Heralded single-photon source utilizing highly nondegenerate, spectrally factorable spontaneous parametric downconversion

We report on the generation of an indistinguishable heralded single-photon state, using highly nondegenerate spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC). Spectrally factorable photon pairs can be generated by incorporating a broadband pump pulse and a group-velocity matching (GVM) condition in a periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal. The heralding photon is in the near IR, close to the peak detection efficiency of off-the-shelf Si single-photon detectors; meanwhile, the heralded photon is in the telecom L-band where fiber losses are at a minimum. We observe spectral factorability of the SPDC source and consequently high purity (90%) of the produced heralded single photons by several different techniques. Because this source can also realize a high heralding efficiency (> 90%), it would be suitable for time-multiplexing techniques, enabling a pseudo-deterministic single-photon source, a critical resource for optical quantum information and communication technology.

How random are random numbers generated using photons?

Randomness is fundamental in quantum theory, with many philosophical and practical implications. In this paper we discuss the concept of algorithmic randomness, which provides a quantitative method to assess the Borel normality of a given sequence of numbers, a necessary condition for it to be considered random. We use Borel normality as a tool to investigate the randomness of ten sequences of bits generated from the differences between detection times of photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric downconversion. These sequences are shown to fulfil the randomness criteria without difficulties. As deviations from Borel normality for photon-generated random number sequences have been reported in previous work, a strategy to understand these diverging findings is outlined.

Classical to quantum transfer of optical vortices

We show that an optical vortex beam, implemented classically, can be transferred to the transverse amplitude of a heralded single photon. For this purpose we have relied on the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) for the generation of signal and idler photon pairs, using a pump in the form of a Bessel-Gauss (BG) beam with orbital angular momentum (specifically, with topological charge l = 1 and l = 2). We have designed our source so that it operates within the short SPDC crystal regime for which, the amplitude and phase of the pump may be transferred to a heralded single photon. In order to verify the vortex nature of our heralded single photon, we have shown that the conditional angular spectrum and the transverse intensity at the single-photon level match similar measurements carried out for the pump. In addition, we have shown that when our heralded single photon is diffracted through a triangular aperture, the far-field singlephoton transverse intensity exhibits the expected triangular arrangement of intensity lobes associated with the presence of orbital angular momentum.

Configurable spatio-temporal properties in a photon-pair source based on spontaneous four wave mixing with multiple transverse modes

We present an experimental and theoretical study of photon pairs generated by spontaneous four wave mixing (SFWM), based on birefringent phasematching, in a fiber which supports more than one transverse mode. We present SFWM spectra, obtained through single-channel and coincidence photon counting, which exhibit multiple peaks shown here to be the result of multiple SFWM processes associated with different combinations of transverse modes for the pump, signal, and idler waves.

Conversion efficiency in the process of co-polarized spontaneous four-wave mixing

We study the process of co-polarized spontaneous four-wave mixing in single-mode optical fibers, with an emphasis on an analysis of the conversion efficiency. We consider both the monochromatic-pumps and pulsed-pumps regimes, as well as both the degenerate-pumps and non-degenerate-pumps configurations. We present analytical expressions for the conversion efficiency, which are given in terms of double integrals. In the case of pulsed pumps we take these expressions to closed analytical form with the help of certain approximations. We present results of numerical simulations, and compare them to values obtained from our analytical expressions, for the conversion efficiency as a function of several key experimental parameters.

Observation of non-diffracting behavior at the single-photon level

We demonstrate the generation of non-diffracting heralded single photons, i.e. which are characterized by a single-photon transverse intensity distribution which remains essentially unchanged over a significant propagation distance. For this purpose we have relied on the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) for the generation of signal and idler photon pairs, where our SPDC crystal is pumped by a Bessel-Gauss (BG) beam. Our experiment shows that the well-understood non-diffracting behavior of a BG beam may be directly mapped to the signal-mode, single photons heralded by the detection of a single idler photon. In our experiment, the heralded single photon is thus arranged to be non-diffracting without the need for projecting its single-photon transverse amplitude, post-generation, in any manner.

Effects of crystal length on the angular spectrum of spontaneous parametric downconversion photon pairs

We present a theoretical and experimental analysis of the joint effects of the transverse electric field distribution and of the nonlinear crystal characteristics on the properties of photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC). While it is known that for a sufficiently short crystal the pump electric field distribution fully determines the joint signal-idler properties, for longer crystals the nonlinear crystal properties also play an important role. In this paper we present experimental measurements of the angular spectrum (AS) and of the conditional angular spectrum (CAS) of photon pairs produced by spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC), carried out through spatially-resolved photon counting. In our experiment we control whether or not the source operates in the short-crystal regime through the degree of pump focusing, and explicitly show how the AS and CAS measurements differ in these two regimes. Our theory provides an understanding of the boundary between these two regimes and also predicts the corresponding differing behaviors.

Theory of cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric downconversion

In this paper we study photon pairs generated in a nonlinear cavity, composed of a nonlinear crystal surrounded by mirrors, by the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion. We analyze two different regimes: singly-resonant cavities where the signal and idler modes are resonant, and doubly-resonant cavities where the pump mode is also resonant. We present analytic expressions for the joint spectral amplitude in these two cases, and study the reduction in emission bandwidth as the cavity coefficient finesse is increased. We also study the enhancement of the source brightness resulting from the presence of the cavity.

Time-Resolved Upconversion of Entangled Photon Pairs

In the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion, photons from a pump field are converted to signal and idler photon pairs in a nonlinear crystal. The reversed process, or upconversion of these pairs back to single photons in a second crystal, is also possible. Here, we present experimental measurements of the upconversion rate with a controlled time delay introduced between the signal and idler photons. As a function of delay, this rate presents a full width at half maximum of 27.9 fs under our experimental conditions, and we further demonstrate that group delay dispersion of the photon pairs broadens this width. These observations are in close agreement with our calculations, thus demonstrating an ultrafast, nonclassical correlation between the signal and idler waves.

Control, measurement and propagation of entanglement in photon pairs generated through type-II parametric downconversion

We present a study of the effects of dispersion on the properties of photon pairs generated by type-II, collinear spontaneous parametric downconversion. Specifically, we take into consideration the effects of a chirped pump, as well as of dispersive propagation of the photon pairs. We present expressions for the joint amplitude both in the spectral and temporal domains, as well as for the chronocyclic Wigner function of heralded single photons, which fully characterizes the single photon spectral (temporal) properties. On the one hand, we show that unwanted effects of pump chirp in terms of the heralded single photon duration can be suppressed for states designed to be factorable and spectrally elongated. On the other hand, we show that pump chirp constitutes an effective tool for the control of the degree of photon-pair entanglement. We show that when frequency-entangled photon pairs propagate through a dispersive medium, entanglement can "migrate" between the modulus and phase of the joint temporal amplitude.

Tailored photon pair preparation relying on full group velocity matching in fibre-based spontaneous four wave mixing

We study photon pair generation through scalar spontaneous four-wave mixing in single-mode fibre and for frequency-degenerate pumps; we concentrate on source geometries which fulfil full group velocity matching (GVM), i.e. where the pump, signal and idler propagate at identical group velocities. We discuss two experimental techniques which permit the attainment of full GVM, and discuss the resulting two-photon state properties. In particular, we show that full GVM can lead to sources which approach phasematching unconstrained by dispersion and therefore with a remarkably large bandwidth. We also discuss the generation of nearly-factorablestates as an application of full GVM.

Ultra-broadband photon pair preparation by spontaneous four wave mixing in dispersion-engineered optical fiber

We present a study of the spectral properties of photon pairs generated through the process of spontaneous four wave mixing (SFWM) in single mode fiber. Our analysis assumes narrowband pumps, which are allowed to be frequency-degenerate or non-degenerate. Based on this analysis, we derive conditions on the pump frequencies and on the fiber dispersion parameters which guarantee the generation of ultra-broadband photon pairs. Such photon pairs are characterized by: i) a very large degree of entanglement, and ii) a very high degree of temporal synchronization between the signal and idler photons. Through a numerical exercise, we find that the use of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) facilitates the fulfilment of the conditions for ultra-broadband photon pair generation; in particular, the spectral region in which emission occurs can be adjusted to particular needs through an appropriate choice of the PCF parameters. In addition, we present a novel quantum interference effect, resulting from indistinguishable pathways to the same outcome, which can occur when pumping a SFWM source with multiple spectral lines.

Heralded Generation of Ultrafast Single Photons in Pure Quantum States

We present an experimental demonstration of heralded single photons prepared in pure quantum states from a parametric downconversion source. It is shown that, through controlling the modal structure of the photon pair emission, one can generate pairs in factorable states and thence eliminate the need for spectral filters in multiple-source interference schemes. Indistinguishable heralded photons were generated in two independent spectrally engineered sources, and, by performing a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between them without spectral filters at a raw visibility of 94.4%, their purity was measured to be over 95%.

Parametric downconversion with optimized spectral properties in nonlinear photonic crystals

We study the joint spectral properties of photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal in a collinear, degenerate, type-II geometry. We show that the photonic crystal properties may be exploited to compensate for material dispersion and obtain photon pairs that are nearly factorable, in principle, for arbitrary materials and spectral regions, limited by the ability to fabricate the nonlinear crystal with the required periodic variation in the refractive indices for the ordinary and extraordinary waves.

Generation of Fourier transform limited heralded single photons

In this paper we study the spectral (temporal) properties of heralded single photon wavepackets, triggered by the detection of an idler photon in the process of parametric downconversion. The generated single photons are studied within the framework of the chronocyclic Wigner function, from which the single photon spectral width and temporal duration can be computed. We derive specific conditions on the two-photon joint spectral amplitude which result in both pure and Fourier- transform limited heralded single photons. Likewise, we present specific source geometries which lead to the fulfilment of these conditions and show that one of these geometries leads, for a given pump bandwidth, to the temporally shortest possible heralded single photon wavepackets.

Observation of ultra-broadband, beamlike parametric downconversion

We report spontaneous parametric downconversion having an unusually wide spectral bandwidth. A collinear type-1 phase-matching configuration is employed with degeneracy near the zero group velocity dispersion frequency. With a spectral width of 1080 nm and degenerate wavelength 1885 nm, the source also emits a high flux of photon pairs constrained to a cone of only 2 degree half-angle. A rigorous theoretical approach is developed that confirms the experimental observations. The source properties are consistent with an ultra-short photon-pair correlation time and, for a narrowband pump, extremely high-dimensional spectral entanglement.

Generation of Pure-State Single-Photon Wavepackets by Conditional Preparation Based on Spontaneous Parametric Downconversion

We study the conditional preparation of single photons based on parametric downconversion, where the detection of one photon from a given pair heralds the existence of a single photon in the conjugate mode. We derive conditions on the modal characteristics of the photon pairs, which ensure that the conditionally prepared single photons are quantum-mechanically pure. We propose specific experimental techniques that yield photon pairs ideally suited for single-photon conditional preparation.

Generation of two-photon states with arbitrary degree of entanglement via nonlinear crystal superlattices

We demonstrate a general method of engineering the joint quantum state of photon pairs produced in spontaneous parametric downconversion (PDC). The method makes use of a superlattice structure of nonlinear and linear materials, in conjunction with a broadband pump, to manipulate the group delays of the signal and idler photons relative to the pump pulse, and realizes a joint spectral amplitude with arbitrary degree of entanglement for the generated pairs. This method of group delay engineering has the potential of synthesizing a broad range of states including factorizable states crucial for quantum networking and states optimized for Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry. Experimental results for the latter case are presented, illustrating the principles of this approach.
