Stabilization of magnetic skyrmions by RKKY interactions

We study the stabilization of an isolated magnetic skyrmion in a magnetic monolayer on a nonmagnetic conducting substrate via the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction. Two different types of the substrate are considered, usual normal metal and single-layer graphene. While the full stability analysis for skyrmions in the presence of the RKKY coupling requires a separate effort that is outside the scope of this work, we are able to study the radial stability (stability of a skyrmion against collapse) using variational energy estimates obtained within first-order perturbation theory, with the unperturbed Hamiltonian describing the isotropic Heisenberg magnet, and the two perturbations being the RKKY exchange and the easy-axis anisotropy. We show that a proper treatment of the long-range nature of the RKKY interaction leads to a qualitatively different stabilization scenario compared to previous studies, where solitons were stabilized by the frustrated exchange coupling (leading to terms with the fourth power of the magnetization gradients) or by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (described by terms linear in the magnetization gradients). In the case of a metallic substrate, the skyrmion stabilization is possible under restrictive conditions on the Fermi surface parameters, while in the case of a graphene substrate the stabilization is naturally achieved in several geometries with a lattice-matching of graphene and magnetic layer.

Effective field theory for S=1 quantum nematic

For S=1 system with general isotropic nearest-neighbor exchange, we derive the low-energy description of the spin nematic phase in terms of the RP^{2} nonlinear sigma-model. In one dimension, quantum fluctuations destroy long-range nematic (quadrupolar) ordering, leading to the formation of a gapped spin liquid state being an analog of the Haldane phase for a spin nematic. Nematic analog of the Belavin-Polyakov instanton with π_{2} topological charge 1/2 is constructed. In two dimensions the long-range order is destroyed by thermal fluctuations and at finite temperature the system is in a renormalized classical regime. Behavior in external magnetic field is discussed.

Quantum chiral phases in frustrated easy-plane spin chains

The phase diagram of antiferromagnetic spin-S chain with XY-type anisotropy and frustrating next-nearest-neighbor interaction is studied in the limit of large integer S with the help of a field-theoretical approach. It is shown that the existence of gapless and gapped chiral phases found in recent numerical studies [M.Kaburagi et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. vol.68, 3185 (1999), T.Hikihara et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. vol.69, 259 (2000)] is not specific for S=1, but is rather a generic large-S feature. Estimates for the corresponding transition boundaries are obtained, and a sketch of the typical phase diagram is presented. It is also shown that frustration stabilizes the Haldane phase against the variation of the anisotropy.

Magnetization plateaus in weakly coupled dimer spin system

I study a spin system consisting of strongly coupled dimers which are in turn weakly coupled in a plane by zigzag interactions. The model can be viewed as the strong-coupling limit of a two-dimensional zigzag chain structure typical, e.g., for the $(ac)$-planes of KCuCl_3. It is shown that the magnetization curve in this model has plateaus at 1/3 and 2/3 of the saturation magnetization, and an additional plateau at 1/2 can appear in a certain range of the model parameters; the critical fields are calculated perturbatively. It is argued that for the three-dimensional lattice structure of the KCuCl_3 family the plateaus at 1/4 and 3/4 of the saturation can be favored in a similar way, which might be relevant to the recent experiments on NH_4CuCl_3 by Shiramura et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 67}, 1548 (1998).

Models of impurities in valence bond spin chains and ladders

We present the class of models of a nonmagnetic impurity in S=1/2 generalized ladder with an AKLT-type valence bond ground state, and of a S=1/2 impurity in the S=1 AKLT chain. The ground state in presence of impurity can be found exactly. Recently studied phenomenon of local enhancement of antiferromagnetic correlations around the impurity is absent for this family of models.

Macroscopic quantum tunneling in magnetic nanostructures

Theoretical foundations of the problem of quantum spin tunneling in magnetic nanostructures are presented. Several model problems are considered in detail, including recent new results on tunneling in antiferromagnetic nanoparticles and topologically nontrivial magnetic structures in systems with reduced dimension.
