Updated limits on extra dimensions through torsion and LHC data

It is well known that inclusion of torsion in the gravitational formalism, leads to four-fermion interactions. Although the coupling constant of this interaction is strongly suppressed in four dimensions, its value is enhanced in models with $n$ extra dimensions. In this context, we reinterpret the recent limits established by LHC experiments to four-fermion contact interactions, to set bounds on the size of the extra dimensions. For $n=2$, the limits are comparable to those in the literature, while for $n\ge 3$ the volume of the extra dimensions is strongly constrained.

The Effect of Composite Resonances on Higgs decay into two photons

In scenarios of strongly coupled electroweak symmetry breaking, heavy composite particles of different spin and parity may arise and cause observable effects on signals that appear at loop levels. The recently observed process of Higgs to $γγ$ at the LHC is one of such signals. We study the new constraints that are imposed on composite models from $H\to γγ$, together with the existing constraints from the high precision electroweak tests. We use an effective chiral Lagrangian to describe the effective theory that contains the Standard Model spectrum and the extra composites below the electroweak scale. Considering the effective theory cutoff at $Λ= 4πv \sim 3 $ TeV, consistency with the $T$ and $S$ parameters and the newly observed $H\to γγ$ can be found for a rather restricted range of masses of vector and axial-vector composites from $1.5$ TeV to $1.7$ TeV and $1.8$ TeV to $1.9$ TeV, respectively, and only provided a non-standard kinetic mixing between the $W^{3}$ and $B^{0}$ fields is included.

Fermion Masses Through Condensation in Spacetimes with Torsion

In this paper we argue the possibility that fermion masses, in particular quarks, originate through the condensation of a fourth family that interacts with all of the quarks via a contact four-fermion term coming from the existence of torsion on the spacetime. Extra dimensions are considered to avoid the hierarchy problem.

Higgs Boson Phenomenology in a Simple Model with Vector Resonances

In this paper we consider a simple scenario where the Higgs boson and two vector resonances are supposed to arise from a new strong interacting sector. We use the ATLAS measurements of the dijet spectrum to set limits on the masses of the resonances. Additionally we compute the Higgs boson decay to two photons and found, when compare to the Standard Model prediction, a small excess which is compatible with ATLAS measurements. Finally we make prediction for Higgs-strahlung processes for the LHC running at 14 TeV.

Axigluon Phenomenology using ATLAS dijet data

In recent years, there has been a renewed interest on axigluons as part of a possible extension of strong interactions at high energies. In this work, we use recent ATLAS measurements of the dijet spectrum in order to set limits on the axigluon mass and coupling to quarks. We pay special attention to the methodology used to extract the resonant contribution from theoretical simulations. Finally, we present some predictions for the next LHC run at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV.

On the Quantum Chromodynamics of a Massive Vector Field in the Adjoint Representation

In this paper, we explore the possibility of constructing the quantum chromodynamics of a massive color-octet vector field without introducing higher structures like extended gauge symmetries, extra dimensions or scalar fields. We show that gauge invariance is not enough to constraint the couplings. Nevertheless the requirement of unitarity fixes the values of the coupling constants, which otherwise would be arbitrary. Additionally, it opens a new discrete symmetry which makes the coloron stable and avoid its resonant production at a collider. On the other hand, a judicious definition of the gauge fixing terms modifies the propagator of the massive field making it well-behaved in the ultra-violet limit. The relation between our model and the more general approach based on extended gauge symmetries is also discussed.

Quark masses and mixings in the RS1 model with a condensing 4th generation

We study the hierarchy of quark masses and mixings in a model based on a 5-dimensional spacetime with constant curvature of Randall-Sundrum type with two branes, where the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking is caused dynamically by the condensation of a 4th generation of quarks, due to underlying physics from the 5D bulk and the first KK gluons. We first study the hierarchy of quark masses and mixings that can be obtained from purely adjusting the profile localizations, finding that realistic masses are not reproduced unless non trivial hierarchies of underlying 4-fermion interactions from the bulk are included. Then we study global U(1) symmetries that can be imposed in order to obtain non-symmetric modified Fritzsch-like textures in the mass matrices that reproduce reasonably well quark masses and CKM mixings.

The Axigluon, a Four-Site Model and the Top Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry at the Tevatron

Very recently, it has been shown by other authors that the CDF measurement of the top quark forward-backward asymmetry can be explained by means of a heavy and broad axigluon. In order to work, this mechanism needs that the axigluon coupling to the top quark must be different than the coupling to light quarks and both must be stronger than the one predicted in classical axigluon models. In this paper, we argue that this kind of axigluon can be accommodated in an extended chiral color model we proposed previously. Additionally, we show that the desired features can be derived from a simple four-site model with delocalized fermions.

Constraining Spin-One Color-Octet Resonances Using CDF and ATLAS Data

In this paper, we study the production of spin-one color-octet resonances (colorons) at hadron colliders in a model independent way. We use dijets data measured by CDF (at \sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV and L=1.13$ 1/pb) and ATLAS (at \sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and L=315 1/nb) collaborations at the Tevatron and the LHC respetively to impose limits on the coupling of colorons to fermions. We show that CDF data still produce the more stringent limits on the coloron coupling constant.

Two Composite Higgs Doublets: Is it the Low Energy Limit of a Natural Strong Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Sector ?

In this paper, we construct an effective model that describes the electroweak symmetry breaking sector by means of composite Higgs-like scalars, following the ideas of Minimal Walking Technicolor (MWT). We argue that, because of the general failure of Extended Technicolor (ETC) to explain the mass of the top quark, it is necessary to introduce two composite Higgs bosons: one of them originated by a MWT-ETC sector and the other one produced by a Topcolor sector. We focus on the phenomenological differences between the light composite Higgs present in our model and the fundamental Higgs boson predicted by the Standard Model and their production at the LHC. We show that in this scheme the main production channel of the lighter Higgs boson are the associated production with a gauge boson and $WW$ fusion but not the gluon-gluon fusion channel which is substantially suppressed.

Kaluza-Klein theory in the limit of large number of extra dimensions

The Kaluza-Klein compactification in the limit of large number of extra dimensions is studied. Starting point is the Einstein-Hilbert action plus cosmological constant in 4+D dimensions. It is shown that in the large D limit the effective four dimensional cosmological constant is of order 1/D whereas the size of the extra dimensions remains finite. A 't Hooft like large D expansion of the effective Lagrangian for the Kaluza-Klein scalar and gauge fields arising from the dimensional reduction is considered. It is shown that the propagator of the scalar field associated to the determinant of the metric of the extra dimensions is strongly suppressed. This is an interesting result as in standard Kaluza-Klein theory this scalar degree of freedom is responsible for the constraint on the gauge fields which makes it impossible to recover the usual Yang-Mills equations. Moreover in the large D limit it turns out that the ultraviolet divergences due to the interactions between gauge and scalar fields are softened.

Effective Description of a Gauge Field and a Tower of Massive Vector Resonances

In this work we review an effective description of the interaction of a gauge field with a tower of massive vector fields by introducing a non-diagonal mass matrix in a gauge invariant way. Particular cases of the method with only one vector resonance have been used by the author elsewhere, nevertheless in this paper the method is developed in a general way and and we proof its main features for an arbitrary number of vector resonances. Additionally, we show how to couple the vector resonances with fermions. We find that the method can be useful in order to describe the low energy phenomenology of scenarios like Kaluza-Klein resonances of usual gauge bosons or Technicolor vector resonances and detailed examples are provided.

Axigluon Couplings in the Presence of Extra Color-Octet Spin-One Fields

In this paper, we study how the interaction of the axigluon with quarks is modified when we introduce new color-octet spin-one fields in a chiral color model. We show that in this case the strength of this interaction is not completely determined by the gauge symmetry any more and can be significantly weaker than the one predicted in the original chiral color model. In this way, we reinterpret the non-observability of the axigluon at the Tevatron, not as a limit on the axigluon mass, but as a limit on the strength of the axigluon coupling to quarks.

A new signature for color octet pseudoscalars at the LHC

Color octet (pseudo)scalars, if they exist, will be copiously produced at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). However, their detection can become a very challenging task. In particular, if their decay into a pair of top quarks is kinematically forbidden, the main decay channel would be into two jets, with a very large background. In this Brief Report we explore the possibility of using anomaly-induced decays of the color octet pseudoscalars into gauge bosons to find them at the LHC.

Consequences of Partial Vector Meson Dominance for the Phenomenology of Colored Technihadrons

In this paper we address the question: ``do the limits on technirho production at the Tevatron mean what we think they do ?'' These limits are based on calculations that rely on Vector Meson Dominance (VMD). VMD was invented in order to describe the interaction of electrons with hadrons (the rho meson and pions). The method has been used also as a tool in the study of Technicolor phenomenology. Nevertheless there are evidences in the sense that, even in its original, context VMD is not completely realized. In this work we investigate the consequences of a deviation from complete VMD for the phenomenology of colored technihadrons. We focus specially on the production of the color octet technirho and color triplet technipions. We found that a relative small direct coupling of the proto-technirho to quarks is enough to suppress or even eliminate the interaction among quarks and the physical technirho. On the other hand, it is possible to suppress the coupling of the physical technirho to technipions but in this case a large interaction among the technipions and the proto-gluon must be introduced. The consequences for the limits on the mass of the color octet technirho are also investigated.

A Remark on Vector Meson Dominance, Universality and the Pion Form Factor

In this paper, we address the universality problem in the mass-mixing representation of vector meson dominance. First we stress the importance of using physical (mass eigenstate) fields in order to get the correct $q^2$ dependence of the pion form factor. Then we show that, when a direct coupling of the (proto-)photon to the pions is included, it is not necessary to invoke universality. Our method is similar to the delocalization idea in some deconstrunction theories.

Associate Higgs and Gauge Boson Production at Hadron Colliders in a Model with Vector Resonances

Motivated by new models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking that predict a light composite higgs boson, we build an effective lagrangian which describes the Standard Model (with a light Higgs) and vector resonances. We compute the cross section for the associate production of a higgs and a gauge boson. For some values of model parameters we find that the cross section is significantly enhanced with respect to the Standard Model. This enhancement is similar at the LHC and the Tevatron for the same range of resonance mass.
