Spin/valley coupled dynamics of electrons and holes at the ${\text{MoS}_{2}-\text{MoSe}_{2}}$ interface

The coupled spin and valley degrees of freedom in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are considered a promising platform for information processing. Here, we use a TMD heterostructure ${\text{MoS}_{2}-\text{MoSe}_{2}}$ to study optical pumping of spin/valley polarized carriers across the interface and to elucidate the mechanisms governing their subsequent relaxation. By applying time-resolved Kerr and reflectivity spectroscopies, we find that the photoexcited carriers conserve their spin for both tunneling directions across the interface. Following this, we measure dramatically different spin/valley depolarization rates for electrons and holes, $\sim 30\,{\text{ns}}^{-1}$ and $< 1\,{\text{ns}}^{-1}$, respectively and show that this difference relates to the disparity in the spin-orbit splitting in conduction and valence bands of TMDs. Our work provides insights into the spin/valley dynamics of free carriers unaffected by complex excitonic processes and establishes TMD heterostructures as generators of spin currents in spin/valleytronic devices.

Control of ultrashort spin current pulses in metallic multilayers

We study the emission of femtosecond spin current pulses at Fe/Au interfaces. Using optical second harmonic generation we demonstrate the control of pulse shape and duration by varying the emitter thickness and show that it is determined by the parameters of hot electrons emission and the diffusive transport. Using a simple model of electron emission we develop a description of superdiffusive spin transport in Au allowing to extract electron velocity and scattering rates from the experimental data. The importance of carrier multiplication in Fe is demonstrated.

Effective exchange interaction for terahertz spin waves in iron layers

The exchange stiffness is a central material parameter of all ferromagnetic materials. Its value controls the Curie temperature as well as the dynamic properties of spin waves to a large extend. Using ultrashort spin current pulses we excite perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSW) in ultrathin epitaxial iron layers at frequencies of up to 2.4 THz. Our analysis shows that for the PSSWs the observed exchange stiffness of iron is about 20% smaller compared to the established iron bulk value. In addition, we find an interface-related reduction of the effective exchange stiffness for layers with the thickness below 10 nm. To understand and discuss the possible mechanisms of the exchange stiffness reduction we develop an analytical 1D-model. In doing so we find that the interface induced reduction of the exchange stiffness is mode-dependent.

Exploring the Asymmetry of the Solar Corona Electron Density with Very Long Baseline Interferometry

The Sun's corona has interested researchers for multiple reasons, including the search for solution for the famous coronal heating problem and a purely practical consideration of predicting geomagnetic storms on Earth. There exist numerous different theories regarding the solar corona; therefore, it is important to be able to perform comparative analysis and validation of those theories. One way that could help us move towards the answers to those problems is the search for observational methods that could obtain information about the physical properties of the solar corona and provide means for comparing different solar corona models. In this work we present evidence that VLBI observations are, in certain conditions, sensitive to the electron density of the solar corona and are able to distinguish between different electron density models, which makes the technique of VLBI valuable for solar corona investigations. Recent works on the subject used a symmetric power-law model of the electron density in solar plasma; in this work, an improvement is proposed based on a 3D numerical model.

Femtosecond spin current pulses generated by the non-thermal spin-dependent Seebeck effect and interacting with ferromagnets in spin valves

Using the sensitivity of magneto-induced second harmonic generation to spin currents (SC), we demonstrate in Fe/Au/Fe/MgO(001) pseudo spin valves the generation of 250 fs-long SC pulses. Their temporal profile indicates that superdiffusive hot electron transport across a sub-100~nm Au layer is close to the ballistic limit and the pulse duration is primarily determined by the thermalization time of laser-excited hot carriers in Fe. Considering the calculated spin-dependent Fe/Au interface transmittance we conclude that a non-thermal spin-dependent Seebeck effect is responsible for the generation of ultrashort SC pulses. We also show that hot electron spins rotate upon interaction with non-collinear magnetization at the Au/Fe interface, which holds high potential for future spintronic devices.

Nanoscale confinement of ultrafast spin transfer torque exciting non-uniform spin dynamics by femtosecond spin current pulses

Spintronics had a widespread impact over the past decades due to transferring information by spin rather than electric currents. Its further development requires miniaturization and reduction of characteristic timescales of spin dynamics combining the sub-nanometer spatial and femtosecond temporal ranges. These demands shift the focus of interest towards the fundamental open question of the interaction of femtosecond spin current (SC) pulses with a ferromagnet (FM). The spatio-temporal properties of the impulsive spin transfer torque exerted by ultrashort SC pulses on the FM open the time domain for probing non-uniform magnetization dynamics. Here we employ laser-generated ultrashort SC pulses for driving ultrafast spin dynamics in FM and analyzing its transient local source. Transverse spins injected into FM excite inhomogeneous high-frequency spin dynamics up to 0.6 THz, indicating that the perturbation of the FM magnetization is confined to 2 nm.

Nonlinear acousto-magneto-plasmonics

We review the recent progress in experimental and theoretical research of interactions between the acoustic, magnetic and plasmonic transients in hybrid metal-ferromagnet multilayer structures excited by ultrashort laser pulses. The main focus is on understanding the nonlinear aspects of the acoustic dynamics in materials as well as the peculiarities in the nonlinear optical and magneto-optical response. For example, the nonlinear optical detection is illustrated in details by probing the static magneto-optical second harmonic generation in gold-cobalt-silver trilayer structures in Kretschmann geometry. Furthermore, we show experimentally how the nonlinear reshaping of giant ultrashort acoustic pulses propagating in gold can be quantified by time-resolved plasmonic interferometry and how these ultrashort optical pulses dynamically modulate the optical nonlinearities. The effective medium approximation for the optical properties of hybrid multilayers facilitates the understanding of novel optical detection techniques. In the discussion we highlight recent works on the nonlinear magneto-elastic interactions, and strain-induced effects in semiconductor quantum dots.

Ultrafast transport of laser-excited spin polarized carriers in Au/Fe/MgO(001)

A time domain approach to probe hot carrier-induced spin dynamics is demonstrated. The experiments are performed in epitaxial Au/Fe/MgO(001), where spin-polarized hot carriers are excited in the Fe layer by 35 fs laser pulses. They propagate to the Au surface where the transient spin polarization is detected by magneto-induced second harmonic generation. Different energies of majority and minority hot carriers excited in the exchange-split Fe band structure lead to their spindependent lifetimes in Au. Accordingly, two spin-polarized current contributions which propagate superdiffusively at different velocities result in a spin current pulse of about 100 fs duration.

Ultrafast magnetization dynamics of Gd(0001): Bulk vs. surface

Ultrafast laser-induced demagnetization of Gd(0001) has been investigated by magneto-induced optical second harmonic generation and the magneto-optical Kerr effect which facilitate a comparison of surface and bulk dynamics. We observe pronounced differences in the transient changes of the surface and bulk sensitive magneto-optical signals which we attribute to transfer of optically excited, spin-polarized carriers between surface and bulk states of the Gd(0001) film. A fluence dependent analysis of the bulk magnetization dynamics results in a weak variation of the demagnetization time constant, which starts at about 700 fs and increases by 10% within a fluence variation up to 1 mJ/cm2. We compare these results with fluence dependent changes in the transient energy density calculated by the two temperature model. The determined characteristic times of excess energy transfer from the electron system to the lattice, which is mediated by e-ph scattering, range from 0.2 - 0.6 ps. Such a more pronounced fluence dependent change in the characteristic time compared to the observed rather weakly varying demagnetization times suggests a more advanced description of the optically excited state than by the two-temperature model.

Hot electron driven enhancement of spin-lattice coupling in 4f ferromagnets observed by femtosecond x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

Femtosecond x-ray magnetic circular dichroism was used to study the time-dependent magnetic moment of 4 fs electrons in the ferromagnets Gd and Tb, which are known for their different spin-lattice coupling. We observe a two-step demagnetization with an ultrafast demagnetization time of 750 fs identical for both systems and slower times which differ sizeably with 40 ps for Gd and 8 ps for Tb. We conclude that spin-lattice coupling in the electronically excited state is enhanced up to orders of magnitude compared to equilibrium.
