Discontinuous actions on cones, joins, and $n$-universal bundles

We prove that locally countably-compact Hausdorff topological groups $\mathbb{G}$ act continuously on their iterated joins $E_n\mathbb{G}:=\mathbb{G}^{*(n+1)}$ (the total spaces of the Milnor-model $n$-universal $\mathbb{G}$-bundles) as well as the colimit-topologized unions $E\mathbb{G}=\varinjlim_n E_n\mathbb{G}$, and the converse holds under the assumption that $\mathbb{G}$ is first-countable. In the latter case other mutually equivalent conditions provide characterizations of local countable compactness: the fact that $\mathbb{G}$ acts continuously on its first self-join $E_1\mathbb{G}$, or on its cone $\mathcal{C}\mathbb{G}$, or the coincidence of the product and quotient topologies on $\mathbb{G}\times \mathcal{C}X$ for all spaces $X$ or, equivalently, for the discrete countably-infinite $X:=\aleph_0$. These can all be regarded as weakened versions of $\mathbb{G}$'s exponentiability, all to the effect that $\mathbb{G}\times -$ preserves certain colimit shapes in the category of topological spaces; the results thus extend the equivalence (under the separation assumption) between local compactness and exponentiability.

The combinatorics of permuting and preserving curve-bound spectra

We prove that continuous spectrum- and commutativity-preserving maps to $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb{C})$ from the space of normal (real or complex) $n\times n$, $n\ge 3$ matrices with spectra contained in a given continuous-injection interval image $Λ\subseteq \mathbb{C}$ or $\mathbb{R}$ are (a) conjugations; (b) transpose conjugations, or (c) orderings of spectra according to an orientation of $Λ$, with fixed eigenspaces. This generalizes results of Petek's (self-maps of real or complex Hermitian matrices) and the author's (complex Hermitian matrices as the domain, $\mathcal{M}_n(\mathbb{C})$ as the codomain). An application rules out possibility (c) for normal matrices with spectra constrained to a simple closed curve, extending a result by the author, Gogić and Tomašević to the effect that continuous commutativity and spectrum preservers on unitary groups are (transpose) conjugations. The involution preserving eigenspaces and complex-conjugating eigenvalues is a novel possibility beyond (a), (b) and (c) if the domain consists of all semisimple operators with $Λ$-bound spectra instead; its continuity (or lack thereof) and whether or not that map furthermore extends continuously to arbitrary $Λ$-constrained-spectrum matrices hinge on the geometry and regularity of $Λ$.

Spectral finiteness, quantum norm continuity and classical points

We prove various notions of uniform continuity for compact-quantum-group representations on Hilbert or Banach spaces equivalent to having finite spectrum, i.e. finitely many isotypic components. This generalizes the classical analogue for compact-group representations on Banach spaces, and relies in part on Riemann-Lebesgue-type decay properties for Fourier coefficients of elements in minimal tensor products with compact-quantum-group function algebras.

Orbit misbehavior, isotropy discontinuity, and large isotypic components

Let $\mathbb{G}$ be a compact Hausdorff group acting on a compact Hausdorff space $X$, $α$ an irreducible $\mathbb{G}$-representation, and $C(X)$ the $C^*$-algebra of complex-valued continuous functions on $X$. We prove that the isotypic component $C(X)_α$ is finitely generated as a module over the invariant subalgebra $C(X/\mathbb{G})\subseteq C(X)$ precisely when the map sending $x\in X$ to the dimension of the space of vectors in $α$ invariant under the isotropy group $\mathbb{G}_x$ is locally constant. This (a) specializes back to an observation of De Commer-Yamashita equating the finite generation of all $C(X)_α$ with the Vietoris continuity of $x\mapsto \mathbb{G}_x$, and (b) recovers and extends Watatani's examples of infinite-index expectations resulting from non-free finite-group actions. We also show that the action of a compact group $\mathbb{G}$ on the maximal equivariant compactification on the disjoint union of its Lie-group quotients has tubes about all orbits precisely when $\mathbb{G}$ is Lie. This is the converse (via a canonical construction) of the well-known fact that actions of compact Lie groups on Tychonoff spaces admit tubes.

Continuity and equivariant dimension

We study the local-triviality dimensions of actions on $C^*$-algebras, which are invariants developed for noncommutative Borsuk-Ulam theory. While finiteness of the local-triviality dimensions is known to guarantee freeness of an action, we show that free actions need not have finite weak local-triviality dimension. Moreover, the local-triviality dimensions of a continuous field may be greater than those of its individual fibers, and the dimensions may fail to vary continuously across the fibers. However, in certain circumstances upper semicontinuity of the weak local-triviality dimension is guaranteed. We examine these results and counterexamples with a focus on noncommutative tori and noncommutative spheres, both in terms of computation and theory.

Banach manifolds of spectrally small quantum-group representations

We prove that finite-spectrum representations of compact quantum groups either in unital $C^*$-algebras $A$ or on Banach spaces $E$ exhibit the same Banach-space-modeled differential-geometric structure as their classical analogues: (a) they are Banach analytic manifolds; (b) locally homogeneous under conjugation by the pertinent Banach Lie group $U(A)$ or $GL(E)$; (c) with orbit maps fibering principally; (d) and hence with said orbit maps admitting local analytic splitting. We also identify the finite-spectrum unitary representations as precisely those that are norm-continuous in the appropriate sense when the compact quantum group has at least one classical point, again generalizing the classical parallel present in various forms in work of Kallman, Shtern and the author.

Grassmannian spines, projection closure operators, and diametric sweeps

For positive integers $r<d<n$ equip the powerset $2^{\mathbb{G}(r,V)}$ of the $r$-plane Grassmannian of an $n$-dimensional Hilbert space with the closure operator attaching to a set of $r$-planes the smallest superset which along with two $r$-planes also contains all $r$-dimensional orthogonal projections of one onto any $d$-plane containing the other. In the regime $2r\le d$ the classification of closed subsets of $\mathbb{G}(r,V)$ rigidifies, these being precisely the sets of $r$-planes containing a fixed $(\le r)$-plane. The result generalizes its $(r,d,n)=(1,2,3)$ instance, of use in recent geometric-rigidity results motivated by matrix preserver problems. An auxiliary result classifies the balls centered at $p_0\in \mathbb{R^d}$ as the compact fixed points of the dynamical system transforming $K\subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ into its $p_0$-based diametric sweep: the union of all diameter-$p_0p$ balls for $p\in K$.

Frame eversion and contextual geometric rigidity

We prove rigidity results describing contextually-constrained maps defined on Grassmannians and manifolds of ordered independent line tuples in finite-dimensional vector or Hilbert spaces. One statement in the spirit of the Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry classifies maps between full Grassmannians of two $n$-dimensional Hilbert spaces, $n\ge 3$, preserving dimension and lattice operations for pairs with commuting orthogonal projections, as precisely those induced by semilinear injections unique up to scaling. In a different but related direction, denote the manifolds of ordered orthogonal (linearly-independent) $n$-tuples of lines in an $n$-dimensional Hilbert space $V$ by $\mathbb{F}^{\perp}(V)$ (respectively $\mathbb{F}(V)$) and, for partitions $π$ of the set $\{1..n\}$, call two tuples $π$-linked if the spans along $π$-blocks agree. A Wigner-style rigidity theorem proves that the symmetric maps $\mathbb{F}^{\perp}(\mathbb{C}^n)\to \mathbb{F}(\mathbb{C}^n)$, $n\ge 3$ respecting $π$-linkage are precisely those induced by semilinear injections, hence by linear or conjugate-linear maps if also assumed measurable. On the other hand, in the $\mathbb{F}(\mathbb{C}^n)$-defined analogue the only other possibility is a qualitatively new type of purely-contextual-global symmetry transforming a tuple $(\ell_i)_i$ of lines into $\left(\left(\bigoplus_{j\ne i}\ell_j\right)^{\perp}\right)_i$.

Equivariant Banach-bundle germs

Consider a continuous bundle $\mathcal{E}\to X$ of Banach/Hilbert spaces or Banach/$C^*$-algebras over a paracompact base space, equivariant for a compact Lie group $\mathbb{U}$ operating on all structures involved. We prove that in all cases homogeneous equivariant subbundles extend equivariantly from $\mathbb{U}$-invariant closed subsets of $X$ to closed invariant neighborhoods thereof (provided the fibers are semisimple in the Banach-algebra variant). This extends a number of results in the literature (due to Fell for non-equivariant local extensibility around a single point for $C^*$-algebras and the author for semisimple Banach algebras). The proofs are based in part on auxiliary results on (a) the extensibility of equivariant compact-Lie-group principal bundles locally around invariant closed subsets of paracompact spaces, as a consequence of equivariant-bundle classifying spaces being absolute neighborhood extensors in the relevant setting and (b) an equivariant-bundle version of Johnson's approximability of almost-multiplicative maps from finite-dimensional semisimple Banach algebras with Banach morphisms.

A new characterization of Kac-type discrete quantum groups

We obtain two related characterizations of discrete quantum groups and discrete quantum groups of Kac type as allegorical group objects in the symmetric monoidal dagger category of quantum sets and relations, of interest to quantum predicate logic and quantum information theory. Specifically, we characterize discrete quantum groups by the existence of an inversion relation and discrete quantum groups of Kac type by the existence of an inversion function. This confirms a conjectured description of discrete quantum groups of Kac type and brings them within the purview of category-internal universal algebra.

Quantum-rigid random quantum graphs

A quantum graph $\mathcal{G}$ housed by a matrix algebra $M_n$ can be encoded as an operator system $\mathcal S=\mathcal{S}_{\mathcal{G}}\le M_n$. There are two sensible notions of quantum automorphism group for any such: $\mathrm{Qut}(\mathcal G)$, capturing the quantum symmetries of the adjacency matrix $A:M_n\to M_n$ attached to $\mathcal{G}$, and $\mathrm{Qut}(\mathcal S\le M_n)$, the quantum group acting universally on $M_n$ so as to preserve its $C^*$ structure, standard trace, and subspace $\mathcal{S}\le M_n$. The two quantum groups coincide classically, but diverge in general. We nevertheless show that both are generically trivial in the sense that they are so for $\mathcal{S}\le M_n$ ranging over a non-empty Zariski-open set under all reasonable dimensional constraints on $\dim \mathcal{S}$ and $n$. This extends analogous prior results by the first and third authors to the effect that classical symmetry groups of still-quantum graphs are generically trivial, and offers a fully quantum counterpart to the familiar probabilistic almost-rigidity of finite graphs. An auxiliary result sheds some light on the relationship between the two notions of quantum automorphism group, identifying the universal preserver of the quantum adjacency matrix of $\mathcal{G}$ with the quantum automorphism group not of $\mathcal{S}\le M_n$, but rather of the complex conjugate $\overline{\mathcal{S}}\le M_n$.

Monadic functors forgetful of (dis)inhibited actions

We prove a number of results of the following common flavor: for a category $\mathcal{C}$ of topological or uniform spaces with all manner of other properties of common interest (separation / completeness / compactness axioms), a group (or monoid) $\mathbb{G}$ equipped with various types of topological structure (topologies, uniformities) and the corresponding category $\mathcal{C}^{\mathbb{G}}$ of appropriately compatible $\mathbb{G}$-flows in $\mathcal{C}$, the forgetful functor $\mathcal{C}^{\mathbb{G}}\to \mathcal{C}$ is monadic. In all cases of interest the domain category $\mathcal{C}^{\mathbb{G}}$ is also cocomplete, so that results on adjunction lifts along monadic functors apply to provide equivariant completion and/or compactification functors. This recovers, unifies and generalizes a number of such results in the literature due to de Vries, Mart'yanov and others on existence of equivariant compactifications / completions and cocompleteness of flow categories.

Non-commutative branched covers and bundle unitarizability

We prove that (a) the sections space of a continuous unital subhomogeneous $C^*$ bundle over compact metrizable $X$ admits a finite-index expectation onto $C(X)$, answering a question of Blanchard-Gogić (in the metrizable case); (b) such expectations cannot, generally, have ``optimal index'', answering negatively a variant of the same question; and (c) a homogeneous continuous Banach bundle over a locally paracompact base space $X$ can be renormed into a Hilbert bundle in such a manner that the original space of bounded sections is $C_b(X)$-linearly Banach-Mazur-close to the resulting Hilbert module over the algebra $C_b(X)$ of continuous bounded functions on $X$. This last result resolves quantitatively another problem posed by Gogić.

Spans and convex combinations of boundary-valued continuous functions

For an $(n\ge 2)$-dimensional real Banach space $E$ with unit ball $E_{\le 1}$ and a topological space $X$ arbitrary elements in $C(X,E_{\le 1})$ are always expressible as linear combinations of at most three functions valued in the unit sphere $\partial E_{\le 1}$. On the other hand, for normal $X$, $C(X,E_{\le 1})$ can only be the convex hull of $C(X,\partial E_{\le 1})$ if the covering dimension of $X$ is strictly smaller than $\dim E$. A variant of this remark is the characterization of normal $X$ with $\dim X<\dim E$ as precisely those for which $C(X,E_{\le 1})$ is the convex hull of nowhere-vanishing continuous $X\to E_{\le 1}$ or, equivalently, that of continuous functions $X\to E_{[r,1]}$, $r\in (0,1)$ valued in arbitrarily thin spherical shells. This extends a number of results due to Peck, Cantwell, Bogachev, Mena-Jurado, Navarro-Pascual and Jiménez-Vargas and others revolving around the realizability of the unit ball of $C(X,E)$ as a convex hull of its extreme points for strictly convex and/or complex $E$.

Coassociative structures on self-injective algebras

For general finite-dimensional self-injective algebra $A$ we construct a family of injective coassociative coproducts $A\to A\otimes A$, all $A$-bimodule morphisms. In particular such structures always exist, confirming a conjecture of Hernandez, Walton and Yadav. The coproducts are indexed by subsets of $\{1,\cdots,m(i)\}\times \{1,\cdots,m(ν^{-1}i)\}$, where $A\cong \mathrm{End}_Λ(M)$ is the general form of a self-injective algebra in terms of a basic Frobenius $Λ$, the $m(i)$, $1\le i\le n$ are the multiplicities of the indecomposable projective $Λ$-modules in $M$, and $ν$ is the Nakayama permutation of $Λ$. We also characterize those among the coproducts introduced in this fashion, in terms this combinatorial data, which are counital.

Algebra bundles, projective flatness and rationally-deformed tori

We show that isomorphism classes $[\mathcal{A}]$ of flat $q\times q$ matrix bundles $\mathcal{A}$ (or projectively flat rank-$q$ complex vector bundles $\mathcal{E}$) on a pro-torus $\mathbb{T}$ are in bijective correspondence with the Čech cohomology group $H^2(\mathbb{T},μ_q:=\text{$q^{th}$ roots of unity})$ (respectively $H^2(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{Z})$) via the image of $[A]\in H^1(\mathbb{T},PGL(q,\mathcal{C}_{\mathbb{T}}))$ through $H^1(\mathbb{T},PGL(q,\mathcal{C}_{\mathbb{T}}))\xrightarrow{\quad}H^2(\mathbb{T},μ(q,\mathcal{C}_{\mathbb{T}}))$ (respectively the first Chern class $c_1(\mathcal{E})$). This is in the spirit of Auslander-Szczarba's result identifying real flat bundles on the torus with their first two Stiefel-Whitney classes, and contrasts with classifying spaces $BΓ$ of compact Lie groups $Γ$ (as opposed to $\mathbb{T}^n\cong B\mathbb{Z}^n$), on which flat non-trivial vector bundles abound. The discussion both recovers the Disney-Elliott-Kumjian-Raeburn classification of rational non-commutative tori $\mathbb{T}^n_θ$ with a different, bundle-theoretic proof, and sheds some light on the connection between topological invariants associated to $\mathbb{T}^2_θ$, $θ\in\mathbb{Q}$ by Rieffel and respectively Høegh-Krohn-Skjelbred.

Finite-dimensional modules over associative equivariant map algebras

Let $X$ and $\mathfrak{a}$ be an affine scheme and (respectively) a finite-dimensional associative algebra over an algebraically-closed field $\Bbbk$, both equipped with actions by a linearly-reductive linear algebraic group $G$. We describe the simple finite-dimensional modules over the algebra of $G$-equivariant maps $X\to \mathfrak{a}$ in terms of the representation theory of the fixed-point subalgebras $\mathfrak{a}^x:=\mathfrak{a}^{G_x}\le \mathfrak{a}$, $G_x$ being the respective isotropy groups of closed-orbit $k$-points $x\in X$. This answers a question of E. Neher and A. Savage, extending an analogous result for (also linearly-reductive) finite-group actions. Moreover, the full category of finite-dimensional modules admits a direct-sum decomposition indexed by closed orbits.

Non-representable quantum measures

Grade-$d$ measures on a $σ$-algebra $\mathcal{A}\subseteq 2^X$ over a set $X$ are generalizations of measures satisfying one of a hierarchy of weak additivity-type conditions initially introduced as interference operators in quantum mechanics. Every signed polymeasure $λ$ on $(X,\mathcal{A})^d$ produces a grade-$d$ measure as its diagonal $\widetildeλ(A):=λ(A,\cdots,A)$, and we prove that as soon as $d\ge 2$ measures (as opposed to polymeasures) do not suffice: the separate $σ$-additivity of a $λ$ producing $μ=\widetildeλ$ cannot, generally, be amplified to global $σ$-additivity. This amends a result in the literature, asserting the contrary in case $d=2$.
