On realisations of the Steenrod algebras

The Steenrod algebra can not be realised as an enveloping of any Lie superalgebra. We list several problems that suggest a need to modify the definition of the enveloping algebra, for example, to get rid of certain strange deformations which we qualify as an artefact of the inadequate definition of the enveloping algebra in positive characteristic. P. Deligne appended our paper with his comments, hints and open problems.

The Dzhumadildaev brackets: a hidden supersymmetry of commutators and the Amitsur-Levitzki--type identities

The Amitsur--Levitzki identity for matrices was generalized in several directions: by Kostant for simple finite-dimensional Lie algebras, by Kirillov (later joined by Kontsevich, Molev, Ovsienko, and Udalova) for simple vectorial Lie algebras with polynomial coefficients, and by Gie, Pinczon, and Ushirobira for the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|n)$. Dzhumadildaev switched the focus of attention in these results by considering the algebra formed by antisymmetrizors and discovered a hidden supersymmetry of commutators. We overview these results and their possible generalizations (open problems).

Nondegenerate invariant symmetric bilinear forms on simple Lie superalgebras in characteristic 2

As is well-known, the dimension of the space spanned by the non-degenerate invariant symmetric bilinear forms (NISes) on any simple finite-dimensional Lie algebra or Lie superalgebra is equal to at most 1 if the characteristic of the algebraically closed ground field is not 2. We prove that in characteristic 2, the superdimension of the space spanned by NISes can be equal to 0, or 1, or $0|1$, or $1|1$; it is equal to $1|1$ if and only if the Lie superalgebra is a queerification (defined in arXiv:1407.1695) of a simple classically restricted Lie algebra with a NIS (for examples, mainly in characteristic distinct from 2, see arXiv:1806.05505). We give examples of NISes on deformations (with both even and odd parameters) of several simple finite-dimensional Lie superalgebras in characteristic 2. We also recall examples of multiple NISes on simple Lie algebras over non-closed fields.

Restricted simple Lie (super)algebras in characteristic $3$

We give explicit formulas proving restrictedness of the following Lie (super)algebras: known exceptional simple vectorial Lie (super)algebras in characteristic 3, deformed Lie (super)algebras with indecomposable Cartan matrix, and (under certain conditions) their simple subquotients over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 3, as well as one type of the deformed divergence-free Lie superalgebras with any number of indeterminates in any characteristic.

On Gradings Modulo 2 of Simple Lie Algebras in Characteristic 2

The ground field in the text is of characteristic 2. The classification of modulo 2 gradings of simple Lie algebras is vital for the classification of simple finite-dimensional Lie superalgebras: with each grading, a simple Lie superalgebra is associated, see arXiv:1407.1695. No classification of gradings was known for any type of simple Lie algebras, bar restricted Jacobson-Witt algebras (i.e., the first derived of the Lie algebras of vector fields with truncated polynomials as coefficients) on not less than 3 indeterminates. Here we completely describe gradings modulo 2 for several series of Lie algebras and their simple relatives: of special linear series, its projectivizations, and projectivizations of the derived Lie algebras of two inequivalent orthogonal series (except for ${\mathfrak{o}}_\Pi(8)$). The classification of gradings is new, but all of the corresponding superizations are known. For the simple derived Zassenhaus algebras of height $n>1$, there is an $(n-2)$-parametric family of modulo 2 gradings; all but one of the corresponding simple Lie superalgebras are new. Our classification also proves non-triviality of a deformation of a simple $3|2$-dimensional Lie superalgebra (new result).

Simple Vectorial Lie Algebras in Characteristic 2 and their Superizations

We overview the classifications of simple finite-dimensional modular Lie algebras. In characteristic 2, their list is wider than that in other characteristics; e.g., it contains desuperizations of modular analogs of complex simple vectorial Lie superalgebras. We consider odd parameters of deformations. For all 15 Weisfeiler gradings of the 5 exceptional families, and one Weisfeiler grading for each of 2 serial simple complex Lie superalgebras (with 2 exceptional subseries), we describe their characteristic-2 analogs - new simple Lie algebras. Descriptions of several of these analogs, and of their desuperizations, are far from obvious. One of the exceptional simple vectorial Lie algebras is a previously unknown deform (the result of a deformation) of the characteristic-2 version of the Lie algebra of divergence-free vector fields; this is a new simple Lie algebra with no analogs in characteristics distinct from 2. In characteristic 2, every simple Lie superalgebra can be obtained from a simple Lie algebra by one of the two methods described in arXiv:1407.1695. Most of the simple Lie superalgebras thus obtained from simple Lie algebras we describe here are new.

Classification of simple Lie superalgebras in characteristic $2$

All results concern characteristic 2. Two procedures that to every simple Lie algebra assign simple Lie superalgebras, most of the latter new, are offered. We prove that every simple finite-dimensional Lie superalgebra is obtained as the result of one of these procedures, so we classified all simple finite-dimensional Lie superalgebras modulo non-existing at the moment classification of simple finite-dimensional Lie algebras. This result concerns Lie superalgebras considered naively, as vector spaces. To obtain classification of simple Lie superalgebras in the category of supervarieties, one should list the non-isomorphic deforms (results of deformations) with odd parameter. This problem is open bar several examples described in arXiv~0807.3054. For Lie algebras, in addition to the known ---"classical" --- restrictedness, we introduce a (2,4)-structure on the two non-alternating series: orthogonal and of Hamiltonian vector fields. For Lie superalgebras, the classical restrictedness of Lie algebras has two analogs: $(2|4)$- and $(2|2)$-structures, one more analog --- a $(2,4)|4$-structure on Lie superalgebras is the analog of (2,4)-structure on Lie algebras.

Shapovalov determinant for loop superalgebras

Let a given finite dimensional simple Lie superalgebra g possess an even invariant non-degenerate supersymmetric bilinear form. We show how to recover the quadratic Casimir element for the Kac-Moody superalgebra related to the loop superalgebra with values in g from the quadratic Casimir element for g. Our main tool here is an explicit Wick normal form of the even quadratic Casimir operator for the Kac--Moody superalgebra associated with g; this Wick normal form is of independent interest. If g possesses an odd invariant supersymmetric bilinear form we compute the cubic Casimir element. In addition to the cases of Lie superalgebras g(A) with Cartan matrix A for which the answer was known, we consider the Poisson Lie superalgebra poi(0|n) and the related Kac--Moody superalgebra.

Derivations and Central Extensions of Symmetric Modular Lie Algebras and Superalgebras

Over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic, for simple Lie (super)algebras, and certain Lie (super)algebras close to simple ones, with symmetric root systems (such that for each root, there is minus it of the same multiplicity) and of ranks less than or equal to 8 - most needed in an approach to the classification of simple vectorial Lie superalgebras (i.e., Lie superalgebras realized by means of vector fields on a supermanifold), - we list the outer derivations and nontrivial central extensions. When the conjectural answer is clear for the infinite series, it is given for any rank. We also list the outer derivations and nontrivial central extensions of one series of non-symmetric (except when considered in characteristic 2), namely periplectic, Lie superalgebras - the one that preserves the nondegenerate symmetric odd bilinear form, and of the Lie algebras obtained from them by desuperization. We also list the outer derivations and nontrivial central extensions of an analog of the rank 2 exceptional Lie algebra discovered by Shen Guangyu. Several results indigenous to positive characteristic are of particular interest being unlike known theorems for characteristic 0, some results are, moreover, counterintuitive.

Simple prolongs of the non-positive parts of graded Lie algebras with Cartan matrix in characteristic 2

Over an algebraically closed fields, an alternative to the method due to Kostrikin and Shafarevich was recently suggested. It produces all known simple finite dimensional Lie algebras in characteristic p>2. For p=2, we investigate one of the steps of this method, interpret several other simple Lie algebras, previously known only as sums of their components, as Lie algebras of vector fields. One new series of exceptional simple Lie algebras is discovered, together with its "hidden supersymmetries". In characteristic 2, certain simple Lie algebras are "desuperizations" of simple Lie superalgebras. Several simple Lie algebras we describe as results of generalized Cartan prolongation of the non-positive parts, relative a simplest (by declaring degree of just one pair of root vectors corresponding to opposite simple roots nonzero) grading by integers, of Lie algebras with Cartan matrix are "desuperizations" of characteristic 2 versions of complex simple exceptional vectorial Lie superalgebras. We list the Lie superalgebras (some of them new) obtained from the Lie algebras considered by declaring certain generators odd. One of the simple Lie algebras obtained is the prolong relative to a non-simplest grading, so the classification to be obtained might be more involved than we previously thought.

Lie algebra deformations in characteristic 2

Of four types of Kaplansky algebras, type-2 and type-4 algebras have previously unobserved $\mathbb{Z}/2$-gradings: nonlinear in roots. A method assigning a simple Lie superalgebra to every $\mathbb{Z}/2$-graded simple Lie algebra in characteristic 2 is illustrated by seven new series. Type-2 algebras and one of the two type-4 algebras are demystified as nontrivial deforms (the results of deformations) of the alternate Hamiltonian algebras. The type-1 Kaplansky algebra is recognized as the derived of the nonalternate version of the Hamiltonian Lie algebra, the one that preserves a tensorial 2-form, not an exterior one. Deforms corresponding to nontrivial cohomology classes can be isomorphic to the initial algebra, e.g., we confirm Grishkov's implicit claim and explicitly describe the Jurman algebra as such a "semitrivial" deform of the derived of the alternate Hamiltonian Lie algebra. This paper helps to sharpen the formulation of a conjecture describing all simple finite-dimensional Lie algebras over any algebraically closed field of nonzero characteristic and supports a conjecture of Dzhumadildaev and Kostrikin stating that all simple finite-dimensional modular Lie algebras are either of "standard" type or deforms thereof. In characteristic 2, we give sufficient conditions for the known deformations to be semitrivial.

Divided power (co)homology. Presentations of simple finite dimensional modular Lie superalgebras with Cartan matrix

For modular Lie superalgebras, new notions are introduced: Divided power homology and divided power cohomology. For illustration, we give presentations (in terms of analogs of Chevalley generators) of finite dimensional Lie (super)algebras with indecomposable Cartan matrix in characteristic 2 (and in other characteristics for completeness of the picture). We correct the currently available in the literature notions of Chevalley generators and Cartan matrix in the modular and super cases, and an auxiliary notion of the Dynkin diagram. In characteristic 2, the defining relations of simple classical Lie algebras of the A, D, E types are not only Serre ones; these non-Serre relations are same for Lie superalgebras with the same Cartan matrix and any distribution of parities of the generators. Presentations of simple orthogonal Lie algebras having no Cartan matrix are also given..

Deformations of the Lie algebra o(5) in characteristics 3 and 2

The finite dimensional simple modular Lie algebras with Cartan matrix cannot be deformed if the characteristic p of the ground field is equal to 0 or greater than 3. If p=3, the orthogonal Lie algebra o(5)is one of the two simple modular Lie algebras with Cartan matrix that have deformations (the Brown algebras br(2; a) are among these 10-dimensional deforms and hence are not counted separately); the 29-dimensional Brown algebra br(3) is the only other simple Lie algebra with Cartan matrix that has deformations. Kostrikin and Kuznetsov described the orbits (isomorphism classes) under the action of the group O(5) of automorphisms of o(5) on the space H^2(o(5);o(5)) and produced representatives of the isomorphism classes. Here we explicitly describe global deforms of o(5) and of the simple analog of this orthogonal Lie algebra in characteristic 2.

The classification of almost affine (hyperbolic) Lie superalgebras

We say that an indecomposable Cartan matrix A with entries in the ground field of characteristic 0 is almost affine if the Lie sub(super)algebra determined by it is not finite dimensional or affine but the Lie (super)algebra determined by any submatrix of A, obtained by striking out any row and any column intersecting on the main diagonal, is the sum of finite dimensional or affine Lie (super)algebras. A Lie (super)algebra with Cartan matrix is said to be almost affine if it is not finite dimensional or affine, and all of its Cartan matrices are almost affine. We list all almost affine Lie superalgebras over complex numbers correcting two earlier claims of classification and make available the list of almost affine Lie algebras obtained by Li Wang Lai.

Non-degenerate bilinear forms in characteristic 2, related contact forms, simple Lie algebras and superalgebras

Non-degenerate bilinear forms over fields of characteristic 2, in particular, non-symmetric ones, are classified with respect to various equivalences, and the Lie algebras preserving them are described. Although it is known that there are two series of distinct finite simple Chevalley groups preserving the non-degenerate symmetric bilinear forms on the space of even dimension, the description of simple Lie algebras related to the ones that preserve these forms is new. The classification of 1-forms is shown to be related to one of the considered equivalences of bilinear forms. A version of the above results for superspaces is also given.

Lie superalgebra structures in cohomology spaces of Lie algebras with coefficients in the adjoint representation

The space of Lie algebra cohomology is usually described by the dimensions of components of certain degree even for the adjoint module as coefficients when the spaces of cochains and cohomology can be endowed with a Lie superalgebra structure. Such a description is rather imprecise: these dimensions may coincide for cohomology spaces of distinct algebras. We explicitely describe the Lie superalgebras on the space of cohomology of the maximal nilpotent subalgebra of any simple finite dimensional Lie algebra. We briefly review related results by Grozman, Penkov and Serganova, Poletaeva, and Tolpygo. We cite a powerful Premet's theorem complementary to the Borel-Weil-Bott theorem. We mention relations with the Nijenhuis bracket and nonholonomic systems.
