Two-dimensional Born-Infeld gauge theory: spectrum, string picture and large-N phase transition

We analyze U(N) Born-Infeld gauge theory in two spacetime dimensions. We derive the exact energy spectrum on the circle and show that it reduces to N relativistic fermions on a dual space. This contrasts to the Yang-Mills case that reduces to nonrelativistic fermions. The theory admits a string theory interpretation, analogous to the one for ordinary Yang-Mills, but with higher order string interactions. We also demonstrate that the partition function on the sphere exhibits a large-N phase transition in the area and calculate the critical area. The limit in which the dimensionless coupling of the theory goes to zero corresponds to massless fermions, admits a perturbatively exact free string interpretation and exhibits no phase transition.

High spin limits and non-abelian T-duality

The action of the non-abelian T-dual of the WZW model is related to an appropriate gauged WZW action via a limiting procedure. We extend this type of equivalence to general sigma-models with non-abelian isometries and their non-abelian T-duals, focusing on Principal Chiral models. We reinforce and refine this equivalence by arguing that the non-abelian T-duals are the effective backgrounds describing states of an appropriate parent theory corresponding to divergently large highest weight representations. The proof involves carrying out a subtle limiting procedure in the group representations and relating them to appropriate limits in the corresponding backgrounds. We illustrate the general method by providing several non-trivial examples.

Solving field equations in non-isometric coset CFT backgrounds

The largest known class of gravitational backgrounds with an exact string theoretical description is based on coset G/H CFTs and the corresponding gauged WZW models. These backgrounds generically lack isometries and are quite complicated. Thus the corresponding field equations seem impossible to solve and their use in physical applications becomes problematic. We develop a systematic general method enabling us to overcome this problem using group theory. The method is inspired by observations made in some elementary geometric coset and coset CFTs, but its full power is apparent in non-abelian cases. We analyze exhaustively the coset SU(2)xSU(2)/SU(2) and explicitly solve the scalar wave equation of the corresponding gravitational background. We also examine the high spin limit and derive the effective geometry that consistently captures the corresponding sector in the theory.

General static spherically symmetric solutions in Horava gravity

We derive general static spherically symmetric solutions in the Horava theory of gravity with nonzero shift field. These represent "hedgehog" versions of black holes with radial "hair" arising from the shift field. For the case of the standard de Witt kinetic term (lambda =1) there is an infinity of solutions that exhibit a deformed version of reparametrization invariance away from the general relativistic limit. Special solutions also arise in the anisotropic conformal point lambda = 1/3.

Particle Kinematics in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We study the deformed kinematics of point particles in the Horava theory of gravity. This is achieved by considering particles as the optical limit of fields with a generalized Klein-Gordon action. We derive the deformed geodesic equation and study in detail the cases of flat and spherically symmetric (Schwarzschild-like) spacetimes. As the theory is not invariant under local Lorenz transformations, deviations from standard kinematics become evident even for flat manifolds, supporting superluminal as well as massive luminal particles. These deviations from standard behavior could be used for experimental tests of this modified theory of gravity.

Correlation breakdown, copula credit default models and arbitrage

The recent "correlation breakdown" in the modeling of credit default swaps, in which model correlations had to exceed 100% in order to reproduce market prices of supersenior tranches, is analyzed and argued to be a fundamental market inconsistency rather than an inadequacy of the specific model. As a consequence, markets under such conditions are exposed to the possibility of arbitrage. The general construction of arbitrage portfolios under specific conditions is presented.

On the Lieb-Liniger model in the infinite coupling constant limit

We consider the one-dimensional Lieb-Liniger model (bosons interacting via 2-body delta potentials) in the infinite coupling constant limit (the so-called Tonks-Girardeau model). This model might be relevant as a description of atomic Bose gases confined in a one-dimensional geometry. It is known to have a fermionic spectrum since the N-body wavefunctions have to vanish at coinciding points, and therefore be symmetrizations of fermionic Slater wavefunctions. We argue that in the infinite coupling constant limit the model is indistinguishable from free fermions, i.e., all physically accessible observables are the same as those of free fermions. Therefore, Bose-Einstein condensate experiments at finite energy that preserve the one-dimensional geometry cannot test any bosonic characteristic of such a model.

Noncommutative Wess-Zumino-Witten actions and their Seiberg-Witten invariance

We analyze the noncommutative two-dimensional Wess-Zumino-Witten model and its properties under Seiberg-Witten transformations in the operator formulation. We prove that the model is invariant under such transformations even for the noncritical (non chiral) case, in which the coefficients of the kinetic and Wess-Zumino terms are not related. The pure Wess-Zumino term represents a singular case in which this transformation fails to reach a commutative limit. We also discuss potential implications of this result for bosonization.

Noncommutative Fluids

We review the connection between noncommutative gauge theory, matrix models and fluid mechanical systems. The noncommutative Chern-Simons description of the quantum Hall effect and bosonization of collective fermion states are used as specific examples.

BPS Operators in N=4 SYM: Calogero Models and 2D Fermions

A connection between the gauge fixed dynamics of protected operators in superconformal Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions and Calogero systems is established. This connection generalizes the free Fermion description of the chiral primary operators of the gauge theory formed out of a single complex scalar to more general operators. In particular, a detailed analysis of protected operators charged under an su(1|1)contained in psu(2,2|4) is carried out and a class of operators is identified, whose dynamics is described by the rational super-Calogero model. These results are generalized to arbitrary BPS operators charged under an su(2|3) of the superconformal algebra. Analysis of the non-local symmetries of the super-Calogero model is also carried out, and it is shown that symmetry for a large class of protected operators is a contraction of the corresponding Yangian algebra to a loop algebra.

Bosonization in higher dimensions via noncommutative field theory

We propose the bosonization of a many-body fermion theory in D spatial dimensions through a noncommutative field theory on a (2D-1)-dimensional space. This theory leads to a chiral current algebra over the noncommutative space and reproduces the correct perturbative Hilbert space and excitation energies for the fermions. The validity of the method is demonstrated by bosonizing a two-dimensional gas of fermions in a harmonic trap.

The fermion density operator in the droplet bosonization picture

We derive the phase space particle density operator in the 'droplet' picture of bosonization in terms of the boundary operator. We demonstrate that it satisfies the correct algebra and acts on the proper Hilbert space describing the underlying fermion system, and therefore it can be used to bosonize any hamiltonian or related operator. As a demonstration we show that it reproduces the correct excitation energies for a system of free fermions with arbitrary dispersion relations.

Fractional quantum Hall effect on the two-sphere: a matrix model proposal

We present a Chern-Simons matrix model describing the fractional quantum Hall effect on the two-sphere. We demonstrate the equivalence of our proposal to particular restrictions of the Calogero-Sutherland model, reproduce the quantum states and filling fraction and show the compatibility of our result with the Haldane spherical wavefunctions.

Kac-Moody theories for colored phase space (quantum Hall) droplets

We derive the canonical structure and hamiltonian for arbitrary deformations of a higher-dimensional (quantum Hall) droplet of fermions with spin or color on a general phase space manifold. Gauge fields are introduced via a Kaluza-Klein construction on the phase space. The emerging theory is a nonlinear higher-dimensional generalization of the gauged Kac-Moody algebra. To leading order in h-bar this reproduces the edge state chiral Wess-Zumino-Witten action of the droplet.

Chiral actions from phase space (quantum Hall) droplets

We derive the hamiltonian and canonical structure for arbitrary deformations of a phase space (quantum Hall) droplet on a general manifold of any dimension. The derivation is based on a transformation that decouples the Casimirs of the density Poisson structure. The linearized theory reproduces the edge state chiral action of the droplets, while the nonlinear hamiltonian captures 1/N quantum corrections.

Calogero-Moser models with noncommutative spin interactions

We construct integrable generalizations of the elliptic Calogero-Sutherland-Moser model of particles with spin, involving noncommutative spin interactions. The spin coupling potential is a modular function and, generically, breaks the global spin symmetry of the model down to a product of U(1) phase symmetries. Previously known models are recovered as special cases.
