Macroscopic and Microscopic Spectral Properties of Multilayer Brain Networks during Local and Global Synchronization

We introduce a practical and computationally not demanding technique for inferring interactions at various microscopic levels between the units of a network from the measurements and the processing of macroscopic signals. Starting from a network model of Kuramoto phase oscillators which evolve adaptively according to homophilic and homeostatic adaptive principles, we give evidence that the increase of synchronization within groups of nodes (and the corresponding formation of synchronous clusters) causes also the defragmentation of the wavelet energy spectrum of the macroscopic signal. Our methodology is then applied for getting a glance to the microscopic interactions occurring in a neurophysiological system, namely, in the thalamo-cortical neural network of an epileptic brain of a rat, where the group electrical activity is registered by means of multichannel EEG. We demonstrate that it is possible to infer the degree of interaction between the interconnected regions of the brain during different types of brain activities, and to estimate the regions' participation in the generation of the different levels of consciousness.

On-off intermittency of thalamo-cortical oscillations in the electroencephalogram of rats with genetic predisposition to absence epilepsy

Spike-wave discharges (SWD) are electroencephalographic hallmarks of absence epilepsy. SWD are known to originate from thalamo-cortical neuronal network that normally produce sleep spindle oscillations. Although both sleep spindles and SWD are considered as thalamo-cortical oscillations, functional relationship between them is still uncertain. The present study describes temporal dynamics of SWD and sleep spindles as determined in long-term EEG recordings in WAG/Rij rat model of absence epilepsy. It was found that non-linear dynamics of SWD fits well to the law of 'on-off intermittency'. Typical sleep spindles that occur during slow-wave sleep (SWS) also demonstrated 'on-off intermittency' behavior, in contrast to high-voltage spindles during intermediate sleep stage, whose dynamics was uncertain. This implies that both SWS sleep spindles and SWD are controlled by a system-level mechanism that is responsible for regulating circadian activity and/or sleep-wake transitions.

Generalized synchronization in discrete maps. New point of view on weak and strong synchronization

In the present Letter we show that the concept of the generalized synchronization regime in discrete maps needs refining in the same way as it has been done for the flow systems [PRE, 84 (2011) 037201]. We have shown that\alkor{, in the general case, when the relationship between state vectors of the interacting chaotic maps are considered,} the prehistory must be taken into account. We extend the phase tube approach to the systems with a discrete time coupled both unidirectionally and mutually and analyze the essence of the generalized synchronization by means of this technique. Obtained results show that the division of the generalized synchronization into the weak and the strong ones also must be reconsidered. Unidirectionally coupled logistic maps and Hénon maps coupled mutually are used as sample systems.

Generalized synchronization of chaos for secure communication: remarkable stability to noise

A new method for secure information transmission based on generalized synchronization is proposed. The principal advantage of it is a remarkable stability to noise. To reveal this peculiarity of the proposed method the effectiveness of the detection of the information signal from the transmitted one in the presence of noise in the communication channel is examined both for the proposed scheme and for the schemes of chaotic communication known already. The main ideas of the proposed method are illustrated by the example of coupled Rössler systems used both transmitter and receiver.

Computation of the spectrum of spatial Lyapunov exponents for the spatially extended beam-plasma systems and electron-wave devices

The spectrum of Lyapunov exponents is powerful tool for the analysis of the complex system dynamics. In the general framework of nonlinear dynamical systems a number of the numerical technics have been developed to obtain the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for the complex temporal behavior of the systems with a few degree of freedom. Unfortunately, these methods can not apply directly to analysis of complex spatio-temporal dynamics in plasma devices which are characterized by the infinite phase space, since they are the spatially extended active media. In the present paper we propose the method for the calculation of the spectrum of the spatial Lyapunov exponents (SLEs) for the spatially extended beam-plasma systems. The calculation technique is applied to the analysis of chaotic spatio-temporal oscillations in three different beam-plasma model: (1) simple plasma Pierce diode, (2) coupled Pierce diodes, and (3) electron-wave system with backward electromagnetic wave. We find an excellent agreement between the system dynamics and the behavior of the spectrum of the spatial Lyapunov exponents. Along with the proposed method, the possible problems of SLEs calculation are also discussed. It is shown that for the wide class of the spatially extended systems the set of quantities included in the system state for SLEs calculation can be reduced using the appropriate feature of the plasma systems.

Nearest Neighbors, Phase Tubes And Generalized Synchronization

In this paper we report for the first time on the necessity of the refinement of the concept of generalized chaotic synchronization. We show that the state vectors of the interacting chaotic systems being in the generalized synchronization regime are related with each other by the functional, but not the functional relation as it was assumed until now. We propose the phase tube approach explaining the essence of generalized synchronization and allowing the detection and the study of this regime in many relevant physical circumstances. The finding discussed in this Report gives a strong potential for new applications.

First experimental observation of generalized synchronization phenomena in microwave oscillators

In this Letter we report for the first time on the experimental observation of the generalized synchronization regime in the microwave electronic systems, namely, in the multicavity klystron generators. A new approach devoted to the generalized synchronization detection has been developed. The experimental observations are in the excellent agreement with the results of numerical simulation. The observed phenomena gives a strong potential for new applications requiring microwave chaotic signals.

Type-II intermittency characteristics in the presence of noise

We consider a type of intermittent behavior that occurs as the result of the interplay between dynamical mechanisms giving rise to type-II intermittency and random dynamics. We analytically deduce the law for the distribution of the laminar phases, which has never been obtained hitherto. The already known dependence of the mean length of the laminar phases on the criticality parameter [PRE 68 (2003) 036203] follows as a corollary of the carried out research. We also prove that this dependence obtained earlier under the assumption of the fixed form of the reinjection probability does not depend on the relaminarization properties, and, correspondingly, the obtained expression of the mean length of the laminar phases on the criticality parameter remains correct for different types of the reinjection probability.

Effect of noise on generalized synchronization of chaos: theory and experiment

The influence of noise on the generalized synchronization regime in the chaotic systems with dissipative coupling is considered. If attractors of the drive and response systems have an infinitely large basin of attraction, generalized synchronization is shown to possess a great stability with respect to noise. The reasons of the revealed particularity are explained by means of the modified system approach [A.E. Hramov, A.A. Koronovskii, Phys. Rev. E. 71, 067201 (2005)] and confirmed by the results of numerical calculations and experimental studies. The main results are illustrated using the examples of unidirectionally coupled chaotic oscillators and discrete maps as well as spatially extended dynamical systems. Different types of the model noise are analyzed. Possible applications of the revealed particularity are briefly discussed.

Synchronization in networks of slightly nonidentical elements

We study synchronization processes in networks of slightly non identical chaotic systems, for which a complete invariant synchronization manifold does not rigorously exist. We show and quantify how a slightly dispersed distribution in parameters can be properly modelled by a noise term affecting the stability of the synchronous invariant solution emerging for identical systems when the parameter is set at the mean value of the original distribution.

Incomplete noise-induced synchronization of spatially extended systems

A new type of noise-induced synchronous behavior is described. This phenomenon, called incomplete noise-induced synchronization, arises for one-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau equations driven by common noise. The mechanisms resulting in the incomplete noise-induced synchronization in the spatially extended systems are revealed analytically. The different model noise are considered. A very good agreement between the theoretical results and the numerically calculated data is shown.

Detection of synchronization from univariate data using wavelet transform

A method is proposed for detecting from univariate data the presence of synchronization of a self-sustained oscillator by external driving with varying frequency. The method is based on the analysis of difference between the oscillator instantaneous phases calculated using continuous wavelet transform at time moments shifted by a certain constant value relative to each other. We apply our method to a driven asymmetric van der Pol oscillator, experimental data from a driven electronic oscillator with delayed feedback and human heartbeat time series. In the latest case, the analysis of the heart rate variability data reveals synchronous regimes between the respiration and slow oscillations in blood pressure.

Two Types of Phase Synchronization Destruction

In this article we report that there are two different types of destruction of the phase synchronization regime of chaotic oscillators depending on the parameter mismatch as well as in the case of the classical synchronization of periodic oscillators. When the parameter mismatch of the interacting chaotic oscillators is small enough the PS breaking takes place without the destruction of the phase coherence of chaotic attractors of oscillators. Alternatively, due to the large frequency detuning, the PS breaking is accomplished by loss of the phase coherence of the chaotic attractors.

Ring Intermittency in Coupled Chaotic Oscillators at the Boundary of Phase Synchronization

A new type of intermittent behavior is described to occur near the boundary of phase synchronization regime of coupled chaotic oscillators. This mechanism, called ring intermittency, arises for sufficiently high initial mismatches in the frequencies of the two coupled systems. The laws for both the distribution and the mean length of the laminar phases versus the coupling strength are analytically deduced. A very good agreement between the theoretical results and the numerically calculated data is shown. We discuss how this mechanism is expected to take place in other relevant physical circumstances.

Chaotic synchronization in coupled spatially extended beam-plasma systems

The appearance of the chaotic synchronization regimes has been discovered for the coupled spatially extended beam-plasma Pierce systems. The coupling was introduced only on the right bound of each subsystem. It has been shown that with coupling increase the spatially extended beam-plasma systems show the transition from asynchronous behavior to the phase synchronization and then to the complete synchronization regime. For the consideration of the chaotic synchronization we used the concept of time scale synchronization described in work [Chaos, 14, 3 (2004) 603-610] and based on the introduction of the continuous set of phases of chaotic signal. In case of unidirectional coupling the generalized synchronization regime has been observed in the spatially extended beam-plasma systems. The generalized synchronization appearance mechanism has been analyzed by means of the offered modified system approach [Phys. Rev. E, 71, 6 (2005) 067201].

Detecting synchronization of self-sustained oscillators by external driving with varying frequency

We propose a method for detecting the presence of synchronization of self-sustained oscillator by external driving with linearly varying frequency. The method is based on a continuous wavelet transform of the signals of self-sustained oscillator and external force and allows one to distinguish the case of true synchronization from the case of spurious synchronization caused by linear mixing of the signals. We apply the method to driven van der Pol oscillator and to experimental data of human heart rate variability and respiration.

Generalized synchronization in coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations and mechanisms of its arising

Generalized chaotic synchronization regime is observed in the unidirectionally coupled one-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau equations. The mechanism resulting in the generalized synchronization regime arising in the coupled spatially extended chaotic systems demonstrating spatiotemporal chaotic oscillations has been described. The cause of the generalized synchronization occurrence is studied with the help of the modified Ginzburg-Landau equation with additional dissipation.
