Least action principle and gravitational double layer

The higher derivative gravitational theories exhibit new phenomena absent in General Relativity. One of them is the possible formation of the so called double layer which is the pure gravitational phenomenon and can be interpreted, in a sense, as the gravitational shock wave. In this paper we show how some very important features of the double layer equations of motion can be extracted straight from the least action principle.

Phantom shell around black hole and global geometry

We describe the possible scenarios for the evolution of a thin spherically symmetric self-gravitating phantom shell around the Schwarzschild black hole. The general equations describing the motion of the shell with a general form of equation of state are derived and analyzed. The different types of space-time R- and T-regions and shell motion are classified depending on the parameters of the problem. It is shown that in the case of a positive shell mass there exist three scenarios for the shell evolution with an infinite motion and two distinctive types of collapse. Analogous scenarios were classified for the case of a negative shell mass. In particular this classification shows that it is impossible for the physical observer to detect the fantom energy flow. We shortly discuss the importance of our results for astrophysical applications.

What will the first year of SNO show?

The ratio of the measured to the predicted standard model CC event rates in SNO will be 0.47 if no oscillations occur. The best-fit active oscillation predictions for the CC ratio are: 0.35-39 (MSW) and 0.38-42 (vacuum) (all for a 5 MeV energy threshold), typically about 20% less than the no-oscillation expectation. We calculate the predicted ratios for six active and sterile neutrino oscillation solutions allowed at 99% CL and determine the dependence of the ratios on energy threshold. If the high-energy anomaly observed by SuperKamiokande is due to an enhanced hep flux, MSW active solutions predict that out of a total of 5000 CC events above 5 MeV in SNO between 49 and 54 events will be observed above 13 MeV whereas only 19 events are expected for no-oscillations and a nominal standard hep flux.

The Physics of Relic Neutrinos

We report on the main results presented at the workshop on The Physics of Relic Neutrinos. The study of relic neutrinos involves a broad spectrum of problems in particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. Features of baryogenesis and leptogenesis could be imprinted in the properties of the relic neutrino sea. Relic neutrinos played a crucial role in the big bang nucleosynthesis. Being the hot component of the dark matter, they have participated in the structure formation in the universe. Although the direct detection of the sea seems impossible at this stage, there could be various indirect manifestations of these neutrinos which would allow us to study the properties of the sea both in the past and at the present epoch.
