On finite dimensionality of homology of subalgebras of vector fields

We show that finite tensor products of modules of tensor fields are Noetherian modules over any graded Lie subalgebra of finite codimension in the Lie algebra of polynomial vector fields on $\mathbb{R}^n$. As a corollary, we prove the conjecture of I.\,M. Gelfand, announced at the ICM in Nice in 1970, on the finite-dimensionality of the continuous cohomology of graded Lie subalgebras of finite codimension in the Lie algebra of formal vector fields $W_n$.

Aperiodic points for outer billiards

Euclidean outer billiard on a regular polygon (that is not a triangle, square or a hexagon) has aperiodic points, i.e., points where all iterates of the outer billiard map are defined and yield pairwise distinct images. This result answers a question of R. Schwartz posed at ICM 2022.

An Indirect Method for Solving Combinatorial Problems

This article introduces a pedagogical method for {\it solving combinatorial problems} that frequently involve structures that are unfamiliar or less familiar. Indeed, an indirect method has been proposed in order to evade any possible questions that might obstruct our path to the correct answer and final solution. With this method, the desired configuration can be formulated. This method is effective for solving problems in Olympiads and mathematical competitions as well as for teaching combinations and counting science in the elementary school mathematics curriculum.

Representability of relatively free affine algebras over a Noetherian ring

Over the years questions have arisen about T-ideals of (noncommutative) polynomials. But when evaluating a noncentral polynomial in subalgebras of matrices, one often has little control in determining the specific evaluations of the polynomial. One way of overcoming this difficulty in characteristic 0, is to reduce to multilinear polynomials and utilizing the representation theory of the symmetric group. But this technique is unavailable in characteristic $p>0$. An alternative method, which succeeds, is the process of ``hiking'' a polynomial, in which one specializes its indeterminates in several stages, to obtain a polynomial that contains Capelli polynomials, in order to get control on its evaluations. This method was utilized on homogeneous polynomials in the proof of Specht's conjecture for affine algebras over fields of positive characteristic. In this paper we develop hiking further to nonhomogeneous polynomials, to apply to the representability question. Kemer proved in 1988 that every affine relatively free PI algebra over an infinite field, is representable. In 2010, the first author of this paper proved more generally that every affine relatively free PI algebra over any commutative Noetherian unital ring is representable. We present a different, complete, proof, based on hiking nonhomogeneous polynomials, over finite fields. We then obtain the full result over a Noetherian commutative ring, using Noetherian induction on T-ideals. The bulk of the proof is for the case of a base field of positive characteristic. Here, whereas the usage of hiking is more direct than in proving Specht's conjecture, one must consider nonhomogeneous polynomials when the base ring is finite, which entails certain difficulties to be overcome. In the appendix we show how hiking can be adapted to prove the involutory versions, as well as various graded and nonassociative theorems.

Dimension-free estimates on distances between subsets of volume $\varepsilon$ inside a unit-volume body

Average distance between two points in a unit-volume body $K \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ tends to infinity as $n \to \infty$. However, for two small subsets of volume $\varepsilon > 0$ the situation is different. For unit-volume cubes and euclidean balls the largest distance is of order $\sqrt{-\ln \varepsilon}$, for simplexes and hyperoctahedrons $-$ of order $-\ln \varepsilon$, for $\ell_p$ balls with $p \in [1;2]$ $-$ of order $(-\ln \varepsilon)^{\frac{1}{p}}$. These estimates are not dependent on the dimensionality $n$. The goal of the paper is to study this phenomenon. Isoperimetric inequalities will play a key role in our approach.

On the Distribution function of area and perimeter for planar poisson line process

The challenges of examining random partitions of space are a significant class of problems in the theory of geometric transformations. Richard Miles calculated moments of areas and perimeters of any order (including expectation) of the random division of space in 1972. In the paper we calculate whole distribution function of random divisions of plane by poisson line process. The idea is to interpret a random polygon as the evolution of a segment along a moving straight line. In the plane example, the issue connected with an infinite number of parameters is overcome by considering a secant line. We shall take into account the following tasks: {\textbf 1.} On the plane, a random set of straight lines is provided, all shifts are equally likely, and the distribution law is of the form $F(φ).$ What is the area distribution of the partition's components? {\textbf 2.} On the plane, a random set of points is marked. Each point $A$ has an associated area of attraction, which is the collection of points in the plane to which the point $A$ is the nearest of the designated ones. In the first problem, the density of moved sections adjacent to the line allows for the expression of the balancing ratio in kinetic form. Similarly, you can write the perimeters kinetic equations. We will demonstrate how to reduce these equations to the Riccati equation using the Laplace transformation in this paper.

The images of multilinear and semihomogeneous polynomials on the algebra of octonions

The generalized L'vov-Kaplansky conjecture states that for any finite-dimensional simple algebra $A$ the image of a multilinear polynomial on $A$ is a vector space. In this paper we prove it for the algebra of octonions $\mathbb{O}$ over a field satisfying certain specified conditions (in particular, we prove it for quadratically closed field and for field $\mathbb{R}$). In fact, we prove that the image set must be either $\{0\}$, $F$, the space of pure octonions $V$, or $\mathbb{O}$. We discuss possible evaluations of semihomogeneous polynomials on $\mathbb{O}$ and of arbitrary polynomials on the corresponding Malcev algebra.

Two-dimensional self-interlocking structures in three-space

It is well known that if there exists a finite set of convex bodies on the plane with non-overlapping interiors, then there is at least one "extremal" one among them, i.e., some one which can be continuously "taken away to the infinity" (outside a large ball containing all other bodies). In 3-space a phenomenon of self-interlocking structures takes place. A self-interlocking structure is such a set of three-dimensional convex bodies with non-overlapping interiors that any infinitesimal move of any of them is possible only as a part of the move of all bodies as a solid body. Previously known self-interlocking structures are based on configurations of cut cubes, tetrahedra, and octahedra. In the present paper we discover a principally new phenomenon of 2-dimensional self-interlocking structures: a family of 2-dimensional polygons in 3-space where no infinitesimal move of any piece is possible. (Infinitely thin) tiles are used to create {\em decahedra}, which, in turn, used to create columns, which turn out to be stable when we fix some two extreme tiles. Seemingly, our work is the first appearance of the structure which is stable if we fix just two tiles (and not all but one). Two-dimensional self-interlocking structures naturally lead to three-dimensional structures possessing the same properties.

Independence of the B-KK Isomorphism of Infinite Prime

We investigate a certain class of Ind-scheme morphisms corresponding to homomorphisms between the automorphism group of the $n$-th complex Weyl algebra and the group of Poisson structure-preserving automorphisms of the commutative complex polynomial algebra in $2n$ variables. A conjecture of Kanel-Belov and Kontsevich, whose proof we have recently obtained, states that these automorphism groups are canonically isomorphic in characteristic zero, with the mapping discussed here being the candidate for the isomorphism. The main objective of the present paper is to establish the independence of the said mapping of the choice of infinite prime - that is, the class $[p]$ of prime number sequences modulo fixed non-principal ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}$ on the index set of positive integers. To that end, we introduce the augmented and skew augmented versions of algebras in question and study the augmented Ind-morphism between the normalized automorphism Ind-schemes in the context of tame automorphism approximation. In order to correctly implement approximation in our proof, we study singularities of curves in skew augmented automorphism Ind-schemes and their images under Ind-scheme morphisms. Apart from that, we study the augmented version of the independence conjecture.

Augmented Polynomial Symplectomorphisms and Quantization

The objective of this paper is the proof of a conjecture of Kontsevich on the isomorphism between groups of polynomial symplectomorphisms and automorphisms of the corresponding Weyl algebra in characteristic zero. The proof is based on the study of topological properties of automorphism $\Ind$-varieties of the so-called augmented and skew augmented versions of Poisson and Weyl algebras. Approximation by tame automorphisms as well as a certain singularity analysis procedure is utilized in the construction of the lifting of augmented polynomial symplectomorphisms, after which specialization of the augmentation parameter is performed in order to obtain the main result.

Nonstandard analysis, deformation quantization and some logical aspects of (non)commutative algebraic geometry

This paper surveys results related to well-known works of B. Plotkin and V. Remeslennikov on the edge of algebra, logic and geometry. We start from a brief review of the paper and motivations. The first sections deal with model theory. In Section 2.1 we describe the geometric equivalence, the elementary equivalence, and the isotypicity of algebras. We look at these notions from the positions of universal algebraic geometry and make emphasis on the cases of the first order rigidity. In this setting Plotkin's problem on the structure of automorphisms of (auto)endomorphisms of free objects, and auto-equivalence of categories is pretty natural and important. Section 2.2 is dedicated to particular cases of Plotkin's problem. Section 2.3 is devoted to Plotkin's problem for automorphisms of the group of polynomial symplectomorphisms. This setting has applications to mathematical physics through the use of model theory (non-standard analysis) in the studying of homomorphisms between groups of symplectomorphisms and automorphisms of the Weyl algebra. The last two sections deal with algorithmic problems for noncommutative and commutative algebraic geometry. Section 3.1 is devoted to the Gröbner basis in non-commutative situation. Despite the existence of an algorithm for checking equalities, the zero divisors and nilpotency problems are algorithmically unsolvable. Section 3.2 is connected with the problem of embedding of algebraic varieties; a sketch of the proof of its algorithmic undecidability over a field of characteristic zero is given.

Evaluations of Noncommutative Polynomials on Algebras: Methods and Problems, and the L'vov-Kaplansky Conjecture

Let $p$ be a polynomial in several non-commuting variables with coefficients in a field $K$ of arbitrary characteristic. It has been conjectured that for any $n$, for $p$ multilinear, the image of $p$ evaluated on the set $M_n(K)$ of $n$ by $n$ matrices is either zero, or the set of scalar matrices, or the set ${\rm sl}_n(K)$ of matrices of trace 0, or all of $M_n(K)$. This expository paper describes research on this problem and related areas. We discuss the solution of this conjecture for $n=2$ in Section 2, some decisive results for $n=3$ in Section 3, and partial information for $n\geq 3$ in Section 4, also for non-multilinear polynomials. In addition we consider the case of $K$ not algebraically closed, and polynomials evaluated on other finite dimensional simple algebras (in particular the algebra of the quaternions). This review recollects results and technical material of our previous papers, as well as new results of other researches, and applies them in a new context. This article also explains the role of the Deligne trick, which is related to some nonassociative cases in new situations, underlying our earlier, more straightforward approach. We pose some problems for future generalizations and point out possible generalizations in the present state of art, and in the other hand providing counterexamples showing the boundaries of generalizations.

A short proof that the free associative algebra is Hopfian

A short proof is given of the fact that various classes of algebras including the free associative algebra are Hopfian, i.e., every epimorphism is an automorphism. This further simplifies the Dicks-Lewin solution of the Jacobian conjecture for the free associative algebra.

Multi-Secant Lemma

We present a new generalization of the classical trisecant lemma. Our approach is quite different from previous generalizations. Let $X$ be an equidimensional projective variety of dimension $d$. For a given $k \leq d + 1$, we are interested in the study of the variety of $k$-secants. The classical trisecant lemma just considers the case where $k = 3$ while elsewhere the case $k = d + 2$ is considered. Secants of order from $4$ to $d + 1$ provide service for our main result. In this paper, we prove that if the variety of $k$-secants ($k \leq d + 1$) satisfies the three following conditions: (i) trough every point in $X$, passes at least one $k$-secant, (ii) the variety of $k$-secant satisfies a strong connectivity property that we defined in the sequel, (iii) every $k$-secant is also a ($k+1$)-secant, then the variety $X$ can be embedded into $P^{d+1}$. The new assumption, introduced here, that we called strong connectivity is essential because a naive generalization that does not incorporate this assumption fails as we show in some example. The paper concludes with some conjectures concerning the essence of the strong connectivity assumption.

Automorphisms of Weyl Algebra and a Conjecture of Kontsevich

We outline the proof of a conjecture of Kontsevich on the isomorphism between the group of polynomial symplectomorphisms in $2n$ variables and the group of automorphisms of the $n$-th Weyl algebra over complex numbers. Our proof uses lifting of polynomial symplectomorphisms to Weyl algebra automorphisms by means of approximation by tame symplectomorphisms and gauging of the lifted morphism. Approximation by tame symplectomorphisms is the symplectic version of the well-known theorem of D. Anick and is a result of our prior work.

Lifting of Polynomial Symplectomorphisms and Deformation Quantization

We study the problem of lifting of polynomial symplectomorphisms in characteristic zero to automorphisms of the Weyl algebra by means of approximation by tame automorphisms. We utilize -- and reprove -- D. Anick's fundamental result on approximation of polynomial automorphisms, adapt it to the case of symplectomorphisms, and formulate the lifting problem. The lifting problem has its origins in the context of deformation quantization of the affine space and is closely related to several major open problems in algebraic geometry and ring theory.
