A MacMahon Analysis View of 4 Diagonal DSPPs

We study skew double-shifted plane partitions with three-element profiles using MacMahon's partition analysis. We present new generating function formulas for these partitions, incorporating an extra bound on the number of non-zero diagonal elements. These objects are closely related to the Göllnitz-Gordon and little Göllnitz identities. Moreover, we investigate some infinite hierarchies of $q$-series identities that stem from our formulas. We also observe certain palindromic properties within these generating functions. Finally, we examine these same objects from the perspective of linear partitions, which leads to interesting new $q$-series identities.

A Weighted Words Study of MacMahon's and Russell's Modulo 6 Identities

We give new proofs of MacMahon and Russell's modulo 6 identities using the method of weighted words. We also present a new refinement of MacMahon's identity, some related finite sum identities, and a companion partition theorem to sequence avoiding partitions theorem of the author and Andrews.

A MacMahon Analysis View of Cylindric Partitions

We study cylindric partitions with two-element profiles using MacMahon's partition analysis. We find explicit formulas for the generating functions of the number of cylindric partitions by first finding the recurrences using partition analysis and then solving them. We also note some q-series identities related to these objects that show the manifestly positive nature of some alternating series. We generalize the proven identities and conjecture new polynomial refinements of Andrews-Gordon and Bressoud identities, which are companions to Foda-Quano's refinements. Finally, using a variant of the Bailey lemma, we present many new infinite hierarchies of polynomial identities.

Iterated Resultants and Rational Functions in Real Quantifier Elimination

This paper builds and extends on the authors' previous work related to the algorithmic tool, Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition (CAD), and one of its core applications, Real Quantifier Elimination (QE). These topics are at the heart of symbolic computation and were first implemented in computer algebra systems decades ago, but have recently received renewed interest as part of the ongoing development of SMT solvers for non-linear real arithmetic. First, we consider the use of iterated univariate resultants in traditional CAD, and how this leads to inefficiencies, especially in the case of an input with multiple equational constraints. We reproduce the workshop paper [Davenport and England, 2023], adding important clarifications to our suggestions first made there to make use of multivariate resultants in the projection phase of CAD. We then consider an alternative approach to this problem first documented in [McCallum and Brown, 2009] which redefines the actual object under construction, albeit only in the case of two equational constraints. We correct an unhelpful typo and provide a proof missing from that paper. We finish by revising the topic of how to deal with SMT or Real QE problems expressed using rational functions (as opposed to the usual polynomial ones) noting that these are often found in industrial applications. We revisit a proposal made in [Uncu, Davenport and England, 2023] for doing this in the case of satisfiability, explaining why such an approach does not trivially extend to more complicated quantification structure and giving a suitable alternative.

A Poly-algorithmic Approach to Quantifier Elimination

Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition (CAD) was the first practical means for doing real quantifier elimination (QE), and is still a major method, with many improvements since Collins' original method. Nevertheless, its complexity is inherently doubly exponential in the number of variables. Where applicable, virtual term substitution (VTS) is more effective, turning a QE problem in $n$ variables to one in $n-1$ variables in one application, and so on. Hence there is scope for hybrid methods: doing VTS where possible then using CAD. This paper describes such a poly-algorithmic implementation, based on the second author's Ph.D. thesis. The version of CAD used is based on a new implementation of Lazard's recently-justified method, with some improvements to handle equational constraints.

Lazard-style CAD and Equational Constraints

McCallum-style Cylindrical Algebra Decomposition (CAD) is a major improvement on the original Collins version, and has had many subsequent advances, notably for total or partial equational constraints. But it suffers from a problem with nullification. The recently-justified Lazard-style CAD does not have this problem. However, transporting the equational constraints work to Lazard-style does reintroduce nullification issues. This paper explains the problem, and the solutions to it, based on the second author's Ph.D. thesis and the Brown--McCallum improvement to Lazard. With a single equational constraint, we can gain the same improvements in Lazard-style as in McCallum-style CAD . Moreover, our approach does not fail where McCallum would due to nullification. Unsurprisingly, it does not achieve the same level of improvement as it does in the non-nullified cases. We also consider the case of multiple equational constraints.

A Unified Approach to Unimodality of Gaussian Polynomials

In 2013, Pak and Panova proved the strict unimodality property of $q$-binomial coefficients $\binom{\ell+m}{m}_q$ (as polynomials in $q$) based on the combinatorics of Young tableaux and the semigroup property of Kronecker coefficients. They showed it to be true for all $\ell,m\geq 8$ and a few other cases. We propose a different approach to this problem based on computer algebra, where we establish a closed form for the coefficients of these polynomials and then use cylindrical algebraic decomposition to identify exactly the range of coefficients where strict unimodality holds. This strategy allows us to tackle generalizations of the problem, e.g., to show unimodality with larger gaps or unimodality of related sequences. In particular, we present proofs of two additional cases of a conjecture by Stanley and Zanello.

SMT-Solving Induction Proofs of Inequalities

This paper accompanies a new dataset of non-linear real arithmetic problems for the SMT-LIB benchmark collection. The problems come from an automated proof procedure of Gerhold--Kauers, which is well suited for solution by SMT. The problems of this type have not been tackled by SMT-solvers before. We describe the proof technique and give one new such proof to illustrate it. We then describe the dataset and the results of benchmarking. The benchmarks on the new dataset are quite different to the existing ones. The benchmarking also brings forward some interesting debate on the use/inclusion of rational functions and algebraic numbers in the SMT-LIB.

Sequences in Overpartitions

This paper is devoted to the study of sequences in overpartitions and their relation to 2-color partitions. An extensive study of a general class of double series is required to achieve these ends.

On double sum generating functions in connection with some classical partition theorems

We focus on writing closed forms of generating functions for the number of partitions with gap conditions as double sums starting from a combinatorial construction. Some examples of the sets of partitions with gap conditions to be discussed here are the set of Rogers--Ramanujan, Göllnitz--Gordon, and little Göllnitz partitions. This work also includes finding the finite analogs of the related generating functions and the discussion of some related series and polynomial identities. Additionally, we present a different construction and a double sum representation for the products similar to the ones that appear in the Rogers--Ramanujan identities.

Cylindric partitions and some new $A_2$ Rogers-Ramanujan identities

We study the generating functions for cylindric partitions with profile $(c_1,c_2,c_3)$ for all $c_1,c_2,c_3$ such that $c_1+c_2+c_3=5$. This allows us to discover and prove seven new $A_2$ Rogers-Ramanujan identities modulo $8$ with quadruple sums, related with work of Andrews, Schilling, and Warnaar.

Log-concavity results for a biparametric and an elliptic extension of the $q$-binomial coefficients

We establish discrete and continuous log-concavity results for a biparametric extension of the $q$-numbers and of the $q$-binomial coefficients. By using classical results for the Jacobi theta function we are able to lift some of our log-concavity results to the elliptic setting. One of our main ingredients is a putatively new lemma involving a multiplicative analogue of Turán's inequality.

On a weighted spin of the Lebesgue Identity

Alladi studied partition theoretic implications of a two variable generalization of the Lebesgue identity. In this short note, we focus on a slight variation of the basic hypergeometric sum that Alladi studied. We present two new partition identities involving weights.

qFunctions -- A Mathematica package for $q$-series and partition theory applications

We describe the qFunctions Mathematica package for $q$-series and partition theory applications. This package includes both experimental and symbolic tools. The experimental set of elements includes guessers for $q$-shift equations and recurrences for given $q$-series and fitting/finding explicit expressions for sequences of polynomials. This package can symbolically handle formal manipulations on $q$-differential, $q$-shift equations and recurrences, such as switching between these forms, finding the greatest common divisor of recurrences, and formal substitutions. Here, we also extend the classical method of the weighted words approach. Moreover, qFunctions has implementations that automate the recurrence system creation of the weighted words approach as well as a scheme on cylindric partitions.

Refined $q$-Trinomial Coefficients and Two Infinite Hierarchies of $q$-Series Identities

We will prove an identity involving refined $q$-trinomial coefficients. We then extend this identity to two infinite families of doubly bounded polynomial identities using transformation properties of the refined $q$-trinomials in an iterative fashion in the spirit of Bailey chains. One of these two hierarchies contains an identity which is equivalent to Capparelli's first Partition Theorem.

A Polynomial Identity Implying Schur's Partition Theorem

We propose and prove a new polynomial identity that implies Schur's partition theorem. We give combinatorial interpretations of some of our expressions in the spirit of Kurşungöz. We also present some related polynomial and $q$-series identities.
