Synchronization of Josephson oscillations in mesa array of BSCCO single crystal through the Josephson plasma waves in base crystal

Using mesa array of $\rm{Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}}$ single crystal was demonstrated recently as a promising route to enhance the radiation power generated by Josephson oscillations in mesas. We study the synchronization in such an array via the plasma waves in the base crystal. First, we analyze plasma oscillations inside the base crystal generated by the synchronized mesa array and the associated dissipation. We then solve the dynamic equation for superconducting phase numerically to find conditions for synchronization and to check the stability of synchronized state. We find that mesas are synchronized when the cavity resonance of mesas matches with that of the base crystal. An optimal configuration of mesa arrays is also obtained.

Theory and simulations on strong pinning of vortex lines by nanoparticles

The pinning of vortex lines by an array of nanoparticles embedded inside superconductors has become the most efficient practical way to achieve high critical currents. In this situation pinning occurs via trapping of the vortex-line segments and the critical current is determined by the typical length of the trapped segments. To verify analytical estimates and develop a quantitative description of strong pinning, we numerically simulated isolated vortex lines driven through an array of nanoparticles. We found that the critical force grows roughly as the square root of the pin density and it is strongly suppressed by thermal noise. The configurations of pinned lines are strongly anisotropic, displacements in the drive directions are much larger than in the transverse direction. Moreover, we found that the roughening index for the longitudinal displacements exceeds one. This indicates that the local stresses in the critical region increase with the total line length and the elastic description breaks down in the thermodynamic limit. Thermal noise reduces the anisotropy of displacements in the critical regions and straightens the lines.

Composite to tilted vortex lattice transition in $Bi_2 Sr_2 CaCu_2 O_{8+δ}$ in oblique fields

Precision measurements of the vortex phase diagram in single crystals of the layered superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ in oblique magnetic fields confirm the existence of a second phase transition, in addition to the usual first order vortex lattice melting line $H_{m}(T)$. The transition has a strong first order character, is accompanied by strong hysteresis, and intersects the melting line in a tricritical point ($H_{m}^{\perp}$, $H^{\parallel}_{cr}$). Its field dependence and the changing character of the melting line at the tricritical point strongly suggest that the ground state for magnetic fields closely aligned with the superconducting layers is a lattice of uniformly tilted vortex lines.

Josephson vortices and solitons inside pancake vortex lattice in layered superconductors

In very anisotropic layered superconductors a tilted magnetic field generates crossing vortex lattices of pancake and Josephson vortices (JVs). We study the properties of an isolated JV in the lattice of pancake vortices. JV induces deformations in the pancake vortex crystal, which, in turn, substantially modify the JV structure. The phase field of the JV is composed of two types of phase deformations: the regular phase and vortex phase. The phase deformations with smaller stiffness dominate. The contribution from the vortex phase smoothly takes over with increasing magnetic field. We find that the structure of the cores experiences a smooth yet qualitative evolution with decrease of the anisotropy. At large anisotropies pancakes have only small deformations with respect to position of the ideal crystal while at smaller anisotropies the pancake stacks in the central row smoothly transfer between the neighboring lattice positions forming a solitonlike structure. We also find that even at high anisotropies pancake vortices strongly pin JVs and strongly increase their viscous friction.

Vortex matter in layered superconductors without Josephson coupling: numerical simulations within a mean-field approach

We study vortex matter in layered superconductors in the limit of zero Josephson coupling. The long range of the interaction between pancake vortices in the c-direction allows us to employ a mean-field method: all attractive inter-layer interactions are reduced to an effective substrate potential, which pancakes experience in addition to the same-layer pancake repulsion. We perform numerical simulations of this mean-field model using two independent numerical implementations with different simulation methods (Monte-Carlo sampling and Langevin molecular dynamics). The substrate potential is updated self-consistently from the averaged pancake density. Depending on temperature, this potential converges to a periodic profile (crystal) or vanishes (liquid). We compute thermodynamic properties of the system, such as the melting line, the instability line of the crystal, and the entropy jump across the melting transition. The simulation results are in good agreement with approximate analytical calculations.
