Long Term Dynamics and Stability Studies for the High-energy Electron Cooler

The Ring Electron Cooler (REC) is being developed for the Electron-Ion Collider to provide cooling at the top proton energy of 275GeV to reduce emittance growth from intra-beam scattering (IBS) and other effects. Cooling electrons circulate in a 150 MeV storage ring equipped with strong damping wigglers. While these wigglers counteract emittance degradation driven by intra-beam scattering and proton-electron beam-beam scattering, they introduce significant nonlinear dynamics which can affect electron beam lifetime. In this paper we present the nonlinear optimization of the REC, including optimized focusing wiggler fields, chromatic correction, misalignments and orbit correction and space-charge studies. A novel sextupole-like wiggler field configuration is shown to substantially reduce chromatic aberrations compared with quadrupole-like focusing. Transverse and longitudinal dynamic apertures exceeding 5$\sigma$ are achieved in the presence of realistic alignment and BPM errors. Space-charge simulations for a Gaussian beam using the Bassetti-Erskine model show manageable tune spread and limited equilibrium emittance growth. These results demonstrate the feasibility of REC operation under the required cooling parameters.

Useful formulas for non-magnetized electron cooling

Recent success of Low Energy RHIC Electron Cooler (LEReC) opened a road for development of high energy electron coolers based on non-magnetized electron bunches accelerated by RF cavities. Electrons in such coolers can have velocity distribution with various unequal horizontal, vertical and longitudinal velocity spreads. In this paper we revisit a formula of friction force in non-magnetized cooling and derive a number of useful expressions for different limiting cases.

Effect of coherent excitation in coherent electron cooler

We consider the possibility of coherent excitation (CE) of cooled particles in the coherent electron coolers (CeC). We consider the current CeC scheme for the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) and derive the tolerances to a systematic error in longitudinal alignment of the electron and the proton bunches in the EIC cooler set by the CE effect.

Low-energy run of Fermilab Electron Cooler's beam generation system

As a part of a feasibility study of using the Fermilab Electron Cooler for a low-energy Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) run at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), the cooler operation at 1.6 MeV electron beam energy was tested in a short beam line configuration. The main result of the study is that the cooler beam generation system is suitable for BNL needs. In a striking difference with running 4.3 MeV beam, no unprovoked beam recirculation interruptions were observed.

High-energy high-luminosity electron-ion collider eRHIC

In this paper, we describe a future electron-ion collider (EIC), based on the existing Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) hadron facility, with two intersecting superconducting rings, each 3.8 km in circumference. A new ERL accelerator, which provide 5-30 GeV electron beam, will ensure 10^33 to 10^34 cm^-2 s^-1 level luminosity.
