Genesis of a Pythagorean Universe

The full-blown multiverse hypothesis, chaosogenesis, is refuted on the grounds of the large scale and high precision of the already discovered laws of nature. A selection principle is required not only to explain the possibility of life and consciousness, but also theoretizability of our universe. The weak anthropic principle provides the former, but not the latter. As chaosogenesis is shown to be the only thinkable scientific answer to the question of why the laws of nature are the way they are, its refutation means that this question cannot be answered scientifically.

Nested Head-Tail Vlasov Solver

Nested Head-Tail (NHT) is a Mathematica-based Vlasov solver for transverse oscillations in multi-bunch beams. It takes into account azimuthal, radial, coupled-bunch and beam-beam degrees of freedom, single- and inter-bunch dipole wakes, an arbitrary damper, beam-beam effects and Landau damping.

Three-beam instability in the LHC

In the LHC, a transverse instability is regularly observed at 4TeV right after the beta-squeeze, when the beams are separated by about their ten transverse rms sizes [1-3], and only one of the two beams is seen as oscillating. So far only a single hypothesis is consistent with all the observations and basic concepts, one about a third beam - an electron cloud, generated by the two proton beams in the high-beta areas of the interaction regions.

Transverse modes for flat inter-bunch wakes

If inter-bunch wake fields are flat, i.e. their variations over a bunch length can be neglected, all coherent modes have the same coupled-bunch structure, provided the bunches can be treated as identical by their inner qualities (train theorem). If a flat feedback is strong enough, the transverse modes are single-bunch, provided the inter-bunch wakes are also flat (damper theorem).

Head-Tail Modes for Strong Space Charge

The head-tail modes are described for the space charge tune shift significantly exceeding the synchrotron tune. A general equation for the modes is derived. The spatial shapes of the modes, their frequencies, and coherent growth rates are explored. The Landau damping rates are also found. The suppression of the transverse mode coupling instability by the space charge is explained.

Transverse Instabilities of Coasting Beams with Space Charge

Transverse beam stability is strongly affected by the beam space charge. Usually it is analyzed with the rigid-beam model. However this model is only valid when a bare (not affected by the space charge) tune spread is small compared to the space charge tune shift. This condition specifies a relatively small area of parameters which, however, is the most interesting for practical applications. The Landau damping rate and the beam Schottky spectra are computed assuming that validity condition is satisfied. The results are applied to a round Gaussian beam. The stability thresholds are described by simple fits for the cases of chromatic and octupole tune spreads.

Antiproton Stacking in the Recycler

Possibilities to accumulate antiprotons in the Recycler are considered for three different cases: with current stochastic cooling, with upgraded stochastic cooling and with electron cooling. With stochastic cooling only, even upgraded, Recycler looks hardly useful. However, with electron cooling at its goal parameters and reasonably good vacuum in the Recycler, this machine would be efficient.
