In particular, we present a novel system model that takes into account the relationship between the transmission beam footprint at the RIS plane and the RIS size. Subsequently, based on the model we derive the end-to-end expression of the received signal power and, furthermore, provide approximate closed-form expressions in the case that the RIS size is either much smaller or at least equal to the transmission beam footprint. Moreover, building upon the expressions, we derive the optimal RIS placement that maximizes the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio. Finally, we substantiate the analytical findings by means of simulations, which reveal important trends regarding the optimal RIS placement according to the system parameters.

Machine Learning in Nano-Scale Biomedical Engineering

Machine learning (ML) empowers biomedical systems with the capability to optimize their performance through modeling of the available data extremely well, without using strong assumptions about the modeled system. Especially in nano-scale biosystems, where the generated data sets are too vast and complex to mentally parse without computational assist, ML is instrumental in analyzing and extracting new insights, accelerating material and structure discoveries, and designing experience as well as supporting nano-scale communications and networks. However, despite these efforts, the use of ML in nano-scale biomedical engineering remains still under-explored in certain areas and research challenges are still open in fields such as structure and material design and simulations, communications and signal processing, and bio-medicine applications. In this article, we review the existing research regarding the use of ML in nano-scale biomedical engineering. In more detail, we first identify and discuss the main challenges that can be formulated as ML problems. These challenges are classified into the three aforementioned main categories. Next, we discuss the state of the art ML methodologies that are used to countermeasure the aforementioned challenges. For each of the presented methodologies, special emphasis is given to its principles, applications, and limitations. Finally, we conclude the article with insightful discussions, that reveal research gaps and highlight possible future research directions.

Performance Evaluation of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted D-band Wireless Communication

In the recent years, the proliferation of wireless data traffic has led the scientific community to explore the use of higher unallocated frequency bands, such as the millimeter wave and terahertz (0.1-10 THz) bands. However, they are prone to blockages from obstacles laid in the transceiver path. To address this, in this work, the use of a reconfigurable-intelligent-surface (RIS) to restore the link between a transmitter (TX) and a receiver (RX), operating in the D-band (110-170 GHz) is investigated. The system performance is evaluated in terms of pathgain and capacity considering the RIS design parameters, the TX/RX-RIS distance and the elevation angles from the center of the RIS to the transceivers.

All-Optical Cochlear Implants

In the present work, we introduce a novel cochlear implant (CI) architecture, namely all-optical CI (AOCI), which directly converts acoustic to optical signals capable of stimulating the cochlear neurons. First, we describe the building-blocks (BBs) of the AOCI, and explain their functionalities as well as their interconnections. Next, we present a comprehensive system model that incorporates the technical characteristics and constraints of each BB, the transdermal-optical-channel particularities, i.e. optical path-loss and external-implanted device stochastic pointing-errors, and the cochlear neurons biological properties. Additionally, in order to prove the feasibility of the AOCI architecture, we conduct a link-budget analysis that outputs novel closed-form expressions for the instantaneous and average photon flux that is emitted on the cochlear neurons. Likewise, we define three new key-performance-indicators (KPIs), namely probability of hearing, probability of false-hearing, and probability of neural damage. The proposed theoretical framework is verified through respective simulations, which not only quantify the efficiency of the proposed architecture, but also reveal an equilibrium between the optical transmission power and the patient's safety, as well as the AOCI BBs specifications. Finally, it is highlighted that the AOCI approach is greener and safer than the conventional CIs.

Relay-Based Blockage and Antenna Misalignment Mitigation in THz Wireless Communications

The proliferation of wireless devices in recent years has caused a spectrum shortage, which led the scientific community to explore the potential of using terahertz (THz) communications. However, THz systems suffer from severe path attenuation, blockage, and antenna misalignment. In this paper, we present a relay-based blockage and antenna misalignment mitigation approach. In more detail, two relay selection policies are employed, namely best and random relay selection. The system performance under both policies is evaluated and compared in terms of average throughput and the probability that throughput of a link is below the quality of service (QoS) threshold, using Monte Carlo simulations. It was observed that the effect of both blockage and misalignment can be mitigated using relays. Moreover, the gain of using relaying to mitigate blockage is much more significant.

A cooperative localization-aided tracking algorithm for THz wireless systems

In this paper, a novel cooperation-aided localization and tracking approach, suitable for terahertz (THz) wireless systems is presented. It combines an angle of arrival (AoA) tracking algorithm with the two-way time of arrival method, in order to accurately track the user equipment (UE) position and reduce the deafness caused by the estimation errors of the tracking algorithms. This algorithm can be used by one base station (BS) to estimate the UE position, or by multiple BSs, that cooperate with each other to increase the accuracy of the estimations, as well as the probability of successful estimations and guarantee low-estimation overhead. The efficiency of the algorithm is evaluated in terms of deafness and probability of successful AoA estimation and is compared with the corresponding performance of the fast channel tracking algorithm.
