Existence and rigidity of quantum isometry groups for compact metric spaces

We prove the existence of a quantum isometry groups for new classes of metric spaces: (i) geodesic metrics for compact connected Riemannian manifolds (possibly with boundary) and (ii) metric spaces admitting a uniformly distributed probability measure. In the former case it also follows from recent results of the second author that the quantum isometry group is classical, i.e. the commutative $C^*$-algebra of continuous functions on the Riemannian isometry group.

Property (T), property (F) and residual finiteness for discrete quantum groups

We investigate connections between various rigidity and softness properties for discrete quantum groups. After introducing a notion of residual finiteness, we show that it implies the Kirchberg factorization property for the discrete quantum group in question. We also prove the analogue of Kirchberg's theorem, to the effect that conversely, the factorization property and property (T) jointly imply residual finiteness. We also apply these results to certain classes of discrete quantum groups obtained by means of bicrossed product constructions and study the preservation of the properties (factorization, residual finiteness, property (T)) under extensions of discrete quantum groups.

Rigidity results for automorphisms of Hardy-Toeplitz $C^*$-algebras

We prove a number of results on the automorphisms of and isomorphisms between Hardy-Toeplitz algebras $\mathcal{T}(D)$ associated to bounded symmetric domains $D$: that the stable isomorphism class of $\mathcal{T}(D)$ determines $D$ (even when it is reducible), that for reducible domains $D=D_1\times\cdots \times D_s$ the automorphisms of the Shilov boundary $\check{S}(D)$ induced by those of $\mathcal{T}(D)$ permute the Shilov boundaries $\check{S}(D_i)$, and that by contrast to arbitrary solvable algebras, automorphisms of $\mathcal{T}(D)$ that are trivial on their character spaces $\check{S}(D)$ are trivial on the entire spectrum $\widehat{\mathcal{T}(D)}$.

Non-commutative groups as prescribed polytopal symmetries

We study properties of the realizations of groups as the combinatorial automorphism group of a convex polytope. We show that for any non-abelian group $G$ with a central involution there is a centrally symmetric polytope with $G$ as its combinatorial automorphisms. We show that for each integer $n$, there are groups that cannot be realized as the combinatorial automorphisms of convex polytopes of dimension at most $n$. We also give an optimal lower bound for the dimension of the realization of a group as the group of isometries that preserves a convex polytope.

Tree-optimized directed graphs

For an additive submonoid $\mathcal{M}$ of $\mathbb{R}_{\ge 0}$, the weight of an $\mathcal{M}$-labeled directed graph is the sum of all of its edge labels, while the content is the product of the labels. Having fixed $\mathcal{M}$ and a directed tree $E$, we prove a general result on the shape of directed $\mathcal{M}$-labeled graphs $Γ$ of weight $N\in \mathcal{M}$ maximizing the sum of the contents of all copies $E\subset Γ$. This specializes to recover a result of Hajac and Tobolski on the maximal number of length-$k$ paths in a directed acyclic graph. It also applies to prove a conjecture by the same authors on the maximal sum of entries of $A^k$ for a nilpotent $\mathbb{R}_{\ge 0}$-valued square matrix $A$ whose entries add up to $N$. Finally, we apply the same techniques to obtain the maximal number of stars with $a$ arms in a directed graph with $N$ edges.

Leavitt vs. $C^*$ pullbacks

We show that certain pullbacks of $*$-algebras equivariant with respect to a compact group action remain pullbacks upon completing to $C^*$-algebras. This unifies a number of results in the literature on graph algebras, showing that pullbacks of Leavitt path algebras lift automatically to pullbacks of the corresponding graph $C^*$-algebras.

Non-surjective pullbacks of graph C*-algebras from non-injective pushouts of graphs

We find a substantial class of pairs of $*$-homomorphisms between graph C*-algebras of the form $C^*(E)\hookrightarrow C^*(G)\twoheadleftarrow C^*(F)$ whose pullback C*-algebra is an AF graph C*-algebra. Our result can be interpreted as a recipe for determining the quantum space obtained by shrinking a quantum subspace. There is a variety of examples from noncommutative topology, such as quantum complex projective spaces (including the standard Podleś quantum sphere) or quantum teardrops, that instantiate the result. Furthermore, to go beyond AF graph C*-algebras, we consider extensions of graphs over sinks and prove an analogous theorem for the thus obtained graph C*-algebras.

Affine equivalence for quadratic rotation symmetric Boolean functions

Let $f_n(x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_{n-1})$ denote the algebraic normal form (polynomial form) of a rotation symmetric (RS) Boolean function of degree $d$ in $n \geq d$ variables and let $wt(f_n)$ denote the Hamming weight of this function. Let $(0, a_1, \ldots, a_{d-1})_n$ denote the function $f_n$ of degree $d$ in $n$ variables generated by the monomial $x_0x_{a_1} \cdots x_{a_{d-1}}.$ Such a function $f_n$ is called monomial rotation symmetric (MRS). It was proved in a $2012$ paper that for any MRS $f_n$ with $d=3,$ the sequence of weights $\{w_k = wt(f_k):~k = 3, 4, \ldots\}$ satisfies a homogeneous linear recursion with integer coefficients. This result was gradually generalized in the following years, culminating around $2016$ with the proof that such recursions exist for any rotation symmetric function $f_n.$ Recursions for quadratic RS functions were not explicitly considered, since a $2009$ paper had already shown that the quadratic weights themselves could be given by an explicit formula. However, this formula is not easy to compute for a typical quadratic function. This paper shows that the weight recursions for the quadratic RS functions have an interesting special form which can be exploited to solve various problems about these functions, for example, deciding exactly which quadratic RS functions are balanced.

Symbolic dynamics and rotation symmetric Boolean functions

We identify the weights $wt(f_n)$ of a family $\{f_n\}$ of rotation symmetric Boolean functions with the cardinalities of the sets of $n$-periodic points of a finite-type shift, recovering the second author's result that said weights satisfy a linear recurrence. Similarly, the weights of idempotent functions $f_n$ defined on finite fields can be recovered as the cardinalities of curves over those fields and hence satisfy a linear recurrence as a consequence of the rationality of curves' zeta functions. Weil's Riemann hypothesis for curves then provides additional information about $wt(f_n)$. We apply our results to the case of quadratic functions and considerably extend the results in an earlier paper of ours.

Projective discrete modules over profinite groups

We show that the category of discrete modules over an infinite profinite group has no non-zero projective objects and does not satisfy Ab4*. We also prove the same types of results in a generalized setting using a ring with linear topology.

Hopf algebras with enough quotients

A family of algebra maps $H\to A_i$ whose common domain is a Hopf algebra is said to be jointly inner faithful if it does not factor simultaneously through a proper Hopf quotient of $H$. We show that tensor and free products of jointly inner faithful maps of Hopf algebras are again jointly inner faithful, generalizing a number of results in the literature on torus generation of compact quantum groups.

Topological generation results for free unitary and orthogonal groups

We show that for every $N\ge 3$ the free unitary group $U^+_N$ is topologically generated by its classical counterpart $U_N$ and the lower-rank $U^+_{N-1}$. This allows for a uniform inductive proof that a number of finiteness properties, known to hold for all $N\ne 3$, also hold at $N=3$. Specifically, all discrete quantum duals $\widehat{U^+_N}$ and $\widehat{O^+_N}$ are residually finite, and hence also have the Kirchberg factorization property and are hyperlinear. As another consequence, $U^+_N$ are topologically generated by $U_N$ and their maximal tori $\widehat{\mathbb{Z}^{*N}}$ (dual to the free groups on $N$ generators) and similarly, $O^+_N$ are topologically generated by $O_N$ and their tori $\widehat{\mathbb{Z}_2^{*N}}$.

Gauge freeness for Cuntz-Pimsner algebras

To every $C^*$ correspondence over a $C^*$-algebra one can associate a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra generalizing crossed product constructions, graph $C^*$-algebras, and a host of other classes of operator algebras. Cuntz-Pimsner algebras come equipped with a `gauge action' by the circle group and its finite subgroups. For unital Cuntz-Pimsner algebras, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the gauge actions (by either the circle or its closed subgroups) to be free.

Integrals in left coideal subalgebras and group-like projections

We develop a theory of right group-like projections in Hopf algebras linking them with the theory of left coideal subalgebras with two sided counital integrals. Every right group-like projection is associated with a left coideal subalgebra, maximal among the ones containing the given group-like projection as an integral, and we show that that subalgebra is finite dimensional. We observe that in a semisimple Hopf algebra $H$ every left coideal subalgebra has an integral and we prove a 1-1 correspondence between right group-like projections and left coideal subalgebras of $H$. We provide a number of equivalent conditions for a right group-like projections to be left group-like projection and prove a 1-1 correspondence between semisimple left coideal subalgebras preserved by the squared antipode and two sided group-like projections. We also classify left coideal subalgebras in Taft Hopf algebras $H_{n^2}$ over a field $\mathbb{k}$, showing that the automorphism group splits them into - a class of cardinality $|\mathbb{k}|-1$ of semisimple ones which correspond to right group-like projections which are not two sided; - finitely many semisimple singletons, each corresponding to two sided group-like projection; the number of those singletons for $H_{n^2}$ is equal to the number of divisors of $n$; - finitely many singletons, each non-semisimple and admitting no right group-like projection; the number of those singletons for $H_{n^2}$ is equal to the number of divisors of $n$. In particular we answer the question of Landstad and Van Daele showing that there do exist right group-like projections which are not left group-like projections.

Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of cosemisimple Hopf algebras

In this note, we compute the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of cosemisimple Hopf algebras that arise as deformations of a linearly reductive algebraic group. Our work lies in a purely algebraic setting and generalizes results of Goodearl-Zhang (2007), of Banica-Vergnioux (2009), and of D'Andrea-Pinzari-Rossi (2017).

Invariants in Noncommutative Dynamics

When a compact quantum group $H$ coacts freely on unital $C^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$, the existence of equivariant maps $A \to B$ may often be ruled out due to the incompatibility of some invariant. We examine the limitations of using invariants, both concretely and abstractly, to resolve the noncommutative Borsuk-Ulam conjectures of Baum-Dabrowski-Hajac. Among our results, we find that for certain finite-dimensional $H$, there can be no well-behaved invariant which solves the Type 1 conjecture for all free coactions of $H$. This claim is in stark contrast to the case when $H$ is finite-dimensional and abelian. In the same vein, it is possible for all iterated joins of $H$ to be cleft as comodules over the Hopf algebra associated to $H$. Finally, two commonly used invariants, the local-triviality dimension and the spectral count, may both change in a $θ$-deformation procedure.

Generic quantum metric rigidity

We introduce the coherent algebra of a compact metric measure space by analogy with the corresponding concept for a finite graph. As an application we show that upon topologizing the collection of isomorphism classes of compact metric measure spaces appropriately, the subset consisting of those with trivial compact quantum automorphism group is of second Baire category. The latter result can be paraphrased as saying that "most" compact metric measure spaces have no (quantum) symmetries; in particular, they also have trivial ordinary (i.e. classical) automorphism group.

Translations in quantum groups

Let $H$ be the Hopf $C^*$-algebra of continuous functions on a (locally) compact quantum group of either reduced or full type. We show that endomorphisms of $H$ that respect its right regular comodule structure are translations by elements of largest classical subgroup of $G$. Furthermore, we show that for compact $G$ such an endomorphism is automatically an automorphism regardless of the quantum group norm on the $C^*$-algebra $H$; this answers a question of Piotr M. Hajac.
