Cyclicity and iterated logarithms in the Dirichlet space

Let $D(μ)$ denote a harmonically weighted Dirichlet space on the unit disc $\mathbb D$. We show that outer functions $f\in D(μ)$ are cyclic in $D(μ)$, whenever $\log f$ belongs to the Pick-Smirnov class $N^+(D(μ))$. If $f$ has $H^\infty$-norm less than or equal to 1, then cyclicity can also be checked via iterated logarithms. For example, we show that such outer functions $f$ are cyclic, whenever $\log(1+ \log(1/f))\in N^+(D(μ))$. This condition can be checked by verifying that $\log(1+ \log(1/f))\in D(μ)$. If $f$ satisfies a mild extra condition, then the conditions also become necessary for cyclicity.

Brennan's conjecture holds for semigroups of holomorphic functions

In the present note, we give a short proof of Brennan's conjecture in the special case of continuous semigroups of holomorphic functions. We apply classical techniques of complex analysis in conjunction with recent results on Békollé-Bonami weights and spectra of integration operators.

Invariant Subspaces for Generalized Differentiation and Volterra Operators

In this paper we provide a far-reaching generalization of the existent results about invariant subspaces of the differentiation operator $D=\frac{\partial}{\partial t}$ on $C^\infty(0,1)$ and the Volterra operator $Vf(t)=\int_0^tf(s)ds$, on $L^2(0,1)$. We use an abstract approach to study invariant subspaces of pairs $D,V$ with $DV=I$, where $V$ is compact and quasi-nilpotent and $D$ is unbounded densely defined and closed on the same Hilbert space. Our results cover many differential operators, like Schrödinger operators and a large class of other canonical systems, as well as the so-called compact self-adjoint operators with removable spectrum recently studied by Baranov and Yakubovich. Our methods are based on a model for such pairs which involves de Branges spaces of entire functions and plays a crucial role in the development. However, a number of difficulties arise from the fact that our abstract operators do not necessarily identify with the usual operators on such spaces, but with rank one perturbations of those, which, in terms of invariant subspaces creates a number of challenging problems.

Composition of analytic paraproducts

For a fixed analytic function $g$ on the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$, we consider the analytic paraproducts induced by $g$, which are defined by $T_gf(z)= \int_0^z f(ζ)g'(ζ)\,dζ$, $S_gf(z)= \int_0^z f'(ζ)g(ζ)\,dζ$, and $M_gf(z)= f(z)g(z)$. The boundedness of these operators on various spaces of analytic functions on $\mathbb{D}$ is well understood. The original motivation for this work is to understand the boundedness of compositions of two of these operators, for example $T_g^2, \,T_gS_g,\, M_gT_g$, etc. Our methods yield a characterization of the boundedness of a large class of operators contained in the algebra generated by these analytic paraproducts acting on the classical weighted Bergman and Hardy spaces in terms of the symbol $g$. In some cases it turns out that this property is not affected by cancellation, while in others it requires stronger and more subtle restrictions on the oscillation of the symbol $g$ than the case of a single paraproduct.

Generalized de Branges-Rovnyak spaces

Given the reproducing kernel $k$ of the Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_k$ we study spaces $\mathcal{H}_k(b)$ whose reproducing kernel has the form $k(1-bb^*)$, where $b$ is a row-contraction on $\mathcal{H}_k$. In terms of reproducing kernels this it the most far-reaching generalization of the classical de Branges-Rovnyaks spaces, as well as their very recent generalization to several variables. This includes the so called sub-Bergman spaces in one or several variables. We study some general properties of $\mathcal{H}_k(b)$ e.g. when the inclusion map into $\mathcal{H}$ is compact. Our main result provides a model for $\mathcal{H}_k(b)$ reminiscent of the Sz.-Nagy-Foiaş model for contractions. As an application we obtain sufficient conditions for the containment and density of the linear span of $\{k_w:w\in\mathcal{X}\}$ in $\mathcal{H}_k(b)$. In the standard cases this reduces to containment and density of polynomials. These methods resolve a very recent conjecture regarding polynomial approximation in spaces with kernel $\frac{(1-b(z)b(w)^*)^m}{(1-z\overline w)^β}, 1\leq m<β, m\in\mathbb{N}$.

Words of analytic paraproducts on Hardy and weighted Bergman spaces

For a fixed analytic function g on the unit disc, we consider the analytic paraproducts induced by g, which are formally defined by $T_gf(z)=\int_0^zf(ζ)g'(ζ)dζ$, $S_gf(z)=\int_0^zf'(ζ)g(ζ)dζ$, and $M_gf(z)=g(z)f(z)$. We are concerned with the study of the boundedness of operators in the algebra $\mathcal{A}_g$ generated by the above operators acting on Hardy, or standard weighted Bergman spaces on the disc. The general question is certainly very challenging, since operators in $\mathcal{A}_g$ are finite linear combinations of finite products (words) of $T_g,S_g,M_g$ which may involve a large amount of cancellations to be understood. The results in the paper "Composition of analytic paraproducts, J. Math. Pures Appl. 158 (2022) 293--319" show that boundedness of operators in a fairly large subclass of $\mathcal{A}_g$ can be characterized by one of the conditions $g\in H^\infty$, or $g^n$ belongs to $BMOA$ or the Bloch space, for some integer $n>0$. However, it is also proved that there are many operators, even single words in $\mathcal{A}_g$ whose boundedness cannot be described in terms of these conditions. The present paper provides a considerable progress in this direction. Our main result provides a complete quantitative characterization of the boundedness of an arbitrary word in $\mathcal{A}_g$ in terms of a ``fractional power'' of the symbol $g$, that only depends on the number of appearances of each of the letters $T_g,S_g,M_g$ in the given word.

Cyclicity and iterated logarithms in the Drury-Arveson space

Let $H^2_d$ be the Drury-Arveson space, and let $f\in H^2_d$ have bounded argument and no zeros in $\mathbb{B}_d$. We show that $f$ is cyclic in $H^2_d$ if and only if $\log f$ belongs to the Pick-Smirnov class $N^+(H^2_d)$. Furthermore, for non-vanishing functions $f\in H^2_d$ with bounded argument and $H^\infty$-norm less than 1, cyclicity can also be tested via iterated logarithms. For example, we show that $f$ is cyclic if and only if $\log(1+\log (1/f))\in N^+(H^2_d)$. Thus, a sufficient condition for cyclicity is that $\log(1+\log (1/f))\in H^2_d$. More generally, our results hold for all radially weighted Besov spaces that also are complete Pick spaces.

Cyclicity in the Drury-Arveson space and other weighted Besov spaces

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a space of analytic functions on the unit ball $\mathbb B_d$ in $\mathbb C^d$ with multiplier algebra $\mathrm{Mult}(\mathcal{H})$. A function $f\in \mathcal{H}$ is called cyclic if the set $[f]$, the closure of $\{φf:φ\in \mathrm{Mult}(\mathcal{H})\}$, equals $\mathcal{H}$. For multipliers we also consider a weakened form of the cyclicity concept. Namely for $n\in \mathbb N_0$ we consider the classes $$\mathcal{C}_n(\mathcal{H})=\{φ\in \mathrm{Mult}(\mathcal H):φ\ne 0, [φ^n]=[φ^{n+1}]\}.$$ Many of our results hold for $N$:th order radially weighted Besov spaces on $\mathbb B_d$, but we describe our results only for the Drury-Arveson space $H^2_d$ here. Letting $\mathbb C_{stable}[z]$ denote the stable polynomials for $\mathbb B_d$, i.e. the $d$-variable complex polynomials without zeros in $\mathbb B_d $, we show that \begin{align*} &\text{ if }d \text{ is odd, then } \mathbb C_{stable}[z]\subseteq \mathcal C_{\frac{d-1}{2}}(H^2_d), \text{ and }\\ &\text{ if }d \text{ is even, then } \mathbb C_{stable}[z]\subseteq \mathcal C_{\frac{d}{2}-1}(H^2_d).\end{align*} For $d=2$ and $d=4$ these inclusions are the best possible, but in general we can only show that if $0\le n\le \frac{d}{4}-1$, then $\mathbb C_{stable}[z]\nsubseteq \mathcal C_n(H^2_d)$. For functions other than polynomials we show that if $f,g\in H^2_d$ such that $f/g\in H^\infty$ and $f$ is cyclic, then $g$ is cyclic. We use this to prove that if $f,g\in H^2_d$ extend to be analytic in a neighborhood of $\overline{\mathbb B_d }$, have no zeros in $\mathbb B_d $, and their zero sets coincide on the boundary, then $f$ is cyclic if and only if $g$ is cyclic. Furthermore, if for $f\in H^2_d\cap C(\overline{\mathbb B_d })$ the set $Z(f)\cap \partial \mathbb B_d$ embeds a cube of real dimension $\ge 3$, then $f$ is not cyclic in the Drury-Arveson space.

Multiplier tests and subhomogeneity of multiplier algebras

Multipliers of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces can be characterized in terms of positivity of $n \times n$ matrices analogous to the classical Pick matrix. We study for which reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces it suffices to consider matrices of bounded size $n$. We connect this problem to the notion of subhomogeneity of non-selfadjoint operator algebras. Our main results show that multiplier algebras of many Hilbert spaces of analytic functions, such as the Dirichlet space and the Drury-Arveson space, are not subhomogeneous, and hence one has to test Pick matrices of arbitrarily large matrix size $n$. To treat the Drury-Arveson space, we show that multiplier algebras of certain weighted Dirichlet spaces on the disc embed completely isometrically into the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson space.

Free outer functions in complete Pick spaces

Jury and Martin establish an analogue of the classical inner-outer factorization of Hardy space functions. They show that every function $f$ in a Hilbert function space with a normalized complete Pick reproducing kernel has a factorization of the type $f=φg$, where $g$ is cyclic, $φ$ is a contractive multiplier, and $\|f\|=\|g\|$. In this paper we show that if the cyclic factor is assumed to be what we call free outer, then the factors are essentially unique, and we give a characterization of the factors that is intrinsic to the space. That lets us compute examples. We also provide several applications of this factorization.

The common range of co-analytic Toeplitz operators on the Drury-Arveson space

We characterize the common range of the adjoints of cyclic multiplication operators on the Drury--Arveson space. We show that a function belongs to this common range if and only if its Taylor coefficients satisfy a simple decay condition. To achieve this, we introduce the uniform Smirnov class on the ball and determine its dual space. We show that the dual space of the uniform Smirnov class equals the dual space of the strictly smaller Smirnov class of the Drury-Arveson space, and that this in turn equals the common range of the adjoints of cyclic multiplication operators.

Weak products of complete Pick spaces

Let $\mathcal H$ be the Drury-Arveson or Dirichlet space of the unit ball of $\mathbb C^d$. The weak product $\mathcal H\odot\mathcal H$ of $\mathcal H$ is the collection of all functions $h$ that can be written as $h=\sum_{n=1}^\infty f_n g_n$, where $\sum_{n=1}^\infty \|f_n\|\|g_n\|<\infty$. We show that $\mathcal H\odot\mathcal H$ is contained in the Smirnov class of $\mathcal H$, i.e. every function in $\mathcal H\odot\mathcal H$ is a quotient of two multipliers of $\mathcal H$, where the function in the denominator can be chosen to be cyclic in $\mathcal H$. As a consequence we show that the map $\mathcal N \to clos_{\mathcal H\odot\mathcal H} \mathcal N$ establishes a 1-1 and onto correspondence between the multiplier invariant subspaces of $\mathcal H$ and of $\mathcal H\odot\mathcal H$. The results hold for many weighted Besov spaces $\mathcal H$ in the unit ball of $\mathbb C^d$ provided the reproducing kernel has the complete Pick property. One of our main technical lemmas states that for weighted Besov spaces $\mathcal H$ that satisfy what we call the multiplier inclusion condition any bounded column multiplication operator $\mathcal H \to \oplus_{n=1}^\infty \mathcal H$ induces a bounded row multiplication operator $\oplus_{n=1}^\infty \mathcal H \to \mathcal H$. For the Drury-Arveson space $H^2_d$ this leads to an alternate proof of the characterization of interpolating sequences in terms of weak separation and Carleson measure conditions.

An $H^p$ scale for complete Pick spaces

We define by interpolation a scale analogous to the Hardy $H^p$ scale for complete Pick spaces, and establish some of the basic properties of the resulting spaces, which we call $\mathcal{H}^p$. In particular, we obtain an $\mathcal{H}^p-\mathcal{H}^q$ duality and establish sharp pointwise estimates for functions in $\mathcal{H}^p$.

Interpolating sequences in spaces with the complete Pick property

We characterize interpolating sequences for multiplier algebras of spaces with the complete Pick property. Specifically, we show that a sequence is interpolating if and only if it is separated and generates a Carleson measure. This generalizes results of Carleson for the Hardy space and of Bishop, Marshall and Sundberg for the Dirichlet space. Furthermore, we investigate interpolating sequences for pairs of Hilbert function spaces.

Backward shift and nearly invariant subspaces of Fock-type spaces

We study the structure of the backward shift invariant and nearly invariant subspaces in weighted Fock-type spaces $\mathcal{F}_W^p$, whose weight $W$ is not necessarily radial. We show that in the spaces $\mathcal{F}_W^p$ which contain the polynomials as a dense subspace (in particular, in the radial case) all nontrivial backward shift invariant subspaces are of the form $\mathcal{P}_n$, i.e., finite dimensional subspaces consisting of polynomials of degree at most $n$. In general, the structure of the nearly invariant subspaces is more complicated. In the case of spaces of slow growth (up to zero exponential type) we establish an analogue of de Branges' Ordering Theorem. We then construct examples which show that the result fails for general Fock-type spaces of larger growth.

Symmetric shift-invariant subspaces and harmonic maps

The Grassmannian model represents harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces by families of shift-invariant subspaces of a Hilbert space. We impose a natural symmetry condition on the shift-invariant subspaces that corresponds to considering an important class of harmonic maps into symmetric and $k$-symmetric spaces. In particular, we obtain new general forms for such symmetric shift-invariant subspaces and for the corresponding extended solutions.

Harmonic maps and shift-invariant subspaces

We investigate in detail the connection between harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces into the unitary group $\U(n)$ and their Grassmannian models: these are families of shift-invariant subspaces of $L^2(S^1,\C^n)$. With the help of operator-theoretic methods we derive a criterion for finiteness of the uniton number which has a large number of applications discussed in the paper.

Factorizations induced by complete Nevanlinna-Pick factors

We prove a factorization theorem for reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces whose kernel has a normalized complete Nevanlinna-Pick factor. This result relates the functions in the original space to pointwise multipliers determined by the Nevanlinna-Pick kernel and has a number of interesting applications. For example, for a large class of spaces including Dirichlet and Drury-Arveson spaces, we construct for every function $f$ in the space a pluriharmonic majorant of $|f|^2$ with the property that whenever the majorant is bounded, the corresponding function $f$ is a pointwise multiplier.
