Holographic Spread Complexity at Fixed Charge: Routhians, Branes and Strings

Holographic spread (Krylov) complexity relates the growth of a boundary state's complexity to the proper radial momentum of a probe falling into the bulk. Unitary evolution makes spread complexity an even function of time. We show that this requirement fails whenever a probe carries a conserved Noether charge and is described by its unreduced Lagrangian. The cure is simple and universal: passing to the Routhian of the fixed-charge sector restores the correct short-time behaviour of the complexity. We establish this prescription from first principles and test it across an extensive family of probes: charged particles, non-BPS D-branes with detuned tension and charge, branes excited along internal isometries, worldvolume gauge fields, a fluctuating D0-brane in AdS$_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$ and fundamental strings combining winding with rotation in AdS$_5\times \mathrm{S}^5$ complemented by further examples in AdS$_3\times \mathrm{S}^3\times T^4$, ABJM, and the charged Anabalón-Ross background. We then translate these results into Krylov-chain data, extracting Lanczos coefficients and Krylov-number correlators, and propose that complexity for charged, extended probes organises naturally into collective, fluctuation, charge and mixed contributions. This decomposition opens a concrete path toward a genuinely field-theoretic, multi-seed construction of holographic complexity.

Size Operator and Spectral Clustering in the Two Coupled SYK Model

At large $N$, two coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models realize an eternal traversable wormhole with a discrete spectrum. We show that at finite $N$ the spectrum organizes into clusters labeled by operator size. Low-size clusters evolve into the conformal towers and define a weak-ergodicity-breaking subspace responsible for the long-lived wormhole revival dynamics. Moreover, the competition between size energy and size entropy provides a microscopic interpretation of the wormhole-black hole transition. These results reveal operator size as the bridge between the finite-$N$ spectrum and the emergent gravitational physics at large $N$.

Holographic Spread Complexity from Branes and Strings

We study Krylov spread complexity in holographic theories using genuine string-theory probes. Building on the proposal that the growth rate of spread complexity is measured by a proper momentum in the bulk, we embed the falling-particle picture in top-down examples. We first analyse a D0 brane in the type IIA AdS$_4\times {\mathbb{CP}}^3$ background dual to ABJM theory, identifying it with a dressed monopole operator in the boundary CFT. For purely radial motion the proper-momentum prescription reproduces the expected quadratic growth of the complexity. When the probe carries momentum along an isometric direction, the naive prescription gives an apparent conflict with the short-time behaviour required of Krylov complexity. We propose that the correct fixed-charge description is obtained by Legendre transforming to the Routhian. We support the D0-brane interpretation through the regulated monopole two-point function, whose survival amplitude determines the Krylov moments, and we show that radial fluctuations give controlled corrections to the effective energy governing the complexity growth. We then extend the analysis to a rotating non-BPS D3 brane in AdS$_5\times S^5$, where angular momentum produces a centrifugal barrier and a sharp condition for radial in-fall. In the falling regime the Routhian prescription again gives the correct short-time behaviour. Finally, we consider a wound fundamental string in AdS$_5\times S^5$, which reduces to an effective massive falling particle. This clarifies the distinction between Noether charges, which require a fixed-charge Routhian treatment, and winding data, which enter through the effective mass. Our results provide a string-theoretic realisation of holographic spread complexity for point-like and extended excitations, making manifest their dependence on field theory parameters.

Holographic Floquet states in low dimensions (II)

We continue the study in [1] of a strongly coupled (2+1)-dimensional gauge theory subject to an external rotating electric field. The system is modelled holographically as a D3/D5 probe intersection. We add temperature to the D3 background and analyze the phase diagram. Also here, the conductive phase extends down to vanishing external electric field at discrete values of the frequencies where vector meson Floquet condensates form. For all temperatures, at given intercalated frequencies, we find new dual states that we name Floquet suppression points, where the vacuum polarization vanishes even in the presence of an electric field. From the data we infer that these states exist both in the conductive and insulating phases. In the massless limit we find a linear and instantaneous conductivity law, recovering known general results in 2+1 dimensions. We also examine the photovoltaic AC and DC current as the response to an oscillating probe electric field and see that rising the temperature suppresses the photovoltaic Hall current. All the results obtained carry over qualitatively unaltered to the case of D3/D7.

Chiral symmetry breaking and restoration by helical magnetic fields in AdS/CFT

We study the effects of helical magnetic fields on chiral symmetry breaking within the AdS/QCD framework using the D3/D7-brane model. By analyzing the brane embeddings, we obtain three types of massless solutions, corresponding to three phases with different behavior in the dual field theory. From the study of quark condensates, free energy, and electric currents, we find that helical magnetic fields can counteract uniform-field-induced symmetry breaking, driving the system towards symmetry restoration. We also find an effect analog to the chiral magnetic effect whereby the current is parallel to the magnetic field. We further study the massive case, and find that the helical configuration is less effective in erasing the first order phase transition that is present in the case of a constant magnetic field.

Hot wormholes and chaos dynamics in a two-coupled SYK model

We study the dynamics of chaos across the phase transition in a 2-coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, with a focus on the unstable "hot wormhole" phase. Using the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, we employ two non-equilibrium protocols that allow access to this phase, which is inaccessible through equilibrium simulations: one involves cooling the system via a coupling to a thermal bath, while in the other we periodically drive the coupling parameter between the two sides. We numerically compute the Lyapunov exponents of the hot wormhole for the two cases. Our results uncover a rich structure within this phase, including both thermal and non-thermal solutions. These behaviors are analyzed in detail, with partial insights provided by the Schwarzian approximation, which captures certain but not all aspects of the observed dynamics.

Floquet SYK wormholes

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of two coupled SYK models, conjectured to be holographically dual to an eternal traversable wormhole in AdS$_2$. We consider different periodic drivings of the parameters of the system. We analyze the energy flows in the wormhole and black hole phases of the model as a function of the driving frequency. Our numerical results show a series of resonant frequencies in which the energy absorption and heating are enhanced significantly and the transmission coefficients drop, signalling a closure of the wormhole. These frequencies correspond to part of the conformal tower of states and to the boundary graviton of the dual gravitational theory. Furthermore, we provide evidence supporting the existence of a hot wormhole phase between the black hole and wormhole phases. When driving the strength of the separate SYK terms we find that the transmission can be enhanced by suitably tuning the driving.

Holographic Floquet states in low dimensions (I)

We study the response of a (2+1)-dimensional gauge theory to an external rotating electric field. In the strong coupling regime such system is formulated holographically in a top-down model constructed by intersecting D3- and D5-branes along 2+1 dimensions, in the quenched approximation, in which the D5-brane is a probe in the AdS_5 x S^5 geometry. The system has a non-equilibrium phase diagram with conductive and insulator phases. The external driving induces a rotating current due to vacuum polarization (in the insulator phase) and to Schwinger effect (in the conductive phase). For some particular values of the driving frequency the external field resonates with the vector mesons of the model and a rotating current can be produced even in the limit of vanishing driving field. These features are in common with the (3+1) dimensional setup based on the D3-D7 brane model and hint on some interesting universality. We also compute the conductivities paying special attention to the photovoltaic induced Hall effect, which is only present for massive charged carriers. In the vicinity of the Floquet condensate the optical Hall coefficient persists at zero driving field, signalling time reversal symmetry breaking.

Flavored anisotropic black holes

We construct a black hole geometry dual to a (2+1)-dimensional defect in an ambient (3+1)-dimensional gauge theory at non-zero temperature and quark density. The geometry is a solution to the equations of motion of type IIB supergravity with brane sources, a low energy limit of an intersection of stacks of color D3-branes and flavor D5-branes. We consider the case in which the number of D5-branes is large and they can be homogeneously distributed along the directions orthogonal to the defect, creating in this way a multilayer structure. The quark density is generated by exciting a gauge field in the worldvolume of the dynamic brane sources. We study the thermodynamics of the anisotropic black hole and compute the energy density of the dual theory, as well as the pressures and speeds of sound along the directions parallel and orthogonal to the defect. We also calculate transport coefficients in the shear channel, quark-antiquark potentials, and the entanglement entropies for slab subregions. These analyses give us a good overview on how the degrees of freedom are spread, entangled, and behave in this unquenched system in the deconfining phase at strong coupling.

Risking your NEC

Energy conditions, especially the null energy condition (NEC), are generically imposed on solutions to retain a physically sensible classical field theory and they also play an important role in the AdS/CFT duality. Using this duality, we study non-trivially deformed strongly coupled quantum field theories at large-$N_c$. The corresponding dual classical gravity constructions entail the use of radially non-monotonic D-brane distributions. The gravity backgrounds are supersymmetric and hence perturbatively stable, and do not possess curvature singularities. There are no short-cuts through the bulk spacetime for signal propagation which assures that the field theory duals are causal. Nevertheless, some of our solutions violate the NEC in the gravity dual. In these cases the non-monotonicity of the D-brane distributions is reflected in the properties of the renormalization group flow: none of the $c$-functions proposed in the literature are monotonic. This further suggests that the non-monotonic behavior of the $c$-functions within previously known anisotropic backgrounds does not originate from the breaking of Lorentz invariance. We surmise that NEC violations induced by quantum corrections also need to be considered in holographic duals, but can be studied already at the classical level.

Holographic spontaneous anisotropy

We construct a family of holographic duals to anisotropic states in a strongly coupled gauge theory. On the field theory side the anisotropy is generated by giving a vacuum expectation value to a dimension three operator. We obtain our gravity duals by considering the geometry corresponding to the intersection of D3- and D5- branes along 2+1 dimensions. Our backgrounds are supersymmetric and solve the fully backreacted equations of motion of ten-dimensional supergravity with smeared D5-brane sources. In all cases the geometry flows to $AdS_{5}\times {\mathbb S}^5$ in the UV, signaling an isotropic UV fixed point of the dual field theory. In the IR, depending on the parameters of the solution, we find two possible behaviors: an isotropic fixed point or a geometry with anisotropic Lifshitz-like scaling symmetry. We study several properties of the solutions, including the entanglement entropy of strips. We show that any natural extension of existing $c$-functions will display non-monotonic behavior, conforming with the presence of new degrees of freedom only at intermediate energy scales.

Holographic fundamental matter in multilayered media

We describe a strongly coupled layered system in 3+1 dimensions by means of a top-down D-brane construction. Adjoint matter is encoded in a large-$N_c$ stack of D3-branes, while fundamental matter is confined to $(2+1)$-dimensional defects introduced by a large-$N_f$ stack of smeared D5-branes. To the anisotropic Lifshitz-like background geometry, we add a single flavor D7-brane treated in the probe limit. Such bulk setup corresponds to a partially quenched approximation for the dual field theory. The holographic model sheds light on the anisotropic physics induced by the layered structure, allowing one to disentangle flavor physics along and orthogonal to the layers as well as identifying distinct scaling laws for various dynamical quantities. We study the thermodynamics and the fluctuation spectrum with varying valence quark mass or baryon chemical potential. We also focus on the density wave propagation in both the hydrodynamic and collisionless regimes where analytic methods complement the numerics, while the latter provides the only resource to address the intermediate transition regime.

Supersymmetric probes in warped $AdS_6$

We consider defects in 5d field theories corresponding to higher-rank generalizations of the $E_{N_f+1}$ theories; holographically dual to the Brandhuber-Oz background in type I' String Theory. We concentrate on codimension 2 and 1 defects, corresponding, respectively, to 3d and 4d defect Quantum Field Theories. We study holographically such defect theories by considering supersymmetric probe D4- and D6-branes in the $AdS_6$, whose fluctuations allow us to study the spectrum of mesonic operators of the defect theories. In the case of D4-branes, we also consider wrappings in the internal space which can be regarded as generalizations of the configurations capturing the antisymmetric Wilson loop.

Low-energy modes in anisotropic holographic fluids

In this work we will study the low-energy collective behavior of spatially anisotropic dense fluids in four spacetime dimensions. We will embed a massless flavor D7-brane probe in a generic geometry which has a metric possessing anisotropy in the spatial components. We work out generic formulas of the low-energy excitation spectra and two-point functions for charged excitations at finite baryon chemical potential. In addition, we specialize to a certain Lifshitz geometry and discuss in great detail the scaling behavior of several different quantities.

Information flows in strongly coupled ABJM theory

We use holographic methods to characterize the RG flow of quantum information in a Chern-Simons theory coupled to massive fermions. First, we use entanglement entropy and mutual information between strips to derive the dimension of the RG-driving operator and a monotonic c-function. We then display a scaling regime where, unlike in a CFT, the mutual information between strips changes non-monotonically with strip width, vanishing in both IR and UV but rising to a maximum at intermediate scales. The associated information transitions also contribute to non-monotonicity in the conditional mutual information which characterizes the independence of neighboring strips after conditioning on a third. Finally, we construct a measure of extensivity which tests to what extent information that region A shares with regions B and C is additive. In general, mutual information is super-extensive in holographic theories, and we might expect super-extensivity to be maximized in CFTs since they are scale-free. Surprisingly, our massive theory is more super-extensive than a CFT in a range of scales near the UV limit, although it is less super-extensive than a CFT at all lower scales. Our analysis requires the full ten-dimensional dual gravity background, and the extremal surfaces computing entanglement entropy explore all of these dimensions.

Gravity dual of a multilayer system

We construct a gravity dual to a system with multiple (2+1)-dimensional layers in a (3+1)-dimensional ambient theory. Following a top-down approach, we generate a geometry corresponding to the intersection of D3- and D5-branes along 2+1 dimensions. The D5-branes create a codimension one defect in the worldvolume of the D3-branes and are homogeneously distributed along the directions orthogonal to the defect. We solve the fully backreacted ten-dimensional supergravity equations of motion with smeared D5-brane sources. The solution is supersymmetric, has an intrinsic mass scale, and exhibits anisotropy at short distances in the gauge theory directions. We illustrate the running behavior in several observables, such as Wilson loops, entanglement entropy, and within thermodynamics of probe branes.

Anisotropic D3-D5 black holes with unquenched flavors

We construct a black hole geometry generated by the intersection of $N_c$ color D3- branes and $N_f$ flavor D5-branes along a 2+1 dimensional subspace. Working in the Veneziano limit in which $N_f$ is large and distributing homogeneously the D5-branes in the internal space, we calculate the solution of the equations of motion of supergravity plus sources which includes the backreaction of the flavor branes. The solution is analytic and dual to a 2+1 dimensional defect in a 3+1 dimensional gauge theory, with $N_f$ massless hypermultiplets living in the defect. The smeared background we obtain can be regarded as the holographic realization of a multilayered system. We study the thermodynamics of the resulting spatially anisotropic geometry and compute the first and second order transport coefficients for perturbations propagating along the defect. We find that, in our system, the dynamics of excitations within a layer can be described by a stack of effective D2-branes.

Non-commutative massive unquenched ABJM

In this paper we study non-commutative massive unquenched Chern-Simons matter theory using its gravity dual. We construct this novel background by applying a TsT-transformation on the known parent commutative solution. We discuss several aspects of this solution to the Type IIA supergravity equations of motion and, amongst others, check that it preserves ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry. We then turn our attention to applications and investigate how dynamical flavor degrees of freedom affect numerous observables of interest. Our framework can be regarded as a key step towards the construction of holographic quantum Hall states on a non-commutative plane.
