Off-stoichiometric variable doping for exceptional power factors in L2$_1$ Fe$_2$VAlM$_x$ (M=Ti, W) epitaxial thin films

We show that the addition of Ti or W to stoichiometric L2$_1$ Fe$_2$VAl thin films by sputter codeposition produces off stoichiometric thin film alloys with superior thermoelectric properties than their stoichiometric counterparts. Ti incorporation induces p-type semiconducting behavior, while W incorporation shifts the material toward n-type, hereby enabling simultaneous tuning of both carrier types within a single parent (Fe$_2$VAl) material system, making it highly desirable for thermoelectric devices. The introduction of both Ti and W partly substitutes V in the stoichiometric compound. The partial substitution of V in the stoichiometric alloy allows fine-tuning the band structure of the system and transport properties. With this approach we obtain exceptional maximum power factor values for p and n-type films of 1300 $\mu$W/m$\cdot$K$^2$ and 2100 $\mu$W/m$\cdot$K$^2$ ,respectively, yielding maximum figures of merit zT of 0.07 and 0.14, respectively.

Thermoelectric Performance Boost by Chemical Order in Epitaxial L2$_1$ (100) and (110) Oriented undoped Fe$_2$VAl Thin Films: An Experimental and Theoretical Study

This study demonstrates the direct correlation between the presence of the L2$_1$ ordered phase and the large enhancement in the thermoelectric performance of Fe$_2$VAl thin films deposited on MgO and Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates at temperatures varying between room temperature and 950$^{\circ}$C. We employ both experimental techniques and computational modeling to analyze the influence of crystallographic orientation and deposition temperature on the thermoelectric properties, including the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity. Our findings indicate that the presence of the L2$_1$ phase significantly enhances the power factor (PF) and figure of merit (zT), surpassing previously reported values for both bulk and thin film forms of Fe$_2$VAl, achieving a PF of 480 $\mu$W/m$\cdot$K$^2$ and a zT of 0.025.

Giant Magneto-refractive Effect in Second Harmonic Generation from Plasmonic Antennas in the Mid-infrared

Metallic nanostructures exhibit strong nonlinear-optical response at surface plasmon resonances, where the light-matter coupling efficiency is enhanced. An active modulation of this response can be realized by means of an external magnetic field. Here we utilize a nonlinear magneto-refractive effect in spintronic multilayer antennas to achieve a resonant 20\% modulation in second harmonic generation (SHG) in the mid-infrared. We discuss mechanisms of this modulation and show that it cannot be explained by an unequal enhancement of the electromagnetic field in the two spin states of the multilayer. Instead, we propose a novel contribution to the nonlinear susceptibility, which relies on the spin-dependent electron mean free path in metals. In contrast to magneto-optics in ferromagnets, our approach results in no shift of the resonance and thus ensures that the largest SHG and its strongest modulation are simultaneously observed.

Growth mode, magnetic and magneto-optical properties of pulsed-laser-deposited Au/Co/Au(111) trilayers

The growth mode, magnetic and magneto-optical properties of epitaxial Au/Co/Au(111) ultrathin trilayers grown by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) under ultra-high vacuum are presented. Sapphire wafers buffered with a single-crystalline Mo(110) bilayer were used as substrates. Owing to PLD-induced interfacial intermixing at the lower Co/Au(111) interface, a layer-by-layer growth mode is promoted. Surprisingly, despite this intermixing, ferromagnetic behavior is found at room temperature for coverings starting at 1 atomic layer (AL). The films display perpendicular magnetization with anisotropy constants reduced by 50% compared to TD-grown or electrodeposited films, and with a coercivity more than one order of magnitude lower ($\lesssim$ 5 mT). The magneto-optical (MO) response in the low Co thickness range is dominated by Au/Co interface contributions. For thicknesses starting at 3 AL Co, the MO response has a linear dependence with the Co thickness, indicative of a continuous-film-like MO behavior.
