Dichotomy for the Brauer-Manin obstruction in characteristic p

Let X be a smooth, projective, geometrically integral variety over a global function field k of characteristic p. We show that if the unipotent Brauer group of X is zero, and the Picard scheme of X is torsion free, then only finitely many places of k can be potentially relevant to the Brauer--Manin obstruction for X. In the opposite case, almost all places of k are potentially relevant. If X is base changed from a finite field, then in both cases the finite set of exceptional places is empty. We give an example of a supersingular K3 surface over a global function field k of characteristic p>2 such that Br(X) is finite modulo Br(k), answering a question from our previous paper.

Hasse principle for intersections of two quadrics via Kummer surfaces

We prove new cases of the Hasse principle for Kummer surfaces constructed from 2-coverings of Jacobians of genus 2 curves, assuming finiteness of relevant Tate-Shafarevich groups. Under the same assumption, we deduce the Hasse principle for quartic del Pezzo surfaces with trivial Brauer group and irreducible or completely split characteristic polynomial, hence the Hasse principle for smooth complete intersections of two quadrics in the projective space of dimension at least 5.

Birational properties of word varieties

We prove that the subvariety of $SL(2)\times SL(2)$ given by the matrix equation $w(X,Y)=α$, where $w$ is a word in two letters, is closely related to an explicit smooth conic bundle over the associated `trace surface' in the 3-dimensional affine space. When $w$ is the commutator word, we show that this variety can be irrational if the ground field $k$ is not algebraically closed, answering a question of Rapinchuk, Benyash-Krivetz, and Chernousov. When $k$ is a number field, it satisfies weak approximation with the Brauer--Manin obstruction.

Brauer groups of abelian varieties over fields of finite characteristic

We study the Brauer group of an abelian variety A over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p focusing on the p-primary torsion, the key part of which is a certain quasi-algebraic unipotent group U_A. We determine its dimension and obtain a sharp upper bound for its p-exponent. The isogeny class of U_A is classified for abelian varieties A of dimension at most 3. For principally polarised abelian varieties we compute the dimension of the p-torsion subgroup of U_A in terms of the Ekedahl--Oort type of A.

Boundedness of the p-primary torsion of the Brauer group of products of varieties

We prove that the quotient of the Brauer group of a product of varieties over k by the sum of the images of the Brauer groups of factors has finite exponent. The bulk of the proof concerns p-primary torsion in characteristic p. Our approach gives a more direct proof of the boundedness of the p-primary torsion of the Brauer group of an abelian variety, as recently proved by D'Addezio. We show that the transcendental Brauer group of a Kummer surface over k has finite exponent, but can be infinite when k is an infinite field of positive characteristic. This answers a question of Zarhin and the author.

Generic diagonal conic bundles revisited

We prove a stronger form of our previous result that Schinzel's Hypothesis holds for $100\%$ of $n$-tuples of integer polynomials satisfying the usual necessary conditions, where the primes represented by the polynomials are subject to additional constraints in terms of Legendre symbols, as well as upper and lower bounds. We establish the triviality of the Brauer group of generic diagonal conic bundles over the projective line. Finally, we give an explicit lower bound for the probability that diagonal conic bundles in certain natural families have rational points.

Schinzel Hypothesis on average and rational points

We resolve Schinzel's Hypothesis (H) for $100\%$ of polynomials of arbitrary degree. We deduce that a positive proportion of diagonal conic bundles over $\mathbb{Q}$ with any given number of degenerate fibres have a rational point, and obtain similar results for generalised Châtelet equations.

Enriques involutions and Brauer classes

We prove that every element of order 2 in the Brauer group of a complex Kummer surface X descends to an Enriques quotient of X. In 'generic' cases this gives a bijection between the set Enr(X) of Enriques quotients of X up to isomorphism and the set of Brauer classes of X of order 2. For some K3 surfaces of Picard rank 20 we prove that the fibres of the map from Enr(X) to Br(X)[2] above the non-zero points have the same order.

Cohomology and the Brauer groups of diagonal surfaces

We present a method for calculating the Brauer group of a surface given by a diagonal equation in the projective space. For diagonal quartic surfaces with coefficients in Q we determine the Brauer groups over Q and Q(i).

Invariant Brauer group of an abelian variety

We study a new object that can be attached to an abelian variety or a complex torus: the invariant Brauer group, as recently defined by Yang Cao. Over the field of complex numbers this is an elementary abelian 2-group with an explicit upper bound on the rank. We exhibit many cases in which the invariant Brauer group is zero, and construct complex abelian varieties in every dimension starting with 2, both simple and non-simple, with invariant Brauer group of order 2. We also address the situation in finite characteristic and over non-closed fields.

On uniformity conjectures for abelian varieties and K3 surfaces

We discuss logical links among uniformity conjectures concerning K3 surfaces and abelian varieties of bounded dimension defined over number fields of bounded degree. The conjectures concern the endomorphism algebra of an abelian variety, the Neron-Severi lattice of a K3 surface, and the Galois invariant subgroup of the geometric Brauer group.

Pseudo-split fibres and arithmetic surjectivity

Let $f: X \to Y$ be a dominant morphism of smooth, proper and geometrically integral varieties over a number field $k$, with geometrically integral generic fibre. We give a necessary and sufficient geometric criterion for the induced map $X(k_v) \to Y(k_v)$ to be surjective for almost all places $v$ of $k$. This generalizes a result of Denef which had previously been conjectured by Colliot-Thélène, and can be seen as an optimal geometric version of the celebrated Ax-Kochen theorem.

Kummer varieties and their Brauer groups

We study Kummer varieties attached to 2-coverings of abelian varieties of arbitrary dimension. Over a number field we show that the subgroup of odd order elements of the Brauer group does not obstruct the Hasse principle. Sufficient conditions for the triviality of the Brauer group are given, which allow us to give an example of a Kummer K3 surface of geometric Picard rank 17 over the rationals with trivial Brauer group. We establish the non-emptyness of the Brauer--Manin set of everywhere locally soluble Kummer varieties attached to 2-coverings of products of hyperelliptic Jacobians with large Galois action on 2-torsion.

Finiteness theorems for K3 surfaces and abelian varieties of CM type

We study abelian varieties and K3 surfaces with complex multiplication defined over number fields of fixed degree. We show that these varieties fall into finitely many isomorphism classes over an algebraic closure of the field of rational numbers. As an application we confirm finiteness conjectures of Shafarevich and Coleman in the CM case. In addition we prove the uniform boundedness of the Galois invariant subgroup of the geometric Brauer group for forms of a smooth projective variety satisfying the integral Mumford--Tate conjecture. When applied to K3 surfaces, this affirms a conjecture of Várilly-Alvarado in the CM case.

Pathologies of the Brauer-Manin obstruction

We construct a conic bundle over an elliptic curve over a real quadratic field that is a counterexample to the Hasse principle not explained by the étale Brauer-Manin obstruction. We also give simple examples of threefolds with the same property that are families of 2-dimensional quadrics, and discuss some other examples and general properties of the Brauer-Manin obstruction.

Hasse principle for generalised Kummer varieties

The existence of rational points on Kummer varieties associated to 2-coverings of abelian varieties over number fields can sometimes be proved through the variation of the Selmer group in the family of quadratic twists of the underlying abelian variety, using an idea of Swinnerton-Dyer. Following Mazur and Rubin, we consider the case when the Galois action on the 2-torsion has a large image. Under mild additional hypotheses we prove the Hasse principle for the associated Kummer varieties assuming the finiteness of relevant Shafarevich-Tate groups.
