On minimal residual entropy in non-Fermi liquids

In the large $N$ limit a physical system might acquire a residual entropy at zero temperature even without ground state degeneracy. At the same time poles in the 2-point function might coalesce and form a branch cut. Both phenomena are related to a high density of states in the large $N$ limit. In this short note we address the question: does a branch cut in the 2-point function always lead to non-zero residual entropy? We argue that for generic fermionic systems in $0+1$ dimensions in the mean-field approximation the answer is positive: branch cut $1/τ^{2Δ}$ in the 2-point function does lead to a lower bound $N \log{2}(1/2-Δ)$ for the entropy. We also comment on higher-dimensional generalizations and relations to the holographic correspondence.

Black holes and cryptocurrencies

It has been proposed in the literature that the volume of Einstein-Rosen bridge is equal to complexity of state preparation ("Complexity=Volume" conjecture). Taking this statement outside the horizon, one might be tempted to propose "Complexity=Time" correspondence. In this Essay we argue that in a blockchain protocol, which is the foundation of all modern cryptocurrencies, time is emergent and it is defined according to a version of "Complexity=Time".

Quantum error correction and large $N$

In recent years quantum error correction(QEC) has become an important part of AdS/CFT. Unfortunately, there are no field-theoretic arguments about why QEC holds in known holographic systems. The purpose of this paper is to fill this gap by studying the error correcting properties of the fermionic sector of various large $N$ theories. Specifically we examine $SU(N)$ matrix quantum mechanics and 3-rank tensor $O(N)^3$ theories. Both of these theories contain large gauge groups. We argue that gauge singlet states indeed form a quantum error correcting code. Our considerations are based purely on large $N$ analysis and do not appeal to a particular form of Hamiltonian or holography.

Non-local reparametrization action in coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

We continue the investigation of coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev(SYK) models without Schwarzian action dominance. Like the original SYK, at large N and low energies these models have an approximate reparametrization symmetry. However, the dominant action for reparametrizations is non-local due to the presence of irrelevant local operator with small conformal dimension. We semi-analytically study different thermodynamic properties and the 4-point function and demonstrate that they significantly differ from the Schwarzian prediction. However, the residual entropy and maximal chaos exponent are the same as in Majorana SYK. We also discuss chain models and finite N corrections.

Coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models without Schwartzian dominance

We argue that in certain class of coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev(SYK) models the low energy physics at large N is governed by a non-local action rather than the Schwartzian action. We present a partial analytic and extensive numerical evidence for this. We find that these models are maximally chaotic and have the same residual entropy as Majorana SYK. However, thermodynamic quantities, such as heat capacity and diffusion constant are different.

Traversable wormholes in four dimensions

We present a wormhole solution in four dimensions. It is a solution of an Einstein Maxwell theory plus charged massless fermions. The fermions give rise to a negative Casimir-like energy, which makes the wormhole possible. It is a long wormhole that does not lead to causality violations in the ambient space. It can be viewed as a pair of entangled near extremal black holes with an interaction term generated by the exchange of fermion fields. The solution can be embedded in the Standard Model by making its overall size small compared to the electroweak scale.

Humanly traversable wormholes

We point out that there can be humanly traversable wormhole solutions in some previously considered theories for physics beyond the Standard Model, namely the Randall-Sundrum model.

Spontaneous Breaking of $U(1)$ Symmetry in Coupled Complex SYK Models

As shown in [1], two copies of the large $N$ Majorana SYK model can produce spontaneous breaking of a $Z_2$ symmetry when they are coupled by appropriate quartic terms. In this paper we similarly study two copies of the complex SYK model coupled by a quartic term preserving the $U(1) \times U(1)$ symmetry. We also present a tensor counterpart of this coupled model. When the coefficient $α$ of the quartic term lies in a certain range, the coupled large $N$ theory is nearly conformal. We calculate the scaling dimensions of fermion bilinear operators as functions of $α$. We show that the operator $c_{1i}^\dagger c_{2i}$, which is charged under the axial $U(1)$ symmetry, acquires a complex dimension outside of the line of fixed points. We derive the large $N$ Dyson-Schwinger equations and show that, outside the fixed line, this $U(1)$ symmetry is spontaneously broken at low temperatures because this operator acquires an expectation value. We support these findings by exact diagonalizations extrapolated to large $N$.

SYK wormhole formation in real time

We study the real time formation of the ground state of two coupled SYK models. This is a highly entangled state which is close to the thermofield double state and can be viewed as a wormhole. We start from a high temperature state, we let it cool by coupling to a cold bath. We numerically solve for the large N dynamics. Our main result is that the system forms a wormhole by going through a region with negative specific heat, taking time that is independent of N. The dynamics is smooth everywhere and it seems to follow the equilibrium thermodynamic configurations of the microcanonical ensemble. Also we comment on the relation between this coupled SYK model and Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity theory with bulk fields.

Universal Constraints on Energy Flow and SYK Thermalization

We study the dynamics of a quantum system in thermal equilibrium that is suddenly coupled to a bath at a different temperature, a situation inspired by a particular black hole evaporation protocol. We prove a universal positivity bound on the integrated rate of change of the system energy which holds perturbatively in the system-bath coupling. Applied to holographic systems, this bound implies a particular instance of the averaged null energy condition. We also study in detail the particular case of two coupled SYK models in the limit of many fermions using the Schwinger-Keldysh non-equilibrium formalism. We solve the resulting Kadanoff-Baym equations both numerically and analytically in various limits. In particular, by going to low temperature, this setup enables a detailed study of the evaporation of black holes in JT gravity.

Two faces of Douglas-Kazakov transition: from Yang-Mills theory to random walks and beyond

Being inspired by the connection between 2D Yang-Mills (YM) theory and (1+1)D "vicious walks" (VW), we consider different incarnations of large-$N$ Douglas-Kazakov (DK) phase transition in gauge field theories and stochastic processes focusing at possible physical interpretations. We generalize the connection between YM and VW, study the influence of initial and final distributions of walkers on the DK phase transition, and describe the effect of the $θ$-term in corresponding stochastic processes. We consider the Jack stochastic process involving Calogero-type interaction between walkers and investigate the dependence of DK transition point on a coupling constant. Relying on the relation between large-$N$ 2D $q$-YM and extremal black hole (BH) with large-$N$ magnetic charge, we speculate about a physical interpretation of a DK phase transitions in a 4D extremal charged BH.

Spectra of Eigenstates in Fermionic Tensor Quantum Mechanics

We study the $O(N_1)\times O(N_2)\times O(N_3)$ symmetric quantum mechanics of 3-index Majorana fermions. When the ranks $N_i$ are all equal, this model has a large $N$ limit which is dominated by the melonic Feynman diagrams. We derive an integral formula which computes the number of $SO(N_1)\times SO(N_2)\times SO(N_3)$ invariant states for any set of $N_i$. For equal ranks the number of singlets is non-vanishing only when $N$ is even, and it exhibits rapid growth: it jumps from $36$ in the $O(4)^3$ model to $595354780$ in the $O(6)^3$ model. We derive bounds on the values of energy, which show that they scale at most as $N^3$ in the large $N$ limit, in agreement with expectations. We also show that the splitting between the lowest singlet and non-singlet states is of order $1/N$. For $N_3=1$ the tensor model reduces to $O(N_1)\times O(N_2)$ fermionic matrix quantum mechanics, and we find a simple expression for the Hamiltonian in terms of the quadratic Casimir operators of the symmetry group. A similar expression is derived for the complex matrix model with $SU(N_1)\times SU(N_2)\times U(1)$ symmetry. Finally, we study the $N_3=2$ case of the tensor model, which gives a more intricate complex matrix model whose symmetry is only $O(N_1)\times O(N_2)\times U(1)$. All energies are again integers in appropriate units, and we derive a concise formula for the spectrum. The fermionic matrix models we studied possess standard 't Hooft large $N$ limits where the ground state energies are of order $N^2$, while the energy gaps are of order $1$.

To gauge or not to gauge?

The D0 brane, or BFSS, matrix model is a quantum mechanical theory with an interesting gravity dual. We consider a variant of this model where we treat the $SU(N)$ symmetry as a global symmetry, rather than as a gauge symmetry. This variant contains new non-singlet states. We consider the impact of these new states on its gravity dual. We argue that the gravity dual is essentially the same as the one for the original matrix model. The non-singlet states have higher energy at strong coupling and are therefore dynamically suppressed.

Spectra of Operators in Large $N$ Tensor Models

We study the operators in the large $N$ tensor models, focusing mostly on the fermionic quantum mechanics with $O(N)^3$ symmetry which may be either global or gauged. In the model with global symmetry we study the spectra of bilinear operators, which are in either the symmetric traceless or the antisymmetric representation of one of the $O(N)$ groups. In the symmetric traceless case, the spectrum of scaling dimensions is the same as in the SYK model with real fermions; it includes the $h=2$ zero-mode. For the operators anti-symmetric in the two indices, the scaling dimensions are the same as in the additional sector found in the complex tensor and SYK models; the lowest $h=0$ eigenvalue corresponds to the conserved $O(N)$ charges. A class of singlet operators may be constructed from contracted combinations of $m$ symmetric traceless or antisymmetric two-particle operators. Their two-point functions receive contributions from $m$ melonic ladders. Such multiple ladders are a new phenomenon in the tensor model, which does not seem to be present in the SYK model. The more typical $2k$-particle operators do not receive any ladder corrections and have quantized large $N$ scaling dimensions $k/2$. We construct pictorial representations of various singlet operators with low $k$. For larger $k$ we use available techniques to count the operators and show that their number grows as $2^k k!$. As a consequence, the theory has a Hagedorn phase transition at the temperature which approaches zero in the large $N$ limit. We also study the large $N$ spectrum of low-lying operators in the Gurau-Witten model, which has $O(N)^6$ symmetry. We argue that it corresponds to one of the generalized SYK models constructed by Gross and Rosenhaus. Our paper also includes studies of the invariants in large $N$ tensor integrals with various symmetries.
