Non-minimal Einstein-Maxwell theory: the Fresnel equation and the Petrov classification of a trace-free susceptibility tensor

We construct a classification of dispersion relations for the electromagnetic waves non-minimally coupled to the space-time curvature, based on the analysis of the susceptibility tensor, which appears in the non-minimal Einstein-Maxwell theory. We classify solutions to the Fresnel equation for the model with a trace-free non-minimal susceptibility tensor according to the Petrov scheme. For all Petrov types we discuss specific features of the dispersion relations and plot the corresponding wave surfaces.

Einstein-Maxwell-axion theory: Dyon solution with regular electric field

In the framework of Einstein-Maxwell-axion theory we consider static spherically symmetric solutions, which describe a magnetic monopole in the axionic environment. These solutions are interpreted as the solutions for an axionic dyon, the electric charge of which is composite, i.e., in addition to the standard central electric charge, it includes an effective electric charge induced by the axion-photon coupling. We focus on the analysis of that solutions, which are characterized by the electric field regular at the center. Special attention is paid to the solutions with the electric field, which is vanishing at the center, has the Coulombian asymptote and thus display an extremum at some distant sphere. Constraints on the electric and effective scalar charges of such an object are discussed.

Self-interaction in the Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics: Spacetimes with angular defects

We consider the self-interaction phenomenon in the framework of the Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics. In the present paper, we obtain the self-interaction potential energy of a charge at rest for the spacetimes with topological defects of two types: for the axially symmetric spacetime of the straight cosmic string and the spherically symmetric global monopole spacetime. It is shown that the behavior of this expression depends essentially on the angular defect, in spite of the Bopp-Podolsky model parameter, which plays the role of a scale factor. In contrast with the usual Maxwell electrodynamics, the self-interaction energy for the Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics appears to be finite everywhere and the standard renormalization procedure is not required.

Magnetic black holes and monopoles in a nonminimal Einstein-Yang-Mills theory with a cosmological constant: Exact solutions

Alternative theories of gravity and their solutions are of considerable importance since at some fundamental level the world can reveal new features. Indeed, it is suspected that the gravitational field might be nonminimally coupled to the other fields at scales not yet probed, bringing into the forefront nonminimally coupled theories. In this mode, we consider a nonminimal Einstein-Yang-Mills theory with a cosmological constant. Imposing spherical symmetry and staticity for the spacetime and a magnetic Wu-Yang ansatz for the Yang-Mills field, we find expressions for the solutions of the theory. Further imposing constraints on the nonminimal parameters, we find a family of exact solutions of the theory depending on five parameters, namely, two nonminimal parameters, the cosmological constant, the magnetic charge, and the mass. These solutions represent magnetic monopoles and black holes in magnetic monopoles with de Sitter, Minkowskian, and anti-de Sitter asymptotics, depending on the sign and value of the cosmological constant $Λ$. We classify completely the family of solutions with respect to the number and the type of horizons and show that the spacetime solutions can have, at most, four horizons. For particular sets of the parameters, these horizons can become double, triple, and quadruple. For instance, for a positive cosmological constant $Λ$, there is a critical $Λ_c$ for which the solution admits a quadruple horizon, evocative of the $Λ_c$ that appears for a given energy density in both the Einstein static and Eddington-Lema\^ıtre dynamical universes. As an example of our classification, we analyze solutions in the Drummond-Hathrell nonminimal theory that describe nonminimal black holes. Another application is with a set of regular black holes previously treated.

Regular nonminimal magnetic black holes in spacetimes with a cosmological constant

We consider new regular exact spherically symmetric solutions of a nonminimal Einstein--Yang-Mills theory with a cosmological constant and a gauge field of magnetic Wu-Yang type. The most interesting solutions found are black holes with metric and curvature invariants that are regular everywhere, i.e., regular black holes. We set up a classification of the solutions according to the number and type of horizons. The structure of these regular black holes is characterized by four specific features: a small cavity in the neighborhood of the center, a repulsion barrier off the small cavity, a distant equilibrium point, in which the metric function has a minimum, and a region of Newtonian attraction. Depending on the sign and value of the cosmological constant the solutions are asymptotically de Sitter (dS), asymptotically flat, or asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS).

Nonminimal black holes with regular electric field

We discuss the problem of identification of coupling constants, which describe interactions between photons and space-time curvature, using exact regular solutions to the extended equations of the nonminimal Einstein-Maxwell theory. We argue the idea that three nonminimal coupling constants in this theory can be reduced to the single guiding parameter, which plays the role of nonminimal radius. We base our consideration on two examples of exact solutions obtained earlier in our works: the first of them describes a nonminimal spherically symmetric object (star or black hole) with regular radial electric field; the second example represents a nonminimal Dirac-type object (monopole or black hole) with regular metric. We demonstrate that one of the inflexion points of the regular metric function identifies a specific nonminimal radius, thus marking the domain of dominance of nonminimal interactions.

Dark energy fingerprints in the nonminimal Wu-Yang wormhole structure

We discuss new exact solutions to nonminimally extended Einstein-Yang-Mills equations describing spherically symmetric static wormholes supported by the gauge field of the Wu-Yang type in a dark energy environment. We focus on the analysis of three types of exact solutions to the gravitational field equations. Solutions of the first type relate to the model, in which the dark energy is anisotropic, i.e., the radial and tangential pressures do not coincide. Solutions of the second type correspond to the isotropic pressure tensor; in particular, we discuss the exact solution, for which the dark energy is characterized by the equation of state for a string gas. Solutions of the third type describe the dark energy model with constant pressure and energy density. For the solutions of the third type, we consider in detail the problem of horizons and find constraints for the parameters of nonminimal coupling and for the constitutive parameters of the dark energy equation of state, which guarantee that the nonminimal wormholes are traversable.

Axion-induced oscillations of cooperative electric field in a cosmic magneto-active plasma

We consider one cosmological application of an axionic extension of the Maxwell-Vlasov theory, which describes axionically induced oscillatory regime in the state of global magnetic field evolving in the anisotropic expanding (early) universe. We show that the cooperative electric field in the relativistic plasma, being coupled to the pseudoscalar (axion) and global magnetic fields, plays the role of a regulator in this three-level system; in particular, the cooperative (Vlasov) electric field converts the regime of anomalous growth of the pseudoscalar field, caused by the axion-photon coupling at the inflationary epoch of the universe expansion, into an oscillatory regime with finite density of relic axions. We analyze solutions to the dispersion equations for the axionically induced cooperative oscillations of the electric field in the relativistic plasma.

Self-interaction in the Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics: Can the observable mass of a charged particle depend on its acceleration?

In this paper we obtain the expression for the self-force in the model with the Lagrangian containing additional terms, quadratic in Maxwell tensor derivatives (so-called Bopp-Podolsky electrodynamics). Features of this force are analyzed for various limiting cases. When a charged particle moves along straight line with a uniform acceleration, an explicit formula is found. In the framework of the considered model, an observable renormalized particle mass is shown to depend on its acceleration. This dependence allows, in principle, to extract experimentally a value of the particle bare mass.

Nonminimal Einstein-Maxwell-Vlasov-axion model

We establish a new self-consistent system of equations accounting for a nonminimal coupling of the cooperative gravitational, electromagnetic and pseudoscalar (axion) fields in a multi-component relativistic plasma. The axionic extension of the nonminimal Einstein-Maxwell-Vlasov theory is based on two consistent procedures. First, we use the Lagrange formalism to obtain nonminimal equations for the gravitational, electromagnetic and pseudoscalar fields with the additional sources generated in plasma. Second, we use the Vlasov version of the relativistic kinetic theory of the plasma, guided by the cooperative macroscopic electromagnetic, gravitational and axionic fields, to describe adequately the response of the plasma on the variations of these fields. In order to show the self-consistency of this approach we check directly the compatibility conditions for the master equations for the cooperative fields. Using these compatibility conditions we reconstruct the ponderomotive force, which acts on the plasma particles, and discuss the necessary conditions for existence of the distribution function of the equilibrium type.

Electromagnetic waves in an axion-active relativistic plasma non-minimally coupled to gravity

We consider cosmological applications of a new self-consistent system of equations, accounting for a nonminimal coupling of the gravitational, electromagnetic and pseudoscalar (axion) fields in a relativistic plasma. We focus on dispersion relations for electromagnetic perturbations in an initially isotropic ultrarelativistic plasma coupled to the gravitational and axion fields in the framework of isotropic homogeneous cosmological model of the de Sitter type. We classify the longitudinal and transversal electromagnetic modes in an axionically active plasma and distinguish between waves (damping, instable or running), and nonharmonic perturbations (damping or instable). We show that for the special choice of the guiding model parameters the transversal electromagnetic waves in the axionically active plasma, nonminimally coupled to gravity, can propagate with the phase velocity less than speed of light in vacuum, thus displaying a possibility for a new type of resonant particle-wave interactions.

Nonminimal coupling for the gravitational and electromagnetic fields: Traversable electric wormholes

We discuss new exact solutions of a three-parameter nonminimal Einstein-Maxwell model. The solutions describe static spherically symmetric objects with and without center, supported by an electric field nonminimally coupled to gravity. We focus on a unique one-parameter model, which admits an exact solution for a traversable electrically charged wormhole connecting two universes, one asymptotically flat the other asymptotically de Sitter ones. The relation between the asymptotic mass and charge of the wormhole and its throat radius is analyzed. The wormhole solution found is thus a nonminimal realization of the idea of Wheeler about charge without charge and shows that, if the world is somehow nonminimal in the coupling of gravity to electromagnetism, then wormhole appearance, or perhaps construction, is possible.

Non-minimal monopoles of the Dirac type as realization of the censorship conjecture

We discuss a class of exact solutions of a three-parameter non-minimally extended Einstein-Maxwell model, which are attributed to non-minimal magnetic monopoles of the Dirac type. We focus on the investigation of the gravitational field of Dirac monopoles for those models, for which the singularity at the central point is hidden inside of an event horizon independently on the mass and charge of the object. We obtained the relationships between the non-minimal coupling constants, for which this requirement is satisfied. As explicit examples, we consider in detail two one-parameter models: first, non-minimally extended Reissner-Nordström model (for the magnetically charged monopole), second, the Drummond-Hathrell model.

Effective metrics in the non-minimal Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory

We formulate a self-consistent non-minimal five-parameter Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs (EYMH) model and analyse it in terms of effective (associated, color and color-acoustic) metrics. We use a formalism of constitutive tensors in order to reformulate master equations for the gauge, scalar and gravitational fields and reconstruct in the algebraic manner the so-called associated metrics for the Yang-Mills field. Using WKB-approximation we find color metrics for the Yang-Mills field and color-acoustic metric for the Higgs field in the framework of five-parameter EYMH model. Based on explicit representation of these effective metrics for the EYMH system with uniaxial symmetry, we consider cosmological applications for Bianchi-I, FLRW and de Sitter models. We focus on the analysis of the obtained expressions for velocities of propagation of longitudinal and transversal color and color-acoustic waves in a (quasi)vacuum interacting with curvature; we show that curvature coupling results in time variations of these velocities. We show, that the effective metrics can be regular or can possess singularities depending on the choice of the parameters of non-minimal coupling in the cosmological models under discussion. We consider a physical interpretation of such singularities in terms of phase velocities of color and color-acoustic waves, using the terms ``wave stopping'' and ``trapped surface''.

Non-minimal pp-wave Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs model: color cross-effects induced by curvature

Non-minimal interactions in the pp-wave Einstein - Yang - Mills - Higgs (EYMH) model are shown to give rise to color cross-effects analogous to the magneto-electricity in the Maxwell theory. In order to illustrate the significance of these color cross-effects, we reconstruct the effective (associated, color and color-acoustic) metrics for the pp-wave non-minimal seven-parameter EYMH model with parallel gauge and scalar background fields. Then these metrics are used as hints for obtaining explicit exact solutions of the non-minimally extended Yang-Mills and Higgs equations for the test fields propagating in the vacuum interacting with curvature. The influence of the non-minimal coupling on the test particle motion is interpreted in terms of the so-called trapped surfaces, introduced in the Analog Gravity theory.

Ray optics in the field of non-minimal Dirac monopole

Based on the analogy with non-minimal SU(2) symmetric Wu-Yang monopole with regular metric, the solution describing a non-minimal U(1) symmetric Dirac monopole is obtained. In order to take into account the curvature coupling of gravitational and electromagnetic fields, we reconstruct the effective metrics of two types: the so-called associated and optical metrics. The optical metrics display explicitly that the effect of birefringence induced by curvature takes place in the vicinity of the non-minimal Dirac monopole; these optical metrics are studied analytically and numerically.

Non-minimal Wu-Yang wormhole

We discuss exact solutions of three-parameter non-minimal Einstein-Yang-Mills model, which describe the wormholes of a new type. These wormholes are considered to be supported by SU(2)-symmetric Yang-Mills field, non-minimally coupled to gravity, the Wu-Yang ansatz for the gauge field being used. We distinguish between regular solutions, describing traversable non-minimal Wu-Yang wormholes, and black wormholes possessing one or two event horizons. The relation between the asymptotic mass of the regular traversable Wu-Yang wormhole and its throat radius is analysed.

Curvature coupling in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory and non-minimal self-duality

A self-consistent non-minimal non-Abelian Einstein-Yang-Mills model, containing three phenomenological coupling constants, is formulated. The ansatz of a vanishing Yang-Mills induction is considered as a particular case of the self-duality requirement for the gauge field. Such an ansatz is shown to allow obtaining an exact solution of the self-consistent set of equations when the space-time has a constant curvature. An example describing a pure magnetic gauge field in the de Sitter cosmological model is discussed in detail.
