Non-perturbative field theoretical aspects of graphene and related systems

In this article, we review the dynamics of charge carriers in graphene and related 2D systems from a quantum field theoretical point of view. By allowing the electromagnetic fields to propagate throughout space and constraining fermions to move on a 2D manifold, the effective theory of such systems becomes a non-local version of quantum electrodynamics (QED) dubbed in literature pseudo or reduced QED. We review some aspects of the theory assuming the coupling arbitrary in strength. In particular, we focus on the chiral symmetry breaking scenarios and the analytical structure of the fermion propagator in vacuum and under the influence of external agents like a heat bath, in the presence of a Chern-Simons term, anisotropy and in curved space. We briefly discuss the major advances and some new results on this field.

Ritus functions for graphene-like systems with magnetic fields generated by first-order intertwining operators

In this work, we construct the exact propagator for Dirac fermions in graphene-like systems immersed in external static magnetic fields with non-trivial spatial dependence. Such field profiles are generated within a first-order supersymmetric framework departing from much simpler (seed) magnetic field examples. The propagator is spanned on the basis of the Ritus eigenfunctions, corresponding to the Dirac fermion asymptotic states in the non-trivial magnetic field background which nevertheless admits a simple diagonal form in momentum space. This strategy enlarges the number of magnetic field profiles in which the fermion propagator can be expressed in a closed-form. Electric charge and current densities are found directly from the corresponding propagator and compared against similar findings derived from other methods.

Collision energy dependence of the critical end point from baryon number fluctuations in the Linear Sigma Model with quarks

We show that the Linear Sigma Model with quarks produces an effective description of the QCD phase diagram and of the system's equilibrium distribution properties that deviate from those of the Hadron Resonance Gas Model. The deviation is due to the inclusion of plasma screening properties, encoded in the contribution of the ring diagrams and thus to the introduction of a key feature of plasmas near phase transitions, namely, long-range correlations. After fixing the model parameters using input from LQCD for the crossover transition at vanishing chemical potential, we study the location of the Critical End Point in the effective QCD phase diagram. We use the model to study baryon number fluctuations and show that in heavy-ion collisions, the CEP can be located for collision energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}}\sim 2$ GeV, namely, in the lowest NICA or within the HADES energy domain.

Freezable bound states in the continuum for time-dependent quantum potentials

In this work, we construct time-dependent potentials for the Schrödinger equation via supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The generated potentials have a quantum state with the property that after a particular threshold time $t_F$, when the potential does no longer change, the evolving state becomes a bound state in the continuum, its probability distribution freezes. After the factorization of a geometric phase, the state satisfies a stationary Schrödinger equation with time-independent potential. The procedure can be extended to support more than one bound state in the continuum. Closed expressions for the potential, the bound states in the continuum, and scattering states are given for the examples starting from the free particle.

On the influence of a Chern-Simons term in the dynamical fermion masses in Reduced or Pseudo QED

Mixed dimensional theories have been used to describe condensed matter systems where fermions are constrained to a plane while the gauge fields they interact with remain four-dimensional. Here we investigate dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry in the framework of a mixed-dimensional theory that has been successful in describing graphene and other planar Dirac materials and has been dubbed as Pseudo or Reduced Quantum Electrodynamics. We explore the interplay between the gauge and fermion sector when a Chern-Simons term is considered and, by exploring the tensor structure of the fermion self energy, we show that the radiative corrections may induce both, a Dirac and a Haldane mass term. Furthermore, by solving the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson equation in a suitable truncation, we explore non-perturbatively the dynamical generation of fermion masses for different values of the electromagnetic coupling and the Chern-Simons coefficient. We also show that for definite parameter values, the contributions from each chirality cancel out and the chiral symmetry may be restored. Possible implications of this result for physical systems, in particular on what concerns the chiral magnetic effect, are discussed.

Chiral symmetry restoration in RQED at finite temperature in the supercritical coupling regime

We explore the conditions for chiral symmetry breaking in reduced (or pseudo) quantum electrodynamics at finite temperature in connection with graphene and other 2D-materials with an underlying Dirac behavior of the charge carriers. By solving the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson equation in rainbow approximation, in a Landau-like gauge and neglecting wavefunction renormalization effects, we find the need of the coupling to exceed a critical value $α_c$ in order for chiral symmetry to be broken, in agreement with known results from other groups. In this supercritical regime, we add the effects of a thermal bath at temperature $T$ and find the critical values of this parameter that leads to chiral symmetry restoration.

Coherent states in magnetized anisotropic 2D Dirac materials

In this work, we construct coherent states for electrons in anisotropic 2D Dirac materials immersed in a uniform magnetic field perpendicularly oriented to the sample. In order to describe the bidimensional effects on electron dynamics in a semiclassical approach, we adopt the symmetric gauge vector potential to describe the external magnetic field through a vector potential. By solving a Dirac-like equation with an anisotropic Fermi velocity, we identify two sets of scalar ladder operators that allow us to define generalized annihilation operators, which are generators of either the Heisenberg-Weyl or su(1,1) algebra. We construct both bidimensional and su(1,1) coherent states as eigenstates of such annihilation operators with complex eigenvalues. In order to illustrate the effects of the anisotropy on these states, we obtain their probability density and mean energy value. Depending upon the anisotropy, expressed by the ration between the Fermi velocities along the $x$- and $y$-axes, the shape of the probability density is modified on the $xy$-plane with respect to the isotropic case and according to the classical dynamics.

On the propagation of Dirac fermions in graphene with the strain-induced inhomogeneous Fermi velocity

We consider systems described by the two-dimensional Dirac equation where the Fermi velocity is inhomogeneous as a consequence of mechanical deformations. We show that the mechanical deformations can lead to deflection and focusing of the wave packets. The analogy with known reflectionless quantum systems is pointed out. Furthermore, with the use of the qualitative spectral analysis, we discuss how inhomogeneous strains can be used to create waveguides for valley polarized transport of partially dispersionless wave packets.

An innovative approach for sketching the QCD phase diagram within the NJL model using Lagrange Multipliers

We develop a new approach for sketching the quantum chromodynamics phase-diagram within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model for arbitrarily large values of the coupling constant, temperature and chemical potential based upon the strategy of Lagrange multipliers that constrains the corresponding gap equation and its mass gradient. Our approach distinguishes continuous from discountinuous phase transitions and thus is capable of locating the position of the Critical End Point from the thermodynamical parameters of the model alone, without direct reference to the chiral susceptibility or any other observable. The approach can be straightforwardly extended to those effective chiral quark models with a momentum independent constituent quark mass.

Barut-Girardello coherent states for anisotropic 2D-Dirac materials

We construct the Barut-Girardello coherent states for charge carriers in anisotropic 2D-Dirac materials immersed in a constant homogeneous magnetic field which is orthogonal to the sample surface. For that purpose, we solve the anisotropic Dirac equation and identify the appropriate arising and lowering operators. Working in a Landau-like gauge, we explicitly construct nonlinear coherent states as eigenstates of a generalized annihilation operator with complex eigenvalues which depends on an arbitrary function $f$ of the number operator. In order to describe the anisotropy effects on these states, we obtain the Heisenberg uncertainty relation, the probability density, mean energy value and occupation number distribution for three different functions $f$. For the case in which the anisotropy is caused by uniaxial strain, we obtain that when a stress is applied along the $x$-axis of the material surface, the probability density for the nonlinear coherent states is smaller compared to when the material is stressed along the orthogonal axis.

Solving the Gap Equation of the NJL Model through Iteration: Unexpected Chaos

We explore the behavior of the iterative procedure to obtain the solution to the gap equation of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NLJ) model for arbitrarily large values of the coupling constant and in the presence of a magnetic field and a thermal bath. We find that the iterative procedure shows a different behavior depending on the regularization scheme used. It is stable and very accurate when a hard cut-off is employed. Nevertheless, for the Paul-Villars and proper time regularization schemes, there exists a value of the coupling constant (different in each case) from where the procedure becomes chaotic and does not converge any longer.

Pions near condensation under compact star conditions

The behavior of pions is studied in systems where their normal leptonic decay is forbidden. When thermal fluctuations are present, a low decay rate is generated, and as a consequence of lepton recombination, the amount of pions remains almost unaltered. Compact stars conditions are favorable for the formation of such intermediate state of charged pions: near condensation and almost stable, leading to a continuum source of anti-neutrinos. In particular, protoneutron stars could be an scenario where this state of matter is relevant.

Aspects of the pseudo Chiral Magnetic Effect in 2D Weyl-Dirac Matter

A connection is established between the continuum limit of the low-energy tight-binding description of graphene immersed in an in-plane magnetic field and the Chiral Magnetic Effect in Quantum Chromodynamics. A combination of mass gaps that explicitly breaks the equivalence of the Dirac cones, favoring an imbalance of pseudo-chiralities, is the essential ingredient to generate a non-dissipative electric current along the external field. Currents, number densities and condensates generated from this setup are investigated for different hierarchies of the energy scales involved.

Super-Strong Coupling NJL model in arbitrary space-time dimensions

We study chiral symmetry breaking in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model regularized in proper-time in arbitrary space-time dimensions through an iterative procedure by writing the gap equation in the form of a discrete dynamical system with the coupling constant as the control parameter. Expectedly, we obtain the critical coupling for chiral symmetry breaking when a nontrivial solution bifurcates away from the trivial one and becomes an attractor. By increasing further the value of the coupling constant, we observe a second bifurcation where the dynamical solution is no longer an attractor, and observation that holds true in all space-time dimensions. In the super-strong coupling regime, the system becomes chaotic.

Supersymmetric quantum electronic states in graphene under uniaxial strain

We study uniaxially strained graphene under the influence of non-uniform magnetic fields perpendicular to the material sample with a coordinate independent strain tensor. For that purpose, we solve the Dirac equation with anisotropic Fermi velocity and explore the conditions upon which such an equation possesses a supersymmetric structure in the quantum mechanical sense through examples. Working in a Laudau-like gauge, wave functions and energy eigenvalues are found analytically in terms of the magnetic field intensity, the anisotropy scales and other relevant parameters that shape the magnetic field profiles.

Critical chiral hypersurface of the magnetized NJL model

In pursuit of the sketching the effective magnetized QCD phase diagram, we found conditions on the critical coupling for chiral symmetry breaking in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a nontrivial thermo-magnetic environment. Critical values for the plasma parameters, namely, temperature and magnetic field strength for this to happen are hence found in the mean field limit. The magnetized phase diagram is drawn from the criticality condition for different models of the effective coupling describing the inverse magnetic catalysis effect.

Induced Bremsstrahlung by light in graphene

We study the generation of an electromagnetic current in monolayer graphene immersed in a weak perpendicular magnetic field and radiated with linearly polarized monochromatic light. Such a current emits Bremsstrahlung radiation with the same amplitude above and below the plane of the sample, in the latter case consistent with the small amount of light absorption in the material. This mechanism could be an important contribution for the reflexion of light phenomenon in graphene.

Optical Transparency in an effective model for Graphene

Motivated by experiments confirming that the optical transparency of graphene is defined through the fine structure constant and that it could be fully explained within the relativistic Dirac fermions in 2D picture, in this article we investigate how this property is affected by next-to-nearest neighbor coupling in the low-energy continuum description of graphene. A detailed calculation within the linear response regime allows us to conclude that, somewhat surprisingly, the zero-frequency limit of the optical conductivity that determines the transparency remains robust up to this correction.
