Superconductivity and Charge Density Wave in a Quasi-One-Dimensional Spin Gap System

We consider a model of spin-gapped chains weakly coupled by Josephson and Coulomb interactions. Combining such non-perturbative methods as bosonization and Bethe ansatz to treat the intra-chain interactions with the Random Phase Approximation for the inter-chain couplings and the first corrections to this, we investigate the phase diagram of this model. The phase diagram shows both charge density wave ordering and superconductivity. These phases are seperated by a line of critical points which exhibits an approximate an SU(2) symmetry. We consider the effects of a magnetic field on the system. We apply the theory to the material Sr_2 Ca_12 Cu_24 O_41 and suggest further experiments.

Spectral function of a quarter-filled one-dimensional CDW insulator

We consider a one-dimensional charge density wave (CDW) insulator formed by Umklapp processes in a quarter-filled band. The spectrum of the model consists of gapless, uncharged excitations carrying spin $\pm 1/2$ (spinons) and gapped, spinless excitations carrying charge $\pm e/2$ (solitons and antisolitons). We calculate the low-energy behaviour of the single-electron Green's function at zero temperature. The spectral function exhibits a rather featureless scattering continuum of two solitons and many spinons. The theory predicts that the gap observed by Angle Resolved Photoemission (ARPES) is twice the activation gap in the dc conductivity. We comment on possible applications to ${\rm PrBa_2Cu_3O_7}$ and to the Bechgaard salts.

Weakly coupled one-dimensional Mott insulators

We consider a model of one-dimensional Mott insulators coupled by a weak interchain tunnelling $t_\perp$. We first determine the single-particle Green's function of a single chain by exact field-theoretical methods and then take the tunnelling into account by means of a Random Phase Approximation (RPA). In order to embed this approximation into a well-defined expansion with a small parameter, the Fourier transform $T_\perp(k)$ of the interchain coupling is assumed to have a small support in momentum space such that every integration over transverse wave vector yields a small factor $κ_0^2 \ll 1$. When \tp(0) exceeds a critical value, a small Fermi surface develops in the form of electron and hole pockets. We demonstrate that Luttinger's theorem holds both in the insulating and in the metallic phases. We find that the quasi-particle residue $Z$ increases very fast through the transition and quickly reaches a value of about $0.4-0.6$. The metallic state close to the transition retains many features of the one-dimensional system in the form of strong incoherent continua.

Finite-temperature dynamical magnetic susceptibility of quasi-one-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets

We study the dynamical response of frustrated, quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets at finite temperatures. We allow for the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We concentrate on a model of weakly coupled planes of anisotropic triangular lattices. Combining exact results for the dynamical response of one dimensional Heisenberg chains with a Random Phase Approximation (RPA) in the frustrated interchain couplings, we calculate the dynamical susceptibility in the disordered phase. We investigate the instability of the disordered phase to the formation of collective modes. We find a very weak instability to the formation of incommensurate magnetic order and determine the ordering temperature and wave vector. We also determine the effects of uniform magnetic fields on the ordering transition.

One-dimensional electron gas interacting with a Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain

We analyse a model of a one-dimensional electron gas interacting with an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain via the spin exchange interactions. Using a solution at a special limit, we characterize the gapless modes of the spin gap fixed point at weak coupling $ J_{K}\ll J_{H},E_{F} $. we show that the only gapless pairing mode with divergent susceptibility is a composite odd-parity odd-frequency singlet pairing order parameter, while the ordinary BCS even-parity singlet pairing mode is incoherent. For 2-leg ladder systems, we note that it is possible to have a range of doping where the chemical potential cuts only the anti-bonding band while the bonding band remains half-filled. We propose that, in such a state, the 2-leg ladder is effectively realizing the one-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model.

A Mechanism for Ferrimagnetism and Incommensurability in One-Dimensional Systems

A mechanism for ferrimagnetism in (1+1)-dimensions is discussed. The ferrimagnetism is cased by interactions described by operators with non-zero conformal spin. Such interactions appear in such problems as the problem of tunneling between Luttinger liquids and the problem of frustrated spin ladder. I present exact solutions for a representative class of models containing such interactions together with a simple mean field analysis. It is shown that the interactions (i) dynamically generate static oscillations with a wave vector dependent on the coupling constant, (ii) give rise to a finite magnetic moment at $T = 0$ accompanied by the soft mode with a non-relativistic ({\it ferromagnetic}) dispersion $E \sim k^2$, (iii) generate massive (roton) modes.

Dynamical Properties of one dimensional Mott Insulators

At low energies the charge sector of one dimensional Mott insulators can be described in terms of a quantum Sine-Gordon model. Using exact results derived from integrability it is possible to determine dynamical properties like the frequency dependent optical conductivity. We compare the exact results to perturbation theory and renormalisation group calculations. We also discuss the application of our results to experiments on quasi-1D organic conductors.

Scaling Exponents in the Incommensurate Phase of the Sine-Gordon and U(1) Thirring Models

In this paper we study the critical exponents of the quantum sine-Gordon and U(1) Thirring models in the incommensurate phase. This phase appears when the chemical potential $h$ exceeds a critical value and is characterized by a finite density of solitons. The low-energy sector of this phase is critical and is described by the Gaussian model (Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid) with the compactification radius dependent on the soliton density and the sine-Gordon model coupling constant $β$. For a fixed value of $β$, we find that the Luttinger parameter $K$ is equal to 1/2 at the commensurate-incommensurate transition point and approaches the asymptotic value $β^2/8π$ away from it. We describe a possible phase diagram of the model consisting of an array of weakly coupled chains. The possible phases are Fermi liquid, Spin Density Wave, Spin-Peierls and Wigner crystal.

Optical conductivity of one-dimensional Mott insulators

We calculate the optical conductivity of one-dimensional Mott insulators at low energies using a field theory description. The square root singularity at the optical gap, characteristic of band insulators, is generally absent and appears only at the Luther-Emery point. We also show that only few particle processes contribute significantly to the optical conductivity over a wide range of frequencies and that the bare perturbative regime is recovered only at very large energies. We discuss possible applications of our results to quasi one-dimensional organic conductors.

A Pseudogap in the Single-Particle Density of States of a Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid

We study a single-particle density of states (DOS) in a model of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid with small (large) values of the Luttinger parameter $K_\rc < 0.17$, ($K_\rc > 5.82$), in the charge sector. We explain that such values of $K_\rc$ may be achieved by electron-phonon interactions without generating the spin gap. We suggest that electron-phonon interactions can be partially incorporated into the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid scheme by introducing frequency dependent $K_\rc(ω)$. We demonstrate that when the low-frequency asymptotic value $K_\rc(0) < 0.17$ or $K_\rc(0) > 5.82$, the single-particle DOS has a pseudogap behavior in frequency where $ρ(ω)/ω$ vanishes at small frequencies. The DOS exhibits a peak the position of which scales as $[K(0) + K^{-1}(0)]ω_0/2$ where $ω_0$ is the characteristic phonon frequency.

Logarithmic Operators in the Theory of Plateau Transition

We show that $SL(2;C)/SU(2)$ model which had been recently proposed to describe the behaviour of the local densities of states at the plateau transition in Integer Quantum Hall effect, has logarithmic operators. They unusual properties are studied in this letter.

Exact Results for Thermodynamics of the Classical Field Theories: Sine- and Sinh-Gordon Models

Using the recently obtained exact results for the expectation values of operators in the sine- and sinh-Gordon models [A. B. Zamolodchikov and S. Lukyanov, Nucl. Phys. B{\bf 493}, 571 (1997), V. Fateev, S. Lukyanov, A. B. Zamolodchikov and Al. B. Zamolodchikov, Phys. Lett. B{\bf 406}, 83 (1997)] we calculate the specific heat of the corresponding two dimensional Euclidean (classical) models. We show that the temperature dependence of the specific heat of the sine-Gordon model, in the commensurate phase, has a maximum well below the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and that the sinh-Gordon model is thermodynamically unstable in the strong coupling regime. We give also the temperature dependence of the specific heat in the incommensurate phase of the sine-Gordon model.

Induced Luttinger Liquid Behavior in an Exactly Solvable Model of Stripes

We study an exactly solvable model describing a stripe consisting of a Toda array of $N$ anharmonic elastic chains sandwiched between two conducting chains. It is shown that the presence of a charge on one chain generates a gapless excitation branch (Luttinger liquid) on the other and leads to increase in the phonon frequencies.

Realization of Haldane's Exclusion Statistics in a Model of Electron-Phonon Interactions

We discuss an integrable model describing one-dimensional electrons interacting with two-dimensional anharmonic phonons. In the low temperature limit it is possible to decouple phonons and consider one-dimensional excitations separately. They have a trivial two-body scattering matrix and obey fractional statistics. As far as we know the original model presents the first example of a model with local bare interactions generating purely statistical interactions between renormalized particles. As a by-product we obtain non-trivial thermodynamic equations for the interacting system of two-dimensional phonons.

Dynamical Magnetic Susceptibilities in Cu Benzoate

Recent experiments on the quasi 1-D antiferromagnet Cu Benzoate revealed a magentic field induced gap coexisting with (ferro)magnetic order. A theory explaining these findings has been proposed by Oshikawa and Affleck. In the present work we discuss consequences of this theory for inelastic neutron scattering experiments by calculating the dynamical magnetic susceptibilities close to the antiferromagnetic wave vector by the formfactor method.

Zero Modes and Thermodynamics of Disordered Spin-1/2 Ladders

The influence of nonmagnetic doping on the thermodynamic properties of two-leg S = 1/2 spin ladders is studied in this paper. It is shown that, for a weak interchain coupling, the problem can be mapped onto a model of random mass Dirac (Majorana) fermions. We investigate in detail the structure of the fermionic states localized at an individual mass kink (zero modes) in the framework of a generalized Dirac model. The low-temperature thermodynamic properties are dominated by these zero modes. We use the single-fermion density of states, known to exhibit the Dyson singularity in the zero-energy limit, to construct the thermodynamics of the spin ladder. In particular, we find that the magnetic susceptibility $χ$ diverges at $T\to 0$ as $1/T\ln^2(1/T)$, and the specific heat behaves as $C\propto 1/\ln^3(1/T)$. The predictions on magnetic susceptibility are consistent with the most recent results of quantum Monte Carlo simulations on doped ladders with randomly distributed impurities. We also calculate the average staggered magnetic susceptibility induced in the system by such defects.

Quasi-1D spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnets in their ordered phase: correlation functions

We study weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chains in their ordered phase by combinining an exact solution of the single-chain problem with an RPA analysis of the interchain interaction. A single chain is described by a quantum Sine-Gordon model and dynamical staggered susceptibilities are determined by employing the formfactor approach to quantum correlation functions. We consider both antiferromagnetic order encountered in quasi-1D materials like $KCuF_3$ and spin-Peierls order as found in $CuGeO_3$.

An Effective Theory for Midgap States in Doped Spin Ladder and Spin-Peierls Systems: Liouville Quantum Mechanics

In gapped spin ladder and spin-Peierls systems the introduction of disorder, for example by doping, leads to the appearance of low energy midgap states. The fact that these strongly correlated systems can be mapped onto one dimensional noninteracting fermions provides a rare opportunity to explore systems which have both strong interactions and disorder. In this paper we show that the statistics of the zero energy midgap wave functions in these models can be effectively described by Liouville Quantum Mechanics. This enables us to calculate the disorder averaged N-point correlation functions of these states (the explicit calculation is performed for N=2,3). We find that whilst these midgap states are typically weakly correlated, their disorder averaged correlation are power law. This discrepancy arises because the correlations are not self-averaging and averages of the wave functions are dominated by anomalously strongly correlated configurations.
