CP violation

CP violation, which involves breaking the combined charge-conjugation (C) and parity (P) symmetries, is essential for understanding the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe. It is a key feature of the Standard Model, originating from complex phases in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. Despite the successes of the SM, the amount of CP violation it predicts is not enough to explain baryogenesis, prompting searches for new sources of CP violation in other areas of particle physics. This article offers a pedagogical introduction to the theoretical foundations of C, P, and T symmetries and their combinations. It also emphasizes the importance of CP violation in modern particle physics and how it can be used to explore New Physics.

Glueball-meson molecules

Experimental searches for pure glueball states have proven challenging and so far yielded no results. This is believed to occur because glueballs mix with the ordinary $q\bar q$ states with the same quantum numbers. We will discuss an alternative mechanism, the formation of the glueball-meson molecular states. We will argue that the wave functions of already observed excited meson states may contain a significant part due to such molecular states. We discuss the phenomenology of glueball-meson molecules and comment on a possible charmless component of the $XYZ$ states.

Invisible widths of heavy mesons

We revisit calculations of invisible widths of heavy mesons in the standard model, which serve as benchmarks for the studies of production of light, long-lived neutral particles in heavy meson decays. We challenge the common assumption that in the standard model these widths are dominated by meson decays into a two-neutrino final state and prove that they are dominated by decays into four-neutrino final states. We show that current estimates of the invisible widths of heavy mesons in the standard model underestimate the effect by orders of magnitude. We examine currently available experimental data on invisible widths and place constraints on the properties of dark photons. We also comment on the invisible widths of the kaons.

Hadronic decays of B_c mesons with flavor SU(3)_F symmetry

We study implications of a recent observation of non-leptonic $B^+_c\to D^0 K^+$ decay and a bound on $B^+_c\to D^0 π^+$ transition on CP-violating asymmetries in $B_c$ decays. In the U-spin symmetry limit, we derive a relation between the CP-asymmetries in the $B^+_c\to D^0 K^+$ and $B^+_c\to D^0 π^+$ channels and the corresponding branching ratios. We also derive several relations between non-leptonic $B_c$ decays into the final states with $D$ mesons in the flavor $SU(3)_F$ limit. We point out that a combined study of $SU(3)_F$ amplitudes in these decays can be used to constrain the angle $γ$ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix.

Theory of rare charm decays into leptons

Studies of rare decays of charmed mesons into the final states containing leptons is an important vehicle in low-energy searches for new physics. I review theoretical implications of those studies involving transitions with and without lepton flavor conservation. I argue that lepton-flavor violation (LFV) could be successfully studied in heavy quarkonium transitions yielding more sensitive results than similar searches involving $D$ mesons.

New Physics from rare decays of charm

Abundance of charm data in the current and future low energy flavor experiments makes it possible to study rare decays of D-mesons with ever increased precision. I discuss theoretical implications of derived constraints on New Physics models from these transitions. I argue that those constraints could be competitive with results of direct searches for New Physics particles (including Dark Matter) at the Large Hadron Collider.

Direct probes of flavor-changing neutral currents in $e^+e^-$ collisions

We propose a novel method to study flavor-changing neutral currents in the $e^+e^-\to D^{*0}$ and $e^+e^-\to B_{s}^* $ transitions, tuning the energy of $e^+e^-$- collisions to the mass of the narrow vector resonance $D^{*0}$ or $ B_{s}^*$. We present a thorough study of both short-distance and long-distance contributions to $e^+e^-\to D^{*0}$ in the Standard Model and investigate possible contributions of new physics in the charm sector. This process, albeit very rare, has clear advantages with respect to the $D^0 \to e^+e^-$ decay: the helicity suppression is absent, and a richer set of effective operators can be probed. Implications of the same proposal for $B_{s}^*$ are also discussed.

Relating B_s Mixing and B_s -> mu+mu- with New Physics

We perform a study of the Standard Model (SM) fit to the mixing quantities $ΔM_{B_s}$, and $ΔΓ_{B_s}/ΔM_{B_s}$ in order to bound contributions of New Physics to $B_s$ mixing. We then use this to explore the branching fraction of $B_{s} \to μ^+μ^-$ in certain models of New Physics (NP). In most cases, this constrains NP amplitudes for $B_{s} \to μ^+μ^-$ to lie below the SM component.

Searching for light Dark Matter in heavy meson decays

Beauty and charm e+e- factories running at resonance thresholds have unique capabilities for studies of the production of light Dark Matter particles in the decays of B_q (D) meson pairs. We provide a comprehensive study of light Dark Matter production in heavy meson decays with missing energy in the final state, such as B_q (D^0) -> "missing energy" and B_q (D^0) -> γ+ "missing energy". We argue that such transitions can be studied at the current flavor factories (and future super-flavor factories) by tagging the missing-energy decays with B_q (D^0) decays "on the other side".

Searching for New Physics with Charm

I provide a comprehensive review of indirect searches for New Physics with charmed mesons. I discuss current theoretical and experimental challenges and successes in understanding decays and mixings of those mesons. I argue that in many New Physics scenarios strong constraints, that surpass those from other search techniques, could be placed on the allowed model parameter space using the existent data from studies of charm transitions. This has direct implications for direct searches of physics beyond the Standard Model at the LHC.

Hadronic D and D_s Meson Decays

We provide a comprehensive review of hadronic decays of D and D_s mesons. We discuss current theoretical and experimental challenges and successes in understanding of hadronic transitions of those mesons. A brief overview of the theoretical and experimental tools are given before discussing the absolute branching fractions for D and D_s mesons. Cabibbo suppressed and rare hadronic decays are discussed and compared with theory before discussing our understanding of hadronic multibody decays.

Constraining New Physics from D0-anti-D0 mixing

I review constraints on possible New Physics interactions from D0-anti-D0 mixing measurements. I consider the most general low energy effective Hamiltonian and include leading order QCD running of effective operators. I discuss constraints from an extensive list of popular New Physics models, each of which could be discovered at the LHC, that can generate these operators. In most of the scenarios, strong constraints that surpass those from other search techniques could be placed on the allowed parameter space using the existent evidence for observation of D-meson mixing.

Charm mixing in the Standard Model and beyond

The motivation most often cited in searches for D0-anti-D0 mixing and CP-violation in charm system lies with the possibility of observing a signal from New Physics which dominates that from the Standard Model. We review recent theoretical predictions and experimental constraints on D0-anti-D0 mixing parameters, concentrating on possible effects of New Physics.
