Embedded coherent structures from MHD to sub-ion scales in turbulent solar wind at 0.17 au

We study intermittent coherent structures in solar wind magnetic turbulence from MHD to kinetic plasma scales using Parker Solar Probe data during its first perihelion (at 0.17 au), when the satellite was in the Alfvénic slow wind of 340 km/s. The coherent structures are energetic events localized in time and covering wide range of scales. We detect them using Morlet wavelets. For the first time, we apply a multi-scale analyses in physical space to study these structures. At MHD scales within the inertial range, times scales $τ\in (1, 10^{2} )$ s, we find (i) current sheets including switchback boundaries and (ii) Alfvén vortices. Within these events, there are embedded structures at smaller scales: typically Alfvén vortices at ion scales, $τ\in (0.08, 1)$ s, and a compressible vortices at sub-ion scales, $τ\in (8,80)$ ms. The number of coherent structures grows toward smaller scales: we observe about $\sim 200$ events during 5 h time interval at MHD scales, $\sim 10^{3}$ events ai ion scales and $\sim 10^{4}$ events at sub-ion scales. In general, there are multiple structures of ion and sub-ion scales embedded within one MHD structure. There are also examples of ion and sub-ion scales structures outside of MHD structures. To quantify the relative importance of different type of structures, we do a statistical comparison of the observed structures with the expectations of models of the current sheets and vortices. This comparison is based on amplitude anisotropy of magnetic fluctuations within the structures. The results show the dominance of Alfvén vortices at all scales in contrast to the widespread view of dominance of current sheets. This means that Alfvén vortices are important building blocs of solar wind turbulence.

Influence of toroidal flow on stationary density of collisionless plasmas

Starting from the given passive particle equilibrium particle cylindrical profiles, we built self-consistent stationary conditions of the Maxwell-Vlasov equation at thermodynamic equilibrium with non-flat density profiles. The solutions to the obtained equations are then discussed. It appears that the presence of an azimuthal (poloidal) flow in the plasma can insure radial confinement, while the presence of a longitudinal (toroidal) flow can enhance greatly the confinement. Moreover in the global physically reasonable situation, we find that no unstable point can emerge in the effective integrable Hamiltonian of the individual particles, hinting at some stability of the confinement when considering a toroidal geometry in the large aspect ratio limit.

Tailoring steep density profile with unstable points

The mesoscopic properties of a plasma in a cylindrical magnetic field are investigated from the view point of test-particle dynamics. When the system has enough time and spatial symmetries, a Hamiltonian of a test particle is completely integrable and can be reduced to a single degree of freedom Hamiltonian for each initial state. The reduced Hamiltonian sometimes has unstable fixed points (saddle points) and associated separatrices. To choose among available dynamically compatible equilibrium states of the one particle density function of these systems we use a maximum entropy principle and discuss how the unstable fixed points affect the density profile or a local pressure gradient, and are able to create a steep profile that improves plasma confinement.

Directed transport in a spatially periodic potential under periodic non-biased forcing

Transport of a particle in a spatially periodic harmonic potential under the influence of a slowly time-dependent unbiased periodic external force is studied. The equations of motion are the same as in the problem of a slowly forced nonlinear pendulum. Using methods of the adiabatic perturbation theory we show that for a periodic external force of general kind the system demonstrates directed (ratchet) transport in the chaotic domain on very long time intervals and obtain a formula for the average velocity of this transport. Two cases are studied: the case of the external force of small amplitude, and the case of the external force with amplitude of order one. The obtained formulas can also be used in case of a non-harmonic periodic potential.

Stability islands in domains of separatrix crossings in slow-fast Hamiltonian systems

We consider a 2 d.o.f. Hamiltonian system with one degree of freedom corresponding to fast motion and the other corresponding to slow motion. The ratio of the time derivatives of slow and fast variables is of order $0<\eps \ll 1$. At frozen values of the slow variables there is a separatrix on the phase plane of the fast variables and there is a region in the phase space (the domain of separatrix crossings) where the projections of phase points onto the plane of the fast variables repeatedly cross the separatrix in the process of evolution of the slow variables. Under a certain symmetry condition we prove existence of many (of order $1/\eps$) stable periodic trajectories in the domain of the separatrix crossings. Each of these trajectories is surrounded by a stability island whose measure is estimated from below by a value of order $\eps$. Thus, the total measure of the stability islands is estimated from below by a value independent of $\eps$. The proof is based on an analysis of the asymptotic formulas for the corresponding Poincaré map.

Capture into resonance in dynamics of a classical hydrogen atom in an oscillating electric field

We consider a classical hydrogen atom in a linearly polarized electric field of slow changing frequency. When the system passes through a resonance between the driving frequency and the Kepler frequency of the electron's motion, a capture into the resonance can occur. We study this phenomenon in the case of 2:1 resonance and show that the capture results in growth of the eccentricity of the electron's orbit. The capture probability for various initial values of the eccentricity is defined and calculated.
