Dust and Ionized Gas Association in E/S0 Galaxies with Dust Lanes: Clues to their Origin

We present results from an on-going programme to study the dust and ionized gas in E/S0 galaxies with dust lanes. Our data, together with results from previous studies of E/S0 galaxies, are used to demonstrate the tight relationship between these two components. This relationship is discussed in light of our current understanding of the nature and origin of the interstellar medium (ISM), and in particular in the context of the interplay between the different multi-temperature components. We show that focusing on dust obscured regions as tracers of the ISM, and on their properties, serves as independent evidence for the external origin of the dust and ionized gas.

The faint outer regions of the Pegasus Dwarf Irregular galaxy: a much larger and undisturbed galaxy

We investigate the spatial extent and structure of the Pegasus dwarf irregular galaxy using deep, wide-field, multicolour CCD photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and new deep HI observations. We study an area of ~0.6 square degrees centred on the Pegasus dwarf that was imaged by SDSS. Using effective filtering in colour-magnitude space we reduce the contamination by foreground Galactic field stars and increase significantly the contrast in the outer regions of the Pegasus dwarf. Our extended surface photometry, reaches down to a surface brightness magnitude mu_r~32 mag/sq.arcsec. It reveals a stellar body with a diameter of ~8 kpc that follows a Sersic surface brightness distribution law, which is composed of a significantly older stellar population than that observed in the ~2 kpc main body. The galaxy is at least five times more extended than listed in NED. The faint extensions of the galaxy are not equally distributed around its circumference; the north-west end is more jagged than the south-east end. We also identified a number of stellar concentrations, possibly stellar associations, arranged in a ring around the main luminous body. New HI observations were collected at the Arecibo Observatory as part of the ALFALFA survey. They reveal an HI distribution somewhat elongated in RA and about 0.3 deg. wide, with the region of highest column density coincident with the luminous galaxy. The HI rotation curve shows a solid-body rotation behaviour, with opposite ends differing by 15 km/s. There is a stream to lower velocities about 5 arcmin from the centre of the galaxy. We were able to measure ugriz colours in a number of apertures using the SDSS data and compared these with predictions of evolutionary synthesis models. (abridged)

HS 0837+4717 -- a metal-deficient blue compact galaxy with large nitrogen excess

(Abridged) We present the results of high S/N long-slit spectroscopy with the Multiple Mirror and the SAO 6-m telescopes, optical imaging with the Wise 1-m telescope and HI observations with the Nancay Radio Telescope of the very metal-deficient (12+log(O/H)=7.64) luminous (M_B=-18.1) blue compact galaxy (BCG) HS 0837+4717. The blue bump near lambda4650, characteristic of WR stars is detected in the central supergiant HII region, as well as the barely seen red bump at lambda5808. The derived number of WR stars in the region of the current starburst is ~1000. Evidence for fast motions in this region is also seen as broad, low-contrast components in the Ha, Hb and strong [OIII] lines. While the extinction of the narrow emission lines from the supergiant HII region is low, the very large Balmer decrement of the broad components suggests that the part of current starburst is highly obscured by dust. Abundance ratios X/O for X=Ne, Ar, S, Fe and Cl in the supergiant HII region are in good agreement with the mean values of other BCGs. Nitrogen, however, is overabundant by a factor of ~6. This implies an unusually efficient N enrichment in HS 0837+4717, and probably, a non-typical evolution scenario. The Ha-line Position--Velocity diagrams for directions approximately along the major and minor axes reveal disturbed motions of the ionized gas. The SW part of the major axis P--V diagram looks like a rotation curve, with V_rot ~50--70 km/s at r=4.3 kpc. Its NE part displays, however, strong deviations, indicating either counter-rotation, or strong outflow/supershell. The overall BCG morphology is highly disturbed. With a "double-nucleus" structure, disturbed velocities of ionized gas, and the very high power of the starburst this suggests a possible explanation of the object as a recent merger.

The KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey. III. [O III]-selected Survey List

The KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS) is an objective-prism survey for extragalactic emission-line objects. It combines many of the features of previous slitless spectroscopic surveys with the advantages of modern CCD detectors, and is the first purely digital objective-prism survey for emission-line galaxies. Here we present the first list of emission-line galaxy candidates selected from our blue spectral data, which cover the wavelength range 4800 -- 5500 A. In most cases, the detected emission line is [O III]5007. The current survey list covers a one-degree-wide strip located at Dec = 29 deg 30' (B1950.0) and spanning the right ascension range 8h 30m to 17h 0m. An area of 116.6 deg^2 is covered. A total of 223 candidate emission-line objects have been selected for inclusion in the survey list (1.91 deg^-2). We tabulate accurate coordinates and photometry for each source, as well as estimates of the redshift, emission-line flux, and equivalent width based on measurements of the digital objective-prism spectra. The median apparent magnitude of the sample is B = 18.2, and galaxies with redshifts approaching z = 0.1 are detected. The properties of the KISS emission-line galaxies are examined using the available observational data, and compared to previous surveys carried out with photographic plates as well as with the H-alpha-selected portion of KISS.
