Properties and Asteroseismological analysis of a new ZZ ceti discovered by TMTS

Tsinghua university-Ma Huateng Telescope for Survey (TMTS) aims to discover rapidly evolving transients by monitoring the northern sky. The TMTS catalog is cross-matched with the white dwarf (WD) catalog of Gaia EDR3, and light curves of more than a thousand WD candidates are obtained so far. Among them, the WD TMTS J23450729+5813146 (hereafter J2345) is one interesting common source. Based on the light curves from the TMTS and follow-up photometric observations, periods of 967.113 s, 973.734 s, 881.525 s, 843.458 s, 806.916 s and 678.273 s are identified. In addition, the TESS observations suggest a 3.39 h period but this can be attributed to the rotation of a comoving M dwarf located within 3". The spectroscopic observation indicates that this WD is DA type with Teff = 11778+/-617K,log g = 8.38+/-0.31,mass=0.84+/-0.20Msun and age=0.704+/-0.377 Gyrs. Asteroseismological analysis reveals a global best-fit solution of Teff =12110+/-10K and mass=0.760+/-0.005Msun,consistent with the spectral fitting results, and Oxygen and Carbon abundances in the core center are 0.73 and 0.27, respectively. The distance derived from the intrinsic luminosity given by asteroseismology is 93 parsec, which is in agreement with the distance of 98 parsec from Gaia DR3. Additionally, kinematic study shows that this WD is likely a thick disk star. The mass of its zero-age main-sequence mass is estimated to be 3.08 Msun and has a main-sequence plus cooling age of roughly 900 Myrs.

A detection of the layered structure of nearby open clusters

We applied the newly developed rose diagram overlay method to detect the layered structure of 88 nearby open clusters ($\leq$500~pc) on the three projections after the distance correction of their member stars, based on the catalog in literature. The results show that with the rose diagram overlay method, a total of 74 clusters in our sample have a layered structure, while the remaining clusters are without a clear layered structure. We for the first time defined the layered structure parameters for the sample clusters. Meanwhile, we found that the layered circle core area ($s$) has a strong positive correlation with the number of cluster members, while the kernel instability index ($η$) has a strong negative correlation with the number of cluster members. Our study provides a novel perspective for the detection of the layered structure of open clusters.

Site-testing at the Muztagh-ata Site.V. Nighttime Cloud Amount during the Last Five Years

The clarity of nights is the major factor that should be carefully considered for optical/infrared astronomical observatories in site-testing campaigns. Cloud coverage is directly related to the amount of time available for scientific observations at observatories. In this article, we report on the results of detailed night-time cloud statistics and continuous observing me derived from ground-based all-sky cameras at the Muztagh-ata site from 2017 to 2021. Results obtained from acquisition data show that the proportion of the annual observing me at the Muztagh-ata site is 65%, and the best period with the least cloud coverage and longer continuous observing time is from September to February. We made a comparison of the monthly mean observing nights obtained from our all-sky cameras and CLARA dataset, results show that the discrepancy between them may depend on the cloud top heights. On average, this site can provide 175 clear nights and 169 nights with at least 4 hours of continuous observing time per year.

Variable stars detection in the field of open cluster NGC 188

This work presents the charge-coupled device (CCD) photometric survey of the old open cluster NGC 188. Time-series V-band photometric observations were conducted for ten nights in January 2017 using the Nanshan One-meter Wide-field Telescope (NOWT) to search for variable stars in the field of the cluster field. A total of 25 variable stars, including one new variable star, were detected in the target field. Among the detected variables, 16 are cluster member stars, and the others are identified as field stars. The periods, radial velocities, effective temperatures, and classifications of the detected variables are discussed in this work. Most of the stars' effective temperatures are between 4200 K and 6600 K, indicating their spectral types are G or K. The newly discovered variable is probably a W UMa system. In this study, a known cluster variable star (V21 = V0769 Cep) is classified as an EA-type variable star based on the presence of an 0.5 magnitude eclipse in its light curve.

An X-Ray-dim "Isolated'' Neutron Star in a Binary?

We report the discovery of a dark companion to 2MASS J15274848+3536572 with an orbital period of 6.14 hr. Combining the radial velocity from LAMOST observations and modelling of the multiband light curve, one obtains a mass function of $\simeq 0.131~\rm M_{\odot}$, an inclination of $45.20^\circ{}^{+0.13^{\circ}}_{-0.20^{\circ}}$, and a mass ratio of $0.631^{+0.014}_{-0.003}$, which demonstrate the binary nature of the dark companion with mass of $0.98 \pm 0.03\rm M_{\odot}$ and a main-sequence K9-M0 star of $0.62 \pm 0.01~\rm M_{\odot}$. LAMOST optical spectra at a range of orbital phases reveal extra-peaked Halpha emission that suggests the presence of an accretion disk. The dark companion does not seem to be a white dwarf because of the lack of any observed dwarf nova outbursts in the long-term data archive, although a magnetic white dwarf cannot be excluded. Alternatively, we propose a scenario wherein the dark companion is a neutron star, but we have not detected radio pulsations or a single pulse from the system with the FAST (Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope), which hints at a radio-quiet compact object. If the dark companion is identified as a neutron star, it will be the nearest ( ~ 118 pc) and lightest neutron star. Furthermore, a kinematic analysis of the system's orbit in the galaxy may suggest its supernova event is associated with the radionuclide $^{60} \rm Fe$ signal observed from the deep-sea crusts. This radio-quiet and X-ray-dim nearby neutron star may resemble an XDINS (X-ray-dim isolated neutron star), but in a binary.

An 18.9-minute Blue Large-Amplitude Pulsator Crossing the 'Hertzsprung Gap' of Hot Subdwarfs

Blue large-amplitude pulsators (BLAPs) represent a new and rare class of hot pulsating stars with unusually large amplitudes and short periods. Up to now, only 24 confirmed BLAPs have been identified from more than one billion monitored stars, including a group with pulsation period longer than $\sim 20$ min (classical BLAPs, hereafter) and the other group with pulsation period below $\sim 8$ min. The evolutionary path that could give rise to such kinds of stellar configurations is unclear. Here we report on a comprehensive study of the peculiar BLAP discovered by the Tsinghua University - Ma Huateng Telescopes for Survey (TMTS), TMTS J035143.63+584504.2 (TMTS-BLAP-1). This new BLAP has an 18.9 min pulsation period and is similar to the BLAPs with a low surface gravity and an extended helium-enriched envelope, suggesting that it is a low-gravity BLAP at the shortest-period end. In particular, the long-term monitoring data reveal that this pulsating star has an unusually large rate of period change, P_dot/P=2.2e-6/yr. Such a significant and positive value challenges its origins from both helium-core pre-white-dwarfs and core helium-burning subdwarfs, but is consistent with that derived from shell helium-burning subdwarfs. The particular pulsation period and unusual rate of period change indicate that TMTS-BLAP-1 is at a short-lived (~10^6 yr) phase of shell-helium ignition before the stable shell-helium burning; in other words, TMTS-BLAP-1 is going through a "Hertzsprung gap" of hot subdwarfs.

Binary open clusters in the Gaia data

Context. Observations indicate that the fraction of potential binary star clusters in the Milky Way is either the same or lower than that of the Magellanic Clouds. The unprecedented precision in the parallax measurements by Gaia has allowed for the discovery of a growing number of new binary open clusters (OCs). Aims. We aim to survey the candidates of truly binary open clusters that are formed simultaneously, using information from the Gaia database. Methods. Based on the most recent catalog of open clusters, we investigated the interactions of adjacent binary open clusters in our Galaxy within separations of 50 pc. We compared their coordinates, proper motions, parallaxes, and color-magnitude diagrams(CMDs) via binary plots for all candidate pairs. The candidates of truly binary open clusters are selected on the basis of their common proper motions and consistent behaviors in the CMDs of different clusters that are limited to a separation of 50 pc. Results. About ten pairs of the selected binary open clusters appear to be the same clusters, based on evidence that almost half ofthe cluster members are shared. Fourteen pairs are possibly true binaries, implying that they may come from the same clouds, among which five pairs are newly discovered. In addition, two clusters, UBC 46 and UBC 192, were found to be part of the stellar complex LISCA I. Our results confirm that OCs born in groups are usually composed of young open clusters.

KIC 10417986: Spectroscopic confirmation of the nature of the binary system with a δ Scuti component

KIC 10417986 is a short orbital period (0.0737 d) ellipsoidal variable star with a δ Scuti and γ Doradus hybrid pulsations component discovered by Kepler. The ground-based spectroscopic observations were carried out in the winters of 2020 and 2021 to investigate the binary nature of this star. We derive the orbital parameters using the rvfit code with a result of K1 = 29.7 $\pm$ 1.5 km/s, γ = -18.7 $\pm$ 1.7 km/s, and confirm an orbital period of 0.84495 d instead of the result given by Kepler. The atmospheric parameters of the primary are determined by the synthetic spectra fitting technique with the estimated values of Teff = 7411 $\pm$ 187 K, log g = 4.2 $\pm$ 0.3 dex, [M/H] = 0.08 $\pm$ 0.09 dex and vsini = 52 $\pm$ 11 km/s. KIC 10417986 is a circular orbit binary system. From the single-lined nature and mass function of the star, the derived orbital inclination is 26 $\pm$ 6°, and the mass of the secondary is from 0.43 to 0.7 M_sun, which should be a late-K to early-M type star. Fourteen frequencies are extracted from Kepler light curves, of which six independent frequencies in the high-frequency region are identified as the p-mode pulsations of δ Scuti star, and one independent frequency in the low-frequency region (f2 = 1.3033 c/d) is probably the rotational frequency due to the starspots rather than the ellipsoidal effect or g-mode of γ Doradus.

A Low-speed Intruder Star in Hyades: A Temporary Residence

We hereby report a low-speed (about~21~km$\cdot$~s$^{-1}$ with respect to the Sun) intruder member in the Hyades cluster based on the data in the literature. The results show that the star is a non-native member star for the Hyades, with its radial velocity being smaller than the radial velocity of the Hyades cluster, even exceeding the standard deviation of the radial velocity of the cluster by a factor of 9. Furthermore, by analyzing and comparing the orbits of this star and its host, it may have intruded into its host in the past 2~Myr. If the star's current motion orbit remains unchanged, it may leave its host in the next 2~Myr. This implies that the intruder star may be temporarily residing in the cluster. This study presents the first observational evidence of a star intrusion into a cluster, which suggests that more evidence may be found.

X-ray emission of contact binary variables within 1 kpc

By assembling the largest sample to date of X-ray emitting EW-type binaries (EWXs), we carried out correlation analyses for the X-ray luminosity log$L_{\textrm{X}}$, and X-ray activity level log($L_{\textrm{X}}$/$L_{\textrm{bol}}$) versus the orbital period $P$ and effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$. We find strong $P$-log$L_{\textrm{X}}$ and $P$-log($L_{\textrm{X}}$/$L_{\textrm{bol}}$) correlations for EWXs with $P$ < 0.44 days and we provide the linear parametrizations for these relations, on the basis of which the orbital period can be treated as a good predictor for log$L_{\textrm{X}}$ and log($L_{\textrm{X}}$/$L_{\textrm{bol}}$). The aforementioned binary stellar parameters are all correlated with log$L_{\textrm{X}}$, while only $T_{\rm eff}$ exhibits a strong correlation with log($L_{\textrm{X}}$/$L_{\textrm{bol}}$). Then, EWXs with higher temperature show lower X-ray activity level, which could indicate the thinning of the convective area related to the magnetic dynamo mechanism. The total X-ray luminosity of an EWX is essentially consistent with that of an X-ray saturated main sequence star with the same mass as its primary, which may imply that the primary star dominates the X-ray emission. The monotonically decreasing $P$-log($L_{\textrm{X}}$/$L_{\textrm{bol}}$) relation and the short orbital periods indicate that EWXs could all be in the X-ray saturated state, and they may inherit the changing trend of the saturated X-ray luminosities along with the mass shown by single stars. For EWXs, the orbital period, mass, and effective temperature increase in concordance. We demonstrate that the period $P=0.44$ days corresponds to the primary mass of $\sim1.1 \rm M_\odot$, beyond which the saturated X-ray luminosity of single stars will not continue to increase with mass. This explains the break in the positive $P$-log$L_{\textrm{X}}$ relation for EWXs with $P>0.44$ days.

Frequency analysis of KIC 1573174 : shedding light on the nature of HADS stars

We propose that KIC 1573174 is a quadruple-mode $δ$ Scuti star with pulsation amplitudes between those of the HADS (high-amplitude Delta Scuti star) group and average low-amplitude pulsators. The radial modes detected in this star provide a unique opportunity to exploit asteroseismic techniques up to their limits. Detailed frequency analysis is given for the light curve from the Kepler mission. The variation of the light curve is dominated by the strongest mode with a frequency of F0 = 7.3975 $\rm{d^{-1}}$, as shown by Fourier analysis of long cadence data (Q1-Q17, spanning 1460 days), indicating that the target is a $δ$ Scuti star. The other three independent modes with F1 = 9.4397 d$^{-1}$, F2 = 12.1225 d$^{-1}$ and F3 = 14.3577 d$^{-1}$, have ratios of $P_{1}$ / $P_{0}$, $P_{2}$ / $P_{0}$ and $P_{3}$ / $P_{0}$ estimated as 0.783, 0.610 and 0.515, which indicate that KIC 1573174 is a quadruple-mode $δ$ Scuti star. A different approach has been used to determine the $O-C$ through the study of phase modulation. The change of period $(1/P)~dP/dt$ is obtained resulting in $-1.14 \times 10^{-6}~\text{yr}^{-1}$ and $-4.48 \times 10^{-6}~\text{yr}^{-1}$ for F0 and F1 respectively. Based on frequency parameters (i.e., F0, F1, F2, and F3), a series of theoretical models were conducted by employing the stellar evolution code MESA. The ratio of observed $f_{1}/f_{2}$ is larger than that of the model, which may be caused by the rotation of the star. We suggest high-resolution spectral observation is highly desired in the future to further constrain models.

Periodic repeating fast radio bursts: interaction between a magnetized neutron star and its planet in an eccentric orbit

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious transient phenomena. The study of repeating FRBs may provide useful information about their nature due to their redetectability. The two most famous repeating sources are FRBs 121102 and 180916, with a period of 157 days and 16.35 days, respectively. Previous studies suggest that the periodicity of FRBs is likely associated with neutron star (NS) binary systems. Here we introduce a new model which proposes that periodic repeating FRBs are due to the interaction of a NS with its planet in a highly elliptical orbit. The periastron of the planet is very close to the NS so that it would be partially disrupted by tidal force every time it passes through the periastron. Fragments generated in the process could interact with the compact star through the Alfvén wing mechanism and produce FRBs. The model can naturally explain the repeatability of FRBs with a period ranging from a few days to several hundred days, but it generally requires that the eccentricity of the planet's orbit should be large enough. Taking FRBs 121102 and 180916 as examples, it is shown that the main features of the observed repeating behaviors can be satisfactorily accounted for.

Decoding the Morphological Evolution of Open Clusters

Base on Gaia Second Data Release and the combination of nonparametric bivariate density estimation with the least square ellipse fitting, we derive the shape parameters of the sample clusters. By analyzing the dislocation of the sample clusters, the dislocation $d$ is related to the X-axis pointing toward the Galactic center, Y-axis pointing in the direction of Galactic rotation, and the Z-axis (log(|H|/pc)) that is positive toward the Galactic north pole. This finding underlines the important role of the dislocation of clusters in tracking the external environment of the Milky Way. The orientation ($q_{pm}$) of the clusters with $e_{pm}$ $\geq$ 0.4 presents an aggregate distribution in the range of -45$\degr$ to 45$\degr$, about 74\% of them. This probably suggests that these clusters tend to deform heavily in the direction of the Galactic plane. NGC 752 is in a slight stage of expansion in the two-dimensional space and will deform itself morphology along the direction perpendicular to the original stretching direction in the future if no other events occur. The relative degree of deformation of the sample clusters in the short-axis direction decreases as their ages increase. On average, the severely distorted sample clusters in each group account for about 26\% $\pm$ 9\%. This possibly implies a uniform external environment in the range of $|$H$|$ $\leq$ 300 pc if the sample completeness of each group is not taken into account.

KIC 12602250: A low-amplitude Double-mode $δ$ Scuti star with Amplitude Modulation

We propose for the first time that KIC 12602250 is a low-amplitude radial double-mode $δ$ Scuti star with amplitude modulation. The detailed frequency analysis is given for the light curve of KIC 12602250 which is delivered from the Kepler mission. The Fourier analysis of the long cadence data (i.e. Q0 - Q17, spanning 1471 days) reveals that the variations of the light curve are dominated by the strongest mode with frequency F0 = 11.6141 $\rm{d^{-1}}$, suggesting that KIC 12602250 is a $δ$ Scuti star. The other independent mode F1 = 14.9741 $\rm{d^{-1}}$ is newly detected. The amplitude of the light variations of \target is $\sim$ 0.06 mag, which indicates that this is a low-amplitude $δ$ Scuti star, but the ratio of F0/F1 is estimated as 0.7756 which is typical of HADS, and a slow amplitude growth is detected in F1 and $f_{3}$, which could be due to stellar evolution, suggesting that KIC 12602250 could be a post main sequence $δ$ Scuti which is crossing the instability strip for the first time.

SN 2017fgc: A Fast-Expanding Type Ia Supernova Exploded in Massive Shell Galaxy NGC 474

We present extensive optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the high-velocity (HV) Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2017fgc, covering the phase from $\sim$ 12 d before to $\sim 389$ d after maximum brightness. SN 2017fgc is similar to normal SNe Ia, with an absolute peak magnitude of $M_{\rm max}^{B} \approx$ $-19.32 \pm 0.13$ mag and a post-peak decline of $Δm_{15}(B)$ = $1.05 \pm 0.07$ mag. Its peak bolometric luminosity is derived as $1.32 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{43} $erg s$^{-1}$, corresponding to a $^{56}$Ni mass of $0.51 \pm 0.03 M_{\odot}$. The light curves of SN 2017fgc are found to exhibit excess emission in the $UBV$ bands in the early nebular phase and pronounced secondary shoulder/maximum features in the $RrIi$ bands. Its spectral evolution is similar to that of HV SNe Ia, with a maximum-light Si II velocity of $15,000 \pm 150 $km s$^{-1}$ and a post-peak velocity gradient of $\sim$ $120 \pm 10 $km s$^{-1} $d$^{-1}$. The Fe II and Mg II lines blended near 4300 Å and the Fe II, Si II, and Fe III lines blended near 4800 Å are obviously stronger than those of normal SNe Ia. Inspecting a large sample reveals that the strength of the two blends in the spectra, and the secondary peak in the $i/r$-band light curves, are found to be positively correlated with the maximum-light Si II velocity. Such correlations indicate that HV SNe~Ia may experience more complete burning in the ejecta and/or that their progenitors have higher metallicity. Examining the birthplace environment of SN 2017fgc suggests that it likely arose from a stellar environment with young and high-metallicity populations.

Deciphering Star Cluster Evolution by Shape Morphology

We analyze the morphological evolution of open clusters and provide shape parameters for 265 open clusters. The results show that the overall shape of sample clusters becomes more elliptical as they grow older, while their core remains circular or slightly trend to circularize. There is a negative correlation of the ellipticities with the number of members of the sample clusters. A significant negative correlation between the overall ellipticities and masses is also detected for the sample clusters with log(age/year) $\geq$ 8, suggesting that the overall shapes of the clusters are possibly influenced by the number of members and masses, in addition to the external forces and the surrounding environment. For most young sample clusters, the radial stratification degree of the short axis direction is greater than that of the long, implying that the radial stratification degree in the two directions within the young sample cluster may be unevenly affected by an internal evolutionary process. Older sample clusters exhibit lower stratification in the tangential direction, which possibly means those clusters may continue to survive for a long time at a low level of stratification. Our analysis shows that the overall shape of the sample clusters may be more susceptible to the influence of Galactic tides toward the Galactic center than the shear forces embedded in Galactic differential rotation. By analyzing the distribution of the ages and number of members of star clusters, we suggest that NGC 6791 may originate from superclusters.

SN 2017hpa: A Nearby Carbon-Rich Type Ia Supernova with a Large Velocity Gradient

We present extensive, well-sampled optical and ultraviolet photometry and optical spectra of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2017hpa. The light curves indicate that SN 2017hpa is a normal SN Ia with an absolute peak magnitude of $M_{\rm max}^{B} \approx$ -19.12$\pm$0.11 mag and a post-peak decline rate \mb\ = 1.02$\pm$0.07 mag. According to the quasibolometric light curve, we derive a peak luminosity of 1.25$\times$10$^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and a $^{56}$Ni mass of 0.63$\pm$0.02 $M_{\odot}$. The spectral evolution of SN 2017hpa is similar to that of normal SNe Ia, while it exhibits unusually rapid velocity evolution resembling that of SN 1991bg-like SNe Ia or the high-velocity subclass of SNe Ia, with a post-peak velocity gradient of $\sim$ 130$\pm$7 km s$^{-1}$ d$^{-1}$. Moreover, its early spectra ($t < -7.9$ d) show prominent \CII~$λ$6580 absorption feature, which disappeared in near-maximum-light spectra but reemerged at phases from $t \sim +8.7$ d to $t \sim +11.7$ d after maximum light. This implies that some unburned carbon may mix deep into the inner layer, and is supported by the low \CII~$λ$6580 to \SiII~$λ$6355 velocity ratio ($\sim 0.81$) observed in SN 2017hpa. The \OI~$λ$7774 line shows a velocity distribution like that of carbon. The prominent carbon feature, low velocity seen in carbon and oxygen, and large velocity gradient make SN 2017hpa stand out from other normal SNe Ia, and are more consistent with predictions from a violent merger of two white dwarfs. Detailed modelling is still needed to reveal the nature of SN 2017hpa.

Photometric and Spectroscopic Study of Flares on Ross 15

We conducted photometric and spectroscopic observations for Ross 15 in order to further study the flare properties of this less observed flare star. A total of 28 B-band flares are detected in 128 hours of photometric observations, leading to a total flare rate of 0.22(+-0.04) hour^-1, more accurate than that provided by previous work. We give the energy range of the B-band flare (10^29.5 - 10^31.5 erg) and the FFD for the star. Within the same energy range, the FFD are lower than that of GJ 1243 (M4) and YZ CMi (M4.5), roughly in the middle of those of three M5-type stars and higher than the average FFDs of spectral types >= M6. We performed, for the first time to Ross 15, simultaneous high-cadence spectroscopic and photometric observations, resulting in detection of the most energetic flare in our sample. The intensity enhancements of the continuum and Balmer lines with significant correlations between them are detected during the flare, which is same with that of the other deeply studied flare stars of the similar spectral type.
