Gain-induced trapping of microcavity exciton polariton condensates

We have performed real and momentum space spectroscopy of exciton polariton condensates in a GaAs-based microcavity under non-resonant excitation with an intensity stabilized laser. An effective trapping mechanism is revealed, which is due to the stimulated scattering gain inside the finite excitation spot combined with the short lifetime. We observe several quantized modes while the lowest state shows Heisenberg-limited real and momentum space distributions. The experimental findings are qualitatively reproduced by an open dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation model.

Pulsed Nuclear Pumping and Spin Diffusion in a Single Charged Quantum Dot

We report the observation of a feedback process between the nuclear spins in a single charged quantum dot and its trion transition, driven by a periodic sequence of optical pulses. The pulse sequence intersperses off-resonant ultrafast pulses for coherent electron-spin rotation and resonant narrow-band optical pumping. The feedback manifests as a hysteretic triangle-like pattern in the free-induction-decay of the single spin. We present a simple, quasi-analytic numerical model to describe this observation, indicating that the feedback process results from the countering effects of optical nuclear pumping and nuclear spin-diffusion inside the quantum dot. This effect allows dynamic tuning of the electron Larmor frequency to a value determined by the pulse timing, potentially allowing more complex coherent control operations.

Higher order coherence of exciton-polariton condensates

The second and third order coherence functions $g^{(n)}(0) (n=2 {\rm and} 3)$ of an exciton-polariton condensate is measured and compared to the theory. Contrary to an ideal photon laser, deviation from unity in the second and third order coherence functions is observed, thus showing a bunching effect, but not the characteristics of a standard thermal state with $g^{(n)}(0)=n!$. The increase of bunching with the order of the coherence function, $g^{(3)}(0) > g^{(2)}(0)>1$, indicates that the polariton condensate is different from coherent state, number state and thermal state. The experimental results are in agreement with the theoretical model where polariton-polariton and polariton-phonon interactions are responsible for the loss of temporal coherence.

Indistinguishable photons from the resonance fluorescence of a single quantum dot in a microcavity

We demonstrate purely resonant continuous-wave optical laser excitation to coherently prepare an excitonic state of a single semiconductor quantum dot (QDs) inside a high quality pillar microcavity. As a direct proof of QD resonance fluorescence, the evolution from a single emission line to the characteristic Mollow triplet10 is observed under increasing pump power. By controlled utilization of weak coupling between the emitter and the fundamental cavity mode through Purcell-enhancement of the radiative decay, a strong suppression of pure dephasing is achieved, which reflects in close to Fourier transform-limited and highly indistinguishable photons with a visibility contrast of 90%. Our experiments reveal the model-like character of the coupled QD-microcavity system as a promising source for the generation of ideal photons at the quantum limit. From a technological perspective, the vertical cavity symmetry -- with optional dynamic tunability -- provides strongly directed light emission which appears very desirable for future integrated emitter devices.

Photon Antibunching from a Single Quantum Dot-Microcavity System in the Strong Coupling Regime

We observe antibunching in the photons emitted from a strongly-coupled single quantum dot and pillar microcavity in resonance. When the quantum dot was spectrally detuned from the cavity mode, the cavity emission remained antibunched, and also anticorrelated from the quantum dot emission. Resonant pumping of the selected quantum dot via an excited state enabled these observations by eliminating the background emitters that are usually coupled to the cavity. This device demonstrates an on-demand single photon source operating in the strong coupling regime, with a Purcell factor of 61 and quantum effciency of 97%
