Bianchi IX dynamics with a phantom field

We consider Bianchi IX dynamics of a Universe filled with a massless phantom field. Such an exotic matter source enables regimes impossible in vacuum or with a standard scalar field. In particular, two Kasner indices of BKL oscillations can be simultaneously negative, and the absolute value of a negative index can be large. We describe the consequences of these features and explain the nature of volume oscillations recently discovered in such a system by numerical methods.

A note on splitting solutions in $4+1$ dimensional quadratic gravity

In the present paper we consider anisotropic cosmological vacuum solutions in (4+1) dimensional general quadratic gravity. In particular, we present a solution with 3 equal and 1 different Hubble parameters, and study its stability. We show that for a certain range of coupling constants this solution is stable. This means that initially totally anisotropic 4-dim Universe can evolve naturally to a product of 3-dim isotropic subspace and 1-dim space. By numerical integration of equations of motion we construct bassin of attraction of this solution which covers part of the initial conditions space with non-zero measure.

Six-dimensional cosmological models with conformal extensions

We consider the background cosmological solutions in the $6D$ (six-dimensional) model with one time and five space coordinates. The theory of our interest has the action composed by the Einstein term, cosmological constant, and two conformal terms constructed from the third powers of the Weyl tensor. It is shown how the highest derivative terms in the equations of motion can be isolated that opens the way for their numerical integration. There are flat anisotropic solutions which make one of the flat isotropic subspaces to be static. Depending on the value of bare cosmological constant, either two-dimensional or three-dimensional subspace can be static. In particular, there is a physically favorable solution with three ``large'' space coordinates and two extra inner dimensions stabilized. This solution is stable for a wide range of coupling constants, but this requires a special value of the bare cosmological constant.

Initial conditions for Starobinsky inflation in general quadratic gravity

We consider initial conditions leading to Starobinsky inflation in the general quadratic gravity, where the action of the theory contains one more curvature square invariant in addition to $R^2$. We have chosen corresponding coefficients in a way so that the inflationary solution keeps to be stable. Our numerical results show that despite the configuration of initial conditions in the $(H,R)$ plane, leading to Starobinsky inflation can change considerably from the $R^2$ theory, realization of inflation does not need a fine-tuning of the initial conditions.

Compactification of Anisotropies in Einstein-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet Cosmology

We investigate the evolution of anisotropies in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory with a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet term. Specifically, we examine the simplest scenario in which the scalar field lacks a kinetic term, and its kinetic contribution arises from an integration by parts of the Gauss-Bonnet scalar. We consider four- and five-dimensional anisotropic spacetimes, focusing on Bianchi I and extended Bianchi I geometries. Our study reveals that the asymptotic solutions correspond to locally symmetric spacetimes where at least two scale factors exhibit analogous behavior or, alternatively, to isotropic configurations where all scale factors evolve identically. Additionally, we discuss the effects of a cosmological constant, finding that the presence of the cosmological constant does not lead to an isotropic universe.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking as a result of extra dimensions compactification

We consider dynamics of a scalar field in compactification scenario of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet cosmology. It is shown that if the field is non-minimally coupled to curvature, its asymptotic value under certain conditions may be shifted from the minimum of its potential. This means that due to influence of extra dimensions a scalar field with $λϕ^4$ potential can stabilise away from $ϕ=0$ stable point which means an effective symmetry breaking occurs in such a system.

Initial conditions for Starobinsky Inflation with a positive spatial curvature

We have found numerically initial conditions in the $(R, H)$ plane leading to a successful Starobinsky inflation in $R+R^2$ gravity for a isotropic metrics with positive spatial curvature. Trajectories can reach inflation regime either directly or going through a bounce, and even recollapse followed by a bounce. Our numerical plots indicate that ``good" initial conditions exist even for big initial spatial curvature, however, we argue that such a trajectory must cross a region of rather big $R$ or $H$. This means that the range of viability of $R+R^2$ theory in the $(R,H)$ plane directly affect the question of viability of Starobinsky inflation for a positive spatial curvature isotropic Universe.

Stability analysis of compactification in 3-d order Lovelock gravity

It is known that spatial curvature can stabilize extra dimensions in Lovelock gravity. In the present paper we study stability of the stabilization solutions in 3-d order Lovelock gravity. We show that in the case of negative spatial curvature of extra dimension space the stabilization solution is always stable. On the contrary, for positive spatial curvature the stability depends on the coupling constant values.

Global portraits of nonminimal inflation

We reconsider the dynamical systems approach to analyze inflationary universe in the Jordan frame models of scalar field nonminimally coupled to curvature. The adopted set of variables allows us to clearly distinguish between different asymptotic states in the phase space, including the kinetic and inflationary regimes. Inflation is realized as a heteroclinic trajectory originating either at infinity from a nonhyperbolic asymptotic de Sitter point or from a regular saddle de Sitter point. We also present a comprehensive picture of possible initial conditions leading to sufficient inflationary expansion and show their extent on the phase diagrams. In addition we comment on the slow roll conditions applicable in the Jordan frame and show how they approximate the leading inflationary "attractor solution". As particular examples we portrait quadratic and quartic potential models and note that increasing the nonminimal coupling diminishes the range of good initial conditions in the quadratic case, but enlarges is in the quartic case.

Static cosmological solutions in quadratic gravity

We consider conditions for existence and stability of a static cosmological solution in quadratic gravity. It appears that such a solution for a Universe filled by only one type of perfect fluid is possible in a wide range of the equation of state parameter $w$ and for both positively and negatively spatially curved Universe. We show that the static solution for the negative curvature is always unstable if we require positive energy density of the matter content. On the other hand, a static solution with positive spatial curvature can be stable under certain restrictions. Stability of this solution with respect to isotropic perturbation requires that the coupling constant with the $R^2$ therm in the Lagrangian of the theory is positive, and the equations of state parameter $w$ is located in a rather narrow interval. Nevertheless, the stability condition does not require violation of the Strong Energy Condition. Taking into account anisotropic perturbations leads to further restrictions on the values of coupling constants and the parameter $w$.

Cosmological solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with static curved extra dimensions

In this paper we perform systematic investigation of all possible solutions with static compact extra dimensions and expanding three-dimensional subspace (``our Universe''). Unlike previous papers, we consider extra-dimensional subspace to be constant-curvature manifold with both signs of spatial curvature. We provide a scheme how to build solutions in all possible number of extra dimensions and perform stability analysis for the solutions found. Our study suggests that the solutions with negative spatial curvature of extra dimensions are always stable while those with positive curvature are stable for a narrow range of the parameters and the width of this range shrinks with growth of the number of extra dimensions. This explains why in the previous papers we detected compactification in the case of negative curvature but the case of positive curvature remained undiscovered. Another interesting feature which distinguish cases with positive and negative curvatures is that the latter do not coexist with maximally-symmetric solutions (leading to ``geometric frustration'' of a sort) while the former could -- this difference is noted and discussed.

Anisotropic cosmological dynamics in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity: an example of dynamical compactification in 7+1 dimensions

We consider a particular example of dynamical compactification of an anisotropic 7+1 dimensional Universe in Einstein - Gauss - Bonnet gravity. Starting from rather general totally anisotropic initial conditions a Universe in question evolves towards a product of two isotropic subspaces. The first subspace expands isotropically, the second represents an "inner" isotropic subspace with stabilized size. The dynamical evolution does not require fine-tuning of initial conditions, though it is possible for a particular range of coupling constants. The corresponding condition have been found analytically and have been confirmed using numerical integration of equations of motion.

Splitting into two isotropic subspaces as a result of cosmological evolution in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We consider numerically dynamics of a flat anisotropic Universe in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with positive $Λ$ in dimensionalities 5+1 and 6+1. We identify three possible outcomes of the evolution, one singular and two nonsingular. First nonsingular outcome is oscillatory. Second is the known exponential solution. The simplest version of it is the isotropic de Sitter solution. In Gauss-Bonnet cosmology there exist also anisotropic exponential solutions. When an exponential solution being an outcome of cosmological evolution has two different Hubble parameters, the evolution leads from initially totally anisotropic stage to a sum of two isotropic subspaces. We show that such type of evolution is rather typical and possible even in the case when de Sitter solution also exists.

Velocities of distant objects in General Relativity revisited

We consider two most popular definitions of velocities of remote objects in General Relativity. Our work has two motivations. From a research point of view, we generalize the formula connecting these two velocities in FRW metrics found by Chodorowski to arbitrary synchronous spherically symmetric metrics. From a methodological point of view, our goal is to outline certain counter-intuitive properties of the definitions in question, which would allow to use them when it is reasonable and to avoid incorrect statements, based on inappropriate use of intuition.

Dynamic compactification with stabilized extra dimensions in cubic Lovelock gravity

In this paper the dynamic compactification in Lovelock gravity with a cubic term is studied. The ansatz will be of space-time where the three dimensional space and the extra dimensions are constant curvature manifolds with independent scale factors. The numerical analysis shows that there exist a phenomenologically realistic compactification regime where the three dimensional hubble parameter and the extra dimensional scale factor tend to a constant. This result comes as surprise as in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity this regime exists only when the couplings of the theory are such that the theory does not admit a maximally symmetric solution (i.e. "geometric frustration"). In cubic Lovelock gravity however there always exists at least one maximally symmetric solution which makes it fundamentally different from the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet case. Moreover, in opposition to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity, it is also found that for some values of the couplings and initial conditions these compactification regimes can coexist with isotropizing solutions.

Effects of spatial curvature and anisotropy on the asymptotic regimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In this paper we address two important issues which could affect reaching the exponential and Kasner asymptotes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet cosmologies -- spatial curvature and anisotropy in both three- and extra-dimensional subspaces. In the first part of the paper we consider cosmological evolution of spaces being the product of two isotropic and spatially curved subspaces. It is demonstrated that the dynamics in $D=2$ (the number of extra dimensions) and $D \geqslant 3$ is different. It was already known that for the $Λ$-term case there is a regime with "stabilization" of extra dimensions, where the expansion rate of the three-dimensional subspace as well as the scale factor (the "size") associated with extra dimensions reach constant value. This regime is achieved if the curvature of the extra dimensions is negative. We demonstrate that it take place only if the number of extra dimensions is $D \geqslant 3$. In the second part of the paper we study the influence of initial anisotropy. Our study reveals that the transition from Gauss-Bonnet Kasner regime to anisotropic exponential expansion (with expanding three and contracting extra dimensions) is stable with respect to breaking the symmetry within both three- and extra-dimensional subspaces. However, the details of the dynamics in $D=2$ and $D \geqslant 3$ are different. Combining the two described affects allows us to construct a scenario in $D \geqslant 3$, where isotropisation of outer and inner subspaces is reached dynamically from rather general anisotropic initial conditions.

Asymptotic cosmological regimes in scalar-torsion gravity with a perfect fluid

We consider cosmological dynamics of nonminimally coupled scalar field in the scalar-torsion gravity in the presence of a hydrodynamical matter. Potential of the scalar field have been chosen as power-law with negative index, this type of potentials is usually used in quintessence scenarios. We identify several asymptotic regimes, including de Sitter, kinetic dominance, kinetic tracker and tracker solution and study conditions for their existence and stability. We show that for each combination of coupling constant and potential power index one of regimes studied in the present paper is stable to the future.

Friedmann dynamics recovered from compactified Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet cosmology

In this paper cosmological dynamics in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a perfect fluid source in arbitrary dimension is studied. A systematic analysis is performed for the case that the theory does not admit maximally symmetric solutions. Considering two independent scale factors, namely one for the three dimensional space and one for the extra dimensional space, is found that a regime exists where the two scale factors tend to a constant value via damped oscillations for not too negative pressure of the fluid, so that asymptotically the evolution of the $(3+1)$-dimensional Friedmann model with perfect fluid is recovered. At last, it is worth emphasizing that the present numerical results strongly support a 't Hooft-like interpretation of the parameter $1/D$ (where $D$ is the number of extra dimensions) as a small expansion parameter in very much the same way as it happens in the large $N$ expansion of gauge theories with $1/N$. Indeed, the dependence on $D$ of many of the relevant physical quantities computed here manifests a clear WKB-like pattern, as expected on the basis of large $N$ arguments.
