Nonlinear wave superpositions and quasi-rectifiable Lie modules

This paper presents a study of nonlinear superpositions of Riemann wave solutions admitted by quasilinear hyperbolic first-order systems of partial differential equations. In particular, we focus on the Euler system and non-elastic wave superpositions that cannot be decomposed into pairwise independent interactions of waves. A crucial tool for this analysis is the property of quasi-rectifiability of the families of vector fields determined by this system. It imposes certain conditions to be satisfied by the commutators of these vector fields. They enable us to find a parametrization of the region of superpositions of Riemann waves which leads to a simplification of the initial system of equations. In order to identify non-elastic superpositions we prove that a class of Lie modules associated with them can be uniquely transformed into a real Lie algebra through an angle-preserving transformation. We are then able to select a particular basis of vector fields associated with a given module which ensures the property of quasi-rectifiability. That, in turn, allows us to construct the reduced form of the Euler system for which a non-elastic superposition of two Riemann waves is then derived analytically. A study of the geometry of the manifold of non-elastic wave superpositions in terms of deformations of submanifolds corresponding to the Lie algebras is performed. Finally, we adapt the described approach to the general form of a hydrodynamic-type system i.e., to arbitrary Lie modules of vector fields associated with such a system, providing the criteria for their quasi-rectifiability. A geometric interpretation of non-elastic wave superpositions in this system is given.

On Riemann wave superpositions obtained from the Euler system

The paper contains an analysis of the conditions for the existence of elastic versus non-elastic wave superpositions governed by the Euler system in (1+1)-dimensions. A review of recently obtained results is presented, including the introduction of the notion of quasi-rectifiability of vector fields and its application to both elastic and non-elastic wave superpositions. It is shown that the smallest real Lie algebra containing vector fields associated with the waves admitted by the Euler system is isomorphic to an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra which is the semi-direct sum of an Abelian ideal and the three-dimensional real Lie algebra. The maximal Lie module corresponding to the Euler system can be transformed, by an angle preserving transformation, to this algebra which is quasi-rectifiable and describes the behavior of wave superpositions. Based on these facts, we are able to find a parametrization of the region of non-elastic wave superpositions which allows for the construction of the reduced form of the Euler system.

On k-wave solutions of quasilinear systems of partial differential equations

In this paper, we establish a relation between two seemingly unrelated concepts for solving first-order hyperbolic quasilinear systems of partial differential equations in many dimensions. These concepts are based on a variant of the conditional symmetry method and on the generalized method of characteristics. We present the outline of recent results on multiple Riemann wave solutions of these systems. An auxiliary result concerning a modification of the Frobenius theorem for integration is used. We apply this result in order to show that the conditional symmetry method can deliver larger classes of multiple Riemann wave solutions, through a simpler procedure, than the one obtained from the generalized method of characteristics. We demonstrate that solutions can be interpreted physically as a superposition of k single waves. These theoretical considerations are illustrated by examples of hydrodynamic-type systems in (n+1) dimensions.

The Lie algebra of the lowest transitively differential group of degree three

We investigate the real Lie algebra of first-order differential operators with polynomial coefficients, which is subject to the following requirements. (1) The Lie algebra should admit a basis of differential operators with homogeneous polynomial coefficients of degree up to and including three. (2) The generator of the algebra must include the translation operators $\partial_k$ for all the variables $x_1$,...,$x_k$. (3) The Lie algebra is the smallest indecomposable Lie algebra satisfying (1) and (2). It turns out to be a 39-dimensional Lie algebra in six variables ($k=6$) and the construction of this algebra is also the simplest possible case in the general construction of the Lie algebras of the transitively differential groups introduced by Guillemin and Sternberg in 1964 involving the coefficients of degree 3. Those algebras and various subalgebras have similarities with algebras related to different applications in physics such as those of the Schrödinger, Conformal and Galilei transformation groups with and without central extension. The paper is devoted to the presentation of the structure and different decompositions of the Lie algebra under investigation. It is also devoted to the presentation of relevant Lie subalgebras and the construction of their Casimir invariants using different methods. We will rely, in particular, on differential operator realizations, symbolic computation packages, the Berezin bracket and virtual copies of the Lie algebras.

Recurrence relations and general solution of the exceptional Hermite equation

Exceptional orthogonal Hermite and Laguerre polynomials have been linked to the k-step extension of harmonic and singular oscillators. The exceptional polynomials allow the existence of different supercharges from the Darboux-Crum and Krein-Adler constructions of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. They also allow the existence of different types of ladder relations and their associated recurrence relations. The existence of such relations is a unique property of these polynomials. Those relations have been used to construct 2D models which are superintegrable, and display an interesting spectrum, degeneracies and finite-dimensional unitary representations. In previous works, only the physical or polynomial part of the spectrum is discussed. It is known that the general solutions are associated with other types of recurrence/ladder relations. We plan to discuss in detail the case of the exceptional Hermite polynomials $X_2^{(1)}$ and to explicitly present new chains obtained by acting with different types of ladder operators. We will exploit a recent result by one of the authors [32], where the general analytic solution was constructed and connected with the non-degenerate confluent Heun equation. The analogue Rodrigues formulas for the general solution are constructed. The set of finite states from which the other states can be obtained algebraically is not unique but the vanishing arrow and diagonal arrow from the diagram of the 2-chain representations can be used to obtain minimal sets. These Rodrigues formulas are then exploited, not only to construct the states, polynomial and non-polynomial, in a purely algebraic way, but also to obtain coefficients from the action of ladder operators also in an algebraic manner based on further commutation relations between monomials of the generators.

Minimal surfaces associated with orthogonal polynomials

This paper is devoted to a study of the connection between the immersion functions of two-dimensional surfaces in Euclidean or hyperbolic spaces and classical orthogonal polynomials. After a brief description of the soliton surfaces approach defined by the Enneper-Weierstrass formula for immersion and the solutions of the Gauss-Weingarten equations for moving frames, we derive the three-dimensional numerical representation for these polynomials. We illustrate the theoretical results for several examples, including the Bessel, Legendre, Laguerre, Chebyshev and Jacobi functions. In each case, we generate a numerical representation of the surface using the Mathematica symbolic software.

Invariant solutions of a nonlinear wave equation with a small dissipation obtained via approximate symmetries

In this paper, it is shown how a combination of approximate symmetries of a nonlinear wave equation with small dissipations and singularity analysis provides exact analytic solutions. We perform the analysis using the Lie symmetry algebra of this equation and identify the conjugacy classes of the one-dimensional subalgebras of this Lie algebra. We show that the subalgebra classification of the integro-differential form of the nonlinear wave equation is much larger than the one obtained from the original wave equation. A systematic use of the symmetry reduction method allows us to find new invariant solutions of this wave equation.

Veronese subsequent analytic solutions of the $\mathbb{C}P^{2s}$ sigma model equations described via Krawtchouk polynomials

The objective of this paper is to establish a new relationship between the Veronese subsequent analytic solutions of the Euclidean $\mathbb{C}P^{2s}$ sigma model in two dimensions and the orthogonal Krawtchouk polynomials. We show that such solutions of the $\mathbb{C}P^{2s}$ model, defined on the Riemann sphere and having a finite action, can be explicitly parametrised in terms of these polynomials. We apply the obtained results to the analysis of surfaces associated with $\mathbb{C}P^{2s}$ sigma models, defined using the generalized Weierstrass formula for immersion. We show that these surfaces are spheres immersed in the $\mathfrak{su}(2s+1)$ Lie algebra, and express several other geometrical characteristics in terms of the Krawtchouk polynomials. Finally, a new connection between the $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ spin-s representation and the $\mathbb{C}P^{2s}$ model is explored in detail. It is shown that for any given holomorphic vector function in $\mathbb{C}^{2s+1}$ written as a Veronese sequence, it is possible to derive subsequent solutions of the $\mathbb{C}P^{2s}$ model through algebraic recurrence relations which turn out to be simpler than the analytic relations known in the literature.

On immersion formulas for soliton surfaces

This paper is devoted to a study of the connections between three different analytic descriptions for the immersion functions of 2D-surfaces corresponding to the following three types of symmetries: gauge symmetries of the linear spectral problem, conformal transformations in the spectral parameter and generalized symmetries of the associated integrable system. After a brief exposition of the theory of soliton surfaces and of the main tool used to study classical and generalized Lie symmetries, we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the immersion formulas associated with these symmetries are linked by gauge transformations. We illustrate the theoretical results by examples involving the sigma model.

Supersymmetric versions of the equations of conformally parametrized surfaces

The objective of this paper is to formulate two distinct supersymmetric (SUSY) extensions of the Gauss-Weingarten and Gauss-Codazzi (GC) equations for conformally parametrized surfaces immersed in a Grassmann superspace, one in terms of a bosonic superfield and the other in terms of a fermionic superfield. We perform this analysis using a superspace-superfield formalism together with a SUSY version of a moving frame on a surface. In constrast with the classical case, where we have three GC equations, we obtain six such equations in the bosonic SUSY case and four such equations in the fermionic SUSY case. In the fermionic case the GC equations resemble the form of the classical GC equations. We determine the Lie symmetry algebra of the classical GC equations to be infinite-dimensional and perform a subalgebra classification of the one-dimensional subalgebras of its largest finite-dimensional subalgebra. We then compute superalgebras of Lie point symmetries of the bosonic and fermionic SUSY GC equations respectively, and classify the one-dimensional subalgebras of each superalgebra into conjugacy classes. We then use the symmetry reduction method to find invariants, orbits and reduced systems for two one-dimensional subalgebras for the classical case, two one-dimensional subalgebras for the bosonic SUSY case and two one-dimensional subalgebras for the fermionic SUSY case. We find explicit solutions of these reduced SUSY systems, which correspond to different surfaces immersed in a Grassmann superspace. Within this framework for the SUSY versions of the GC equations, a geometrical interpretation of the results is discussed.

Solutions of first-order quasilinear systems expressed in Riemann invariants

We present a new technique for constructing solutions of quasilinear systems of first-order partial differential equations, in particular inhomogeneous ones. A generalization of the Riemann invariants method to the case of inhomogeneous hyperbolic and elliptic systems is formulated. The algebraization of these systems enables us to construct certain classes of solutions for which the matrix of derivatives of the unknown functions is expressible in terms of special orthogonal matrices. These solutions can be interpreted as nonlinear superpositions of $k$ waves (or $k$ modes) in the case of hyperbolic (or elliptic) systems, respectively. Theoretical considerations are illustrated by several examples of inhomogeneous hydrodynamic-type equations which allow us to construct solitonlike solutions (bump and kinks) and multiwave (mode) solutions.

Conditional Symmetries and Riemann Invariants for Hyperbolic Systems of PDEs

This paper contains an analysis of rank-k solutions in terms of Riemann invariants, obtained from interrelations between two concepts, that of the symmetry reduction method and of the generalized method of characteristics for first order quasilinear hyperbolic systems of PDEs in many dimensions. A variant of the conditional symmetry method for obtaining this type of solutions is proposed. A Lie module of vector fields, which are symmetries of an overdetermined system defined by the initial system of equations and certain first order differential constraints, is constructed. It is shown that this overdetermined system admits rank-k solutions expressible in terms of Riemann invariants. Finally, examples of applications of the proposed approach to the fluid dynamics equations in (k+1) dimensions are discussed in detail. Several new soliton-like solutions (among them kinks, bumps and multiple wave solutions) have been obtained.
