On the stability of the equator map for higher order energy functionals

Let $B^n\subset {\mathbb R}^{n}$ and ${\mathbb S}^n\subset {\mathbb R}^{n+1}$ denote the Euclidean $n$-dimensional unit ball and sphere respectively. The \textit{extrinsic $k$-energy functional} is defined on the Sobolev space $W^{k,2}\left (B^n,{\mathbb S}^n \right )$ as follows: $E_{k}^{{\rm ext}}(u)=\int_{B^n}|\Delta^s u|^2\,dx$ when $k=2s$, and $E_{k}^{{\rm ext}}(u)=\int_{B^n}|\nabla \Delta^s u|^2\,dx$ when $k=2s+1$. These energy functionals are a natural higher order version of the classical extrinsic bienergy, also called Hessian energy. The equator map $u^*: B^n \to {\mathbb S}^n$, defined by $u^*(x)=(x/|x|,0)$, is a critical point of $E_{k}^{{\rm ext}}(u)$ provided that $n \geq 2k+1$. The main aim of this paper is to establish necessary and sufficient conditions on $k$ and $n$ under which $u^*: B^n \to {\mathbb S}^n$ is minimizing or unstable for the extrinsic $k$-energy.

Compactness Properties for Geometric Fourth order Elliptic equations with Application to the Q-curvature Flow

We prove the compactness of solutions to general fourth order elliptic equations which are L^1-perturbations of the Q-curvature equation on compact Riemannian 4-maniods. Consequently, we prove the global existence and convergence of the Q-curvature flow on a generic class of Riemannian 4-manifolds. As a by product, we give a positive answer to an open question by A. Malchiodi on the existence of bounded Palais-Smale sequences for the Q-curvature problem when the Paneitz operator is positive with trivial kernel.

Q-curvature Flow for GJMS Operators with Non-trivial Kernel

We investigate the prescribed Q-curvature flow for GJMS operators with non-trivial kernel on compact manifolds of even dimension. When the total Q-curvature is negative, we identify a conformally invariant condition on the nodal domains of functions in the kernel of the GJMS operator, allowing us to prove the global existence and the convergence of the flow to a metric which is conformal to the initial one, and having a prescribed Q-curvature. If the total Q-curvature is positive, we show that the flow blows up in finite time.

Regularity and Uniqueness of p-harmonic Maps with Small Range

We prove the uniqueness of solutions to Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic maps with images in a small geodesic ball of the target manifold. As a consequence, we show that such maps have Hoelder continuous derivatives. This gives an extension of a result by S. Hildebrandt et al concerning harmonic maps.
