Validation of moment tensor potentials for fcc and bcc metals using EXAFS spectra

Machine-learning potentials for materials, namely the moment tensor potentials (MTPs), were validated using experimental EXAFS spectra for the first time. The MTPs for four metals (bcc W and Mo, fcc Cu and Ni) were obtained by the active learning algorithm of fitting to the results of the calculations using density functional theory (DFT). The MTP accuracy was assessed by comparing metal K-edge EXAFS spectra obtained experimentally and computed from the results of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The sensitivity of the method to various aspects of the MD and DFT models was demonstrated using Ni as an example. Good agreement was found for W, Mo and Cu using the recommended PAW pseudopotentials, whereas a more accurate pseudopotential with 18 valence electrons was required for Ni to achieve a similar agreement. The use of EXAFS spectra allows one to estimate the MTP ability in reproducing both average and dynamic atomic structures.

The influence of Zn$^{2+}$ ions on the local structure and thermochromic properties of Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$MoO$_4$ solid solutions

The influence of zinc ions on the thermochromic properties of polycrystalline Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$MoO$_4$ ($x$=0.10, 0.50, 0.90) solid solutions was studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Cu, Zn and Mo K-edges. Detailed structural information on the local environment of metal ions was obtained from the simultaneous analysis of EXAFS spectra measured at three metal absorption edges using the reverse Monte Carlo method. Thermochromic phase transition with the hysteretic behaviour between $α$ and $γ$ phases was observed in Cu$_{0.90}$Zn$_{0.10}$MoO$_4$ solid solution. It was found that the local environment of molybdenum ions is most susceptible to the substitution of copper for zinc and, upon cooling, transforms from tetrahedral MoO$_4$ to distorted octahedral MoO$_6$.

Topological analysis of chemical bonding in the layered FePSe3 upon pressure-induced phase transitions

Two pressure-induced phase transitions have been theoretically studied in the layered iron phosphorus triselenide (FePSe3). Topological analysis of chemical bonding in FePSe3 has been performed based on the results of first-principles calculations within the periodic linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) method with hybrid Hartree-Fock-DFT B3LYP functional. The first transition at about 6 GPa is accompanied by the symmetry change from R-3 to C2/m, whereas the semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) occurs at about 13 GPa leading to the symmetry change from C2/m to P-31m. We found that the collapse of the band gap at about 13 GPa occurs due to changes in the electronic structure of FePSe3 induced by relative displacements of phosphorus or selenium atoms along the c-axis direction under pressure. The results of the topological analysis of the electron density and its Laplacian demonstrate that the pressure changes not only the interatomic distances but also the bond nature between the intralayer and interlayer phosphorus atoms. The interlayer P-P interactions are absent in two non-metallic FePSe3 phases while after SMT the intralayer P-P interactions weaken and the interlayer P-P interactions appear.

Advanced approach to the local structure reconstruction and theory validation on the example of the W L$_3$-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure of tungsten

Atomistic simulations of the experimental W L$_3$-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of bcc tungsten at T = 300 K were performed using classical molecular dynamics (MD) and reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) methods. The MD-EXAFS method based on the results of MD simulations allowed us to access the structural information, encoded in EXAFS, beyond the first coordination shell and to validate the accuracy of two interaction potential models - the embedded atom model potential and the second nearest-neighbor modified embedded atom method potential. The RMC-EXAFS method was used for more elaborate analysis of the EXAFS data giving access to thermal disorder effects. The results of both methods suggest that the correlation in atomic motion in bcc tungsten becomes negligible above 8 Å. This fact allowed us to use the EXAFS data to determine not only mean-square relative displacements of atomic W-W pair motion but also mean-square displacements of individual tungsten atoms, which are usually accessible from diffraction data only.

Including atomic vibrations in XANES calculations: polarization-dependent damping of the fine structure at the Cu K edge of (creat)$_{2}$CuCl$_{4}$

Atomic vibrations are usually not taken into account when analyzing x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra. One of the reasons is that including the vibrations in a formally exact way is quite complicated while the effect of vibrations is supposed to be small in the XANES region. By analyzing polarized Cu K edge x-ray absorption spectra of creatinium tetrachlorocuprate [(creat)$_{2}$CuCl$_{4}$], we demonstrate that a technically simple method, consisting in calculating the XANES via the same formula as for static systems but with a modified free-electron propagator which accounts for fluctuations of interatomic distances, may substantially help in understanding XANES of some layered systems. In particular we show that the difference in the damping of the x-ray absorption fine structure oscillations for different polarisations of the incoming x-rays cannot be reproduced by calculations which rely on a static lattice but it can be described if atomic vibrations are accounted for in such a way that individual creatinium and CuCl$_{4}$ molecular blocks are treated as semi-rigid entities while the mutual positions of these blocks are subject to large mean relative displacements.

Quantum chemistry studies of the O K-edge X-ray absorption in WO3 and AWO3

In this work we present an interpretation of experimental O K-edge x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) in perovskite-type WO3 and AWO3 compounds (A = H and Na) using three different first principles approaches: (i) full-multiple-scattering (FMS) formalism (the real-space FEFF code), (ii) hybrid density functional theory (DFT) method with partial incorporation of exact Hartree-Fock exchange using formalism of the linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) as implemented in the CRYSTAL code; (iii) plane-wave DFT method using formalism of the projector-augmented waves (PAW) as implemented in the VASP code.
