Electronic Band Structure Effects in the Stopping of Protons in Copper

We present an ab initio study of the electronic stopping power of protons in copper over a wide range of proton velocities $v = 0.02-10~\mathrm{a.u.}$ where we take into account non-linear effects. Time-dependent density functional theory coupled with molecular dynamics is used to study electronic excitations produced by energetic protons. A plane-wave pseudopotential scheme is employed to solve the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations for a moving ion in a periodic crystal. The electronic excitations and the band structure determine the stopping power of the material and alter the interatomic forces for both channeling and off-channeling trajectories. Our off-channeling results are in quantitative agreement with experiments, and at low velocity they unveil a crossover region of superlinear velocity dependence (with a power of $\sim 1.5$) in the velocity range $v = 0.07-0.3~\mathrm{a.u.}$, which we associate to the copper crystalline electronic band structure. The results are rationalized by simple band models connecting two separate regimes. We find that the limit of electronic stopping $v\to 0$ is not as simple as phenomenological models suggest and it plagued by band-structure effects.

Electron-phonon thermalization in a scalable method for real-time quantum dynamics

We present a quantum simulation method that follows the dynamics of out-of-equilibrium many-body systems of electrons and oscillators in real time. Its cost is linear in the number of oscillators and it can probe timescales from attoseconds to hundreds of picoseconds. Contrary to Ehrenfest dynamics, it can thermalize starting from a variety of initial conditions, including electronic population inversion. While an electronic temperature can be defined in terms of a non-equilibrium entropy, a Fermi-Dirac distribution in general emerges only after thermalization. The time evolution of the populations is rationalized in terms of a kinetic model.

A multiphase equation of state for carbon addressing high pressures and temperatures

We present a 5-phase equation of state (EOS) for elemental carbon. The phases considered are: diamond, BC8, simple-cubic, simple-hexagonal, and the liquid/plasma state. The solid phase free energies are constrained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Vibrational contributions to the free energy of each solid phase are treated within the quasiharmonic framework. The liquid free energy model is constrained by fitting to a combination of DFT molecular dynamics performed over the range 10,000 K < T < 100,000 K, and path integral quantum Monte Carlo calculations for T > 100,000 K (both for ρ between 3 and 12 g/cc, with select higher-ρ DFT calculations as well). The liquid free energy model includes an atom-in-jellium approach to account for the effects of ionization due to temperature and pressure in the plasma state, and an ion-thermal model which includes the approach to the ideal gas limit. The precise manner in which the ideal gas limit is reached is greatly constrained by both the highest temperature DFT data and the path integral data, forcing us to discard an ion-thermal model we had used previously in favor of a new one. Predictions are made for the principal Hugoniot and the room-temperature isotherm, and comparisons are made to recent experimental results.

Quantum corral wave function engineering

We present a theoretical method for the design and optimization of quantum corrals with specific electronic properties. Taking advantage that spins are subject to a RKKY interaction that is directly controlled by the scattering of the quantum corral, we design corral structures that reproduce spin Hamiltonians with coupling constants determined a priori. We solve exactly the two-dimensional electron gas scattering problem for each corral configuration within the effective mass approximation and s-wave scattering using a Green function method. Subsequently, the geometry of the quantum corral is optimized with an algorithm that combines simulated annealing and genetic approaches. We demonstrate that it is possible to automatically design quantum corrals with complicated target electronic properties, such as multiple mirages with predefined relative intensities at specific locations. In addition we design structures that are particularly sensitive to the phase shift of impurities at certain positions allowing the measurement of the value of this parameter on the copper surface.
