Impact of Future Dihadron Production Measurements on the Transversity Distributions and Tensor Charges of the Nucleon

We assess the impact of future measurements of dihadron production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering from the CLAS12 and proposed SoLID experiments at Jefferson Lab, as well as from the ePIC experiment at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), on the transversity parton distribution functions (PDFs) and the corresponding tensor charges of the nucleon. To this end, we generate pseudo-data for these experiments for a proton target (CLAS12 and ePIC) and a $^3$He target (SoLID and ePIC), and we include these pseudo-data in the JAMDiFF global analysis of existing experimental dihadron data. We find that future data from Jefferson Lab will significantly reduce uncertainties in the transversity PDFs in the region of intermediate-to-large quark momentum fractions $x$, while the EIC will provide strong constraints across the entire range of $x$, allowing for the first experimental test of the predicted small-$x$ behavior of the transversity PDFs. In discussing the reduction of uncertainties in the tensor charges, we also compare the results from the data analyses with those from lattice QCD, highlighting scenarios in which compatibility or tension between the two would arise.

TMDs in the Lens of Generative AI: A Pixel-Based Approach to Partonic Imaging

This work introduces a novel, nonparametric pixel-based framework for the Bayesian inference and imaging of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions. The methodology is built upon a fully differentiable framework that integrates TMD evolution with the Collins-Soper-Sterman formalism, enabling the simultaneous extraction of partonic distributions and the nonperturbative evolution kernel. To achieve efficient and exact sampling of the high-dimensional posterior, we leverage generative AI through a hybrid normalizing flow-driven Metropolis-Hastings approach. The framework is validated through multi-scale closure tests of increasing complexity, ranging from basic functional models to convoluted structure functions. Using singular value decomposition (SVD), we rigorously characterize the uncertainty of the reconstructed distributions and reveal the existence of null TMDs, which are functional components in the null space of the kernel that remain unconstrained by observables. The new framework provides the first integration of pixel-based discretization, generative AI, and SVD within a Bayesian context to solve the TMD inverse problem. This synergy between machine learning and multi-scale data removes inherent degeneracies and enables unbiased 3D partonic imaging.

Next-to-next-to-leading power corrections to unpolarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) is a key tool for exploring the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon through Transverse Momentum Dependent parton distributions and fragmentation functions. While leading-power contributions to the SIDIS cross-section are well established, next-to-leading (NLP) of order $1/Q$ and next-to-next-to-leading power (NNLP) corrections of order $1/Q^2$ to the hadronic tensor have only recently begun to be systematically investigated. These corrections are essential for the reliable phenomenology and interpretation of modern high-precision data. In recent papers by one of the authors, NNLP corrections to Drell-Yan process were derived using rapidity factorization formalism. In the present work we extend this approach to SIDIS and obtain analytic expressions for the unpolarized structure functions. We derive NNLP corrections that include convolutions of unpolarized distributions, $f_1$, with unpolarized fragmentation functions, $D_1$, and Boer-Mulders functions, $h_1^\perp$, with Collins fragmentation functions, $H_1^\perp$. We compare our results with previous formulations, provide numerical studies, confront our predictions with HERMES and COMPASS measurements, and present predictions for future experiments at Jefferson Lab and the Electron-Ion Collider.

Study of SIDIS Unpolarized Cross Sections from a $^3$He Target with the Solenoidal Large Intensity Device at JLab

In this paper we present a detailed impact study of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering unpolarized cross sections' measurements using the proposed SoLID apparatus at Jefferson Lab. This type of data, collected at large Bjorken $x_{bj}$, moderate values of $Q^2$ and small values of the transverse momentum of produced hadrons, $P_{hT}$, allows to study transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and fragmentation functions in a still poorly explored region. We present the projected results for charged light mesons based on simulated data. For the azimuthal-angle integrated cross sections we adopt the TMD framework up to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (N3LL) accuracy, while a simpler TMD parton model is employed for the study of azimuthal angular dependencies.

Transverse single-spin asymmetries in $\gamma$SIDIS as a direct probe of quark-gluon-quark longitudinal momentum structure

Transverse single-spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic production of isolated photons ($\gamma$SIDIS), $A_{UT}^{\gamma {\rm SIDIS}}$, provide an unprecedented opportunity to extract the quark-gluon-quark correlators $F_{FT}(x,x')$ and $G_{FT}(x,x')$ point-by-point in their full support $x,x'$. We utilize realistic models for these functions, based on input from the Sivers transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function and imposing constraints from the $d_2$ matrix element calculated in lattice QCD, in order to provide numerical estimates for $A_{UT}^{\gamma {\rm SIDIS}}$ at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We thoroughly explore the EIC phase space in order to isolate in which regions the asymmetry can be sizable, finding it can be as much as $10\%$ or larger for certain kinematics. Given that $F_{FT}(x,x')$ and $G_{FT}(x,x')$ are basically unknown, $A_{UT}^{\gamma {\rm SIDIS}}$ will be an important future measurement to learn about multi-parton correlations in the nucleon.

Transverse momentum distributions at large-$x$

We investigate the collinear matching of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions at large values of $x$, computing and resumming the leading large-$x$ asymptotics for matching coefficients. The large-$x$ resummation is done directly within TMD distributions, ensuring the process-independence of the result. The derived resummation formulas are valid for all TMD distributions (except the pretzelosity). Their application improves perturbative convergence, provides practical estimation for unknown higher-order contributions, and sets restrictions for the nonperturbative part of models. Using the known anomalous dimensions, resummation can reach N$^3$LL, often exceeding the accuracy of known coefficient functions.

Simultaneous reweighting of Transverse Momentum Dependent distributions

The Bayesian reweighting procedure is extended to the case of multiple independent extractions of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). By exploiting the data on transverse single spin asymmetries, $A_N$, for inclusive pion production in polarized proton-proton collisions measured at RHIC, we perform a simultaneous reweighting of the quark Sivers, transversity and Collins TMD functions extracted from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and $e^+ e^-$ annihilation into hadron pairs. The impact of the implementation of the Soffer bound, as well as the differences between older and newer $A_N$ data, are investigated. The agreement with $A_N$ data at large-$x_F$ values, a kinematical region complementary to those explored in SIDIS measurements, is enhanced, improving the knowledge of the polarized quark TMDs in the large-$x$ region.

Transverse momentum moments

We establish robust relations between Transverse Momentum Dependent distributions (TMDs) and collinear distributions. We define weighted integrals of TMDs that we call Transverse Momentum Moments (TMMs) and prove that TMMs are equal to collinear distributions evaluated in some minimal subtraction scheme. The conversion to the modified minimal subtraction ($\bar{MS}$) scheme, can be done by a calculable factor, which we derive up to three loops for some cases. We discuss in detail the zeroth, the first, and the second TMMs and provide phenomenological results for them based on the current extractions of TMDs. The results of this paper open new avenues for theoretical and phenomenological investigation of the three-dimensional and collinear hadron structures.

TMD Handbook

This handbook provides a comprehensive review of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions, commonly referred to as transverse momentum distributions (TMDs). TMDs describe the distribution of partons inside the proton and other hadrons with respect to both their longitudinal and transverse momenta. They provide unique insight into the internal momentum and spin structure of hadrons, and are a key ingredient in the description of many collider physics cross sections. Understanding TMDs requires a combination of theoretical techniques from quantum field theory, nonperturbative calculations using lattice QCD, and phenomenological analysis of experimental data. The handbook covers a wide range of topics, from theoretical foundations to experimental analyses, as well as recent developments and future directions. It is intended to provide an essential reference for researchers and graduate students interested in understanding the structure of hadrons and the dynamics of partons in high energy collisions.

Shedding light on shadow generalized parton distributions

The feasibility of extracting generalized parton distributions (GPDs) from deeply-virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) data has recently been questioned because of the existence of an infinite set of so-called ''shadow GPDs'' (SGPDs). These SGPDs depend on the process and manifest as multiple solutions (at a fixed scale $Q^2$) to the inverse problem that needs to be solved to infer GPDs from DVCS data. SGPDs therefore pose a significant challenge for extracting GPDs from DVCS data. With this motivation we study the extent to which QCD evolution can provide constraints on SGPDs. This is possible because the known classes of SGPDs begin to contribute to observables after evolution, and can then be constrained (at the input scale $Q^2_0$) by data that has a finite $Q^2$ range. The impact that SGPDs could have on determining the total angular momentum, pressure and sheer force distributions, and tomography is also discussed. Our key finding is that scale evolution, coupled with data over a wide range of skewness $\xi$ and $Q^2$, can constrain the class of SGPDs that we studied and potentially make possible the extraction of GPDs from DVCS data over a limited range in the GPD variables.

Neutrino-tagged jets at the Electron-Ion Collider

We explore the potential of jet observables in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering (CC DIS) events at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). Tagging jets with a recoiling neutrino, which can be identified by the event's missing transverse momentum, will allow for flavor-sensitive measurements of Transverse Momentum Dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). We present the first predictions for transverse-spin asymmetries in azimuthal neutrino-jet correlations and hadron-in-jet measurements. We study the kinematic reach and the precision of these measurements and explore their feasibility using parameterized detector simulations. We conclude that jet production in CC DIS, while challenging in terms of luminosity requirements, will complement the EIC experimental program to study the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon encoded in TMDs.

SIDIS-RC EvGen: a Monte-Carlo event generator of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with the lowest-order QED radiative corrections

SIDIS-RC EvGen is a C++ standalone Monte-Carlo event generator for studies of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) processes at medium to high lepton beam energies. In particular, the generator contains binary and library components for generating SIDS events and calculating cross sections for unpolarized or longitudinally polarized beam and unpolarized, longitudinally or transversely polarized target. The structure of the generator incorporates transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions, whereby we obtain multi-dimensional binned simulation results, which will facilitate the extraction of important information about the three-dimensional nucleon structure from SIDIS measurements. In order to build this software, we have used recent elaborate QED calculations of the lowest-order radiative effects, applied to the leading order Born cross section in SIDIS. In this paper, we provide details on the theoretical formalism as well as the construction and operation of SIDIS-RC EvGen, e.g., how we handle the event generation process and perform multi-dimensional integration. We also provide example programs, flowcharts, and numerical results on azimuthal transverse single-spin asymmetries.

Updated QCD global analysis of single transverse-spin asymmetries I: Extracting $\tilde{H}$, and the role of the Soffer bound and lattice QCD

We present an update to the QCD global analysis of single transverse-spin asymmetries presented in Cammarota, et al., PRD 102, 054002 (2020) (JAM3D-20). JAM3D-20 simultaneously included transverse momentum dependent and collinear twist-3 observables, both of which are sensitive to quark-gluon-quark correlations in hadrons. In this study we extract for the first time the twist-3 chiral odd fragmentation function $\tilde{H}$ by incorporating the $\sin\phi_s$ modulation data from SIDIS along with its contribution to the single transverse-spin asymmetry in pion production from proton-proton collisions. We also explore the impact of lattice QCD tensor charge calculations and the Soffer bound on our global analysis. We find that both constraints can be accommodated within our results, with $\tilde{H}$ playing a key role in maintaining agreement with the data from proton-proton collisions.

Reweighting the quark Sivers function with STAR jet data

The Bayesian reweighting procedure is applied for the first time to a TMD distribution, the quark Sivers function extracted from SIDIS data. By exploiting the recent published single spin asymmetry data for the inclusive jet production in $p^\uparrow p$ collisions from the STAR collaboration at RHIC, we show how such a procedure allows to incorporate the information contained in the new data set, without the need of re-fitting, and to explore a much wider $x$ region compared to SIDIS measurements. The reweighting method is also extended to the case of asymmetric errors, and the results show a significant improvement on the knowledge of the quark Sivers function.

Extraction of the Sivers function from SIDIS, Drell-Yan, and $W^\pm/Z$ boson production data with TMD evolution

We perform a global fit of the available polarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS), polarized pion-induced Drell-Yan (DY) and $W^\pm/Z$ boson production data at N$^3$LO and NNLO accuracy of the Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) evolution, and extract the Sivers function for $u$, $d$, $s$ and for sea quarks. The Qiu-Sterman function is determined in a model independent way via the operator product expansion from the extracted Sivers function. The analysis is supplemented by additional studies, such as the estimation of applicability region, the impact of the unpolarized distributions' uncertainties, the universality of the Sivers functions, positivity constraints, the significance of the sign-change relation, and the comparison with the existing extractions

Electron-Ion Collider impact study on the tensor charge of the nucleon

In this letter we study the impact of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) on the phenomenological extraction of the tensor charge from a QCD global analysis of single transverse-spin asymmetries (SSAs). We generate EIC pseudo-data for the Collins effect in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering for proton and $^{3\!}He$ beams across multiple center-of-mass energies. We find a significant reduction in the uncertainties for the up, down, and isovector tensor charges that will make their extraction from EIC data on SSAs as precise as current lattice QCD calculations. We also analyze the constraints placed by future data from the proposed SoLID experiment at Jefferson Lab, discuss its important complementary role to the EIC, and present the combined impact from both facilities.

Reweighting the Sivers function with jet data from STAR

The reweighting procedure that using Bayesian statistics incorporates the information contained in a new data set, without the need of re-fitting, is applied to the quark Sivers function extracted from Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) data. We exploit the recently published single spin asymmetry data for the inclusive jet production in polarized $pp$ collisions from the STAR Collaboration at RHIC, which cover a much wider $x$ region compared to SIDIS measurements. The reweighting method is extended to the case of asymmetric errors and the results show a remarkable improvement of the knowledge of the quark Sivers function.

N$^3$LO extraction of the Sivers function from SIDIS, Drell-Yan, and $W^\pm/Z$ data

We perform the global analysis of polarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS), pion-induced polarized Drell-Yan (DY), and $W^\pm/Z$ boson production data and extract the Sivers function for $u$, $d$, $s$ and for sea-quarks. We use the framework of transverse momentum dependent factorization at N$^3$LO accuracy. The Qiu-Sterman function is determined in a model-independent way from the extracted Sivers function. We also evaluate the significance of the predicted sign change of Sivers function in DY with respect to SIDIS.
