A method of diagonalization for sfermion mass matrices

We present a method of diagonalization for the sfermion mass matrices of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). It provides analytical expressions for the masses and mixing angles of rather general hermitian sfermion mass matrices, and allows the study of scenarios that extend the usual constrained - MSSM. Three signature cases are presented explicitly and a general study of flavor changing neutral current processes is outlined in the discussion.

Electroweak scale neutrinos and Higgses

We present two different models with electroweak scale right-handed neutrinos. One of the models is created under the constraint that any addition to the Standard Model must not introduce new higher scales. The model contains right-handed neutrinos with electroweak scale masses and a lepton number violating singlet scalar field. The scalar phenomenology is also presented. The second model is a triplet Higgs model where again the right-handed neutrinos have electroweak scale masses. In this case the model has a rich scalar phenomenology and in particular we present the analysis involving the doubly charged Higgs.

Implications of the discovery of a Higgs triplet on electroweak right-handed neutrinos

Electroweak scale active right-handed neutrinos such as those proposed in a recent model necessitate the enlargement of the SM Higgs sector to include Higgs triplets with doubly charged scalars. The search for and constraints on such Higgs sector has implications not only on the nature of the electroweak symmetry breaking but also on the possibility of testing the seesaw mechanism at colliders such as the LHC and the ILC.

Discrete Higgs and the Cosmological Constant

It is proposed that the Higgs vacuum possesses a small-scale structure that can explain the large discrepancy between the predicted electroweak vacuum energy density and the observed cosmological constant. An effective Lagrangian description is employed to obtain modifications to the Standard Model predictions that can be tested at collider experiments.

A Model of Neutrino and Higgs Physics at the Electroweak Scale

We present and explore the Higgs physics of a model that in addition to the Standard Model fields includes a lepton number violating singlet scalar field. Based on the fact that the only experimental data we have so far for physics beyond the Standard Model is that of neutrino physics, we impose a constraint for any addition not to introduce new higher scales. As such, we introduce right-handed neutrinos with an Electroweak Scale mass. We study the Higgs decay $H \to νν$ and show that it leads to different signatures compared to those in the Standard Model, making it possible to detect them and to probe the nature of their couplings.

Neutrino mixing from the double tetrahedral group T^{\prime}

It is shown that it is possible to create successful models of flavor for both quarks and leptons using the discrete non-abelian group $T^{\prime}$ by itself. Two simple realizations are presented that can be used as the starting point for more general scenarios. In addition to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model particle content, the models include three generations of right handed neutrinos and four scalar flavon fields. Three of the flavons are needed in the quark and charged lepton sector of the models and the fourth flavon participates only in the neutrino sector.

Fundamental and composite scalars from extra dimensions

We discuss a scenario consisting of an effective 4D theory containing fundamental and composite fields. The strong dynamics sector responsible for the compositeness is assumed to be of extra dimensional origin. In the 4D effective theory the SM fermion and gauge fields are taken as fundamental fields. The scalar sector of the theory resembles a bosonic topcolor in the sense there are two scalar Higgs fields, a composite scalar field and a fundamental gauge-Higgs unification scalar. A detailed analysis of the scalar spectrum is presented in order to explore the parameter space consistent with experiment. It is found that, under the model assumptions, the acceptable parameter space is quite constrained. As a part of our phenomenological study of the model, we evaluate the branching ratio of the lightest Higgs boson and find that our model predicts a large FCNC mode h -> tc, which can be as large as O(10^{-3}). Similarly, a large BR for the top FCNC decay is obtained, namely B.R.(t -> c + H) \simeq 10^{-4}

Comment to ``Quantization of FRW spacetimes in the presence of a cosmological constant and radiation''

The quantization of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime in the presence of a negative cosmological constant was used in a recent paper to conclude that there are solutions that avoid singularities (big bang--big crunch) at the quantum level. We show that a proper study of their model{\sl does not prevent} the occurrence of singularities at the quantum level, in fact the quantum probability of such event is larger than the classical one. Our numerical simulations based on the powerful variational sinc collocation method (VSCM) also show that the precision of the results of that paper is much lower than the 20 significant digits reported by the authors.

Gauge-Higgs unification with brane kinetic terms

By identifying the Higgs field as an internal component of a higher dimensional gauge field it is possible to solve the little hierarchy problem. The construction of a realistic model that incorporates such a gauge-Higgs unification is an important problem that demands attention. In fact, several attempts in this direction have already been put forward. In this letter we single out one such attempt, a 6D SU(3) extended electroweak theory, where it is possible to obtain a Higgs mass prediction in accord with global fits. One shortcoming of the model is its prediction for the Weinberg angle, it is too large. We slightly modify the model by including brane kinetic terms in a way motivated by the orbifold action on the 6D fields. We show that in this way it is possible to obtain the correct Weinberg angle while keeping the desired results in the Higgs sector.

A new approximation method for time-dependent problems in quantum mechanics

We propose an approximate solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation using the method of stationary states combined with a variational matrix method for finding the energies and eigenstates. We illustrate the effectiveness of the method by applying it to the time development of the wave-function in the quantum-mechanical version of the inflationary slow-roll transition.

A non-perturbative method for time-dependent problems in quantum mechanics

A powerful method for calculating the eigenvalues of a Hamiltonian operator consists of converting the energy eigenvalue equation into a matrix equation by means of an appropriate basis set of functions. The convergence of the method can be greatly improved by means of a variational parameter in the basis functions determined by the principle of minimal sensitivity. In the case of the quartic anharmonic oscillator and of a symmetrical double-well potential we choose an effective oscillator frequency. In the case of nonsymmetrical potential we add a coordinate shift in a two-parameter variational calculation. The method not only gives the spectrum, but also an approximation to the energy eigenfunctions. Consequently it can be used to solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation using the method of stationary states. We apply it to the time development of two different initial wave functions in the double-well slow roll potential.

Flavor Symmetries in Extra Dimensions

We present a class of models of flavor that rely on the use of flavor symmetries and the Froggart-Nielsen mechanism in extra dimensions. The particle content is that of the standard model plus an additional flavon field; all the fields propagate in universal extra dimensions and the flavor scale is associated with the cutoff of the theory, which in 5D is $\sim 10$ TeV. The Yukawa matrices are generated by higher dimension operators involving flavon fields, whose vacuum expectation values break the flavor symmetry. We apply this framework and present a specific 5D model based on a discrete local symmetry that reproduces all fermion masses and mixing angles both in the quark and charged lepton sectors.

Systematic perturbation calculation of integrals with applications to physics

In this paper we generalize and improve a method for calculating the period of a classical oscillator and other integrals of physical interest, which was recently developed by some of the authors. We derive analytical expressions that prove to be more accurate than those commonly found in the literature, and test the convergence of the series produced by the approach.

Comparative study of quantum anharmonic potentials

We perform a study of various anharmonic potentials using a recently developed method. We calculate both the wave functions and the energy eigenvalues for the ground and first excited states of the quartic, sextic and octic potentials with high precision, comparing the results with other techniques available in the literature.

A new method for the solution of the Schrodinger equation

We present a new method for the solution of the Schrodinger equation applicable to problems of non-perturbative nature. The method works by identifying three different scales in the problem, which then are treated independently: An asymptotic scale, which depends uniquely on the form of the potential at large distances; an intermediate scale, still characterized by an exponential decay of the wave function and, finally, a short distance scale, in which the wave function is sizable. The key feature of our method is the introduction of an arbitrary parameter in the last two scales, which is then used to optimize a perturbative expansion in a suitable parameter. We apply the method to the quantum anharmonic oscillator and find excellent results.

Improved Lindstedt-Poincare method for the solution of nonlinear problems

We apply the Linear Delta Expansion (LDE) to the Lindstedt-Poincare (``distorted time'') method to find improved approximate solutions to nonlinear problems. We find that our method works very well for a wide range of parameters in the case of the anharmonic oscillator (Duffing equation) and of the non-linear pendulum. The approximate solutions found with this method are better behaved and converge more rapidly to the exact ones than in the simple Lindstedt-Poincaré method.

Presenting a new method for the solution of nonlinear problems

We present a method for the resolution of (oscillatory) nonlinear problems. It is based on the application of the Linear Delta Expansion to the Lindstedt-Poincaré method. By applying it to the Duffing equation, we show that our method substantially improves the approximation given by the simple Lindstedt-Poincaré method.

Models of Flavor with Discrete Symmetries

In an attempt to understand the observed patterns of lepton and quark masses, models invoking a flavor symmetry $G_f$, under which the Standard Model generations are charged, have been proposed. One particularly successful symmetry, U(2), has been extensively discussed in the literature. The Yukawa matrices in models based on this symmetry reproduce the observed mass ratios in the lepton and quark sectors. The features of the symmetry that determine the texture of the Yukawa matrices can be found in other symmetries as well. We present a model based on a minimal, non-Abelian discrete symmetry that reproduces the Yukawa matrices associated with U(2) theories of flavor. In addition to reproducing the mass and mixing angle relations obtained in such theories, the different representation structure of our new horizontal symmetry allows for solutions to the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems.
