Orbital Errors in LEO Satellite Positioning: Modeling, Analysis, and Bayesian Calibration

Low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites offer a promising alternative to global navigation satellite systems for precise positioning. However, their relatively low altitudes make them more susceptible to orbital perturbations, which in turn degrade positioning accuracy. In this work, we study (i) the mechanisms through which orbital errors affect positioning performance and (ii) the fundamental calibration strategies for mitigating low-Earth orbital errors. We first model the satellite orbit and analyze historical two-line element data to characterize the statistical behavior of low-Earth orbital errors. Based on these real-data statistics, we derive the misspecified Cramér-Rao bound to quantify the impact of orbital errors on positioning performance. Subsequently, we develop a Bayesian orbit calibration framework that leverages the learned orbital error statistics as prior information to enhance calibration accuracy. This work sheds light on orbital error modeling, real-data-based evaluation, theoretical impact analysis, and calibration methodologies. Extensive simulations show that stale orbital information can severely degrade positioning performance, whereas learning and incorporating orbital error statistics can effectively enhance orbit calibration and ultimately improve positioning accuracy.

Parametric Channel Estimation and Design for Active-RIS-Assisted Communications

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) technology has emerged as a key enabler for future wireless communications. However, its potential is constrained by the difficulty of acquiring accurate user-to-RIS channel state information (CSI), due to the cascaded channel structure and the high pilot overhead of non-parametric methods. Unlike a passive RIS, where the reflected signal suffers from multiplicative path loss, an active RIS amplifies the signal, improving its practicality in real deployments. In this letter, we propose a parametric channel estimation method tailored for active RISs. The proposed approach integrates an active RIS model with an adaptive Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) to recover the main channel parameters using a minimal number of pilots. To further enhance performance, an adaptive active RIS configuration strategy is employed, which refines the beam direction based on an initial user location estimate. Moreover, an orthogonal angle-pair codebook is used instead of the conventional Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) codebook, significantly reducing the codebook size and ensuring reliable operation for both far-field and near-field users. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed method achieves near-optimal performance with very few pilots compared to non-parametric approaches. Its performance is also benchmarked against that of a traditional passive RIS under the same total power budget to ensure fairness. Results show that active RIS yields higher spectral efficiency (SE) by eliminating the multiplicative fading inherent in passive RISs and allocating more resources to data transmission

Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces for Near-Field Multi-User Covert Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces have emerged as a cutting-edge technology for next-generation wireless communications that are capable of reconfiguring the wireless environment using a large number of cost-effective reflecting elements. However, a significant body of prior studies has focused on single-layer surfaces that lack the capability of significantly mitigating inter-user interference. Moreover, previous studies mostly consider far-field operation and neglect working in the near-field region. In this paper, we propose a stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIM)-assisted near-field multi-user multiple-input-single-output covert communication system. More specifically, we have a multi-antenna base station that is assisted with a SIM to serve multiple single-antenna users in the presence of multiple single-antenna wardens. We aim at optimizing the beamfocusing vectors at the BS and SIM phase shift matrices to maximize the sum covert rate under maximum transmit power budget constraint, quality-of-service (QoS) constraint for all users, and covertness constraint. Since the formulated problem is highly non-convex due to the coupling between the variables, we adopt alternating optimization to tackle it, where we divide the problem into beamfocusing sub-problem and SIM phase shift sub-problem, which are solved alternately until convergence. We leverage successive convex approximation (SCA) to solve the two sub-problems. Additionally, we formulate the SIM phase shift sub-problem using the widely adopted projected gradient ascent (PGA) method for comparison purposes. The conducted simulations reveal that the SCA-based algorithm outperforms the existing PGA-based algorithm as well as other benchmarks in terms of the achieved sum covert rate, demonstrating its consistent performance and robustness under various system parameter configurations.

STAR-RIS-Aided Secure Communications:Analytical Insights and Performance Comparison

Simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RISs) have emerged as a promising technology for enabling full-space signal manipulation and enhancing wireless network coverage and capacity. In this article, we present a comprehensive analytical comparison of STAR-RIS-assisted systems with single-input single-output (SISO), conventional RISs, and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying schemes, including both half-duplex (HD) and full-duplex (FD) modes. Closed-form expressions are derived for the achievable secrecy rates of STAR-RIS-aided communications under both the absence and presence of eavesdroppers. Unlike most existing works, the direct source destination link is incorporated in all considered schemes, and optimal transmit power allocation is investigated for HD and FD-DF relaying. Furthermore, we provide the conditions under which STAR-RIS outperforms HD- and FD-DF relaying and quantify the minimum number of STAR-RIS elements required to achieve superior rates. The impacts of key system parameters including transmit power, number of elements, reflection-to-transmission power ratio, element-splitting factor, and deployment positions on both achievable and secrecy performance are investigated. The results reveal that STAR-RIS systems can achieve superior rates and secrecy rates compared to all benchmark schemes.

Full-Duplex MIMO-OFDM Communication with Self-Energy Recycling

This paper focuses on energy recycling in full-duplex (FD) relaying multiple-input-multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication. The loop self-interference (SI) due to full-duplexing is seen as an opportunity for the energy-constrained relay node to replenish its energy requirement through wireless power transfer. In forwarding the source information to the destination, the FD relay can simultaneously harvest energy from the source wireless transmission and also through energy recycling from its own transmission. The objective is to maximize the overall spectral efficiency by designing the optimal power allocation over OFDM sub-carriers and transmit antennas. Due to a large number of sub-carriers, this design problem poses a large-scale nonconvex optimization problem involving a few thousand variables of power allocation, which is very computationally challenging. A new path-following algorithm is proposed, which converges to an optimal solution. This algorithm is very efficient since it is based on \textit{closed-form} calculations. Numerical results for a practical simulation setting show promising results by achieving high spectral efficiency.

UAV-Enabled Communication Using NOMA

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be deployed as flying base stations (BSs) to leverage the strength of line-of-sight connections and effectively support the coverage and throughput of wireless communication. This paper considers a multiuser communication system, in which a single-antenna UAV-BS serves a large number of ground users by employing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The max-min rate optimization problem is formulated under total power, total bandwidth, UAV altitude, and antenna beamwdith constraints. The objective of max-min rate optimization is non-convex in all optimization variables, i.e. UAV altitude, transmit antenna beamwidth, power allocation and bandwidth allocation for multiple users. A path-following algorithm is proposed to solve the formulated problem. Next, orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and dirty paper coding (DPC)-based max-min rate optimization problems are formulated and respective path-following algorithms are developed to solve them. Numerical results show that NOMA outperforms OMA and achieves rates similar to those attained by DPC. In addition, a clear rate gain is observed by jointly optimizing all the parameters rather than optimizing a subset of parameters, which confirms the desirability of their joint optimization.

Secure and Energy-Efficient Beamforming for Simultaneous Information and Energy Transfer

Next-generation communication networks will likely involve the energy-efficient transfer of information and energy over the same wireless channel, for which the physical layer will become more vulnerable to cyber attacks by potential multi-antenna eavesdroppers. To address this issue, this paper considers transmit time-switching (TS) mode, in which energy and information signals are transmitted separately in time by the BS. This protocol is not only easy to implement but also delivers the opportunity of multi-purpose beamforming, in which energy beamformers during wireless power transfer are useful in jamming the eavesdropper. In the presence of imperfect channel estimation and multi-antenna eavesdroppers, the energy and information beamformers and the transmit TS ratio are jointly optimized to maximize the worst-case user secrecy rate subject to UEs' harvested energy thresholds and a BS transmit power budget. New robust path-following algorithms, which involve one simple convex quadratic program at each iteration are proposed for computational solutions of this difficult optimization problem and also the problem of secure energy efficiency maximization. The latter is further complex due to additional optimization variables appearing in the denominator of the secrecy rate function. Numerical results confirm that the performance of the proposed computational solutions is robust against the channel uncertainties.

Superimposed Signaling Inspired Channel Estimation in Full-Duplex Systems

Residual self-interference (SI) cancellation in the digital baseband is an important problem in full-duplex (FD) communication systems. In this paper, we propose a new technique for estimating the SI and communication channels in a FD communication system, which is inspired from superimposed signalling. In our proposed technique, we add a constant real number to each constellation point of a conventional modulation constellation to yield asymmetric shifted modulation constellations with respect to the origin. We show mathematically that such constellations can be used for bandwidth efficient channel estimation without ambiguity. We propose an expectation maximization (EM) estimator for use with the asymmetric shifted modulation constellations. We derive a closed-form lower bound for the mean square error (MSE) of the channel estimation error, which allows us to find the minimum shift energy needed for accurate channel estimation in a given FD communication system. The simulation results show that the proposed technique outperforms the data-aided channel estimation method, under the condition that the pilots use the same extra energy as the shift, both in terms of MSE of channel estimation error and bit error rate. The proposed technique is also robust to an increasing power of the SI signal.

A Multiband OFDMA Heterogeneous Network for Millimeter Wave 5G Wireless Applications

Emerging fifth generation (5G) wireless networks require massive bandwidth in higher frequency bands, extreme network densities, and flexibility of supporting multiple wireless technologies in order to provide higher data rates and seamless coverage. It is expected that utilization of the large bandwidth in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band and deployment of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) will help address the data rate requirements of 5G networks. However, high pathloss and shadowing in the mmWave frequency band, strong interference in the HetNets due to massive network densification, and coor- dination of various air interfaces are challenges that must be addressed. In this paper, we consider a relay-based multiband orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) HetNet in which mmWave small cells are deployed within the service area of macro cells. Specifically, we attempt to exploit the distinct propagation characteristics of mmWave bands (i.e., 60 GHz- the V-band - and 70-80 GHz -the E-band-) and the Long Term Evolution (LTE) band to maximize overall data rate of the network via efficient resource allocation. The problem is solved using a modified dual decomposition approach and then a low complexity greedy solution based on iterative activity selection algorithm is presented. Simulation results show that the proposed approach outperforms conventional schemes.

Path-Following Algorithms for Beamforming and Signal Splitting in RF Energy Harvesting Networks

We consider the joint design of transmit beamforming and receive signal-splitting ratios in the downlink of a wireless network with simultaneous radio-frequency (RF) information and energy transfer. Under constraints on the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at each user and the total transmit power at the base station, the design objective is to maximize either the sum harvested energy or the minimum harvested energy. We develop a computationally efficient path-following method to solve these challenging nonconvex optimization problems. We mathematically show that the proposed algorithms iteratively progress and converge to locally optimal solutions. Simulation results further show that these locally optimal solutions are the same as the globally optimal solutions for the considered practical network settings.

Mode Selection, Resource Allocation and Power Control for D2D-Enabled Two-Tier Cellular Network

This paper proposes a centralized decision making framework at the macro base station (MBS) for device to device (D2D) communication underlaying a two-tier cellular network. We consider a D2D pair in the presence of an MBS and a femto access point, each serving a user, with quality of service constraints for all users. Our proposed solution encompasses mode selection (choosing between cellular or reuse or dedicated mode), resource allocation (in cellular and dedicated mode) and power control (in reuse mode) within a single framework. The framework prioritizes D2D dedicated mode if the D2D pair are close to each other and orthogonal resources are available. Otherwise, it allows D2D reuse mode if the D2D satisfies both the maximum distance and an additional interference criteria. For reuse mode, we present a geometric vertex search approach to solve the power allocation problem. We analytically prove the validity of this approach and show that it achieves near optimal performance. For cellular and dedicated modes, we show that frequency sharing maximizes sum rate and solve the resource allocation problem in closed form. Our simulations demonstrate the advantages of the proposed framework in terms of the performance gains achieved in D2D mode.

Joint Resource Optimization for Multicell Networks with Wireless Energy Harvesting Relays

This paper first considers a multicell network deployment where the base station (BS) of each cell communicates with its cell-edge user with the assistance of an amplify-and-forward (AF) relay node. Equipped with a power splitter and a wireless energy harvester, the self-sustaining relay scavenges radio frequency (RF) energy from the received signals to process and forward the information. Our aim is to develop a resource allocation scheme that jointly optimizes (i) BS transmit powers, (ii) received power splitting factors for energy harvesting and information processing at the relays, and (iii) relay transmit powers. In the face of strong intercell interference and limited radio resources, we formulate three highly-nonconvex problems with the objectives of sum-rate maximization, max-min throughput fairness and sum-power minimization. To solve such challenging problems, we propose to apply the successive convex approximation (SCA) approach and devise iterative algorithms based on geometric programming and difference-of-convex-functions programming. The proposed algorithms transform the nonconvex problems into a sequence of convex problems, each of which is solved very efficiently by the interior-point method. We prove that our algorithms converge to the locally optimal solutions that satisfy the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions of the original nonconvex problems. We then extend our results to the case of decode-and-forward (DF) relaying with variable timeslot durations. We show that our resource allocation solutions in this case offer better throughput than that of the AF counterpart with equal timeslot durations, albeit at a higher computational complexity. Numerical results confirm that the proposed joint optimization solutions substantially improve the network performance, compared with cases where the radio resource parameters are individually optimized.

Channel, Phase Noise, and Frequency Offset in OFDM Systems: Joint Estimation, Data Detection, and Hybrid Cramer-Rao Lower Bound

Oscillator phase noise (PHN) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) can adversely impact the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, since they can result in inter carrier interference and rotation of the signal constellation. In this paper, we propose an expectation conditional maximization (ECM) based algorithm for joint estimation of channel, PHN, and CFO in OFDM systems. We present the signal model for the estimation problem and derive the hybrid Cramer-Rao lower bound (HCRB) for the joint estimation problem. Next, we propose an iterative receiver based on an extended Kalman filter for joint data detection and PHN tracking. Numerical results show that, compared to existing algorithms, the performance of the proposed ECM-based estimator is closer to the derived HCRB and outperforms the existing estimation algorithms at moderate-to-high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In addition, the combined estimation algorithm and iterative receiver are more computationally efficient than existing algorithms and result in improved average uncoded and coded bit error rate (BER) performance.

Joint Phase Noise Estimation and Data Detection in Coded MIMO Systems

In this paper, the problem of joint oscillator phase noise (PHN) estimation and data detection for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems using bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) is analyzed. A new MIMO receiver that iterates between the estimator and the detector, based on the expectation-maximization (EM) framework, is proposed. It is shown that at high signal-to-noise ratios, a maximum a posteriori estimator (MAP) can be used to carry out the maximization step of the EM algorithm. Moreover, to reduce the computational complexity of the proposed EM algorithm, a soft decision-directed extended Kalman filter-smoother (EKFS) is applied instead of the MAP estimator to track the PHN parameters. Numerical results show that by combining the proposed EKFS based approach with an iterative detector that employs low density parity check (LDPC) codes, PHN can be accurately tracked. Simulations also demonstrate that compared to existing algorithms, the proposed iterative receiver can significantly enhance the performance of MIMO systems in the presence of PHN.
